Variety of sounds, lyrics that really tell a story, impeccable voice.
An artist who undoubtedly explores her most creative, sincere and deep side ... She leaves her comfort zone and even the safe area in the charts by making her album a mixture of sounds and lyrics that range from the seductive to the soft

A surprisingly intimate and emotionally vulnerable album. Cabello's vocals are unique and expressive and her songwriting is top notch. Great debut record and a very promising start to her solo career.

First let me start by saying that 'Camila' is a record much different than I expected from a girl group runaway, especially when considering the group in question is Fifth Harmony and she was effectively the lead vocalist/figure and not some fringe member. It's worth mentioning that I've got nothing against Camila or her former Fifth Harmony band sisters, but the brand of pop found in their albums is just not my style and beyond a quick listen here or there, there's never been much that resonated with me as particularly interesting or appealing. It's for these reasons that the lead single off this album, "Havana" and the content of the album itself really took me by surprise. Camila Cabello has earned the right to have "Former Fifth Harmony siren" dropped before her name, she is an artist in her own right and here's why.

Before I dive in I want to get some things out of the way, the production here is lean and understated outside of the two singles "Havana" and "Never Be The Same", and this works beautifully for some of the gorgeous ballads [yeah, there are balladS, plural, on a debut album from a popstar in 2018, nuts right?] but causes some of the closing tracks to fall a little flat. Additionally, the speed of the album is pretty even-keeled and I won't lie, while it's a short listen, tracks 6,7,8 can feel long; prepare to either fall into your feelings if like me you live for earnest writing and emotive vocal performances or slip into a soft slumber if you expected high-octane, radio-ready pop bangers--though I do advise you against this, you will miss out on some of the most poignant deep cuts from a young popstar in years.

That said, there's so much about this album that works--the Latin seasoning peppered through She Loves Control to Havana and sprinkled lightly on Inside Out, the charismatic and playful bounce of Camila's vocal delivery, ad libs and delicious cooing and of course, the spectacular writing for which Camila is credited on every single track along with a host of unusual co-writers [Amy Wadge?] outside of some flashy names [Justin Tranter, Ryan Tedder]. This isn't a perfect record by any means I could sit here and list a number of offenses from a technical standpoint [seriously, Camila powers this whole album virtually alone at times, what is with some of the production?] but I won't do that, what I will do is invite you to check out this heartwarming, tender and passionate debut and pay a close ear to the candidness she shares on virtually every song [even the lively Havana has the smoky line "Half of my heart is in Havana" which is an ode to her hometown, couple that with the fact Cuban-American relations aren't the best and she's not readily able to return and it's actually quite a poignant song]. In short, it sounds like Joni Mitchell and acoustic Shakira teamed up to put out an album.

Considering her past with the group I was expecting a first album full of super produced songs and with the goal of reaching the charts. But listening to this I didn't feel this desire that many new artists have to make only hits. '' Camila '' takes a more intimate and gentle approach, very pleasant to hear. I did not expect to like the album at all, even thought that as a solo artist she would flop because in the old days her voice was very hight pitch, an entire album with a hight pitch voice was not going to work for me. The fifth harmony songs worked because they contained four other members and four other different voices. But her voice is super different on this album, so smooth and melodic. I'm really impressed! She really captivated me with this debut. Expand

Living between two cultures can be alienating, but Camila Cabello packages her experience as a Cuban-American seamlessly into pure pop perfection.

“Never Be the Same” proves that Cabello doesn’t need a mammoth voice. The love-is-a-drug lyric she’s singing is dumb, but she sells it so joyfully that you don’t even notice, and its wonderfully breathy, high-register hook ensures “Havana” won’t be her last solo hit.

While Cabello stands out on the more fiery tracks, she also shines in subtlety.
