Dec 2, 2025Cabin In The Sky is a rollercoaster of an album that reveals its depth over repeated listens. Yes, at heart it is a eulogy for fallen loved ones, but it is also an existential crisis wrapped up in phenomenal guest appearances and carefully selected samples.

Dec 1, 2025Even grappling with mortality, De La Soul retain their eternal warmth and optimism on Cabin in the Sky, crafting a fun, jubilant set of tracks as they process deeper shades of reflection, thoughtfulness, and ultimately, acceptance.

Dec 1, 2025It’s good enough that you could even pitch it as the fitting finale for an entire era of rap, one whose greatest voices are now firmly approaching pension age. But the album actually creates the opposite problem: it’s too alive to be an ending, too rich with ideas and sonic pleasures.

Nov 25, 2025There’s no need to know the full context to enjoy ‘Cabin In The Sky’. As one of the most straight-forwardly enjoyable hip-hop albums 2025 has offered us, you’d be hard-pushed to top it for entertainment.

Nov 25, 2025While De La Soul’s social commentary is incisive, at its core this is an album about David Jolicoeur and the space he’s left behind.

Nov 25, 2025De La Soul still know how to create event albums that command our attention. It’s one of their less-acknowledged gifts — there’s only a handful of rap acts who warrant critical fervor with every release — and a primary reason why Cabin in the Sky feels riveting despite a surplus of sentimental pop tones.

Nov 25, 2025It wouldn’t be a De La Soul album without some overconceptual tracks like “A Quick 16 for Mama” and confusing skit narratives. Eventually though, like the game show on 3 Feet High and Rising and the haters on De La Soul Is Dead, these overwrought moments settle into being a lovable quirk of both the record and the trio themselves.

Dec 2, 2025Per usual, the group’s love for mini-narratives can sometimes clutter the music and cause an interesting idea to outstay its welcome. .... But the overall mood is agreeably potluck, a diverse spread of beats and rhymes to nourish the soul.

Nov 25, 2025Lasting more than 70 minutes, Cabin in the Sky can feel like a slog, with the end lacking the sprightliness of the album’s first half. An exception is the title track, on which Maseo and Pos pay tribute to Trugoy and others they’ve lost. It’s pensive and world-weary, but never loses its sense of magic.
