Some songs are so factually dense that they run the risk of alienating listeners, but apart from a few missteps (the sedative, information-crammed title track, for instance), Burnover’s poetic flourishes and dynamic arrangements are so engaging that you can’t help but find yourself caring—or at least rocking out.

Not every great album hits on the first listen, but Freeman’s second record, Burnover, somehow feels like it’s always existed.

It’s one that will thrill fans of inventive, guitar-driven alternative rock.

While his narratives can leave a lot to chew on, Freeman is at his very best when his ragged, guitar-drenched intensity sounds deceivingly loose. He does try to balance the mood more in the exploratory second half, but he's earned that decision after the first half's tight, generous songwriting

The album captivates wen his bad keeps pulling Freeman and his florid drawl back down to earth, the tension creating a form of transportive rural psychedelia. [Sep 2025, p.79]

The new set finds Freeman sharper, more ambitious, and (somehow) oozing even more personality.
