2025's Based on the Best Seller is Sloan's 14th album, and it has everything you could ask for from a pop-leaning rock band – killer tunes, plenty of swagger and spirit, guitar crunch for days, expert harmonies, a first rate rhythm section, and production that captures their many virtues with clean concision and no excess treacle.

The humour enhances the band's vigour: loud and ragged, they sound like a band much younger than their years, although the high quality of songcraft is a giveaway of their veteran status. [Nov 2025, p.93]

Compared to all other Sloan albums, Based on the Based Seller is right in line. Compared with everything else, it’s a 10.

For the most part, Based on the Best Seller feels like a revitalized bunch of friends cutting loose and having a blast. The wheel hasn't been reinvented, but you get all the inside jokes because they're your friends — and you're just happy to have been invited along for the ride.

For Based on the Best Seller, even Scott’s tracks fit in pretty snugly. Catchy melodies and big guitars are the order of the day, with a side of Murph’s jauntier piano-driven songs to change things up.
