This latest outing to feature Pajo’s voice unites a few varied approaches. Two longer, more on-brand instrumentals, People’s Free Food Program and Thank You For Talking to Me (When I Was Fat), place his core talents – anchoring repetition and thematic evolution – front and centre.

Ballads Of Harry Houdini is more like a spiritual sequel to the rockier and cross-genre Highway Songs from 2016. It feels deceptively slimmer with just six songs, rather than nine. In fact, its total running time is ten minutes longer. Maybe more focused, then?

Ballads Of Harry Houdini brandishes a sharper focus than many of its predecessors, with “Barfighter” and “Devil Tongue” bristling with tension and those signature guitar lines that move like wreaths of smoke. [Review of the Year 2024, p.34]

It's a more lighthearted chapter in the ongoing Papa M story, and some of its moments are among the most enjoyable in the project's entire catalog.

Those who like their Dave in lane will prefer the recently released, quintessentially post-rocking Aerial M Peel Session Andrew Perry from 1998. Fans of unpredictable Pajo should feast here. [Jan 2025, p.89]
