A Season in Hull is a cast-off gem, another diamond in a career of low-key marvels.

Another reliably excellent offering. [Mar 2016, p.82]

The Wave Pictures have embraced DIY ethic and shown that less is more and will hopefully inspire more people to make a record this way.

The album sounds like what it is, then: a spur-of-the-moment, vinyl-only release, written and recorded for simplicity and speed. On these terms, it succeeds.

Disarmingly great guitar solos complete a picture of a band who aren’t as appreciated as they deserve to be.

This lo-fi, devil-may-care air translates well to record, with A Season in Hull capturing and accentuating the band’s characteristic camaraderie and casual, Jonathan Richman-esque charm.... Admittedly, the stripped-down setup has drawbacks too, leaving the material with nowhere to hide and exposing an uncharacteristic patchiness.
