There isn't anything particularly new or special to be found here, but it is a fun enough time and even has one or two tracks that actually have some emotion and hopeful sweetness to them. Aside from that, Taylor Swift's beautiful voice works surprisingly well with the pop beats. Anyone who is into fun and not horridly inappropriate pop music should give this one a listen.

Best mainstream album of the year. It proves to show that a pop album can contain depth as well. Once again, Taylor set herself apart from all the other pop stars by creating a juggernaut album that took over the charts ever since its release.

Sonically, '1989' is very different than anything Taylor Swift has ever done, but when you stay faithful to your soul and your core, nothing you do will upset people. Her first 'official documented pop album' is just perfection made by the combination of catchy tunes, deep lyrics (as usual), great vocal performance, and confidence/sass kinda attitude. Here is every single track reviewed:
    1. Welcome to New York: This song, done with Ryan Tedder, serves its purpose with brilliance: Introducing Swift's most-sonically challenging album. Great track and New York Anthem.
    2. Blank Space: The first highlight of the album, produced by hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback, and written by Swift, this song offers everything there is: Love, Fun, Confidence, Dismissing what people say. EVERYTHING I tell ya!
    3. Style.: Another amazing song from amazing Mrs. Swift. I think what really shines on here are the reaaaally good lyrics (You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye/ And I got that red lip classic thing that you like.)
    4. Out of the Woods: The first promo single of the album, produced by Antonoff, sees Swift at her most experimental and adventurous yet. Really good song.
    5. All You Had To Do Was Stay: The verse emerges reminiscent of the Speak Now & Fearless eras (Lyrically speaking) and then the chorus hits and the world is slayed. I think what rings the most is the epic "Stay!"
    6. Shake It Off: Okay, if you still haven't heard this song, you must be living on Mars or something. A great haters-gonna-hate anthem, wisely chosen as the lead single.
    7. I Wish You Would: If you didn't like this track from the first listen, that's okay, I didn't either. But it really grew on me and realized the chorus is the most insane thing Taylor has ever done.
    8. Bad Blood: If it really is about Katy Perry, then I got bad news for her: Katy Perry, you are (unfortunately) very burned. Lyrically strong and great production. I mean, have you heard those beats?
    9. Wildest Dreams: Lana Del Rey, is that you? Taylor attempts a Lana-type-of-song, and she absolutely nails it. My second favourite off the album, after 'Blank Space'. Breathy vocals and production and dark lyrics, way to go!
    10. How You Get The Girl: The only song on '1989' that is not as memorable as the others. It's still good though, with typical Swift-lyrics, such as 'I want you for worse or for better/ I would wait forever and ever'.
    11. This Love: Written by Swift alone, this song is so much reminiscent of the Speak Now era, except it's pop. Breathy, dark and calm, this song is absolutely beautiful!
    12. I Know Places: The darkest song on the record. The lyrics hit too much, and the melodies will just sweep you off. Great attempt at change, Tay (especially with the 'They are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run' line)!
    13. Clean: You like 'All Too Well'? Well this song is the closest to it on the record. Emotionally charged, this song serves as the perfect closer.

Remember when Lorde said that Taylor is a "perfectionist"? Well, she wasn't wrong, folks! Great album Taylor. (Hoping you'd go country again for your 2016 release). This album proves that Mrs. Swift still has a long career ahead of her. 10/10.

This album is exceptionally different from most pop album today. Comparing to her peers today (not to mention like Miley, Ariana, Katy, etc), her song lyrics are somewhat pretty obvious in here. It's not generic as what most pop hits today rather it's personal, affective and emotional. Shes way better from other pop stars.

This new album of Taylor Swift is a big step outside country music which is very well handled. Songs like Blank Spaces, How you get the girl, I know Places are the AWESOMEST. Even the NYC anthem is the one to look out for.

This is one of those albums in which I love every single song on it which is quite rare with me. The last time I had an album with the same effect was with Ariana Grande's debut album 'Yours Truly' back in 2013 so its very nice to have an album that I can listen to without skipping any songs.
One major thing that appealed to me was how diverse her voice could be, especially in songs such as 'Welcome To New York' where she sounds very similar to Gaga or even 'Wildest Dreams' where she sounds Lana Del Rey-esque.
Overall, I think this album will change the minds of people like me who used to hate her music. It is a very well-produced album with songs to help anyone through situations in life. Her voice is spectacular and the songs have good meanings and lyrics. I hope this album gets universal acclaim like it deserves.

Back when the album was first announced, I was extremely apprehensive and upset that she was doing a full pop album. From pop songs on Red, WANEGBT and 22, I thought that 1989 would just be an album filled with such songs.

Thankfully, my expectations were blown out of the water. Yes, 1989 is a full-on pop album that sounds like it fits into top 40 radio, but in this album she joins that herd of pop artists, and takes it up several notches. Despite the lack of specific details in her writing that made her old work song very real, she instead conjures vivid imagery and feelings with metaphors and sweeping statements, making the songs feel very universal and perfect for stadium chants. There is a newfound wit and self-awareness, proving that Swift has indeed matured.

The production is pop bliss, yet it doesn't feel generic at all. 80s influences are peppered everywhere, not too much such that it just feels like a tribute record, but it makes her brand of radio-friendly pop music very timeless and different from the rest.

Overall, Swift is a genius in music. She conquered country, and with her first full pop attempt, she has conquered it and mastered it better than any of her contemporaries. It really doesn't matter what genre she is in because Taylor Swift is a whole new genre of heartfelt and intelligent music, with endless hooks.

It's ok, i like it, but i think that is too repetitive, it's not her best work, for sure, and some songs have a little too much auto-tune, she doesn't need that, Pop doesn't mean auto-tune, but it's not bad.

The album is littered with great hit-worthy songs that find ways to blend the styles of Katy Perry, Lorde and Sia into one accessible album that doesn't get boring after a couple plays. "Shake It Off" may be the leading single here, but "Style", "Bad Blood", "Wonderland" and "Blank Space" are my go-to's on this album right now. Taylor Swift consegue ser "catchy" sem mudar sua essência. Um dos melhores discos pop dos últimos tempos. Style é capaz de viciar qualquer um, e vemos que ela não se prejudicou em nada deixando o banjo de lado.

1989 is first official pop album by taylor swift, so you can't expect another Red or Fearless from her, but she's here to stay. You just need to know what to expect from her. What I'm trying to say is 1989 is a 8 in its own ways, but nowhere near Red or any other of her previous works. Its unfair to compare it to them. You just have to accept the new TS.

I think this is the best album of Taylor Swift, a full transition to pop was a great decision, his vocals are clean, is a pop with quality and reliability, not only for fun but also to make us fall in love with it and have feelings that can not decipher completely. However the ballads are not very nice what a little piece on the album.
Highlights: Bad Blood and All You Had To Do Was Stay

I was really excited about 1989 and was looking forward to buying a bunch of songs ... until I heard them. Vapid, mindless, emotionally-empty lyrics set to droning, repetitive synthesizer music. It lacks the depth and complexity and raw emotion of previous albums, and the music, while not BAD for what it's TRYING to be, honestly is not trying to be very much. 1989 is an album whose songs lack ambition to be anything more than teenage slumber party sock-hop tunes.

I don't think the songs of 1989 will last more than a year in my playlist unlike her other albums.
And she'd better write songs on her own.. Max Martin and Shellback are minimizing Taylor's talent..

I have to hand it to her. Taylor Swift, combining this album and the absolute artistic bankruptcy of modern corporate radio, has found a way to violate my ears in ways I never thought they could be violated.

Let me be clear. I am here against my will. I have not had a desire to listen to a Taylor Swift song in my entire life. And yet, here I am, submitting a review for an atrocious album I never wished to hear a single track of, and feeling entirely within my rights to do so because I know more than 50% of it's tracks better than I know some Led Zeppelin songs I've been listening to for 20 years. Why? Because it is not possible to work in any office setting, take a bus, take a cab, take a subway, walk through any mall or shopping plaza in America without hearing her shrill, whiney lyrics bombarding your ears.

Perhaps you could say that I should not fault Ms. Swift for the overbearing omnipresence of her music. **** Taylor Swift has made millions (if not billions) of dollars by making exactly the music that corporate radio wants her to make. More than any of the pop queens out there, Swift is more than willing to make exactly the kind of music these devoid-of-any-talent hacks think will sell.

Which brings me to 1989. This album is garbage in musical form. It is a pop princess who has never seen a day's worth of misfortune in her life trying (and succeeding) in making a generation of nitwits think she is a victim. It is a 25-year-old woman writing about boys and relationships as if she were 13. And above all, it is the same **** in every song!!! I can only think of two reasons for this, neither of which cast Swift in a good light: 1.) Either she is a terrible artist who writes horrifically bad, derivative, and immature lyrics because she genuinely feels those emotions and sees life in that twisted way, or 2.) She is a greedy, cynical fat-cat in league with corporate radio to manipulate millions of dollars out of the pockets of tweenage girls and their parents. But no, because Kanye West was mean to her at the Grammy's that one time, everyone should feel sorry for her forever.

Sorry. I don't. Please go away Taylor.

Infantile, empty and of banal content. It serves to dance cleaning the house and just for that. Any beginner does something like that... Noooooooooooo

1989 is nothing new or remarkable, it's merely a record full of safe, bland pop music. Taylor lost all of the character and beauty that she poured into Speak Now and Fearless. The production on the album version of "Bad Blood" is horrendous. I'm very pleased that Taylor decided to do a remix with Kendrick Lamar. The remix is a 10/10. the album isn't without its highlights, though. Shake It1989 is nothing new or remarkable, it's merely a record full of safe, bland pop music. One word: Overrated
1989 is one of the poorest albums I've ever heard. I save Blank Space from the list, lyrically speaking, but the melody annoys me a lot. Many artists did the major idea of being the center of their songs, but I don't blame her for that, and I don't think is selfish at all, since every artist does some. The album makes it clear that is not Swift's voice or her own songs that makes the fame, but the supermodel salable face and "funny ballads". Just hated.

1989, though quite catchy at some points, was bland, littered with poor songwriting, and definitely not memorable. Taylor has moved into generic pop, which is a disappointment, since some of her earlier songs were much more meaningful. The vocals were definitely not awful, but they were not anything extraordinary either. Few of her songs on this album conveyed actual emotion.

The lyrics for 'Shake It Off' were repetitive and cringeworthy. Her attempt to rap ruins what little good remained of the song, right with the lyrics "this sick beat" and "hella good hair." The vocals in 'Wildest Dreams' were too breathy and annoying. The lyrics "He's so tall and handsome as hell / He's so bad but he does it so well" does not do anything to improve the song, though the chorus was not bad.
The other songs were either awfully terribly bad or just boring. I enjoyed some of Taylor's older songs, and I am severely disappointed at her attempt at pop. This album was more of a chore to listen to than an enjoyment.

I mean it's good for a pop album, but compared to her other work, it's generic. I expected more and was extremely disappointed. Even the songwriting on this album, was meh. I also don't see the 80's influence at all

Taylor came up with very advanced developments by boycotting performers above the top with 1989. A refreshment on failure this proves that Taylor will not be common or superior to another artist, thus being 1989 a common album with subject of ex boyfriends in fresh failure

This is just a generic pop album with an OK beat and immature lyrics. It is not an upgrade from her old work as I do not see any difference. The whole record sounds heavily country influenced but does not stand out in either the pop or country genre.

disgusting album. Taylor positioned himself as a country singer but ended up releasing a full pop album. All of her songs about her ex, she's terrible. 0 out of 10

Taylor loses her shine in this pop record. The melodies on the album aren't as cohesive or as impactful as her previous efforts and her lyricism and vocals are lost behind blistering pop productions.

Sorry but this album sucks in the worst way ever! I cannot imagine how bad this album is! Except for Out Of The Woods, I don't find any songs in this album worth a listen.

Original lyrics, but they songs are way repetitive, and the music is nothing original, it sounds like any other album these days. Just 3 tracks are redeemable, the rest sounds exactly the same. This is the perfect example of what a promotion could do.

With 1989 she has succeeded in leveraging the most cordial and familiar of pop music outpourings to something that feels like a statement, a work of note and the sinew of some kind of emotional connective tissue–binding tastemakers, rock critics, guys I work with and my 12 year old cousin; irrevocably and unexpectedly.

What stands out more than the production is how consistently solid the album is, and how effective the lyrics and songwriting.

1989 is full of cliches, but the truth is that we wouldn't expect them to not be present anyway.
