I've absolutely adored Taylor's previous albums and her whole country sound so when I heard she was releasing a full pop album I was quite disappointed.

Sonically, '1989' is very different than anything Taylor Swift has ever done, but when you stay faithful to your soul and your core, nothing you do will upset people. Her first 'official documented pop album' is just perfection made by the combination of catchy tunes, deep lyrics (as usual), great vocal performance, and confidence/sass kinda attitude. Here is every single track reviewed:
    1. Welcome to New York: This song, done with Ryan Tedder, serves its purpose with brilliance: Introducing Swift's most-sonically challenging album. Great track and New York Anthem.
    2. Blank Space: The first highlight of the album, produced by hitmakers Max Martin and Shellback, and written by Swift, this song offers everything there is: Love, Fun, Confidence, Dismissing what people say. EVERYTHING I tell ya!
    3. Style.: Another amazing song from amazing Mrs. Swift. I think what really shines on here are the reaaaally good lyrics (You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye/ And I got that red lip classic thing that you like.)
    4. Out of the Woods: The first promo single of the album, produced by Antonoff, sees Swift at her most experimental and adventurous yet. Really good song.
    5. All You Had To Do Was Stay: The verse emerges reminiscent of the Speak Now & Fearless eras (Lyrically speaking) and then the chorus hits and the world is slayed. I think what rings the most is the epic "Stay!"
    6. Shake It Off: Okay, if you still haven't heard this song, you must be living on Mars or something. A great haters-gonna-hate anthem, wisely chosen as the lead single.
    7. I Wish You Would: If you didn't like this track from the first listen, that's okay, I didn't either. But it really grew on me and realized the chorus is the most insane thing Taylor has ever done.
    8. Bad Blood: If it really is about Katy Perry, then I got bad news for her: Katy Perry, you are (unfortunately) very burned. Lyrically strong and great production. I mean, have you heard those beats?
    9. Wildest Dreams: Lana Del Rey, is that you? Taylor attempts a Lana-type-of-song, and she absolutely nails it. My second favourite off the album, after 'Blank Space'. Breathy vocals and production and dark lyrics, way to go!
    10. How You Get The Girl: The only song on '1989' that is not as memorable as the others. It's still good though, with typical Swift-lyrics, such as 'I want you for worse or for better/ I would wait forever and ever'.
    11. This Love: Written by Swift alone, this song is so much reminiscent of the Speak Now era, except it's pop. Breathy, dark and calm, this song is absolutely beautiful!
    12. I Know Places: The darkest song on the record. The lyrics hit too much, and the melodies will just sweep you off. Great attempt at change, Tay (especially with the 'They are the hunters, we are the foxes, and we run' line)!
    13. Clean: You like 'All Too Well'? Well this song is the closest to it on the record. Emotionally charged, this song serves as the perfect closer.

Remember when Lorde said that Taylor is a "perfectionist"? Well, she wasn't wrong, folks! Great album Taylor. (Hoping you'd go country again for your 2016 release). This album proves that Mrs. Swift still has a long career ahead of her. 10/10.

This album is exceptionally different from most pop album today. Comparing to her peers today (not to mention like Miley, Ariana, Katy, etc), her song lyrics are somewhat pretty obvious in here. It's not generic as what most pop hits today rather it's personal, affective and emotional. Shes way better from other pop stars.

This new album of Taylor Swift is a big step outside country music which is very well handled. Songs like Blank Spaces, How you get the girl, I know Places are the AWESOMEST. Even the NYC anthem is the one to look out for.

Lyrically best, sweet emotional, subtle sarcasm and life experiences makes it even more Special. Taylor has done it again.

This is one of those albums in which I love every single song on it which is quite rare with me. The last time I had an album with the same effect was with Ariana Grande's debut album 'Yours Truly' back in 2013 so its very nice to have an album that I can listen to without skipping any songs.
One major thing that appealed to me was how diverse her voice could be, especially in songs such as 'Welcome To New York' where she sounds very similar to Gaga or even 'Wildest Dreams' where she sounds Lana Del Rey-esque.
Overall, I think this album will change the minds of people like me who used to hate her music. It is a very well-produced album with songs to help anyone through situations in life. Her voice is spectacular and the songs have good meanings and lyrics. I hope this album gets universal acclaim like it deserves.

From pop songs on Red, WANEGBT and 22, I thought that 1989 would just be an album filled with such songs.

Thankfully, my expectations were blown out of the water. Yes, 1989 is a full-on pop album that sounds like it fits into top 40 radio, but in this album she joins that herd of pop artists, and takes it up several notches. Despite the lack of specific details in her writing that made her old work song very real, she instead conjures vivid imagery and feelings with metaphors and sweeping statements, making the songs feel very universal and perfect for stadium chants. There is a newfound wit and self-awareness, proving that Swift has indeed matured.

The production is pop bliss, yet it doesn't feel generic at all. 80s influences are peppered everywhere, not too much such that it just feels like a tribute record, but it makes her brand of radio-friendly pop music very timeless and different from the rest.

Overall, Swift is a genius in music. She conquered country, and with her first full pop attempt, she has conquered it and mastered it better than any of her contemporaries. It really doesn't matter what genre she is in because Taylor Swift is a whole new genre of heartfelt and intelligent music, with endless hooks.

1989 is first official pop album by taylor swift, so you can't expect another Red or Fearless from her, but she's here to stay. You just need to know what to expect from her. What I'm trying to say is 1989 is a 8 in its own ways, but nowhere near Red or any other of her previous works. Its unfair to compare it to them. You just have to accept the new TS.

There is a reason this is the most awarded pop album in history. Taylor manages to put together a beautiful collection of pop perfection. Entertaining and fresh sounding, with the exception of bad blood and how you get the girl, any one of the songs could be a single/hit.

Then Ryan Adams recorded and actually released a track back track cover of the album. This stoked my interest even further and I decided it had to be checked out. Yes it has sugar coated production dripping from every pore but when you break the songs down into their components, these are top notch as pop music goes. The vocal performance and the production work is of the highest quality and is especially noticeable when played through a good quality sound system rather than tinny earphones. The singles lifted from the album are the highlights and one fault I would pick out of the album is that is could arguably be a leaner beast but I have to say that overall, "1989" is one of my favourite albums of the year. Put your hipster attitude to the side and let yourself have some fun and listen to this. You might just enjoy it. Expand

Swift proved with this masterwork that not only could she do pop, but that she could do pop better than her contemporaries. From start to finish, the album raised the bar for pop music in the subsequent years, and proved that Swift’s experimentation (and risk-taking) had truly paid off.

Musicalmente falando, esse álbum tem faixas que machucam a sonoridade do álbum como "Welcome To New York, All You Had To do Was Stay, How You Get The Girl e Bad Blood".

Starting with "Welcome to New York" Taylor has a great, yet lowkey annoying album opener. The production is cute, but it's definetly not one of the better songs on the album. Number 1 smash hit single "Blank Space" follows, which is definetly one of the greatest tracks on the record. The song is incredibly catchy and well written. It proofs why Taylor is the new queen of pop. The best song on the record, the third single "Style" follows. It has the most flawless production on the album, flirty dark Lana Del Rey like lyrics make the song THE standout track of the album and maybe even the best song in her career. Other highlights of the album include "All You Had to Do Was Stay", "Wildest Dreams", "How You Get the Girl" and "New Romantics". The only song that makes me rate the album with 9/10 are "Shake It Off" which is literally a disgrace, also songs like "This Love", "Clean" and "You are in Love" which are definetly cute and really good still can't hold the greatness of the other tracks. All in all the album is incredible and one of Swift's best work. I suggest to buy it.

The thing is I fell in love with each one of the singles when they came out, and those feelings have just gotten stronger over the years. The other songs though... Honestly? It wasn’t so bad. Opener ‘Welcome to New York’ takes a few listens to properly get into, but it’s definitely a song which feels weaker than the rest since it doesn’t really go anywhere. This is immediately followed by my personal favourite ‘Blank Space’ – a splendid piece of self-depreciation on Swift’s well reported romances, and if there’s one thing I appreciate in an artist it’s the ability to not take themselves too seriously. ‘Out of the Woods’ is the best song on the record, in fact it’s the only song on the album that I feel could have actually come out of 1989, whilst ‘Wildest Dreams’ and closer ‘Clean’ are two of the slower tracks (also the only ones that avoid suffering from overproduction – more on that later). ‘Bad Blood’ is, lyrically at least, the worst song on the record. Check out the version released as a single featuring Kendrick Lamar – his cameo alone makes the song so much better.

The biggest issue I have is the overproduction of the record; I’m aware that this is a modern pop record, but they could hold back at least (‘This Love’ is a prime example, starting off as a stripped down ballad but then employs an unnecessary synth line in there – had it been performed with some restraint and not in the style of something akin to dubstep I wouldn’t have minded).

So what can I say? It’s an album I had low expectations for but it surprised me, I enjoyed it far more than I should have but I still have issues with it. Did it deserve to beat Kendrick Lamar at the Grammys? Did it deserve a place in 1001 Albums over To Pimp A Butterfly? No, I think my life would have been the same even without listening to this. But hey, at least it was fun.

GOLD, n Style!! This song is flames. First of all, that title. Naming a song that you will never explicitly say is about your ex with a literal variation of that ex's name is next level. But then to have that song be maybe the best one on your album? It's positively inspirational. Here's Taylor on the subject: "We should have just called it 'I'm Not Even Sorry.'" For what it's worth, Lorde also loves "Style," and this writer can confirm that you don't have to be in a car with T-Swift on the Pacific Coast Highway for it to provoke chair-dancing. Expand

In this album we can see that Pop is not just scandals, meat dressing, being ridiculous, being naked, it has good songs, a lot of them with a great meaning like This Love, other songs were hits that are going to be remembered to the eternity

With 1989 she has succeeded in leveraging the most cordial and familiar of pop music outpourings to something that feels like a statement, a work of note and the sinew of some kind of emotional connective tissue–binding tastemakers, rock critics, guys I work with and my 12 year old cousin; irrevocably and unexpectedly.

What stands out more than the production is how consistently solid the album is, and how effective the lyrics and songwriting.

1989 is full of cliches, but the truth is that we wouldn't expect them to not be present anyway.
