This guileless, wistfully romantic harmony pop suits them much better. [Jul 2015, p.96]

Up front, Island is punk-pop par excellence, while, toward the end, Dorian's a blissful medium pacer about carefree journey home. [Jul 2015, p.114]

Most of the album is kinda ho-hum and overly mild in tone, as is Pitts's voice.

Surfer Blood have regained their freedom with 1000 Palms; next time, they need to do something interesting with it.

Surfer Blood tease at a break away from the formula, but because 1000 Palms is a mostly unsatisfying grab for a standardized sound, even the most interesting moments fade away into the gray motionlessness.

Many critics seem to go starry eyed when pop artists lean towards rock, but so much less so in the other direction - which is dumb. I feel like the amount of craft needed to make a record like 1000 Palms gets totally slept on. I love a lot of these songs and like all of them. Great record. Full Review »
