Ottimo film d'animazione che affronta molti temi riguardo la società odierna con una sceneggiatura ben bilanciata.
Belli i personaggi, stupenda l'animazione e molto carina la colonna sonora.

Zootopia is too explicit to be for the whole family but that makes it shine with charismatic characters and a crazy and solid story.

As someone who has been an enormous Disney fan all my life (the only films that don't do much for me are 'Chicken Little', 'Home on the Range' and 'The Black Cauldron', if it counts also 'Planes'), Zootropolis may not be as good as the bestAs someone who has been an enormous Disney fan all my life (the only films that don't do much for me are 'Chicken Little', 'Home on the Range' and 'The Black Cauldron', if it counts also 'Planes'), Zootropolis may not be as good as the best of classic Disney or the 'big four' of the Renaissance era.

However, it is for me the jewel of Disney's 'second renaissance' (their return to form era starting with 'The Princess and the Frog', and if it counts -might not as it is Disney Toon Studios- their only misfire from that era is 'Planes'). Despite a couple of issues 'The Princess and the Frog' was still enormously entertaining. 'Tangled was Disney's best since 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (not sure how much of a popular opinion that is though), until the even better 'Wreck it Ralph' took that title. 'Winnie the Pooh' was immensely charming and sweet with its one problem being that it was too short. 'Frozen' despite what people say to me was the best animated film of 2013 besides 'Ernest et Celestine' (and the amount of hate it gets and the detractors' attitude towards those who loved, or even liked, the film has been blown way out of proportion). And 'Big Hero 6' was fun and touching with one of Disney's most endearing characters in recent years in Baymax.

Onto the review properly for 'Zootropolis' now. The animation is fantastic with rich colours, vivid, beautifully designed and colourful backgrounds and lovingly designed characters whose movements flow fluidly and never robotically. Some of it is even very inventive and imaginative in the set pieces. Michael Giacchino's score is cleverly orchestrated, energetic and catchy, not as good as his scores for the ones for the Pixar films 'Up' and 'Inside Out' but it complements 'Zootropolis' very well indeed.

'Zootropolis' has some very smart and hilarious writing, cleverly balancing sly references, witty humour and also genuine pathos and heart with few if any awkward tonal shifts. The visual gags are similarly inventive and a joy to watch. The story is so consistently well paced and involving and is told with such energy, charm and heart that some may forget the storyline being predictable. To me, it had enough originality to not make it matter that much. What was also impressive about 'Zootropolis' was how it dealt with such heavy and wholly relevant themes and issues, one of most daring along with 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' and deal with it with a light touch. Some did find the message (one that's easy to identify with) forced and heavy-handed, it wasn't an issue to me at all, to this viewer it was incorporated well and respectfully.

The characters in 'Zootropolis' are interesting - all serving a point to the story- with colourful personalities, none of them felt bland, none felt shoe-horned in, none felt annoying and none felt unnecessary. Love the sassiness and charm of the protagonist, and while the twist wasn't a surprise as such the villain did serve a good threat and more interesting than the recent Disney twist villains. The voice acting is just terrific from all, especially from Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman. Can't go wrong with Idris Elba, JK Simmons and Maurice LaMarche either.

All in all, with the one small exception of the forgettable and slightly grating main song from Shakira (which was not enough to bring the film down personally) 'Zootropolis' was a superb film, not only of Disney's post-2009 films but also one of their best post-Tarzan and towards the top end in the Disney animated film ranking. 10/10 Bethany Cox

The first time I saw it, it was coming on TV. I watched it from the middle, it was in Hindi and my board exams were coming up, because of which I only watched it from the part where Judy is seeing Nick sell the Jumbo sized candy till the part where Nick records Judy saying she's a dumb bunny. Obviously it didn't tell me anything about the story, but it gave me a demo of what this movie is - a gorgeous animation with great character development. It was finally two years later that I watched the whole movie.
The story revolves around Judy Hopps, a small town bunny who has moved to the big city called Zootopia where she decides to become a cop. The other character is Nick Wilde, a street smart fox who uses cunning tactics to get quick money. Both of them team up to find out what is making the carnivores aggressive. As they go out to find out the criminal, they explore Zootopia, interact with many animals over there and learn what it means to be a citizen in a diverse city.
This movie is one of the best social commentaries I have ever seen in a movie. The carnivores are animals who have hunted down the herbivores and even other carnivores for centuries. Because of this the herbivores are always afraid of the carnivores, even though they pretend to be politically correct by saying everyone is equal. As a result when it was found out that the carnivores were "getting back to their original instincts", everyone was getting terrified from them, since now they believe their wellbeing is more important than social harmony.
Later on it's revealed why they were being hypnotised to be violent, which is very similar to the facism on the rise. The carnivores are metaphors of blacks/Muslims/other communities who have recently been seen as equal people, whom we are told to hate solely for the sake of vote banks. The movie was made in 2016, which was the year when facism had just begun growing. In reality no one wants to hate each other, but they are taught to do so since childhood, by the politicians and the media.
The best thing about Zootopia is what I had already seen. The animation is absolutely spectacular. The development of all the main characters was done very well. Both Nick and Judy learnt a lot throughout the movie and were able to move ahead as what they are. The world building is pretty good, considering it's not even two hours long. The sense of humour was subtle. It was neither cringy nor outrageously hilarious. It went completely with the tone, especially the sloths in the bank scene.
The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the plot twist, now that I think about it. It was pretty good according to the time I saw it, but back then I hadn't watched a lot of movies and later on I realised many kids' movies use the same plot twist (Incredibles 2, Cars 2, Detective Pikachu, Shazam!, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 etc. I don't want to give any spoilers so you can figure out what the plot twist is).
Zootopia is one of the most iconic animated movies. It's not saying much considering almost every Disney movie is iconic, but this one is one of the better ones compared to the mindless comedy animated movies that are made only for earning quick buck (The Emoji Movie came just a year after it and was also targeted for the audience of the same age group). It's a movie I'd definitely show to my kids in the future. I can already see myself get nostalgic when I'll watch it.

It only exists as a means for Disney to push an agenda on the current generation to politically radicalise them into leftism. The characters were plain at best and the comedy often fell flat or was cringe inducing at the worst of scenes. The movie hardly deserved the praise it received from the public for being "a kids movie tackling important societal issues", when it shouldn't have relied on being political to be a good kids movie. The only positive thing about this film is its well done CGI. That's it. Expand

The Best Film Of The Year, So Far.

From the studio that brought you Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen & Big Hero 6, Zootopia surfaces as a highly original, incredibly refreshing, thoroughly engaging, surprisingly timely & delightfully subversive beast fable about prejudice & stereotype that not only marks a new creative high for Disney but is arguably the finest film that this legendary animation studio has come up with in their Revival Era, so far.

Set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, the story of Zootopia takes place in the titular metropolis and follows a bunny cop named Judy Hopps who, despite her par excellent performance in the class, is assigned parking duty by her superior. But when she volunteers to undertake a missing-predator case, she is given 48 hours to solve the mystery or resign, following which she blackmails a sly fox into helping her, and uncovers a sinister conspiracy.

Co-directed by Byron Howard & Rich Moore, the duo put up an intriguing world on the screen that does have a fresh quality but there is still a deep sense of familiarity to it. However, where the two leave a lasting impression is in finding that perfect balance between its consistently gripping storyline & moments of pure hilarity. The writing staff also deserves a mention, for their screenplay brims with numerous pop culture references, parodies many renowned classics & handles its topical themes with care.

The 3D animation is absolutely top-notch, for the images retain its crispness, clarity & vibrancy from beginning to end. The animators put up a vast number of characters on the screen, ranging from the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, yet they are all given a well-defined arc. Cinematography further enhances the overall look n feel of the story with its fluid camera-work, splendid use of colour palette & spot-on lighting. Editing provides just enough screen time to all the relevant characters while moving the plot forward at a blistering pace.

The cast is wisely chosen, and all the actors do a competent job in lending their voice & soul to the mammals they play. Ginnifer Goodwin brings a bubbly side to the new cop in town and confidently plays her role. Jason Bateman plays his part with finesse plus his voice really fits his cynical con artist character. Also, the chemistry between the two is a highlight in itself. Michael Giacchino's ebullient score seamlessly blends in & compliments the narrative while Shakira beautifully wraps everything up with a catchy, uplifting & wonderful song that smartly summarises its themes & message.

On an overall scale, Zootopia finds Disney stepping out of its comfort zone to tackle a bold, ambitious & risky project, and it is one gamble that pays off tremendously well in the studio's favour. Also, its arrival couldn't have been better, considering how its elements of prejudice & stereotypes mirror the racial hostilities present in our very own current social environment. An ingenious blend of sophisticated storytelling, jubilant humour & thought-provoking themes that amazes, entertains & enlightens without ever compromising with the fun factor, Zootopia is a definite delight for viewers of all ages, and is undoubtedly the best film of the year, so far. Strongly recommended.

This is one of Disney's most recent big hits, and it's good to see the most traditional animated film studio experiencing again some days of strength and energy, after more or less twenty years of difficulties. The film was, in all fairness,This is one of Disney's most recent big hits, and it's good to see the most traditional animated film studio experiencing again some days of strength and energy, after more or less twenty years of difficulties. The film was, in all fairness, a resounding commercial and critical success, in addition to having a pertinent story about prejudices and stereotypes.

The story centers on Judy Hopps, a rabbit that goes to the big city with the dream of joining the Police. But things are not easy: she is small in a universe of strong and large animals, and her companions don't take her seriously, even when she gets her first arrest. Thus, she volunteers to investigate the missing of Emmit Otterton, one among several Zootopia inhabitants who has vanished. For that, she will count on the forced collaboration of a swindler, crafty fox named Nick Wilde. And she will have to be quick, because her commander has imposed a deadline for her to present results or to resign from the force.

In addition to being magnificently elaborated and animated, this film has a really good story with a pedagogical and humanistic background, insofar as it teaches us to disbelieve prejudices and preconceived ideas, as only strong men serve for the Police or Army, or all foxes are swindlers. There are so many ideas like that in our society (all blondes are unintelligent, all Frenchmen hate bathing, all Russians drink too much...) and all are unfair or unfounded prejudices. In addition to this moralizing message, the film is entertaining with good doses of comedy (the scenes with the sloths are anthological) and an engaging and interesting mystery surrounding the animals that disappeared.

In addition to the characters being truly adorable, the film has a very competent voice cast, and the synchronization between animations and voices is perfect. Personally, I really liked the contributions of Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Raymond S. Persi and Maurice LaMarche, the latter with an excellent imitation of Marlon Brando's hoarse voice. Musical moments are also present due to the unmistakable voice of Shakira, who was also entitled to give life to a character: the slender superstar Gazelle. It suits her!

Technically, the film makes an impact due to the superb quality of animations and visual effects. Colorful, it was so clearly designed and beautifully edited an mixed that animations and characters took on an almost palpable realism. The conception of that city, with all its distinct but interconnected biomes allowing a better perception of how animals connect to their natural environment, also deserves an applause. Finally, I have to praise to Michael Giacchino's excellent soundtrack and the original song “Try Everything”.

Toda sátira feita aqui a sociedade é interessantíssima.

Super recomendado!

It tackles a large number of social issues (racism, bullying, prejudice, sexism, inequality, stereotyping, etc.). Zootopia's world is inhabited by two main groups of mammals: predators and preys. The beautiful thing about this movie is that it depicts racism and prejudice in a very "equal" way: predators and preys do not correspond to any human race existing on this planet. The directors and the staff have been very sensitive and clever in my opinion for doing that. It gives the movie a sense of universality. This movie is plenty of details, references, puns, etc. It is definitely very funny, entertaining and the computer graphics are just stunning. The movie also has sad/emotional scenes and that makes you feel empathy towards the main characters, Judy and Nick (who are simply AMAZING), but they also help create a bond between them. The message at the end of this film also had a huge impact on me. It may sound cliché but it is definitely beautiful and praiseworthy. One last thing, I highly highly highly recommend this movie to both kids and (especially) adults (but also teenagers XD)! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

I must say watching this with my son I was very entertained, that said the lofty moral concepts it discusses dont seem to fit into the screenplay comfortably leading to some very akward dialogue between (entirely anthropomorphised cg animals in clothes).... Seems like it tried too hard to go to deep with its concept and misses the opportunity to better motivate and flesh out the secondary characters.... That being said, you'd have to be having a bad day not to enjoy watching this one with your kids!

It's not a masterpiece, nor a terrible movie, it's not obnoxious and annoying like an Illumination movie by any means, but it's far from Disney's best work. I will not deny that Zootopia, the city, actually feels like another character. It is filled with creative concepts and ideas. The animation is great, as expected from Disney and the characters are filled with tons of personality thanks to creative character design. They aren't cute for the sake of being cute nor look like generic animal characters like some other animated movie with cute animals that came out the same year (CofcofSingcofcof) and the story actually takes advantage of the fact that they are animals. Also, this is a really funny movie. I always have a blast with this movie everytime I watch it, there are so many genuinely funny moments that I really enjoyed. Nick and Judy, the main characters, have a great dynamic, and are so fun to watch together. For the most part it is well written...For the most part, I said. My problems with this movie are with the script. The social commentary and the racism allegories are soooo on the nose and obvious, you might think that "it's okay because it's a kids movie", but I disagree, because there are kids movies with subtle social commentary and parallels to the real world, like Chicken Run, I mean it's not like they had a character explain to the audience that they are in a concentration camp or something, and that is how Zootopia feels. It gets so on the nose at one point that it becomes cheesy instead of shocking. I was also not a really big fan of some obvious furry pandering stuff, like the animal nudist club scene or the weirdly sensual dancing tigers at the dancing number at the end, those moments were awkward...Speaking about that, I hated the ending, it was so cringeworthy. It ended great but no...They needed a dance scene, because that is DEFINETLY not an animated kids movie cliché!

Overall, I don't hate this movie. It's pretty good actually, but definetly not a great movie. I agree with people that say that it didn't deserve the Oscar, it should've gone to Moana, which is a far superior film in almost every aspect. Regardless, Zootopia is one of the better modern Disney films, I mean, at least it's better than Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Ralph Breaks the Internet

But overall this movies was amazing Flash and Clawhouser made for amazing comic reliefs and Nick and Judy made one of the best unexpected teams. The story was light and fun in the beginning but got dark and meaningful by the second half which was awesome! The Greatest Animated Movie of All Time!

This movie is an absolute masterpiece, not only because its wonderful way that gives its many messages in; but also because the importance of its messages in themselves and how smart they are and relevant to nowadays, and also how much the children really need these morals nowadays. Also, it's beautifully animated and the talented cast voices suit their characters perfectly. It has a plenty of funny scenes which we didn't watch before in any animated movie or even a live-action movie. This movie is like a comedy-adventure-action-crime movie and despite that it never made the viewers feel confused while watching it. The characters are definitely the most complicated characters I've ever seen in an animated movie, each character has its own point of view due to the experiences they get through and that makes each character has different motives and feelings.

Disney is always surprising me with its great animated movies. It's really has a very good elements to add of its movies, that I didn't find them in any other animated movie.
The most important element is the surprising element. It really got me in this movie, it was really effective.
The second element is the animation, it was absolutely perfect.
The third is comedy, it was really hilarious.
The fourth is the action sequences, it was really amazing and talented.
The fifth is the cast (voices), it was very talented and they are just voices, they really got me closer to the movie and they are just voices.
The sixth is never get bored of watching it, I watched it 26 times and never got bored of it!
It really deserves A+.

However, it fails to communicate meaningful messages to younger audiences. More alarmingly though, Zootopia misrepresents the fundamental nature of racism and produces a story which is grossly irrelevant in the modern sense. Zootopia ignores the institutional and structural ways in which racism is perpetuated in modern areas, instead presenting a sort of whitewashed 80s-era "we stopped hating people of color" mindset. As Zootopia is marketed as a family movie, it's masterful production quality is largely dwarfed by its perpetuation of a destructive erasure of structural racism. Expand

There's a lot of nuanced expressions frame by frame scattered through the film that will require a few viewings to catch all of; The animation is superb and very fluid. Comedy isn't anything cringe-inducing and it's a genuinely fun watch. Characters are well designed and the world they reside in feels quite large.

The political messages were obvious and felt a bit forced, but I suppose in a universe with nothing but animals living in one city, they couldn't not take the chance to engage in some fantastical racism. That's all well and good but they try so hard to tie it into today's problems which I feel are more complicated than what they exemplify in Zootopia. Then again, all the tension and conflict between the city's people resulted from an international conspiracy via the government..hmmm....

Well regardless, it's a decent movie and will probably get a sequel. It's got my blessings.

SomeOne great thing I like Zootopia is that it emphasizes the racial differences between its characters and addresses discrimination and prejudice. These themes on this movie are so critical to be included in an animation film like this. Some adults, when they first see this movie will think that it is an another "for children and teenagers" movie because of it's characters being anthropomorphic (animals behaving/acting as humans) and obviously an animated feature film; but it is much more than that, the movie will deliver a meaningful message about these strong themes and main ideas that will have a significant impact into a "socially aware" viewer's perception of racial differences.

Kids and teenagers will benefit greatly in the animation for this movie thanks to its wonderful characters along with their voice actors/actresses, amazing animation, and an energetic rhythm, that seems to be emanating from the film because of its vivid animation, which adds excitement and enjoyment while watching.

The setting of the movie is vibrant and admirable because of its pretty advanced architectural designs which is hard to be animated, in my opinion. I mean look at the design of some buildings in the movie primarily the windows and other glass structures, they sparkle when the sunlight reaches them. The complexity of animating these features are worth noting for. The scope of the area of Zootopia in the movie adds admiration for some viewers and of course, for myself; because of its diversity and relevance to a modern-day New York City or Los Angeles.

The main soundtrack "Try Everything" from Shakira is great. It adds excitement and hype for the movie as the music plays and the film explores the city from different angles to discover it's unique landmarks and tourist spots. The two main characters, Judy (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick (voiced by Jason Bateman) are admirable as well along with their chemistry. I like the personality of Nick Wilde in the movie because he tends to be quick-witted and intelligent which transcends the film to be fast-paced on some scenes.

Overall, a very recommended movie for everyone. This will surprise. A very strong and formidable Oscar contender for the year Zootopia is released.

Rating: 8/10 -> 4/5 stars

Why Zootopia is revolutionary and should be taught in film school ================================================================

1. The way they created and designed the city.

2. Using colors and deliberately simple animation not just to make the movie appeal to children, but also to indicate the so-called ideal city where every animal is pure and innocent.

3. Blending more than genre in a single animated film while keeping the plot spotless and not messy.

4. Delivering many contemporary messages that have never been in animated movies before, and all that without making us feel confused or muddled.

5. Using the on-the-surface message (achieve one's ambition) as a characteristic of the main character (Judy Hopps), not as the actual main message. That makes this message works as a motive not as a major theme in the movie as in ,for instance, Wreck-It Ralph (I LOVE it though ♥).

6. Avoiding being over-sentimental although Nick's character could have been easily used to manipulate our feelings.

A movie to watch with anyone and made for all ages, is rich in detail, has a beautiful graphic and soundtrack, and several interesting characters; I sympathized with Nick Wilde too much.
It's a movie that I did not feel like watching at the time, but it surprised me a lot.

A great plot with some interesting twists, fantastic animation, and a very interesting setting. The only reason this isn't getting a 10 is because the message, though positive, is a bit too on the nose. The message itself is fine but while watching, you will feel like it's coming across as more of a lesson geared towards people involved and paying attention to the U.S.'s current situation.

However, the alternative message of fulfilling your dreams and perseverance is definitely more appealing. Call me insane, but I honestly think this is better than Frozen. Frozen was a fine film but it may have been a bit too overrated on its debut. Zootopia has received just enough praise and criticism.

However, upon watching this in theatres I was blown away, and stole the spot for my favourite animated movie of the year from 'Kubo and the Two Strings'. It's clever commentary on current racial discrimination in society is astounding, and all carried out by one of the most likeable duos to come from Disney, that play off each other perfectly well. This proved to me that there are still gems in current animated movies, even if said gems use the 'two conflicting characters have to work together to get what they want and by the end they like each other' cliché. The two's bond feels natural given both their backstories and the peaks and troughs of their relationships are understandable and necessary for their arks. Pretty much my only problem with this was the antagonist, namely her motivation, which is basically that she is just really, really racist. This causes her to come across as incredibly 2-dimensional, and I've come to expect more from Disney, especially in a movie like this, but I guess nothing can be perfect. However, despite that, I overall strongly believe this is some of Disney's best work and would recommend it to any fan of animation. Expand

This could quite possibly the best modern Disney animated movie out there. The story it tells is absolutely beautiful, the characters are easily relatable and funny, and this could be some of Disney's best animation yet. It brings an entire city to life which is absolutely gorgeous for what it is, the character design has the trademark Disney flare, and the setting of the movie is beautiful. But surprisingly andBefore the film is released, I wasn't expecting Zootopia to be Disney's masterpiece of 2016, I was expecting this to be a fun and enjoyable film with talking animals and an appetizer before Moana comes out. But surprisingly and thought-provokingly, it became of one of Disney's best films since The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. This is a fine example of how Disney Animation can prove to the public that they are the greatest animation studio of all time, even beating out Pixar by their own standards. With low points of Home on the Range and Chicken Little, to 11 years later, all the way back to the top of their game with this, all thanks to its clever story, perfect writing, a perfect balance of humour and drama, a lot of intense, heartwarming, touching and memorable moments, best character moments, a strong bond, chemistry and connection between Judy and Nick, great musical score, excellent animation, a large cast of three-dimensional characters and a powerful anti-racism message of prejudice and discrimination. It's not just one of Disney's best works, it's also one of their smarter and more mature films. If you enjoyed anthropomorphic animal films like Robin Hood, you would love this movie even more. This is a must-watch for the whole family. It is a perfect family film. I gave it a perfect 10 out of 10. Expand

The movie is very pretty. Sadly, that's the only thing positive I feel I can confidently say about it. The premise revolves a buddy cop duo trying to solve a crime while using the power of trying not to be racist.

When it comes to the plot of the movie, it's about as cookie cutter as you could possibly get with a kids buddy cop movie. The two main characters wander around town, looking for clues from punchline characters. Like the sloths at the DMV, or the little mobster rat. They only function as jokes to move the plot forward and don't feel like real characters. Then to top off the cookie cutter plot, we end with yet another Scooby Doo villain twist that the new Disney movies seem to be fond of.

Now the message of the movie is fine an all. But it's so repeatedly over-preachy and hypocritical. The main character Judy blurts out constant exposition about not discriminating against others and how we should all be accepting. You will literally hear lines as blatant and forced as "Gideon was a jerk that happened to be a fox. I know plenty of bunnies who are jerks." or of course, the obvious "A bunny can call another bunny cute, but when other animals do it, it's kinda..." Yeah it's that bad. Then for as "non-racist" as Judy tries to make herself seem, she ends up being pretty freaking racist. Complaining about the slow sloths or pulling out her fox repellent when her partner, Nick, gives a very unconvincing scare.

The bland plot and stupidly shove down our throats message could easily be overlooked if the cast of characters were enjoyable. Sadly this isn't the case. Aside from the main duo, Judy and Nick, you won't be seeing anyone three-dimensional or developed. Like I mentioned previously, nearly all the side characters we see exist for nothing more than a gag. The characters who do serve a purpose have no development and just flip flop all over the place. Judy's racist parents for example. Throughout the entire movie they warn her about foxes and don't change until the the plot needs Judy to succeed. All of a sudden Gideon Grey is here out of nowhere, says "night howlers" and then vanishes again for the rest of the movie. Other characters who hated Judy like Chief Bogo, only change when the plot demands it. Instead of being sparked and learning to admire Judy overtime based on her determination, he only decides "Oh, I like her now" because she solved the crime and the plot demands for it.

The animation I can be very positive about though. It's fun and creative, and creates a world in which only these characters could live in. Zootopia has everything you could possibly imagine for these animals. Trains with different sized doors and separate districts in the city for rodents and other small animals are just a couple of the interesting things you'll find. The furs and other textures on the characters all look remarkable and very well done.

Overall, Zootopia may look nice on the outside, but the two characters we're stuck with do nothing but force a message down our throat and then hypocritically contradict themselves. They don't set a good example for the obvious message they try too desperately to get across. The consequences for this being that it makes the only two main protagonists we're stuck with seem unlikable as they don't even heed their own words. The animation is spectacular, but that's the only good thing that can be said. With a Scooby Doo plot, bland cast of characters, a hammered into the ground moral, and at least some sparkly visuals, Zootopia wouldn't be anything I'd recommend anytime soon.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was invested in this movie for the first two thirds, then by the third act I just wanted the movie to end.
The first few trailers seem like they were made for a different movie(Judy had a tranquilizer gun that's not in the movie and Nicks' aggression towards Judy, was implied to be based on his instincts which they are not).
About 8 minutes into the movie we get this movies "red herring villain". like in Frozen and Big Hero 6 (two other movies made by the same people) we are also introduced to the surprise villain, who was included just so there could be a twist reveal. I figured out who the "real" villain was 8 minutes into the movie, not because it made sense that this character was the villain, but because the writers have done this for the third time in a row.
After Judy becomes a police officer, she arrives at Zootopia where we are introduced to a stereotype of a fat cop who call Judy "cute". Judy's response was "only other bunnies can call bunnies cute" which is supposedly about how some people use derogative terms in a friendly manner, and get offended when someone else uses it. The movie never address the problems of using derogative terms in a friendly manner, it just wanted to make a joke.
Judy begins an investigation about missing animals to prove her worth as a cop, and tries to acquire the help of a reluctant witness, Nick a con artist fox.(Who is suppose to be a "don't judge a book by its cover" character, except it turns out her first judgment of him being a crook was right.) By blackmailing him, which the movie tries to make it look like she out smarted him, but makes her look like a crooked cop. Even though she is suppose to be a naïve cop.
After awhile the two become unlikely partners, and find the missing animals who were being taken away because they, for some unknown reason became savage. This is where the movie lost it for me, as Judy makes a statement to the press in which she suggests the that the reason the animals went savage might be, because of "their biology as predators" something she heard from doctors. Nick then reacts as if he has never heard this idea before (which he has several times) and accuses Judy of being prejudice against predators (even though the movie has establish she isn't) and 'Nick' told Judy to make the press statement. Nick pretends to attack Judy to justify his point, in which she reacts by reaching for her fox repellant (something that cops in Zootopia can apparently use). This come off as Nick over reacting, because at this point no one knows why predators are going savage and in an early scene Nick was running away from a predator that went savage,he should be afraid that might happen to him, or at least question why it was happening.
This made me roll my eyes because I knew the writer forced this fight, just to have them make up later. Judy shocked by how her statement to the press has divided the city, quits being a cop. The character who defiantly became a cop when everyone including her parents said she couldn't, just quits instead of trying to help. Our Hero.
Of course Judy finds out a plant is the cause behind the animals going savage, from her father talking about the same plant they grow on the family farm. That Judy some how doesn't know about, yet is knowledgeable about farming. Again feels like the writers trying to make the film longer.
And finally in the last act Judy apologizes to Nick, Judy threatens a crook with death by the mob to get infomation, the twist villain is revealed (which I hoped the movie wouldn't do) whose motivation is a basic villain plan. They stop the villain Nick becomes a cop (even though he wanted to be in the scouts) and the movie finally ends.

The movie tries to talk about prejudice but feels very disingenuous, it feels like the movie was made to appeal to people that blame stuff on racial hate. Judy and Nick have no chemistry, they are only friends at the end because the script said so. Its well animated but not that interesting visually, felt like a mundane trip around the city most of the movie.

The story is very entertaining and smart, and has great and very fleshed out characters. And unlike most animated films today, Zootopia manages to keep it's tone more mature, which adults can get some enjoyment out of. The animation is without a doubt very beautiful, with every shot of the movie looking gorgeous. The acting is pretty solid without one bad performance, and the dialogue is good as well. Some of the problems I have with the film is how predictable it felt sometimes. The twist reveal was pretty obvious to me, and the 3rd act, while good, wasn't as good as the first two and kinda slowed the movie down. And some of the music didn't fit with some of the scenes. Overall, this is one of the better animated movies of today, and I would recommend this to children and adults alike. Expand

Before I thought it was just cause the furry like having more characters for fan art but now I see it's more then that. It is very well done. The animation is great, the humor is great, the characters are likeable and the message about bigotry between races. I did guess out the villain near the end but not so much the motive and evil plot so I wouldn't consider it totally predictable. So that's a very minor issue. Never thought I see a 3D non-Pixar Disney movie be so good but I would recommend this one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a rare achievement indeed that a movie can move me to tears (through sheer heartwarming/moving goodness), let alone do it multiple times. When that happened, I knew this movie had just become one of my favorites ever. The plot is excellently paced, with not a single scene feeling out of place, or too long/short, and if you figure out who the main villain is before the Natural History Museum scene, mad props to you (I didn't until then). It also allows for wonderful character development, which is often what separates the great movies from the excellent ones.

Easily the best part of the movie is the two leads, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, and their interaction. They have a great chemistry that just builds and builds from their first scene, and the way their relationship builds is also excellent and very natural (from reluctantly working with one another to friendly to the best of friends, and also possibly more - the ending is kind of ambiguous) - in fact, it was the scene where Nick stands up to Chief Bogo in defense of Judy that brought tears to my eyes, because it showed how well the movie had done at building these characters up, at characterizing them, and making me care about them, that it ended up being such a powerful, moving scene.

Additionally, the setting is very vibrant, and full of life - it can honestly be considered a character as well, it's got so much personality, and is so fully, wonderfully realized. A lot of that has to do with the absolutely gorgeous animation and set design - so many of the locales are just breathtaking. My personal favorite is the Rainforest District, but I might be biased because I love tropical(-ish) areas like that. To be fair, one of the best scenes in the movie takes place in that area (conveniently, the scene I just mentioned above, in fact!), so that might be it as well. If I had one complaint, it might be that we don't get to see enough of all the areas (the desert area, Sahara Square, kind of gets the shaft, as the only time we see the characters there is when Judy first discovers Nick's and Finnick's hustle with the pawpsicles), but it's a minor one and doesn't detract at all from the film.

Going back to the topic of the animation, the character animation is also top-notch. All the characters are wonderfully designed and expressive (especially Nick and Judy, but that should be a given, being that they're the two leads), and the level of detail given to them is just incredible. I especially love Nick's expressiveness (and considering his character, especially at the beginning, he needs it). However, the detail and expressiveness would have just been wasted had the voice cast not been up to the task.

Thankfully, that is not the case, as all the roles are played commendably. In particular, Ginnifer Goodwin's Judy Hopps is wonderfully earnest and caring yet tough, and captures her personality of never backing down, never giving up, even when the world tries to put her down, perfectly, (which makes the scenes of Judy obviously distraught with herself all the more sad), while Jason Bateman's performance as Nick Wilde has just the right amount of snark and sarcasm to make him likable, and when his character finally drops his mask and opens up to Judy (which happens right after Nick defends her) he is able to change his performance just enough to make it believable, without overdoing anything. Of the other actors, I particularly liked Jenny Slate (because the way she voices Assistant Mayor Bellwether makes her eventual role in the plot all the more surprising, plus her often matter-of-fact delivery helps out with some funny comedy on at least one occasion), and Nate Torrence as Clawhauser really helps to bring the comedy (he's such a funny character, you wouldn't expect him to handle his one sad scene as well as he does - but handle it Torrence does). All in all, it's an A+ voice cast.

There is also a lot of great comedy, both laugh-out-loud stuff and subtler gags. I honestly didn't remember the first time watching through simply because of the heartwarming/uplifting moments, but some of my favorites are the ending stinger, Chief Bogo using the Gazelle dancing app, and anything with Clawhauser.

Finally, last but certainly not least, I felt I should cover the message. I think this movie presents an important message, especially considering the times we seem to unfortunately be headed towards, without getting too overly preachy - its message of inclusion and diversity, and the destructive effects of fear and creating "The Other" are beacons of light in the darkness that seems to be all-consuming in these times, and will hopefully begin to shine with a renewed vigor again soon. It was a marvelous idea to have anthropomorphic animals represent this, and it allows for a message that can cut closer to home without being rejected by the viewer. The message can be laid on a little thick at times, but it's a forgivable flaw in an otherwise perfect film.

Disney took a leap of faith, and the reward is an animated film that may go down as one of the best of all-time! Brilliant animation, smart writing, fantastic characters, humor, heart, great voice acting, and wonderful exploration of those all-important themes. It picks the prejudices it wants to deal with and mostly sticks to those, while also undermining those same messages by reducing many others to those same kinds of stereotyping (rednecks, Italian mafioso, etc) and there doesn't seem to be any indication this is intentional or meant as subversiveness.

Maybe it doesn't matter that much, this movie isn't meant to be a deep and thorough undertaking but it still hurts the film when its messages are blatantly obvious and screamed in your face and then slyly ignored when there's plot needed and a joke to be had.

The rest of it is pretty standard modern animated pop-culturally aware farce.
