The first movie is good, but this is the best of the three. Good story, good acting and some neat special affects set this movie apart. I missed this and the third so I just got into them... just finished Wolverine. The Xmen films are some of the best action films I've ever seen. Highly highly highly highly glysglysglysglskldskl;l; recommend them!!!!!

This was an interesting sequel to the first film and no doubt that it had much more story to it considering the first one was merely a development on the characters. This gave us some more action combined with better character development, possibly better story development, but what I must mention is that X2 is subjectively different from its predecessor because this isn't the beginning. The first one was good because it gave us what we needed to begin with and this showed a good combination of storyline along with character development, while this one added more characters while adding a bit more action over storyline, plus it did go a little downhill in the middle. Despite that, I did enjoy this one, because there was more character development and a few more thrills and as my favourite character is Wolverine, it was great to hear more about him but without neglecting the rest of them.… Expand

Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) returns to Xavier's school after searching for clues as to where he came from, and how he received his indestructible abilities, Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is reluctant to delve deeper into Wolverines past, but also has other matters to attend to. After an attack on the White House, carried out by a mutant, there is continuing pressure once again to go so far as to detain mutants.
But not forgetting minor characters from the first, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) has a much more pivotal and expanded role in X2, she is still quite shaken from the events of the first film to the point where she is unable to concentrate on her powers, she truly is powerful, but unable to harness it.
With Magneto (Ian McKellan) in plastic solitary confinement, the master of metal continues to stand for what he truly believes in, his brotherhood of mutants, of how they are the next stage of evolution.
The story moves at a quick and action packed pace, as someone emerges from Wolverines past that he doesn't fully understand. He must search for answers, but a massive turn of events may soon change that.
The characters are on top form throughout this film, and it is remarkable to see so many exciting personalities all having their time to shine in 120 mins. Hugh Jackman continues to bring out the ruthless yet often caring Wolverine, also returning is Anna Paquin as Rogue, and also Iceman played in a bigger capacity from Shawn Ashmore.
This film continues to appear on many lists as one of the best superhero films, and for good reason. It has a mixture of interesting prospects, a riveting story, groundbreaking special effects and a cast that are simply too intriguing to ignore. Ian McKellan in particular delivers a thrilling performance as the anti-hero Magneto, along with Mystique and even a few familiar faces, they all must band together to save themselves from a much more mysterious foe, one who of course might just have more knowledge on the X-Men, and their capabilities, than they do themselves.… Expand

Darker and stronger, the film manages to build a frame and mounted and space for your entire cast shine, and the action scenes are actually better than its predecessor, which trona the film one of the best films of superheroes ever made.

How could I have possibly missed this movie?!? This is one of the best superhero movies I’ve watched. This is one of the best superhero movies I’ve watched. It’s emotional, it has great dialogue, it has some of the best acting in the franchise (yes, including the First Class trilogy and Wolverine trilogy), and it really hit on a lot of themes.

This is what I would reference as an X-Men movie, through and through. They stood together as a team, really pushed the themes of X-Men (equality, being different, the dangers and in-fighting of mutants, etc.), and it showed the dark and good parts of humanity. They characterized almost every character of the cast, and dang the choreography of the fights was epic. Mad props to the Wolverine vs. Yuriko. It was awesome and pretty gruesome for PG-13.

The casting was also excellent. Special props to Hugh Jackman once again, and Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. Really stole the show, and was probably my favorite character other than Wolverine in this movie. The cinematography was also stellar, especially the transitions with the hallucination person.

What knocks this movie? The very end of this movie… it really didn’t make any sense. There’s also a few moments where suspension of disbelief is a thing, and this movie tends to focus more on Wolverine way more than the rest of the X-Men. Would still recommend this movie regardless. Buy it on Blu-Ray if possible.

X2 is the X-Men movie that I would have absolutely loved to watch if I was a fan of the X-Men franchise as a kids. Sadly I became a fan of the series only in the recent years. This movie has all the characters from the cartoon series, and itsX2 is the X-Men movie that I would have absolutely loved to watch if I was a fan of the X-Men franchise as a kids. Sadly I became a fan of the series only in the recent years. This movie has all the characters from the cartoon series, and its story is even better than the prequel. Nightcrawler was my favourite character, and here he is. I was a little disappointed he wasn't there in the first movie, but he is here now. And that makes me like it already.

The movie opens with Nightcrawler fighting an entire team of security guards at the White House. It is one of the best choreographed fight scenes from any Marvel movie at that point, and one of my favourite after the warehouse fight scene from Batman v Superman. When he bursts into the room I was actually cheering for him. After that the scene shifts to the mutants who are showing visitors a museum on dinosaurs. Normally I don't like to watch those "teenagers get into a fight cliché scenes, but this one is an exception, especially the way everyone turns into a mannequin when they have to escape before anyone learns they are mutants.

Magneto's entrance was also awesome. The idea of Mystique just using a little bit of metal in a man's food could help Magneto walk all the way out of the prison was pretty creative. And then the mutants escaping from their plane and Magneto stopping them just before they hit the ground; it really made me like Magneto a lot. I actually liked Magneto in the first movie also because he had been on the receiving end of a lot of oppression and all of this was just his rage coming out, but here he absolutely nailed it.

Now of course I can't be going about telling all the things that happen in this movie, since there are a lot of storylines going on, and in spite of that it never feels complicated. The acting, costumes, CGI, music - everything has been done to perfection. The ending is also one of my favourites from all X-Men movies. I always consider this to be "the" X-Men movie, since it is so faithful to its source material and yet doesn't feel unrealistic. Everyone (except Wolverine of course) looks exactly like their comic counterpart. You can pause on any scene and expect it to be a panel from a comic. It's kinda sad that X-Men movies, for that matter any comic book movie franchise, no longer follows the source material. It's kinda fun to watch this movie because of that very reason. I can see myself watching this movie many times again in the future because it's so good, and that's actually saying something because I usually don't watch the same movie twice unless it's coming on TV and I have nothing better to do, or if it's as good as this and I have to show it to someone.… Expand

X2 is the very definition of sequels surpassing their predecessors. Every single aspect of the film improves on the foundations laid by X-Men three years prior. The dialogue is crisp and clever, the story is tight and involving, and everyX2 is the very definition of sequels surpassing their predecessors. The dialogue is crisp and clever, the story is tight and involving, and every single character is well-developed and believable. The effects and action scenes too are vastly improved, making what we saw in the previous film look like a child's puppet show. I'd go as far as to say that the opening sequence with Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) fighting his way though the White House is among the greatest action scenes ever committed to film. The effects are not only state-of-the art, but are unlike anything seen before. The scene is truly pulse-racing and extremely creative, with John Ottman's epic score maintaining momentum and holding the whole thing together. The rest of the film is an interesting take on the road-trip movie, with the X-Men narrowly escaping an attack on their mansion base by the vengeful and xenophobic Colonel Stryker (Brian Cox) and attempting to regroup to rescue the kidnapped Professor X (Patrick Stewart). It's a long movie but never drags, the entire cast keep you invested in the story throughout, with Jackman, McKellen, Paquin and Romijn carrying over their stellar performances from the previous film and newcomers Cox and Cumming also impressing. As it's a near-perfect superhero move, which set up such a promising sequel with Singer at the helm, it is indeed tragic that said sequel turned out to be Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand… Expand

I have never read the comics so I don't know how it compares to those but the characters behaved how I expected from watching the cartoons as a kid and also from how my friends described them from the comics and how they looked from the comics my friends showed me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being a new fan of the X-Men film series, I had high expectations about this second installment of the series and it did not disappoint.

I liked how the movie immediately follows-up after the events of the first movie.

The plot was great from start to finish. The character development is huge in this one. We get to see more of Wolverine's past, we get to see Phoenix doing a heroic sacrifice etc. I also like the new characters to this movie especially Nightcrawler which is played by Alan Cumming, who did a good job performing this highlight character. It sucks that this is his only appearance.

I also liked how the movie still focus Magneto as a villain at the end. And of course, I am so glad that Magneto is still the antagonist because William Stryker, the main antagonist before Magneto took his place, was unlikable from the very beginning. He is the Dolores Umbridge of the X-Men series in my opinion.

The direction from Bryan Singer is also great. I think he directed better in this sequel.

One minor drawback is that while I do enjoy this movie, the previous movie is a lot more enjoyable but it's not a bad thing I guess.

Overall, this X-Men sequel is a worthy sequel. Enough said.… Expand

Bryan Singer directs a more solid, and intense chapter for our mutant heroes, and it's an enormous improvement of the first movie, which I thought was absolutely fantastic.

The movie opens with what could be the best opening for any movie, and that involves the White House and a mutant named Kurt Wagner aka "Nightcrawler" (Alan Cumming) attempting to assassinate the U.S. President in a fast-paced, intense, and sometimes scary scene which we see Nightcrawler teleport away from the guards. This is a difficult scene to do well, and Singer manages to keep everything in focus.

We see Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) appear at the lake where he became metal and where his memory of his origins may have been erased, but he cannot seem to find any answers. The group of mutants at Charles Xavier's (Patrick Stewart) school return, and it seems that Jean (Famke Janssen) is having trouble controlling her telepathic powers. This is a tease to her "Phoenix saga", and Cyclops (James Marsden) is concerned and tries not to make her worry.

Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) and Rogue (Anna Paquin) also return, and it seems that Rogue's powers of uncontrollably harming an individual seem to stall their relationship as they cannot express physical love for one another.

Magneto (Ian McKellen) is still in prison since the events of 'X-Men' (2000) and he is visited by a Colonel William Stryker (Brian Cox), who wants him to give information where Charles' Cerebro is, and plots to use it against all the mutants and wipe them out. Colonel Stryker also plans to kidnap Xavier in order for him to use Cerebro and convince him to do so, but he runs into Wolverine along his journey, and Wolverine thinks that Stryker is a link to his forgotten past.

The action scenes in this movie are better than ever, particularly the Nightcrawler scene at the White House, the raid scene in the X-Mansion with Wolverine maniacally killing Stryker's guards left, right and center. There is also a scene in which Wolverine fights another mutant with very similar powers to his.

Just like stated above, this is a darker sequel, and more character driven as we get some time developed to Iceman, in a very well done scene where he explains about his mutant abilities that he was born with. The movie is also half an hour longer than its predecessor, and it still moves at a fast pace, with more characters, more violence, more action and a darker tone...'X2: X-Men United' is one of the best comic book sequels out there.… Expand

When it could focus on insight and enlightenment, it chooses to instead focus on self-acceptance character-wise, and sci-fi action sequences plot wise. The film only hints at what it could be throughout its entire duration.

There are some cool new characters this time around like Nightcrawler. So why is this film better than the first? Well the first film needed lots of time to set up the characters but since the sequel doesn’t need to do that and it can just get right to the story. **** happens in this film and it is engaging and paced well much better than the first one. The film also has the alliance of convenience cliché, which I like. There is also a lot more action this time around and while it isn’t amazing or anything it is definitely a step above what we saw in the last X-Men film. If you liked the first film you’ll probably enjoy the second one a little bit more.… Expand

X2 picks up the thread exactly where its predecessor left off. There's not even really a new threat here. Rather we're just seeing the next natural evolution of the conflict they were already involved in. This quality of telling one ongoing story, whereas its peers from Marvel and DC treat each successive release as an entirely new adventure, is one of the aspects that make the early entries in this series stand out from the pack.

Another is how the real enemy these heroes fight against isn't the supervillain Magneto's "Brotherhood" or even the crazed military colonel trying to weaponize and annihilate them. It's the ignorance, fear, and close-minded nature of the world they live in. It's easy to draw parallels between the mutant's plight and that of real life issues like racism and homophobia. The interesting thing about this property is that its approach to exploring these issues has always shown the evils prevalent on BOTH sides of discrimination. Obviously the humans are at fault for their treatment of a people they don't understand, but the X-Men franchise also condemns those who would seek to meet intolerance with an aggression that only reinforces negative stereotypes and puts further walls between us. The message these characters have tried to teach us over the years is that the only way we will all be able to achieve a sense of unity and harmony that transcends our differences is through understanding, patience, and education. A moral that makes the original comics and movies even more significant today in a time where so many are attempting to combat hatred with even more hatred.

Like any good sequel, X2 dives deeper into its world and characters. Which is compelling and interesting from a narrative standpoint, but all of this extra storytelling makes for a less exciting watch overall. There are essentially three different plot threads going on. The main one is great, but the other two leave a bit to be desired. We get to learn more about Wolverine's origin, but none of that ever feels terribly substantial and kind of ends up going nowhere. We also get some obligatory sequel setup centered around Jean Grey that will likely leave anyone not familiar with the source material wondering what the heck all that nonsense was about once the credits roll.

Of all the X-Men movies this might be the one that nails the whole team dynamic the best. Hugh Jackman still basically carries all of the action sequences, but the rest of the time his role in the story feels no larger than that of his peers. This is the first time I've actually found myself somewhat overlooking Wolverine in one of these films because of how many impactful moments were written for the other characters.

X2 proves to still be a solid blockbuster after all this time and may even be more relevant than ever due to its themes and underlying subtext. It definitely suffers from being a definitive middle chapter (meaning nothing of real consequence actually happens) and is perhaps not as action-packed as its predecessor overall. Yet, it still does a lot that modern superhero flicks could stand to learn from, and because of that held up better upon this revisitation than most of the MCU and DCEU catalogue will be able to when the same amount of time passes on them.

The CGI is flawless, and combined with a great opening scene and many entreating events, is this second X-Men film greater than the first. The soundtrack is another aspect of the film that’s great, it’s much more epic. The villains and the main cast are all awesome, so there’s no doubt that this film is spectacular.

This movie is good, if not great, and it is certainly the best of the original trilogy of X-Men. It's best characters are probably Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, and the always entertaining Wolverine. I wish Nightcrawler was used more, and I thought he was about as awesome as Quicksilver was in Days of Future Past. Also, Cyclops wasn't used near as much as he needed to be. The X-Men series has always had a problem with not using the coolest characters correctly, and this one resorts to using Storm too much as well, but it doesn't make that mistake as much as Last Stand does. Other than that, there's really not too much negative about this movie. It just takes everything established in the first one and expands on it. Although I still don't get how that highly advanced metal detector that scanned everything on and in the human body didn't pick up all that iron in the guards bloodstream, oh well.… Expand

It's just that whereas the first X-Men film did feel like the beginning of a franchise that was yet to properly find its feet, it was found with X2. X2 isn't perfect either but still a very good film that is bigger and darker than the first and all the better for it. Again X2 is very well-made, with the dark visual style still maintained yet with a slightly grander look. The photography is beautiful and atmospheric, and the special effects are better here too, they were good in the first that they're slicker, bolder and eye-popping in the way that the first film didn't quite but almost did achieve. Whilst Michael Kamen's score in the first was fine, John Ottman's score here is an improvement being more in tune with the atmosphere and what's happening in the story.

The script is even sharper here and with more depth, the humour and comic one-liners are witty and genuinely funny, they are not cheesy or out-of-place nor are they too much. There is a melancholic tone too that is dark and quite poignant and the romantic elements are sweet but never too soap-opera-ish. The story is where the darker and bigger terms most apply, apart from a couple of parts that could have slowed down and explained themselves more you are glued to your seat almost the entire time and emotionally connect with scenes and characters too. The assault on the White House sequence is exciting and a brilliant way to start the film, and it is true that the climax here puts the climax of the first in the shade, it's not contrived in the slightest and you are biting your nails. X2 does a great job mostly with the characters, where they are more complex and relatable.

Although once again Storm and Cyclops are underdeveloped, otherwise Wolverine is a gritty and identifiable anti-hero, and of the other characters Nightcrawler was most effective. Though once again credit is due for making Magneto much more than a stereotypical villain. X2 is very well played by the cast, with the standouts being Hugh Jackman's charismatic Wolverine, Ian McKellen's menacing Magneto with shades of melancholy, Alan Cumming's camp yet affecting Nightcrawler and Brian Cox who plays Stryker with relish without falling into cliché territory. Also good are Rebecca Romijin-Stamos who continues to be sexy and icy, and her transformation sequences are among the visual highlights of the film and Patrick Stewart still is cool and fun though his screen time should have been longer.

Only three cast members don't quite work, and they were James Marsden who's even stiffer than he was in the first(not helped by his character not been used as well as he could have been), Halle Berry who looks bored and Shawn Ashmore does look awkward at times. Other than a couple of rushed, under-explained parts, a couple of characters given short shrift and a couple of performances that didn't quite make the grade the film is a touch overlength, but the film on the whole is very good and lots of fun in its own right. What looks like a terrorist act is eventually revealed as a broader conspiracy to crack down on mutant freedoms, a plot spearheaded by hateful general Brian Cox, who uses the attack as an excuse to go after the residents of the school run by Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). With their expansive casts, tangled plotlines, and overheated passions, the X-Men comic books have always been as much about soap operatics as laser beams. So far, the film series has not just understood that notion, but run with it. X-Men, the first film made from Stan Lee's Marvel comic, grossed $300 million in 2000, but Cumpston felt shortchanged: "Remember how the first film had all that story (= for gays) in the first part, and you were like, 'How 'bout some ass-kicking already?' and then finally they got to it? Not this one. It's like, OK, there's the credits, and now here's the ass-kicking, and it starts and doesn't stop and you're all like, 'Pants, meet **** "

Props to Cumpston for wittily epitomizing the devalued state of film criticism. Who cares if X2 has a director, a writer or a thought in its head, as long as this $120 million epic turns loose mutants to metaphorically bruise our nether regions.

That it does. Everyone is pumped up and pissed off, starting with director Bryan Singer, who reportedly kicked chairs and screamed at the crew. His mood fits the movie. Hugh Jackman is again in fierce, lupine form as Wolverine, the mutant with metal claws. Pushing the bounds of PG-13 intensity, Wolvie stabs his spikes into Deathstrike (the dazzling Kelly Hu), whose talons are twice the size of his. The buzz is right: X2 is bigger, badder and better than X1.

It's also half an hour longer, a mixed blessing that allows for (yikes!) character development. The two mutant camps — one led by Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who wants mutants and humans to co-exist, the other led by Magneto (Ian McKellen), who preaches mutant supremacy — unite against Stryker (a terrific Brian Cox), a military psycho with a genocidal rage against mutants and their special gifts.

It doesn't help the X-Men's cause when a mutant tries to kill the president in the opening scene. We hear a sound — bampf! — and there stands Nightcrawler (zesty scene-stealer Alan Cumming), a blue-skinned, yellow-eyed, fork-tailed demon who teleports past security, damn near stabs the prez and behaves unlike the gentle soul he is, a German acrobat who enjoys deep religious dish with Storm (Halle Berry, still struggling with an underwritten role). It's clear that the good guys are being mind-controlled.

Romance also trips up the X-Men. Wolverine is losing telepathic Dr. Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) to laser-eyed Cyclops (James Marsden). On the junior X team, pity poor Iceman (Shawn Ashmore). His itch for Rogue (Anna Paquin, sporting gray streaks) requires safe scratching, since a mere touch from her can floor a guy. "We love what you've done with your hair," says Magneto, lobbing the line at Rogue like a **** Cupid. Fun stuff.

Hot stuff is Rebecca Romijn-Stamos as Mystique, a naked vision in blue when she's not shape-shifting to get it on with Wolvie as Jean, as Storm and as herself. Neat trick.

What's un-neat is how Singer and screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris overload the film with new Xers. Pyro (Aaron Stanford) is viably flashy, but do we need the steel guy, the screamer, the girl who passes through walls and the kid with the forked tongue? By expanding the X-Men franchise, Singer dilutes the film at hand. As for the death of one major character, it's less an organic shock than an excuse to get soppy and philosophical.

But why rip Singer for defying the rules of ass kicking. If only he defied them more. X2 is a summer firecracker. It's also a tribute to outcasts — teens, gays, minorities, even Dixie Chicks. It's not without thought or feeling, except when its mind gets bent by the gods of box office. Then it's craven and empty. Success, meet compromise.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "X2: X-Men United" is an ideal sequel which improves on the foundations set by it's predecessor and expands on the lore. The stakes are raised as Colonel Striker wishes to use Xavier's machine to unleash genocide on mutant kind. With this common threat the brotherhood and the X-Men need to put aside their differences in order to fight a common menace. The theme of prejudice is dealt with much more in this film than in the previous film as the anti-mutant hostilities start to intensify. The most nuanced scene which illustrates this was the scene when Ice-Man was talking to his parents about him being a mutant to which his mom asked "Have you ever tried not being a mutant". This illustrates the homosexuality allegory that the comics have have dived into. Wolverine's past is revlead more and he starts to face his supposed superior of the weapon x program in Lady Death- Strike. He even has a nice end to his character arc as he decides to fight against his vengeful nature and decided to Spare Striker. Night Crawler makes his first theatrical appearance played by Alan Cumming. Cumming perfectly captures the spiritual conflict within him as he wants t be a good christian but looks like a demon on the outside. Magneto is more sinister in this film as he tricks the machine to kill all humans instead of mutants which does make fit the character but it feels like a last-minute conflict though. The films entire ending actually felt rushed as it laid a sequel bait feeling which will lead to obvious cliffhangers. Rushed ending aside it is a film that is worth a watch that will satisfy the hardcore fans and average movie- watchers.… Expand

Bryan Singer's X2: X-Men United is one of the best film sequels of all time. This film upend the stakes and introduced another great villain, William Stryker. X2: X-Men United is a big step up from the first film. The action is better, the pacing is better, and Wolverine is given even more depth.

However, X2 still has some bland side-characters, and the stakes never feel THAT high.

I am not very used to films that have characters from the comic book universe as their theme, but the quality and impact that some have had makes them a mandatory visit. So, even without knowing much about the characters or their fictionalI am not very used to films that have characters from the comic book universe as their theme, but the quality and impact that some have had makes them a mandatory visit. So, even without knowing much about the characters or their fictional stories, I decided to watch the X-Men franchise films. This decision was followed by some reading about the characters and the films. I tried to follow more or less the chronological sequence of events starting with the prequels and continuing, in order to better understand what I was seeing. So this film, which was the second in the franchise, was the fourth film I saw.

In this film, the American president is attacked by a mutant. In response, he authorizes William Stryker to make efforts to control and identify mutants, which are now considered a threat to national security. With Magneto trapped in a plastic prison and at the mercy of the army, Xavier's mansion is attacked and prisoners are taken. With a new danger in common, the remaining X-Men are forced to join forces with Magneto, who still has his own agenda.

This was the second film in the franchise and gives a logical continuation to the story started in the first film. It is an improvement as the story is denser, darker and with space for mutants that were kept in the background in the first film, as is the case of Storm, who appears more and has more intervention in the story now. Dialogues are good and has some space for well-placed comic lines and also some romance (highlighting Rogue's flirtations and the Cyclops-Jean-Wolverine love triangle). Personally, I felt that this film puts more characters in interaction, which gives more relevance to their dialogues and the way they relate to each other, revealing more of each one's personality. This is most evident with Rogue, Iceman, Pyro and Nightcrawler, which is the most notable addition to the movie's character list.

The cast is inherited from the previous film and is made up of proven actors. This is the case of Hugh Jackman, who continued his excellent work as Wolverine, or Sir Ian McKellen, who steals the spotlight when he appears, giving Magneto a threatening perversity and a cynicism full of elegance and depth. Patrick Stewart, Anna Paquin, Rebecca Romijn and Famke Janssen continue to shine in their respective roles, in such a way that they seem tailor-made for these actors. Among the newcomers, I would highlight Alan Cumming, extremely effective as Nightcrawler, and Brian Cox, who made a good villain. On the negative side, I would continue to mention James Marsden's one-dimensional and tasteless performance, and also Halle Berry, who was unable to take advantage of the extra screen time given to her character, limiting herself to continuing the bland performance of the first film, where her was character frankly secondary. She should have invested more in the character or demanded better material from the screenwriter.

In addition to these merits, the film has excellent production values that should be highlighted. It is a Marvel film and there are huge millions of dollars involved, which is quite evident from the beginning. Visually its a show in itself, with great visual effects and the best CGI that money could buy. The opening sequence, with the attack on the President, immediately captures our attention for the rest that follows. The scenes and action sequences are great and the climax is a great action sequence, even more tense and interesting than the one we saw in the first film. As in the first film, it has excellent luxurious and detailed sets and costumes. Cinematography is excellent and makes good use of color and shadow to make the film denser, darker and tenser. The editing was also well accomplished, which results in a perfect rhythm, in which there are no dead moments. I think its fair to also greet the makeup department and the soundtrack by John Ottman, which is quite somber and in concordance with the atmosphere of the film.… Expand

In most of the super hero trilogies, second film has the most possibility. There are some similarities of first films that are the best. They have good setting, or basic idea. That includes most of the super hero films because the producer doesn't have to spend time on the start of the hero or the ending of the trilogy. That's the cases of Spider Man, The Dark Knight, and the Winter Soldier. Of course in X-Men Series, that was the case. This film will give you amazing experience with many thoughts as well as good actions. Professor X and Magneto still has the force that they had before, and Wolverine is still cool. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have rarely witnessed such a disappointing film. X2: X-Men United suffers from exactly the same flaws as the first opus but is actually worst. The first part is attractive, highlights each character and develops interesting underlying plots that bring the protagonists closer together. Fortunately, the film manages to mix a special interest in this stalker Wolverine, but also leaves more room for other interesting protagonists like Magneto. Nevertheless, Wolverines is still the big star of this X-Men film (and not a 'Wolverine/Logan' film). However, the entire second part of the film sees the script and the rhythm collapse, as if the expectations of the directors and scriptwriters were too high for this feature film that already lasts more than two full hours!

During this famous second part, all the parallel stories end up coming together to form a vile soup of pretentiousness, easy and effortless lines, and fights that are either useless or with far too predictable outcomes. The suspense rises crescendo but is absolutely useless because anyone can predict the end of a similar Marvel movie, without even knowing its universe. The last forty minutes of 'X2: X-Men United' are really painful to experience and witness. Everything becomes laughable, predictable and circular. We have the impression that the film lacks the time to tackle the subjects it would like to but paradoxically seems to last for hours and hours.

The film is sprinkled with (very) original ideas but sadly ends up falling apart. The idea of making a character die: great, but thanks to the end scene, it's a no! The movie already starts by featuring characters who had been left in a very bad state at the end of the first opus... But if you can't manage to get rid of some stupid mascots, nothing makes sense anymore! Some of the jokes are funny, but most of them are really corny and too much in the course of the story. The whole romance love triangle between Wolverine, Jean Grey and Cyclop is horrible, useless and bland. It brings no depth to the film, only the opposite.

Some of the protagonists do not fare very well in their staging: Cyclop, Bobby, Pyro, Lady Deathstrike and Mystique are unfortunately part of it. Speaking of Mystique, we can warmly thank her because she quickly becomes the only person able to move the script forward thanks to her immeasurable power. Nightcrawler however remains the greatest positive surprise of the movie.

Some of the special effects are very nazy, especially those related to Pyro. Let's say that I forgive them in view of the year of release of the film (2003).… Expand

Very good second part. I like the X-Men universe better and better. Part 1 was pretty nice but part 2 goes a step further.

Strong sequel.

I didn't quite enjoy 'X2' as much as 'X-Men', though not by much in truth. This follow-up film is still something I'd class as entertaining. Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) again impresses, though those behind him are - though allStrong sequel.

Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) again impresses, though those behind him are - though all good - a little meh in my opinion; especially newcomer Brian Cox (Stryker), who underwhelmed me.

All in all, it's a film that is totally worth watching and is a sequel that is worth its salt.

X2: X-Men United takes all of the elements that worked in the original and both expands and improves upon it to make a superhero sequel almost as strong as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2, or Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight.

The first good X-Men movie, like how Charles gets taken so the team has to be more independent. Where in the first movie it just felt like they were just waiting around till the story came to them.

x2. The war begins. An excellent continuation of the radioactive people. The story is more serious, and the characters themselves have become more responsible. Also added even more epic moments and unexpected turns of events.

After almost 20 years X2 still holds up, although some visual effects are dated. It has a stellar cast and Ian McKellen as Magneto is just metal.
