I could not help but be fascinated with this movie. Three hours plus but so spellbinding it didn't seem like it.
A beautiful film, amazingly directed.

With a cast of the best Turkish actors at this moment, Nuri Bilge Ceylan made something beautiful here and it's gonna stay with me for a very long time.

Another boring communist fairy tale. It verges on venturing into some interesting subjects, but never really does, and the pace is monumentally slow. The only upside is you get a peek into modern day Turkey. For all it's worth

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To enjoy "Winter Sleep," it will help to have a high tolerance for films in which people talk endlessly about their ideas, grudges, disappointments and uncertainties. I tend to like that sort of thing, so I enjoyed it. Like the Michael Douglas character in "Wonder Boys" and the soulful Italian lead in "The Great Beauty," the main character is grappling with some mid/late life struggles. Unfortunately, he lacks the ability to truly connect with people that seems to save the guys in those other two films. His conflicted conversations with the women in his life are painful ... and though it goes on more than three hours, I would have loved maybe five more minutes that hinted at how ANY of these lives might turn out! The bleakly beautiful scenery is a haunting character in its own right, and if you didn't have to follow the subtitles, listening to the Turkish language is fascinating, as well. Expand

Winter Sleep is literally a sleep in the winter. Don't make this movie fool you, that's not that Winter Sleep's about. It's way, and I mean a lot, more than that.

Immense, intimate and incisive and very spoken, the film will be confined in art tones beyond the conventional cinema, thanks to its enormous duration but the rewards of its story arrive if you deepen enough .

This movie feels like you're peeking into the lives of these characters, and it can be very awkward.

The story is, basically, a conflict between a landlord and a tenant. The main landlord is kind of an **** He's snobbish and condescending, but the tenant isn't the most likeable either.

These characters feel like people. Flawed and conflicted. Their story is more fascinating to watch that it would seem at first.

The film is very long and very slow, but instead of being boring, it's relaxing, despite how unrelaxed the characters may be (they spend a lot of the time arguing). It's also really tense. Tense and relaxing. Oddly nostalgic.

If I were to compare it to a more recent movie, that would be Hu Bo's An Elephant Sitting Still.
