Anyone in need of reassurance of the Innate goodness of people should probably avoid this film, although it's a lot less caustic than Solondz's other movies. For everyone else it's thoroughly recommended.

And five years after his last film, he has made a comeback with Wiener-Dog. It is composed of four different stories connected by one dog and stars Ellen Burstyn, Greta Gerwig, Keaton Nigel Cooke and Danny DeVito.

The impressive style is established gorgeously which is incorporated with nice musical score and uplifting cinematography. The scenes are also filled with such realism and feels like a true-to-life situation of everyday living. This film does a good work in not being afraid to be uncanny nevertheless of a simple premise. Although some viewers might think this is an uninteresting and weird dramedy, you've got to understand the concept of it in order to figure out what message it is trying to evoke.

VERDICT: Wiener-Dog is a passionate comeback for Solondz, who masterfully crafts a peculiar yet realistic black comedy.

Weiner Dog

Solondz has a dodgy cruise party, he is inviting us to. It is fun, sure. But it is excruciatingly poignant that does take a toll on us. The writer and director, Todd Solondz has got tricks for smoothness in buckets. You can't deny that. But sliding over with such flamboyancy, how far can you go where style is taking over the substance. The film cares more about the punchline than the way it reaches to that one-liner. It frankly isn't worth to put yourself with enormous effort through this, just to hear that familiar chuckle. The film's major theme deal with transitioning yourself from one place to another.

And just like the dog does, we get to meet plenty of eccentric characters who are to the core, till their final beat, humane. That is what you should take away from the film, never for a second does the urge for being humorous compromises the nature of the characters. But other than that, you might as well go through other collection of his films. Split, into four parts, Julie Deply's performance is the only hope to survive the first act, just as Greta Gerwig's hopeless passionate character gives a certain weight in that act. So is the similar case with its last act.

But the real meat lies in Danny Devito's, closest to the premise, chapter where both performance and content offers you the meal promised in the endorsement. His confessional scene in a small cabin is some of the finest performance he has pulled off, with such sincerity he walks over that fine line of drama and comedy. Something that Wiener Dog thought it could achieve, maybe this is not its day. P.S. all the interviews are the best part, from a director bragging to an amateur giving his- that looked like- first interview.

Terrific movie and unusually for for Solondz quite touching in places.

If you are an overly sentimental dog lover I would urge caution, otherwise highly recommended.

There's not much I can add to the other positive reviews really. If like me, you enjoy movies with a bit of substance and an offbeat sense of humor then this might be right up your street.

"Wiener-Dog" may be a little too off-kilter for some, and way too rough in its landing for most, but - again - a worthy effort in showcasing Solondz's unique brand of humor. Not really my kind of film, but for all you dark humor die-hards out there, it's definitely worth a look. Expand

I haven't seen this..don't know if I will. BUT at least it doesn't have Jesse Eisenberg or Paul Dano in it. I think that's the new Hollywood rule: it must have either Eisenberg or Dano.

ThereLet me start by saying we're going on our 2nd doxie and this film captures NONE of the charm or personality of the breed (the one in the movie was over-trained and practically comatose). By the same token, this dark comedy is only dark. There are NO funny moments (with the possible exception of a musical "intermission"). The narrative follows the unhappy lives of 4 people, including Danny DeVito & Ellen Burstyn. Only the 1st story even features the dog …in the other 3, it's just an ornament. Director Todd Solondz nailed this type of somewhat sick humor in "Happiness," but this time, the plights of the people aren't interesting and the writing is flat. The final scene of the dog getting run over is especially disturbing and not necessary. Expand

The characters for the most part were very unlikeable people with a couple of exceptions. The most likeable characters in the movie other than the little boy in the first scene were the wiener dogs themselves who were handsome, healthy looking and well behaved dogs. The star dog was played by two or more dogs. The story was of a wiener dog who went from one dysfunctional and life threatening situation to the next. The transition from one situation to the next was less than clear. What I considered sick and depraved in the movie to others may have been considered funny but trust me it was not. Seeing sweet dogs at risk and worse to me was not entertainment. Save your money, your time and your sense of what is healthy and good entertainment and pass on this movie. It was a truly want your money back experience. Expand

Solondz should have been substituted for the wiener dog in the last scene. I agree with the woman I overheard on our way out of the theater, "I want my afternoon back!"

A dog's lifetime journey with the different owners.

I am an animal lover, but there's nothing bad I found on it. It was just a film and they did not even harm the dogs that used for, but those, particularly final scene was a graphic. Anyway, one thing is for sure that this is not for softhearted people. Because some of the contents were unpleasant to watch, but in the real world these things happen everyday, everywhere and nobody doing nothing to stop that. So you can't just blame this film for that to portraying the facts. In a recent film, someone was attacked by a bear and later it was killed, but this is not that kind of bad impression giving film for the animal lovers.

I haven't seen the 'Welcome to the Dollhouse', but it is a spin-off of that. Written and directed by a same filmmaker. A comedy drama with multiple layers, but all of them follows a single dog, the journey what a dog makes in his lifetime like with the different owners how its fate hangs. So you aren't going to enjoy all the tale, I particularly liked first one and so do the many others. The second half was not up to its counterpart. It started off well and if it had ended the same way, it would have been considered a good one. But it lost the track during the middle, so now it is an average, maybe just below that.

Don't think it is a dog film like those you loved. The dog is the part of the film, but its contributions were rare. It is just a film and enjoy it as one, other than that it is useless to complain on the depiction. It is R rated, and that tells it might not suitable for families. But it carried a very good message on how the dogs were treated in the different classes, in the different society of people and family. For that alone, it is worth a watch, but still lacks appealness. So I won't suggest it, but it is not bad either like many people claiming. All I would say is choose it carefully, don't believe what some were whining about.
