Fey is exceptional, and the performances are fantastic. The script is excellent, and the soundtrack is awesome. The pacing could have been a little faster, but it doesn't drag, and the cinematography is solid. The storyline is engaging and offers us a more nuanced commentary on the conflict in Afghanistan than other recent films, whilst avoiding cliches and sentimental 'Murica tropes, instead exploring a realistic and unabashed commentary on being a female correspondent in an exceptionallly hostile setting. Well worth your time. 8.77/10 Expand

Based on a book written by Kim Baker about her adventures as a totally green rookie war correspondent when she left home for Afghanistan in 2003. Her first night in country as she lays her head on a strange pillow in a strange land, you can see she is thinking, "What the hell am I doing here?" With an excellent supporting cast, our fearless correspondent becomes more confident as she learns the ropes and her way around a culture so different from her own. It is not supposed to be a comedy, but there is lots of humor in this movie. We laughed out loud often. It was very enjoyable and entertaining. Expand

One of the smartest films of the year. It spells out "Quagmire." It's also the only film in which endorphins and the hippocampus are linked to the British19thC occupation of Aphganistan.

It starter gags are just too immature. The strength of the movie doesn't come in until it tones down the humor and begins to focus on the relationships and growth of Tina Fey's character.

It's your standard tale about a person who finally does something new and crazy in their life and ends up finding out who they are along the way. As a result it is predictable. However the movie has a fantastic cast lead by Tina Fey, who gives an excellent performance. Of course it also helps that the setting allows for interesting and dangerous situations to arise.

It's true that Afghanistan ends up being one of the movie's greatest strengths. I was surprised to find that for a comedy it isn't afraid to get gritty. There are violent and gory depictions of warfare I wasn't expecting. It really helps to add a tone of realism to the film. It's also allows them to touch on other compelling themes about the political climate and culture of the area.

Before I go any further I have to criticize the movie's soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, these are good songs. The problem is they are used completely in the wrong areas and often clash gaudily with the tone of the movie as well as the events they are being played over.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot goes to loud with it's humor in the beginning. It's not until it starts to get more subtle with it's jokes that the laughs start coming. Despite the familiarity of it's plot setup, the drama is still compelling thanks to a strong cast and a wonderful performance from Tina Fey. Of course it's setting is also a pretty strong point. It adds an extra serious edge with it's war angle.

For all of it's political hot topics on display, it's real themes and messages are centered around feminism. It's a nice display of the strength women possess. It might not be the funniest or most original movies out there, but it manages to add a few nice spins to the standard story setup it uses. All in all it's far fro perfect, but still offers quite a few reasons to give it a shot. It's opening stretch left me thinking I wasn't going to like it, but once it got going and found it's focus it pulled me into a surprisingly likable film. One carried by the talent of Tina Fey.

Journalism in the war zone, but very funny!

The first impression was the reaction to the title abbreviation, and then I thought I saw Jody Foster on the poster, but surprised to find Tina Fey in the trailer. It is a great war-drama, filled with lots of fun and hard to believe it is a biography. This should be the best film for these directors till date. Amazing cast, but Tina Fey totally cracked it. This is one of the best films of the 2016.

I have seen many Afghan war based films, but not quite fun as this one. It gives you a completely different take on the war torn Afghan. It was the story of an American journalist Kim, who was sent to their for the latest coverage. At first she struggles with the new place, then makes a few friends and finds comfortable despite security threat. The rest of the film reveals how her life, as well as career transforms with the experience of working in the dangerous environment.

Apart from starring in it, Tina Fey produced it and this is her best film in the recent years. The first half was wonderful, then during in the middle I felt it lost its track, but it came back strongly to end. This tale focused mainly on the living-style of the reports in the hostile place, besides their tough jobs. The battle scenes were minimised and highlighted the journalism. So don't expect it to be another 'A Thousands Times Good Night', it is refreshing though. It is a well worth, so don't miss it!

It was less of a comedy than I expected, but also a very interesting look at the state of the American presence in Afghanistan. It points out that perhaps more attention should be paid to what is happening there now.

Excellent movie. No it,s not trying to be another Mash. It's a unique movie with tremendous acting and relevance to the mess we find ourselves in today...

The third act turned this into a Sandra Bullock movie, but I was enjoying it very much until that point. No surprises, but seemed like a very accurate and necessary representation of a "forgotten war".

To write a comedy about a woman's self discovery in the middle of a war zone is risky business and on the whole they do a very good job.
