There was no reason for this movie to be made, its that simple.
The icing on the cake was how predictable it all was, especially the ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The flashback sequences take too long to get through while adding very little to the story. The third act reveal about who did or did not commit the murder at the center of the case make zero sense and the movie makes no attempt to rectify this for viewers. The screenplay is lazy, exemplified by the fact that the police search a house based on a legal doctrine that would not be established for two years which a cursory Google search would have fixed. All of that is not to mention that this is one of the most racist movies in recent history, not just in the subtext but overtly multiple times over. Expand

Couldn't even sit through the entirety of this film due to how unbelievably racist the portrayal of it's black characters was, one is literally named "Jumpin" and acts like Step n Fetch it. With that said, the court room drama/suspense here is lacking. This is much more of a love story than anything else, and one that is drawn out where it shouldn't be and rush where we could've used more material. I rolled my eyes as the film was winding down just to feel a bit fulfilled as the twist was revealed. Daisy Edgar-Jones does fantastic in this, loved her performance throughout. So, although I had issues with this film, more from a character aspect. It comes full circle by its end. Another example here how you can easily cut 45 minutes off the run time and have the same reaction. Besides let's face it, Hollywood will never be able to please the book lovers of the world with their renditions anyway, so how about at least pleasing movie goers looking for a story to engage in. The book is a terrific and immersive story that you just can’t put down, so expectations were very high. I was a little worried about this adaptation, and despite some surprisingly negative critic reviews I can safely say Where the Crawdads Sing is a great drama/romance/mystery you just have to see in the cinema.

Kya Clark (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a girl abandoned by her family and left alone to raise herself in the marshes in the Deep South. Shunned by society and completely neglected, Kya lives deep within the marshlands of North Carolina, alone and forced to fend for herself. She becomes engrossed with nature and everything life in the marsh has to offer. But when Chase Andrews (Harris Dickinson) is found dead under suspicious circumstances it isn’t long before the blame is placed on the marsh girl who must then try to prove her innocence in front of a jury of her peers.

Where the Crawdads Sing is an emotional and intense story with a strong central performance from Daisy Edgar-Jones. She was a brilliant choice for Kya the marsh girl. The two male leads by both Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson seem to be pretty much lifted straight from the book. The performances from everyone are brilliant with the standouts being Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jojo Regina as the young Kya. A story with this much emphasis on the characters needs to get the casting right, and Where the Crawdads Sing definitely achieved this. It elevates this film to have genuine characters with onscreen chemistry and plenty of time to flesh out the story.

The film itself is a little slow to begin and I feel the flashbacks were handled better in the book. The pacing also seemed to be an issue at times but as the film progresses you become more reeled into the story as you become more and more invested in Kya’s journey. The book brought the marsh to life and was written in such a way that you became fully immersed in it. The film also captured this very effectively and everything from the cinematography and atmosphere to the soundtrack perfectly creates the beautiful landscapes of the marsh. Where The Crawdads Sing almost has an old fashioned nostalgic feel to it. It’s sad, heart-breaking and will hit you in all the feels. It appears that director Olivia Newman took great care in bringing the book to cinemas which can’t be said for every book to movie adaptation.

Look we all know it’s very rare for the movie to be good as or better than the book and the bar was very high for Where the Crawdads Sing. For those wondering, yes the book is better but it’s still a great adaptation that will cater to both those who have and haven’t read it. And sure, some critics didn’t like it for whatever reason but the audience will love it, the screening I went to was packed and you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was completely captivated by the movie. So who are you going to listen to? Have I steered any of you wrong before? Highly recommended for everyone.

I felt like I had been transported to a world of magic and wonder and the added mystery of a small-town murder with bias toward the main character made for an excellent depiction of 1960s North Carolina and how prejudice can lead to tragedy and a shocking fate can be found even though innocently commenced. Kya's a peculiar girl, but truly hers is a tale of triumph and strength and finding a way to survive the world by finding sanctuary in a place free of discrimination where nature's laws rule and freedom means risking everything. It's a fabulous story and remarkably filmed with a lovely ending that left me thrilled and equally as stunned. Expand

Judging from the audience, this is def a "chick flick," telling the story of a lonely young woman and the 2 men who worshipped her. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays the "marsh girl," who grew up alone in the swamps of North Carolina in the 50s/60sJudging from the audience, this is def a "chick flick," telling the story of a lonely young woman and the 2 men who worshipped her. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays the "marsh girl," who grew up alone in the swamps of North Carolina in the 50s/60s after her parents deserted her. In the first timeline, we watch her early years, as she learns to cope with her unique situation and meets 2 handsome men. In the later sequences, she's accused of murdering one of them and must face trial. Even though the conflicts play out in the courtroom, the real juice is watching her with her devoted beaux. While her situation is certainly unique, the writing sometimes waxes poetic. Even though the drama never gets especially compelling, the performances make it worthwhile for anyone longing for a sweet romance. Considering this was set in Carolina, there are surprisingly few accurate Southern accents. Expand

Unfortunately, these risks aren't only to the film's detriment in a character-based manner, but in a borderline ethical one as well. That murkiness isn't helped by the true-to-life shadiness surrounding the author of the novel which this film is adapted from. Honestly, it says a lot when I leave a movie wishing it had stuck to the dull, derivative and by-the-numbers trajectory it set upon for its first hour and fifty-five minutes. At least with that I could've walked away disappointed and not downright insulted, which is what I'm feeling like now. Try as the performers and filmmakers might, it sounds to me like this project might've been a bit too much of a heavy lift to adapt to screen. Not for me. Expand

Sometimes it is best to just go in blind and hope for the best. Well my hopes past my expectations and this movie was a gem. I am not sure why the critics for the most part did not enjoy this movie. Daisy Edgar-Jones did an awesome job as "The Marsh Girl" Kya. I hope the people at the Academy give her at least a nomination for best actress because her work was terrific. Expand

Reviewers saying the girl is not scruffy enough are stupid. I'm sure she could work out how to take a swim by the time she was an adult.

The worst thing about the movie was that it is chopped up into back and forth flashbacks that made the movie feel shorter than it was, and you never get long enough to be immersed by which time you swung back into the future. Good casting overall except the main actress is a bit weird looking but I think that is intentional. The scenes in the courtroom also never really reach the agonising levels of tension required to keep you on your toes and rooting for her to win. Overall the payoff at the end is a decent one but it was unnecessary to make the film so disjointed but perhaps the filmmakers experimented with different orders and thought that was the best way to tell the story. I am not convinced the child and adult versions could really be the same person. I think the movie did a good job and its actually surprisingly free of agenda for this type of female leading movie. No wokism and a great cast.

The accents seemed a little to mild to my ear but there was enough for movie purposes. The lead actress and several supporting roles were all done excellently and the directing and editing, in my view, were both outstanding. Talking to others the screenplay went along with the book close enough though a lot of detail had to have been abridged out. I hadn't read the book. My guess is that despite all the naysayers there will be more award nominations than most think. Pretty well done story. How to define something that is fully prefabricated, but has an aura, a tone and an atmosphere that never manages to shine and be perceived with an uncomplicated sense of naturalism?

Where the Crawdads Sings is a film caught in a kind of trance in which its entire setting and characters seem to be trapped, not just in a particular time period, but in a kind of reality in which everything seems to be experienced in a way that is not surreal, but distant from something that might distinguish itself as genuine.

I couldn't overcome that barrier and therefore I couldn't connect with anything, neither with the story, nor with the characters, especially its leading actress, since I couldn't find them convincing, not in their motivations, nor in what they were experiencing.

The proceedings and approach seem simplistic and the mystery barely holds up. There is no catharsis, no sense of excitement towards the end, and its conclusion, while not seemingly pulled out of thin air, also provokes nothing, because it only answers a question, which can basically be intuited without problems long before reaching that point.

Just no.

Split opinion on this. Overall, though, I think my thoughts regarding it are, just narrowly, positive.

'Where the Crawdads Sing' is a tad overlong and I'm not sold on the ending, though even so I think I like this enough. The acting is the big reason for that, with Daisy Edgar-Jones standing out alongside David Strathairn. Taylor John Smith and Garret Dillahunt are solid elsewhere. Away from the actors, most other elements are forgettable.

The conclusion is iffy to me. It was clear the film was holding something back in regards to the story, though the way it eventually goes isn't the most satisfying to me personally. It's a pretty straightforward film, when all is said and done.

It's close to being what I'd consider a miss, but I reckon it just about does enough right. 6/10 doesn't feel fitting to me, so 7/10 it is.

Emotionally Unexpected & Very Sentimental!

This movie is based on a novel (such as the movie title) that I didn't read. I just want to see this movie in the cinema without watching any trailer/spoiler to prevent any expectations. AND my impressions, this is a very satisfying movie!

The main plot is about a girl who lives alone in the marsh after family issues. Slowly, everyone left her. She became an urban myth coz her isolated house. The rest of the plot explains her struggle to live as a loner in her marsh in the isolated place, where the crawdads sing such as the movie title.

The best emotion is perfectly sentimental! The whole narrations are well-developed & delivered to the audience to give heart-touchin' emotions. Personally, I can relate to the story of isolation, struggles, famz issues, and as a loner. Besides, acting performance & movie set add more sentimental value. The actors & actresses are also greatly performed. Their chemistry is really great! Movie duration is suitable, not too long nor too short. Overall, this movie really gives the audience strong emotions, especially with an unexpected plot, sorry no spoilers HAHA.

Personally, this movie's main cons are music. I thought if “Carolina” by Taylor Swift was placed not at the end of the movie, it could make a greater difference. Another con is I felt there was something that missin' or could be added to make this movie perfect. But I don't really know what that is. However, I'll confidently say, this is the most sentimental movie for 2022. It really gives the audience strong emotions and sentiments. It's no wonder why the novel of this movie is a phenomenon! Mustn't miss it with your lovers!

We have a very young girl (7-8) without any means of family or financial support (apart from some mussel gathering) surviving alone in a highly hostile environment, growing up clean and civilized, over a vital decade of her developing youth - seemingly, solely on some meager local storekeeper charity...all this alone is quite a stretch. Now comes the by-the-numbers murder trial, with its manipulative casting of mean, unlikeable prosecution, and most agreeable defense. Then, we the viewer, after being convinced it was not possible, are left with absolutely no knowledge of just how the crime was committed. While good to look at, with a hard-working cast, interesting score, this interpretation does not overcome some poor screenplay information, ending up resembling more of a Romance-Lifestyle Channel movie - still, that seems to be pleasing many undemanding viewers. Kudos to Scarlet Letters for giving us an end-credit crawl with letters large enough that we can all read, complete with gorgeous artwork graphics! Expand

Just by viewing the opening, you already know what happens at the end, so the movie doesn't waste your time in getting to it. Thematically, I suppose, the ending makes sense, but at first I thought it was a little silly. However, the last few minutes truly pay off, giving off a kind of I didn't see that coming vibe. 7.5, it's a good watch, and I'm sure we'll see these actors, actresses, and production crew members again. Additionally, this features the father from Stranger Things, so there's that. Expand

Amazing movie. It had ups and downs. The ending was amazing to believe she was that strong. Great adaptation!

In my opinion, the movie was supposed to be nominated for an Oscar in all categories, but unfortunately the political influence in Hollywood can't be ignored at the moment. Well worth seeing, dramaturgically perfectly staged, great landscape shots, the story is gripping, all the actors deliver a convincing job. So I wish for future films with a focus on drama. Not a minute boring, everything is right. My wife couldn't hold back her tears at the end of the film. Great! Expand

In the past, it seems that there was a greater number of movies that followed the life of a character from beginning to end, in all its complexity.
Movies like Forest Gump, The Notebook, Benjamin Button, etc. And now Where the Crawdads sing.
In the past, it seems that there was a greater number of movies that followed the life of a character from beginning to end, in all its complexity.
Movies like Forest Gump, The Notebook, Benjamin Button, etc. And now Where the Crawdads sing. I hadn't realized how much I missed these movies, which you finish watching in the blink of an eye and still feel like you've spent hours, like you've lived a life with the character.

The beginning of the movie lays the foundation for the personality and character of the main character Kya. A girl who will grow up to be withdrawn from society, as if with an anxiety towards it, a girl who prefers the comfort of her isolated world. The actress, Daisy Edgar-Jones, is exceptional in this role and manages to create these impressions about the character in a constant way, regardless of the situation, whether she is sad or happy, the basic features of the character remain the same.

As for the crime in the story, as a small criticism, most of the characters had plausible reasons and I would have liked it if the film had paid more attention to them, it would have created more mystery and aroused more curiosity. I still believe that the eneding was the best way to complete the story.

I want to mention that I haven't read the book and I'm sorry now that I didn't start with it.

I enjoyed this one! The movie had me guessing the whole time I was watching it. When I thought I had it all figured out I would find out. I was wrong!
