This is the kind of movie that should emotionally manipulate me into a sobbing mess but they barely got ~single tear~.

It's worth a watch if you like football or "inspirational story of" type films.

It drags on for much too long and has characters that are so dull and plain that I can not remember any of their names even though I just saw this movie earlier today. The movie also has a habit of trying to tackle heavy subjects such as cancer, murder, strokes, and child abuse; but doing so with such sloppiness that it comes of as darkly funny rather than sad. Another odd thing the movie had was its Christian undertones. For most of the movie it wasn't too obvious but near the end it just got weirdly blatant. Seriously, don't see this movie. Expand

I love Jim Caveizel as an actor and as a person. No one has taken a hit in Hollywood over the past decade more for his principles. I wanted to see the film just to support him and the message of the film. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie on its own merits. This is a very noble and worthy film. Caveizel does not come across as a typical high school football coach but he very effectively captures Coach Ladouceur's demeanor and integrity. The basic messages of giving perfect effort (even if one cannot guarantee perfect results), becoming someone of integrity and what it means to be someone others can count on really resonate. This is such a refreshing movie compared to most of the nihilistic alternatives currently out there. Please see this movie and take your kids. Expand

This movies is amazing, and very empowering with such real life situations and resolve in healthy ways,
It s a movie for everyone and I wish everyone would see it. It has certainly changed my life, I am not a person who watches football at all, but the movies is much much more that a game, it is about the game of life,
We all suffer and have defining, critical times in our lives, when we have to make hard decisions, This movies will always live in my mind to do the right thing, not the thing I can rationalize,
Please take anyone you can children included to see this movie. it is clean, wholesome but real.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a football movie, just like any other football movie you know the underdogs always wins. I was also forced to watch this movie. I have seen other football movies such as facing the giants and all that jazz. But having a predictable plot and ending is just a slap on the d i c k. The beginning starts with a sucky a s s coach that has probably seen the inside of a girls locker room (if you know what i mean). He's such a f u c k i n g downer that i didn't even want to watch the rest of this ,what felt like, student made feel-good film. The acting is what i would describe as an elderly person falling down a flight of stairs, a miracle, lol jk a f u c k i n g disaster. This movie didn't need to be made. Whoever had the idea of some sh i tty football team the miraculously became the best team in the g o dd a m n world. H e ll these guys could beat the Patriots. From the first 10 minutes of the movie i felt a spicy hot feeling in the d i c k h o l e that kept burning throughout the entire movie. Of course the coach has a child with minor brain problems. And so what that half the team did the same cheerleader and got hep-c. Oh wait wrong movie. What i meant to say was of course the team wins the big one and the coach has a stupid a s s kid finally because everyone thought he was an infertile son of a b it ch. Most of the players were not interesting and were found on the dairy side of walmart. Anyone could have put less of an effort into their role and would still have been more interesting. Yet another boring a s s movie that wasted an hours most of my life that i cant have back. Thanks coach fuhkboi. just dont watch this movie, i would rather you watch the star wars holiday special or anything. Please, for shrek. Thanks for the pepperoni pizza-yours truly-coach's down-syndrome bb Expand

This movie is one of the most boring movies i have ever seen in my life i cant begin to explain the agony i went through watching this movie just went i thought it was over it would cut to another scene in a sweaty locker room with a bunch of roided out jocks talking about how they needed to win another game. The only thing i can remeber is how there team was on a winning streak and they list then they brought it back.......what......you where expecting more....nope...i wonder what how bad the director had downsyndromne to think that people should come to a set and waist time with this movie. This movie even has some random black guy getting shot while in his car waiting on a friend to get out of a party and the quater back having an abusive father and both were so poorly directed i couldnt have cared less and in the end the quarter back throws away a world record of most scored touch downs because that record belongs to the coach and i really didnt care. Just whatever you do dont see this movie actually any copys if the movie you see you should burn. Expand

The one thing you can always count on when watching a football film, is that it's going to be exciting. It doesn't matter ifThe one thing you can always count on when watching a football film, is that it's going to be exciting. It doesn't matter if it's a true story, like When The Game Stands Tall, or a made up one like Friday Night Lights. It doesn't matter if the team has won 100 straight games or lost 100 straight games. Every film about football is going to be exciting, so what makes one better than the other? The personalities involved, it all comes down to who the film is focused on and this film has it's eyes on the prize. Jim Caviezel stars as Bobby Ladouceur, one of the most successful high school football coaches of all-time. Ladouceur became a national celebrity, not only because of a big winning streak, but also because of the way he incorporated family values and religion into his coaching, trying to make his player more well-rounded individuals. Caviezel was outstanding, as he is in everything, but after watching six seasons of Person of Interest, it's almost disappointing seeing Caviezel in a role where he doesn't kill anyone. The other focus of the film is Alexander Ludwig, who portrays Chris Ryan, a kid who has all the talent in the world, but has to decide, if he's pushing himself toward greatness for himself or because of a psychotic father. Ludwig always gets second billing, but as with the Hunger Games, nothing would be as good without him. He is the unsung hero of this film as he rounds out the emotional roller-coaster. When The Game Stands Tall has action, emotion, conflict, religion, family, love, hate, a little bit of everything and believe it or not, at the heart of it all is a simple, stupid little game called football. This film was great, it reminded me a lot of the TV version of Friday Night Lights and it's an absolute can't miss for sports enthusiasts. Expand

Taste the defeat, and once again inspire to rise back to the glory.

Inspired by the real story of a high school American-football coach and his team's participation in the 2004 season. The fall and rise of one of the most consistent team, especially after holding a record for the longest winning streak, what happens when it was broken unexpectedly? Do the players lose the confidence, coach be clueless, parents go crazy and media annoys them, is what neatly this film narrated. It looked nice to me and I had a good time, but it was too long and not inspiring as the other sports film based on the true events.

From the director of 'Coach Carter', another decent sports film. I am not disappointed because I was not expecting to be a masterpiece, though not bad for once viewing. All the actors were good, especially it is Jim Caviezel's one of the major roles and he was amazing. American-football was always been an Americas sport, so I never interested in it except watching films based on them for inspiration. Especially after 'Conccusion', my interest on them dropped further.

Whatever I said is not a reason to skip the film. As a film, it did the right thing to portray the real life achievers on the screen to boost the young sports persons. Only to me it was just an above average, but for many others, it is one of the best sports film of the year. Forget the American-football, what I liked was, achievements are good for our progress and make a career, but sometimes there's much more than making records in the games. So it's a good moral lesson film than a fine entertaining film. I won't recommend it, but definitely not a waste of time.

When the Game Stands Tall is one of those cliché-riddled feel good movies that, by trying too hard to be inspirational, ends up as cloying and overly sentimental.
