Enjoyable, but the story could have been a lot better. I really loved the illustrations, though. Especially the images of the countryside. Talented group of illustrators. About the story, it was a little confusing - and dry. At first IEnjoyable, but the story could have been a lot better. I really loved the illustrations, though. Especially the images of the countryside. Talented group of illustrators. About the story, it was a little confusing - and dry. At first I thought the story was going to be about gender exploration. I initially thought Marnie and Anna had something going on - she always blushed, and the director would focus in on the romantic sensuality between the two girls... but... I'll stop here. Kind of weird. Also, a blonde hair, blue eyed girl by a half Japanese half white father? That was kind of weird. No Hayao Miyazaki, but it's enjoyable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another major brick in the Ghibli cinematic wall. If the movie starts really hard with a considerable amount of emotions it soon becomes more fairy tale-like and suitable for children.

'When Marnie Was There' is another dreamy and twisted feature in witch two little girls get in touch and become friends through time. It clearly benefits from the pros of every other Studio Ghibli movie: great animation (even if jerky from time to time), colourful design, lovable characters, precise feels, incomprehensible scenes and meaningful ending. However it surprisingly manages to lose a significative part of itself in useless scenes and trivial events. It clearly belongs to this category of films you can simply summarize by the sentence 'it was just a dream'. The film is disturbingly sometimes an inch away from endorsing the lesbian romance genre, and then finally not.

In the end it feels like director Hiromasa Yonebayashi tried to force what Studio Ghibli were widely known for, ruining the magic by the same actions.
