This film fails to take more than a cursory glance at the topic of gender and sexual identity and does its best to confuse and mislead the viewer.

Most of the movieMy uncle recommended this movie to me on Christmas Eve, saying he found it to be a well-researched and balanced look into gender ideology. So I watched it today and as a centrist, I have to say that it was a waste of time. Most of the movie is one-sided and unreflected. Just a few scenes look at both sided at the same time. The whole thing feels forced, almost as if everyone has been paid to say what they did. Also, Mr. Walsh has to be one of the most condescending people on TV ever. He is very dishonest in what he says versus what he actually seems to believe. Makes the whole thing unnatural. Safe to say, I'll have to have a talk with Uncle Henry... Expand

ItIn this documentary, Matt Walsh, a right-wing political figure operating for Daily Wire, tries to explain what a woman is by engaging with various people using what seem to be semi-structured interviews - a form of qualitative research. It quickly becomes apparent, however, that Walsh does not have an academic background in sociology, nor has he made an effort to learn the methods around how to conduct these interviews in a manner that is in line with academic standards. Questions that are too suggestive, camera crews who are present in the room with him and the fact that he has received media training beforehand (contrary to most people he interviews) all contribute to skewing the responses his interview partners provide him with. Funnily enough, the only person he interviews who has received media training, is fellow Daily Wire employee and another right-wing figure, Prof. Jordan Peterson - making Walsh's bias during the selection process clear. Because of these errors in the design of his study, the whole documentary begins to fall apart rather quickly. Responses can not be evaluated on equal and neutral grounds, something the documentary lacks in general. Thus it can be said, that this documentary is more of an opinion piece at best and a propaganda video at worst, holding itself only accountable to preexisting ideological frameworks and the questionable views of Matt Walsh. I have seen many great documentaries in my lifetime and I can tell you: This is not one of them.

Let's first address the obvious. Matt Walsh is an outspoken conservative and right-wing pundit, who makes videos criticizing what he calls the "woke left". While a certain degree of bias is unavoidable, his framing and presentation of the topic at hand are uninformed at best and dishonest at worst. No effort is made to understand the struggle of everyday trans people and no scientific refutation is given in terms of how modern medicine is employed to help them. The only criticism on his part is of the ideological nature. Of course he rarely says this is out loud, hiding his true believes instead, in a thinly-veiled attempt at not coming off has disingenuous. Already, this damages the integrity of the documentary.

Secondly, Walsh does not adhere to any academic standard, neither in theory nor in practice. At no point does he reference academic writings by Butler, Foucault, Sontag etc. who lay the groundwork for gender studies. This makes his questions uninteresting, as the answers given do not contribute to scientific discourse as a whole.

Lastly, I have a huge problem with who is interviewed in this documentary. Most of the people who agree with Walsh's conservative point of view are other pundits - known online personalities who have most certainly received media training at one point. They have their talking points at hand and are relatively skilled at debate. The people who argue against him and actually push back are mostly just common doctors and at one point even a father of a transgender child. Naturally, it is harder for them to identify and counter already biased questions. If Walsh had done this documentary in good faith, he would have added debate-like segments with actual debaters like Sam Seder, Kyle Kulinski and others.

In the end, the documentary does not provide anything of substance to the overall discourse around gender studies. Most of what is portrayed as sparking new discourse was already common knowledge - most of what Walsh argues for already disproven by academics. What remains is a man in search of answers that he himself is too biased - and seemingly scared - to find.

When asked about his credentials, he stated to not have any medical experience! Can you believe that? He didn't even attend college! So what is it then, that enables him to interfere a trans person's medical decisions? Especially since every major medical association around the world agrees that gender affirming care saves lifes. His whole shtick is to make a quick buck by tricking people with misinfo. Knowing that, this documentary looses all credibility as a neutral perspective on the topic. You'd learn much more (and be more entertained) by watching Walsh's Commitee Hearing from the 8th of February 2023. Expand

The sheer audacity of assuming such a definitionFrom the outset, the film's premise is laden with misleading claims that reek of ignorance and disingenuity. Take, for instance, the movie's central theme, an attempt to define 'womanhood'. The sheer audacity of assuming such a definition could be universally articulated is both astonishing and problematic. The movie's flawed premise is further compounded by Walsh's lack of nuance in addressing the diversity and complexity of gender identity, reducing the narrative to one-dimensional clichés that do a disservice to the intricacies of human identity.

The film's argument is constructed on a shaky scaffold of logical fallacies that are as transparent as they are misguided. The slippery slope arguments presented in the second act, where the film suggests that acceptance of non-binary identities will lead to societal collapse, is not just ungrounded, but a glaring indication of the director's bias and refusal to engage in good faith argumentation. Similarly, the false dichotomies presented throughout the narrative – suggesting that embracing fluid gender identities somehow threatens traditional gender roles – are not just logically unsound, they are a reflection of a reductive worldview that refuses to acknowledge the spectrum of human experience.

The most egregious aspect of "What is a Woman?" is its exploitative use of paid actors to portray real-world experiences. This is not simply a matter of casting choices; it's a matter of ethics and authenticity. The actors, presumably hired to play the roles of marginalized individuals, are deployed to serve a narrative that perpetuates harmful stereotypes and feeds into a dangerous culture of stigmatization. These performances, devoid of any genuine understanding or lived experience, result in a caricature that does more harm than good, damaging the credibility of the film and further alienating the very group it purports to represent.

Walsh's approach is an exercise in bashing an already marginalized group, cloaking his offensive portrayal under the guise of a 'provocative' exploration of gender. Yet, there is nothing provocative about a narrative that disrespects and undermines the lived experiences of countless individuals. It's not so much a question of 'What is a Woman?', but rather 'What is Walsh trying to achieve?'

In conclusion, "What is a Woman?" is a distressing example of how not to approach sensitive topics in film. It's a missive of misunderstanding, a manifesto of marginalization, and a monument to misinformation. It's a film that not only fails to contribute to the ongoing conversation about gender identity but, in fact, threatens to roll back the progress that has been made. It's a movie that demands not applause, but a critical reevaluation of how we allow such narratives to be spun in the first place.
