I found this film kind of a mess. Arty in its silences and temporal jumps, artless in its sledgehammer symbolism (an alternate title could be "We Need to Talk About Kevin's Intake of Food That Looks Like Blood and Body Parts"), the film asks much of viewers but doesn't reward our patience. Anyone who can't predict exactly what will happen--including the weapon and a rough body count--is in the next theater viewing a different movie; I kept watching because some of these "oops, wrong theater" folk wrote reviews in major papers, reviews promising a big surprise. Oh well. But yes, the acting is wonderful, and the nature/nurture question genuinely fascinating. With a stronger script and fewer pretensions, this film could have been truly compelling.… Expand

The film jumps freely from the aftermath of the attack to the growing pains (literally) of raising him. Of course, it's pretty apparent what's in store, so watching the effects of his malevolence and how she copes forms the fulcrum of the film. While Swinton and Ezra Miller (as the son) give compelling performances, the film's ominous overcast and convoluted structure give it a heavy coating that's just excessive.… Expand

With an optimistic father sire, Kevin's bad behavior culminates in a brutal act. With grotesque expressions, Ezra Miller deserves much praise for a such remorseless act. From the direction till the soundtrack, We need to Talk About Kevin is a technically impeccable motion picture. It provides a unique experience for the viewer, provoking your imagination with a story of pure cruelty, however, close to current reality.… Expand

I just couldn't quite pull it off. "Kevin" was a film that did many things very right, but did enough things completely wrong to ruin it for me. Its hard to describe the disappointing aspects of the film, because so many of them are tied upI just couldn't quite pull it off. "Kevin" was a film that did many things very right, but did enough things completely wrong to ruin it for me. Its hard to describe the disappointing aspects of the film, because so many of them are tied up with the expectations created by the really well done parts. The visual storytelling starts out strong, enabling viewers to get to know characters and plot elements on an emotional level with out everything being spelled out to the letter. The problem is the film begins to deal with absolutes, and the visual storytelling begins to fail. There are beautifully shot, almost abstract segments in the film which instead of hinting at larger elements of characters and plot, are often used to brush over key elements of relationships (the mother and father in particular) and diluting character development in the process. Kevin's character is portrayed as an absolute evil, and overall a very one dimensional, similarly with the father, who is completely clueless throughout the film. There is a subtlety that is wants so badly to be the core of the film but is consistently failing throughout through the hands of barefaced writing/directing. Tilda Swinton fights hard to keep her character interesting, but the other actors, especially those that played Kevin didn't stand a chance.

Honestly, I can only Imagine that there were people working on this film who all had vastly different ideas of how it should turn out, and in the end it feels like the directing is what sunk the ship.… Expand

The outer need for perfection while the interior is crumbling, the idea that because a couple CAN have a child, they should, the unwillingness to actually TALK about Kevin... all of this leads to the creation of monster--but that creation is inevitable. Far smarter than most will give this film for, see it and watch it carefully. Until the final, horrific moments, is Kevin the monster, or are his parents? Who created whom? This is a chilling film guaranteed to haunt, and Swinton's performance is perfection. Understated and genuine, she is genius.… Expand

The story is somewhat muddled by the face that you have an evil child ( think Omen evil ) who then in latter life commits a massacre. Woefully tedious performances that bear absolutely zero resemblance to reality make this film seriously B grade even though the budget was strong enough to lure 'professional' names. Avoid this film or I guarantee you will be disgustedly disappointed in yourself for not heeding this warning.… Expand

Ah comme on aimerait qu'au moins une fois cette mère mollassonne s'énerve, pique un coup de sang, lui hurle dessus, lui crache au visage ou qu'elle lui file un coup de pelle ! pendant tout le film, on s'énerve à sa place, on s'indigne, on souffle, on fulmine. On se demande lequel des deux est le pire finalement : le petit connard ou sa mère complètement dépassée. Et ne parlons pas du père à la masse, complètement gaga avec le fiston chéri curieusement tout miel avec son papounet !

Le film utilise habilement de nombreux retours en arrière pour faire monter la tension et retracer l'évolution du dégénéré -comme si on était pas assez énervé comme ça- jusqu'à la fin choquante qui révulse littéralement : non seulement les "oeuvres" de son charmant antéchrist mais surtout la conclusion qui n'en est pas une (un coup à balancer la télécommande) avec cette mère toujours aussi conne, jusqu'au bout.

La réalisatrice s'entête et se complaît dans ce portrait répugnant de l'ignoble Kévin comme un cochon qui se roule de plaisir dans sa propre merde et Dieu sait pourtant que même nos amis les cochons ont leur dignité. Une telle complaisance serinée pendant deux heures finit par vider de sens tout le propos du film -si propos il y eut jamais- et débouche sur une coquille vide. Peut-être l'intention initiale si simpliste n'est-elle que de choquer et de provoquer ? à cet égard, c'est mission accomplie !… Expand

This is one of the most disturbing films I think I've seen. Tilda Swinton tells the entire story through simple expression. There isn't a performance from the four leads that isn't right on target. The cutting from Swinton's loneliness into the life that led up to the incident is a little confusing in the beginning but once your realize that something is terribly wrong here it works. The script is tight and doesn't tell all or attemtp to throw you off it just leads you throughout the story. One of the best films of 2011 and definitely the best performance by an actress. John C. Reilly once again proves he is one of the best character actors working today. Ramsay does a great job and even though it's difficult to watch this is one of those films where instead of saying "why the hell are they going in the basement" you allow Ramsay to open the door and push you through.… Expand

It's a very good movie, but has some disappointing solutions to make it excellent. Unfortunately, too predictable, but definitely worth watching. I'm glad I did. And the fact that it still makes me think of it is a good recommendation.

A mother's recap of the events leading up to her son's high school massacre was very well executed on so many different levels. On one level; Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller did great work in their respective roles as mother (Eva) and son (Kevin). On another; the wildly structured, horror inspired screenplay and film editing were quite interesting. And on a final level, the subtle yet detailed sound mix placed the viewers right in the movie. Not much coverage surrounding this film, it had very convincing performances and a plot that would curl the greasiest of hairs, excellent and thought-provoking film, but downright disturbing.

Adapted from the 2003 book of the same name,Tilda Swinton puts in an Oscar worthy as mother Eva, who basically centres the film as we see a movie that is not of a linear nature, this help maintain the suspense and confusion as to what exactly her adolescent son Kevin had done.
Swinton's character is, in all regards, a wreck, her reluctance at taking an interest without showing fake signs of over-bearing clearly outline her regret at having children. She finds it difficult to communicate emotionally with Kevin, he often rebelled as a child, toilet training, etc. John C.Reilly puts in a more serious performance from what we are used to as Evas husband, Franklin, who continuously makes excuses for Kevin's behaviour, a particular scene involving a young Kevin attempting to blackmail his mother with the scar of broken arm that she caused, clarifies the troubles that the family face.
WNTTAK deals with the lasting effect of what having children may do to one's mental status, not necessarily the barbaric events in the conclusion of this excellent thriller, but a look at how a typical family can malfunction due to no steady relationship being present.
The performances are eerily spot on in this film, Ezra Miller is psychopathic and maniacal as Kevin, often coming across as a misunderstood individual, when the 'accidents' that occur throughout the film are brought to light, his sickly ushers at his mother but his puppy dog eyes to his father are particularly brilliant.
Reilly's character of the dad who doesn't see any wrong in Kevin, is sometimes infuriating, which is exactly what this film sets out to do.
But it is the performance of Swinton in particular that needs praised, she truly owns the screen each time she appears, her paranoid glances at her teenage son and her often blank expression in real time as the story is told from her flashbacks of family life.
Taking different time-frames worked brilliantly for this film, often the case of Eva reminiscing about her days before motherhood. Her constant fears about Kevin will no doubt keep you engrossed as to whether her concerns are indeed reality.
Gripping, disturbing, but certainly unmissable… Expand

Americans are fascinated with criminals, and most films about them either focus on the criminal or on the people who are trying to catch them. With the recent uptake in school shootings, the one element that is often overlooked is the parents and what, if any, their role is in all of this. That is the focus of award winning film, We Need To Talk About Kevin. Kevin (Ezra Miller) has always been an angry, troubled kid, brought up by an upper middle class family. Kevin had a loving family, everything he could ever want, but still orchestrated a horrific mass shooting at his school. Despite all evidence to the contrary, his mother (Tilda Swinton) can't help but think that somehow everything is her fault, and by and large the community agrees. This is far and away one of the strongest performances I've ever seen Tilda Swinton give, and that's saying a lot, because she has always been terrific. Watching this was almost difficult, as one could actually feel her pain and see in her eyes the emotional toll everything had taken on her. She did nothing wrong, but everyone from the press to the owner of the local grocery store, blames her for the actions of her son. The film flashes between before, during, and after the event to show the differences in the lives and personalities of the characters, in a way that I've never seen before, it was really ingenious. This film delves deeper into the heart of darkness and into the eyes of the unseen victims in one of the most powerful films I've seen in years. We Need To Talk About Kevin may even be too emotionally overwhelming for some, but by in large it is one of the hardest hitting and most realistic dramas you may ever find.… Expand

There were, for me, 2 key features of this film that define it. Firstly, the focus on the psychological impact of trying to bring up Kevin and then of the consequences of her actions as a mother are an intelligent way of approaching this story. Complex emotions including guilt, horror, despair but also love are superbly brought out by Lynne Ramsay and Tilda Swinton. This is the power of the film. The child actors and Ezra Miller are excellent. The second key feature is the weakness of John C. Reilly's role: I like him as an actor, but this role is weak and out of kilter with the subtlety of the rest of the film in that he ignores obvious signs of Kevin's behaviour and its impact. A film of this quality demands that his role be more nuanced and show more signs of confusion/worry/disturbance at the way his family is developing. Overall the film is highly watchable and carried by a fine director and lead female actor - and you'll be thinking about it for some time to come.… Expand

The film was so far from reality. I know it's not supposed to be based on reality, but there wasn't anything realistic about this film. For those of you who read the book - it's a good take on the story as it doesn't follow the same structure, but obviously the ending is more or less the same. Why do people do what they do? What makes people what they are? This film doesn't give an answer (nor does any other film) but it does give you a glimpse which makes this bleak film rather intriguing. The problem is that the Kevin character is one annoying sh*t (intentionaly so) which also makes watching this film a bit annoying but it ads to the creepy and uneasy feel this film has. It gives the impression it's building up to something (it does in a way) but at the end it still feels like there has to be something more, like something's missing that would make this good movie an instant classic...… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Brilliant, disturbing, evocative. The performance by Swinton is amazing but nothing compared to Miller and especially Jasper Newell. The kid just conveys malice with every scene and the one scene where he's actually nice is the most tense because you expect something bad to happen. I'm not sure she created the monster but it's apparent to me she was complicit in developing it. Perfect performances all around. Miller (Afterschool) is a great talent and he manages to pull off being at once amazingly cute and friendly while you know there's something really frightening in there that only Swinton can see. There's at least one scene in this featuring Newell that will give you nightmares because it's just too realistic how this precocious kid uses his intelligence to manipulate. Can debate reality of the 'school shooting' but it's pretty much immaterial because it would've happened in some way or other. Super visually, acted to perfection, and will leave you with lots more questions than answers, one of the best films I've seen.… Expand

We Need to Talk About Kevin is honestly bone chilling. An almost hypnotic experience, the film is told non-linearly and is honestly a jarring experience. Tilda Swinton is brilliant, Ezra Miller is great, and John C. Reilly is great as the enabling father. The first film I have seen from director Lynne Ramsay, this one virtually guarantees I will be checking out her other work. Brilliant direction on her part to really capture the mental anguish the actions of one kid can cause and the long lasting damage that comes with it. However, the film does a great job leading up to it and really building to the event that really provides a good context for the actions taken by Kevin and shows how it could have been prevented if somebody had done something. As a whole, We Need to Talk About Kevin is a great film that features stellar performances across the board and is a truly haunting experience in a way that most psychological thrillers can only dream.… Expand

I bought this movie, which i wouldn't recommend to anyone, though it has it's bright point. The film was based on the book of the same name, directed by a Scottish director. A psychological thriller, one of those what some people feel uncomfortable watching it. The film holds a suspense from the past event, it is not going to be revealed until the final quarter. Till then makes us to keep guessing it. Followed by the pieces of flashback, the story of a mother who struggled to raise his first born, a boy named Kevin was told.

It takes us to show how happy she was before. Once she got pregnant, everything changed in her life forever. She failed to understand her son. Ever since he was a baby, he had given her a lot of trouble. When he reaches his teenage, it becomes even more complication to her to handle him and events around him. But a big blow is what shocks the entire neighbourhood and her life turns a hell.

Shot within a month. Tilda Swinton's one of the best, maybe the best of all the bests. She should have been nominated for the Oscars. I think that's one of the greatest snub ever. The supporting cast was amazing too, including John C. Reilly in a small part and particularly those Kevins from different ages. The overall tone was great, the atmosphere was created perfectly to the kind of story it dealt.

I should have watched it earlier, but you know the type of film we look for and moods, all some times influence to miss a film narrowly. Anyway, it was on my watch list and I am finally going to scratch that off. It was a good film, but there's nothing special. The theme was strong, and seems like straight out of a real event, particularly these things are common in the United States. So if you are an American or familiar with the American culture, it will interest you.

This is not as inspiring film, but kind of factual film like parenting failure. The end was disturbing, yet there's nothing bold revelation in the narration. Definitely an interesting take, though blaming parents, especially the mother was kind of disappointing, as well as depressing. That's why the tale was commenced since pregnant till the final twist. Actually, it was the editing tricks that make the film to have a twist. Otherwise, it is a straightforward story. Not bad for viewing once. It was slow and too long, if you think you can manage that, then you could try it.

Depressing is something I generally don't mind in cinema, if it has a point. I also enjoyed the use of color. You will notice that the colors from Kevin's target (red, yellow, blue, and white) feature heavily in nearly every scene. At times, however, this use of color gives the movie an inappropriate Wes Anderson feel.

In every other sense, this movie is a failure. The characters are one dimensional studies in absolutism. This character is EVIL, this character is SUPPORTIVE, this character is UNHAPPY. The symbolism is oppressive and used like a mallet. Everything EVIL eats is bloody or shaped like a body part. EVIL is MEAN. The narrative is jumbled, sometimes purposefully, sometimes not. And the story itself is... ludicrous. At times it feels like a social commentary on parenting, but at others it's a character study of a sociopath, and the movie doesn't know what to be when. The performances are lackluster, at best, especially for Tilda Swinton. There's just... nothing worth watching in this movie. See something else.… Expand

Yes... i know this film came before Manchester by the Sea but i've had watched it afterwards, and i cant stop myself from comparing these two films, i might have like this film if not.

we need to talk about the score, a six for me is generally for films that have flaws but i can enjoy, this film i cant enjoy but it is a very well made film so i cant call myself an amateur critic and ignore this fact.

the film tries to give meaning to unimportant things or things you could figure out your self, the main conflict is of a woman trying to live life after an horrific tragedy, and now comes the part where i compare the two films, Manchester by the Sea has this conflict, but not as the main one so the film doesn't need to pad run-time like the pretty short film I'm reviewing right now, they both give clues very carefully throughout the film, but Manchester has more than one story to tell in those details, We Need to Talk About Kevin has only one, and all the other details are just meaningless in the bigger picture, and you can realize generally what happened in the first 15 minutes of the film and i don't need the whole background of the event from start to finish told me for no reason, and from start to finish is in the very start, around 15 years before the event takes place start.

Manchester tackles this kind of story better than the other film and there is no reason to watch this one, its meaningless and it thinks it is impotent and good because it delivers the story in a unique way, the only problem is the story isn't long enough for a feature length film to be told about it.… Expand

WHAT I LIKED: It's a genuinely frightnening, scary tale of a confusing character who is explored incredibly well. The acting is all excellent and it's nothing short of amazing during the truly thrilling third act

A narrativa intercorre entre passado e presente, lidando com as consequências e "causas" do ocorrido. Ramsay não tem medo de deixar-nos sem respostas. Esta é uma obra que exige ser vista e re-vista, pois tal estudo de personagem não pode ser compreendido apenas em primeira instância.

A atmosfera do filme é inóspita. Todo contexto já leva a isso, mas por conta de uma direção maestral, temos a mesma enormemente elevada. A escolha de planos, que levam a simbologia - muitas vezes ambígua; enriquece muito o subtexto. Em diversos momentos do filme, tentamos montar o quebra cabeça que a narrativa compõe - quanto as causas do Kevin ter feito o atentado; até o clímax. Pode ser decepcionante para algumas pessoas, visto que não há resposta simples, mas é disso que o filme se trata. A tensão é tamanha que no último ato você mal consegue ficar parado, e a conclusão é tão cruel que, mesmo esperada, nos atinge como um trem. As lacunas davam uma certa esperança, mas tudo vem a baixo no final que sempre esteve lá, e só não queríamos acreditar.

A fotografia é atenta e, como dito acima, trabalha bem com a simbologia proposta pela direção. E falando na mesma, as escolhas das músicas não poderiam ser melhores. O uso de músicas anti-climáticas tem um impacto muito perceptível na trama, sendo quase insuportável - o que aqui é caracterizado como um fator positivo.

As atuações estão surpreendentes da mesma forma. Tilda Swinton teve o difícil papel de lidar com uma mãe psicologicamente abalada, não só no presente mas como no futuro. Ezra Miller também estava excelente, passando muito do seu ódio pelo seu olhar. A transição entre ele, Jasper Newell e Rock Duer foi muito bem feita, com todos muito bem dirigidos.

Precisamos falar sobre Kevin é um filme complexo, tenso, autoral, com um estudo de personagem riquíssimo que nos leva a uma crise impotente por simplesmente não podermos fazer nada.

This is quite a sinister and mysterious movie, one in which the viewer is left in the dark for the majority of the film about what precisely is behind all the clearly strange circumstances.

It has quite an eery feel to it because its set in what they call suburbia, where there's presumably a fairly closed knit community, yet its clear that Eva lives a very anxious life, being quite panicky and defensive, yet at the same time seemingly shrugging off very peculiar things that happen, such as red paint appearing all over the outside of her house. The whole time, your left trying to piece the pieces together to figure out what leads to a seemingly very dark outcome and often music is played to enhance the atmosphere and further hint at what lies beneath the perhaps more humdrum scenes that are shown towards the start. There are scenes played in slow motion with loud stringed instruments audible that heighten the sense of franticness.

I found it intriguing to see how the relationship between mother and son seemed to unravel from earlier years onwards. I'd say its one of those movies where there's actually fairly little in the way of dialogue but its the lack of speech thats most telling, if that makes any sense?.

I couldn't help but wonder what the agenda was with Kevin - you can see how vindictive and menacing he is, with the child actor making very strong eye contact with Eva, as if to say he's the one in control. Both the child actors (there are various, representing Kevin at different ages) and Tilda Swinton give very good performances. I found this to be a really engrossing movie - first (as a viewer) your left feeling confused and later on, mid way through, you feel concerned that you know what's going to happen but want to see how it pans out so you can perhaps figure out what may have been a trigger or turning point. It seems quite an isolating experience for poor Eva, as the way its shown it appears almost as if she's the only target of his anger.

As far as the theme is concerned, this covers a sensitive area for most parents I'd imagine, the fear of your own child and worry of what they may ultimately be capable of. Although this has been covered in other more horror based movies, this, to me, seems more of a drama/psychological thriller thats less horror based, in a way its more sinister because there's none of the thunder and lightning type theatrics, its all rather more matter of fact and modern than some of the other movies with similar plots I suppose.

This film actually made me think about the way I interact with my parents and how that maybe comes across at times. I'm certainly nothing like Kevin but it does make you realise how challenging such confrontational people or kids can be, when you have those sort of stand offs where anything thats said or suggested is automatically shot down, almost as a matter of principle - it must be very frustrating. I have some experience in my job where I witness badly behaved teenagers fairly regularly, unfortunately but at least their not my own(!). I could certainly understand Eva's struggles to deal with him, all things considered its very hard not to feel sorry for her, while other people on the street judge her harshly. The story is played out primarily though Eva's eyes, with flashbacks before and after the final event depicted near the end. I found myself feeling really quite tense, its quite a hard watch even as a non-parent (if such a term exists?). Its very engrossing and compelling though. One potential downside, however, is the use of shaky camerawork, which may be a put off to people who tend to feel a bit dizzy or nauseous by suck jerky sways.

Content wise, there's very strong language and bloody violence hinted at or otherwise. As I say, its quite haunting and the theme is one that would make me say its not suitable for anyone with perhaps a tendency to paranoia perhaps?. Otherwise, there are a couple of brief sex scenes although their not overly graphic but I don't think there's anything else particularly worth mentioning otherwise - mainly its the themes present thats likely to cause issue as well as debate, I'd imagine.

Pace wise its a bit slow at first and of course confusing but the pace certainly builds up after a while. The ending leaves the viewer with questions, much as Eva is left - some things are answered but the ultimate question it seems isn't, which could frustrate some people but its that which the movie is all about really, questioning Kevin, trying to get inside his mind. If you like your movies to come to precise starts, middles and ends, plot wise (if you follow) then this may not be entirely to your liking.

Yes I'd recommend this movie, as I found it very engrossing and thought provoking.… Expand

disturbing but meaningful in so many ways that you have to watch this memorable psychological movie. the only criticism would be this: at some point, you feel like you need more graphic scenes and its too laid back on some levels.

Although the film is weak in characterization, especially for the character of the father, but thanks to the good direction, the film is strong and interesting.
Some friends say that the film asks the audience many questions and puts them in different situations, but it does not tell or give anything to the audience, and I reply that this is exactly pure cinema. The film raises important concepts that people should talk about, such as violence and its origin, unwanted pregnancy and its effects, inappropriate attachment patterns, the role of parents, the institution of the family and the role of society, attention, and more. The film also blends time well with its structural pattern and keeps the audience in time, present and past at the same time. At the end, the film raises this important question: How did kevin become a monster?… Expand
