For those of you that took your children to see it, do some research next time, read the novel, find out what you are taking your 'impressionable' minds to watch. Little girls getting eaten by dogs, people getting ripped up, yeah, its all in there. Rape, mayhem, hell, they omitted a ton of violence. Just wait for the DVD of the comic 'black freighter' to come out. Riding on a boat made of the corpses of your fallen comrades?? The book discusses the depth of destruction, corruption and violence that society has fallen to. Nations at each others throats with the only chance of unity in the world riding on the shoulders of some worldwide disaster (i.e. 'Squid Thing' in the novel, nuclear bombs in movie) propelling people to take a look at what they value, what is worth fighting for. Should we fight each other or are there things out there worth making peace with our neighbor for that we might be stronger to battle evils that we alone cannot defeat. Remember, the novel was written back in the 80s, when the world was waiting for WWIII to destroy humanity. Those of you who went thinking 'omg superhero movie' need to actually read some variety of 'comic' books, because that is what it is, its a 'comic' not a superhero movie, and comics cover an extremely wide variety of genres. If you said worst movie ever, I'm sorry, off the top of my head, Cronicles of Riddick, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (another Alan Moore adaptation) are movies that come to mind just off the top of my head. But, as I stated earlier with the parents taking their kids to see this, if you are going to review something that is an adaptation, you need to actually 1.) read the novel the movie is going to be based on 2.) research information about the novel, because guaranteed, one read through does not get you all the subtle, in depth nuances and, lets face it, many of you out there are too stupid to get them anyway since you took your children to see this movie. and 3.) understand that novels turned into film are never going to be able to include everything (i.e. why you need to read the novel) and to include everything that would satisfy your inability to comprehend what is going on during the film would take 4+ hours and lets face it, I don't want to sit for 4 hours just because you are an idiot, I will wait for the unrated/extended version to come out on DVD, understanding that a lot of the novel cannot be included in the film and thus what they will include for viewers is what attracts the largest audience: sex and violence. Remember, Hollywood is about making money, their output is what sells the most, those of us that actually enjoy the novels that films are based on must at least wait for the DVD in order to actually see what the director wanted to include in the film to make an unbiased judgement on the film. Finally, I did knock the film 2 points because I agree that the soundtrack sucked and my 2 friends and one of their wives was with me and we all laughed at the soundtrack, but all of us thoroughly enjoyed the film. BTW: props to Snyder for actually showing Manhattan's penis, it was in the novel but I didn't think they would have the balls to put it into the film, so hats off for all the risks he took with this film. Though simplified, the themes and the ideas behind the story are in tact. The film even gave me a better understanding and appreciation of the graphic novel. And the love (sex) scene that everyone is so cranky about? I usually think these scenes are completely gratuitous but in The Watchmen I felt it was pointed, relevant and moving. Make no mistake. Truly one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune to sit through. You'd think Dr. Manhattan -- super genius and all powerful master of the universe -- could conjure up a pair of pants but no, apparently that eludes his grasp.

He chose to stick so closely to the comic at parts and then totally make up an entire scene at another. Instead of using oldies which I like should have scored the whole movie. The comic is infinitely better. It has the whole story. It has the story within the story. The format totally ruined the Watchmen experience. I feel like those that only know the movie have been robbed of one of the best pieces of all time. Its not the worst movie ever but it is very far from the best. Expand

Don't expect Spiderman or The Dark Knight. I thought this movie was much more driven by the plot and the characters than the action (although I thought the scattered action sequences were great). The characters are very fleshed out--their motivations, histories and flaws are revealed in coordination with the plot in a manner I thought very effective. The characters, plot, and even soundtrack do a great job depicting the setting, which is really an integral part of the film's meaning. It was thought-provoking without being preachy, had good plot and action, and showed some pretty good skin. All around winner as long as you don't go in expecting a blow-em-up shoot-em-up action overload. Expand

I read the graphic novel within a week of seeing the film, and I have to say the transition is incredibly faithful. Folks that say the transition was way off clearly read the comic back in the eighties, because more than half of the comic's scenes are directly in the film, dialogue and all. The same themes are conveyed, aside from the parallel Mariner side story being excluded (to be included in the special features, I hear). Zack Synder is to be commended. Aside from outfit changes, the characters are the same. Most of the alterations to scenes are aesthetic, or cut out for redundancy. To parents out there, you're not very good at your job if you took your kids to the movie and were appalled at the content. This movie isn't rated G or PG13, it's pretty clearly labelled as an adult film. And it's great BECAUSE of not just another comic book movie, it's a bit more meaningful. Also, softcore porn? There were one and a half sex scenes. Have you watched...anything...in the past 30 years...film or otherwise? There were identical scenes in the comic. Archetyping? Watchmen the graphic novel had archetypes. Sorry to rain on fanboy parades there. Expand

The dialogue is not boring or long, but rather intelligent and insightful into the characters and the situations this world, and our own, face. I have not read the graphic novel yet, but as a movie, it is extremely solid. If you liked The Dark Knight, this is another piece to put into your collection. It takes many of the themes present in The Dark Knight, and doubles them into an explosive, volatile, and imaginative movie. A must for all action film-goers, especially the super hero fans. Expand

Almost The problem with this movie is that it does what everyone wants when it comes to adaptation and only proves that movies that are in tune with their novel counterparts will be slow and poorly paced when translated to the big screen. Almost every other film based on another medium has disappointed readers yet those movies are often very entertaining. Aside from that the film was shot beautifully and acted well it just fell short because of its pacing. Had the story fit into the standard 2 hour formula (something I consider to be impossible) it would have probably been better received. I find myself both loving and hating this film at the same time. If you really don't have the patience to read the actual source I would suggest watching the first episode of the motion comics and seeing if it intrigues you enough to continue on. Expand

Being a fan of the graphic novel, I think that Zack Snyder did faithful job, though I had wished that the side characters had more screen-time (I now have the Director's Cut on Blu-Ray, and they are included a little more, as with a few scenes from the novel that fans will recognize). When I got the said Director's Cut on Blu-Ray, I started to watch it more like a cinema goer who had not read the comic. It immediately went from an 8 to a 9. This is a REALLY GOOD FILM. The acting is terrific (Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Billy Crudup as Doctor Manhattan are standouts), the sets are superb, the music very well placed (the opening credits are perfect, you'll love them even more if you'd read the graphic novel), and the story interesting. Billy Crudup truly brings Doctor Manhattan to life, it is impossible to care for humanity, but he tries so hard to. J.E.H. is definitely the best as Rorchach: He's cool and dark in the mask, but once you see his face, he is absolutely convincing (my favorite part of the movie, among others, was when after he threw the hot oil on a prisoner who was about to shiv him and security is taking him away, he says "What you don't understand... I'm not locked up in here with you... YOU'RE LOCKED UP IN HERE WITH ME!"). What will probably turn some people off is the violence, which is actually more brutal than in the comic. I think that Snyder did this to contrast with normal superhero movies, in which violence is spectacular and you cheer the hero on. This movie is showing that it's not stellar, it's dark, twisted, unpleasant, and sometimes just plain hard to look at. The tones and angles of different shots re-enforce the feeling of a noir movie, which I really like. Most of the people I initially saw the movie with didn't think much of Matthew Goode's portrayal of Ozymandias, but I believe that he made him much more sinister and jaded than in the comic, and I would like to compliment him for that (not like he's reading this review or anything). Plus, a nice touch was the german accent when he spoke in private (you can't exactly do that in the comic, *wink*). Overall, a great movie. In my opinion, it works for both fans of the graphic novel and cinema goers. If you do decide to see this, please get the Director's Cut. It's longer, but it's worth it, especially if you are an initial Watchmen fan. Expand

I wanted to see something spectacular that went with all the extreme hype, one thing I can say the fight scenes were on the mark. But when I hear comments from others stating "It can be compared to the Dark Knight" there is no comparison! Heres how you can compare this movie, it is like going from Sin City (which had a great storyline)to a cheaper version like the Spirit(which was all over the place) then trying to pass it off as a great film. Hopefully there will be better writing in the next series for the Watchmen cause America wants to see a little less talk and alot more action, If you bill the movie as a superhero action film, make it so, not a drug out love story or a wheres Waldo approach , thats a good way to lose the audience. The Director is Zack Snyder, the man behind the extraordinary 300 (2006). He also directed the simple but effective horror, DAWN OF THE DEAD in 2004. Snyder is a young Director that his track-record never flaw until now. The cinematography on thiz film is still stunning, every scene made with a great detail. The Watchmen original material comes from graphic comic written by Alan Moore. Every character in Watchmen is very unique. The most unique character maybe is Dr. Manhattan, who played by Billy Crudup. The other Casts are: Malin Akerman, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino , and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Watchmen told a story about a group of super heroes dealing with the society on alternate world in 1985. One side, they needed to maintain peace, and the other side, they had put in distance because of their oddity .The soundtracks support well to give a precise atmosphere during thiz film. The conflict along the plots was in order and proportional. Malin Akerman physical appearance as Silk Spectre II, in my opinion is the best presentation of superhero character. The posture and shape what superhero should looks like appears perfectly. The climax on this movie was also very fair, where we could blurred by who is the bad guys or good guys. Thiz shows us the movie was far mature that seem to be.

Watchmen is an example of both. Alan Moore's graphic novel changed comics forever, and proved to the world once and for all that they could be taken seriously as a medium. Perhaps the film version hasn't had the same impact, but it should be respected nonetheless. It's a real shame that Moore disowned the project after seeing sub-par film adaptations of From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, as Zack Snyder's Watchmen is a very good film. It's a pessimistic view of an alternate universe with real superheroes, a world of heightened Cold War paranoia and near-constant awareness of human mortality. The heroes of this universe are all deeply flawed, and make for fascinating characters - Jackie Earle Haley's psychotic masked vagrant Rorschach, Patrick Wilson's idealistic but impotent and out-of-shape caped crusader Nite Owl and Billy Crudup's increasingly removed nuclear man-god Dr. Manhattan being particular highlights. Snyder's films are always visually stunning, but Watchmen sets a new standard, as often it looks like Dave Gibbon's artwork has stepped straight off the page and onto the big screen, and Snyder's good sense for over-the-top violence and dynamic cinematography serves this living comic for grown-ups well. The film's standout scenes are the interconnected flashbacks that flesh out the characters, their relationships with each other, and what drives them, and Dr. Manhattan's origin story is particularly emotionally engaging. Watchmen also has one of the most memorable opening credits sequences on film, presented as a striking and really quite beautiful extended montage that establishes just how much has changed in a world that has had masked vigilantes operating in it since the late 1930s, all with Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin'" playing over the top. Watchmen isn't perfect - it's rather long, yet somehow the final act still feels rushed and a little clumsily put together, and there's the odd plot-hole to be found in the theatrical release (thankfully resolved in the director's cut), but Zack Snyder's vision of Alan Moore's universe is still one of the more faithful, respectful and coherent book-to-film adaptations. Snyder retains all of the "meat" of Moore's book and brings it to life with expert visual execution. They said Watchmen could never be filmed. They were wrong. Expand

Everything, from the adapted script to horrible acting and poor casting, fails.

If you liked the idea, read the comic. This material is simply not meant to be defended by the argument "I simply enjoyed it". It is literature and a masterpiece, butchered by Hollywood and Zach Snyder's pretense.

Firstly, I want to say that as a standalone film, Watchmen is more than adequate. However, as an adaptation of the best graphic novel of all time, it doesn't meet the standards set by it's paper-back sibling.
Watchmen is one of those rare anomalies that, despite it's amazing story, characters and setting, could never work as a film. The sharp, juxtaposition of panels and storylines in the comic is something so stylized and unique that it could only succeed in a written medium. As a film, it loses its punch. The pacing doesn't always feel right and, for me, the characters were always more interesting when I read the comics and shaped their voice and movement myself rather than an actor portraying them.
My advice: read the comic, you'll love it. If you're desperate, check out this film. However, I feel that as the comic works so well on its own, the film does nothing to interest me further than what I already loved about the grand universe of Watchmen.

And yes, I do believe it is one of the most interesting, involving, thought-provoking, mind-blowing books I've ever read of any genre. Anyone who's read my reviews of comic book-inspired movies knows I've never claimed to be a comic book fan. I usually steer clear of the medium, but Watchmen was a must-read (actually a must-read over and over). And being a Watchmen fan going into Warner Bros Pictures' and Zack Snyder's film adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' critically acclaimed work, I had high hopes for this feature film based on what's widely regarded as unfilmable source material. Did Snyder's cinematic vision live up to expectations? Absolutely. Snyder and writers David Hayter and Alex Tse had to lose portions of the graphic novel (which first appeared as a comic book series in the mid-1980s) in order to condense the story into a reasonable running time and comprehensible narrative. They also had the difficult task of making the film accessible to those who haven't read Watchmen without trampling on the dreams of Watchmen fans who've been waiting decades for a movie based on Moore and Gibbons' characters. Watchmen fans must realize going in that this is not a panel by panel adaptation in the vein of 300. That would have been an impossible endeavor given the richness and sheer depth of the graphic novel. As such, important portions of Watchmen have been left out. Failing to make the cut in the feature film are any mentions of Tales of the Black Freighter (an animated short is being released separately on DVD) and Hollis Mason's Under the Hood. And Watchmen the movie relegates the past members of the Minutemen to mere fleeting glimpses in the film's marvelously inventive opening credits (one of the best lead-ins to a film I can recall). The ending's also been drastically tweaked. But all that aside, most importantly, the message, the tone, and the six central characters have made the leap to the big screen nearly completely intact. Alan Moore used Watchmen as a way to deconstruct the superhero genre while at the same time reflecting on world issues. What sacrifices would we be willing to make in order to save the world from itself? Does the end justify the means, if it entails the loss of life in order to stop a nuclear war? Watchmen is set in an alternate 1980's reality in which presidential term limits are no longer enforced and the Doomsday Clock is closer than ever to striking midnight as the United States and Russia move toward nuclear war. In this twisted world, costumed vigilantes once worked side by side with law enforcement. Known as the Minutemen, these crime-fighters didn't have any special powers, just the desire to clean up the streets. As the original group aged and moved on, a new wave of costumed crime-fighters popped up. This new group (the Crimebusters) followed in the footsteps of the Minuteman, rounding up bank robbers and murderers, all without the backing of the power of a badge. But the tide eventually turned and costume-wearing vigilantes were forced into retirement with the passage of the Keene Act (the film glosses over this part of the story). After the passage of the Keene Act, Dr Manhattan and The Comedian, a ruthless, morally bankrupt, cold-blooded killer, are allowed to continue to work with/work for the government. Rorschach, another member of the team, continues to hunt down villains but does so unofficially, outside the confines of the law. Although Snyder and company serve up backstories by way of flashbacks, most of the action in the movie Watchmen takes place following the murder of The Comedian. Rorschach becomes driven to find the truth behind who killed The Comedian (someone he holds in high regard despite his despicable acts). In order to ferret out the killer and find out if whoever it is is targeting costumed vigilantes and for what purpose, Rorschach pulls his old crime-fighting compadres out of retirement. As Rorschach, Nite Owl II, and Silk Spectre II dig into this plot to kill all 'superheroes', they uncover a conspiracy the depths of which they never anticipated upon hearing the news of The Comedian's murder.
Watchmen is not a film for everyone and it won't connect with audiences looking for the standard superhero genre flick. Watchmen is unflinchingly violent, there's nudity (Dr Manhattan's penis is right there in your face even if you blink, you won't miss it), raw sex, and there's none of the lighthearted superhero-type moments in this that we've come to expect from major motion picture adaptations of comic books. Watchmen presents a world in which actions have real consequences and they're not necessarily pretty, and if people were in fact superheroes, they'd be warped and in desperate need of some serious therapy. This film's gritty and nasty and you want to wash your hands when you're done watching it. But I'm betting after just one screening of the film, you'll think more about Watchmen than any other comic book/graphic novel-inspired movie you've ever witnessed.

A great film. A much more "depressing" film in a way, depicting the fall of a bunch of Superheroes from their hey-day, and strikes elements that could be of a very psychological nature as well.

What would such people be like or have turned out like if they had been such people indeed? The bads and goods among them. The reality to them being human as well, emotions, and what not.

The despair of trying to save a broken world perhaps also makes it even more depressing. This is generally the tone the film goes for and it does it well.

Add more philosophical questions and plot-themes and some small twists, and feels great to watch this film, especially when alone. It has some funny looking visuals at some points, depicted after the comics of-course, and does has that film noir feel to it running at a great pace, with enough mystery sprinkled here and there that a true superhero film-goer should appreciate for the simple fact alone that it is a completely different take to your average superhero film.

Simply a great addition to a shelf of films.

Amazing adaptation from the original Graphic Novel written by Allan Moore.
The movie is extremely loyal to the original comic by respecting each character personality, and charm, even the actors used in the film (wich are really good at recreating each character) look like if they just take them straight out of the original Graphic Novel both in dialog and physically.
Even then the movie has his fair share of flaws, the most common consist on just how a couple of scenes that are similar from the Graphic Novel can be much more violent in the movie,
when most of the time there is not a reason on why they would make them that way, the whole atmosphere in wich these scenes take place is already shocking it can transmit the feeling of how important and brutal certain moments of the movie are,
so when they finally come out and add someone chopping off the arms of someone else with a chainsaw, it quite breaks the entire atmosphere of the movie.
There are also a couple of really important moments that are removed from the original Graphic Novel.
For me personally the moments that were removed didn't really affect the flow of the film and they never really leaved me with a tasteless movie experience but i know that fans of the original novel may resent these changes made into the film just like i resent the over the top notch graphic unnecessary violence in some giving the fact that they don't stay true to the novel and,
"in my opinion" can break the flow of the experience.
ha i guess you can also take that as me being one that loved the graphic novel just as much as i loved the film.

This based off; more like an exact copy of, the graphic novel by the same name. This film did not do so well at the box office; it still made some money, just not a lot. So there was already a layer of uninterested when this came out. Eventually I got a hold of it on blu-ray; in fact it was my first blu-ray movie I got, and I was generally pleased with it. I really liked the visual style of it, the dark and grimy detail really sells it. It's just like the graphic novel pages were on the screen. Another thing I like to mention is Jackie Earl Haley as Rorscach. This is the best performance in the movie. The way he makes his character act like such a intimidating presents is amazing when thinking about how tall he is; not very. It's almost like Marv from sin city, he's a bad ass, but also a loser in a way. Although with theses great compliments I appear to be giving this film, there're some problems I'd like to address. While Rorshach is great, the other characters don't really leave much of an impression. The guy who played Mr. Manhattan I guess did okay; if he was suppose to sound completely uninterested was his goal, then he's one of the few exceptions. I mean, I just don't find the others that interesting, and the actors don't try to do anything to make them feel real at any point. The running time can be an issue as well, running at around two an a half hours long, it can be a bit dragging when the film is not entirely interesting or captivating throughout. Even if there's not a total appreciation for this film by most, I still like it, and I'm sure there's other who agree with me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Who watches Watchmen?

Watchmen is a movie based on the graphic novel written by Alan Moore and is set in an alternate reality in 1985 New York City. It attempts to deconstruct the myth of the superhero genre.

I've read the graphic novel which is multi-layered and relies on flashbacks to propel the main narrative. So I was eager when news of a film adaptation was announced. However the director behind the project is Zac Snyder whose previous efforts I didn't like.

So with that in mind I knew it wouldn't be like Christopher Nolan's take on the Dark Knight but more like an highly excitable fan boy who had got their wish to direct this movie. To be fair Zac has done well with the source material and stayed faithful however his technique of highly stylized violence and the slowing and speeding up of images can get a bit tiring and is more in style to Sin City then how I personally imagined Watchmen to be like.

I envisaged Watchmen to be realistic in it's portrayal of it's characters and in the novel you assume the only character with genuine superpowers is Dr Manhattan yet in the movie every fight scene is hyper real with characters exhibiting superhuman strength which is confusing to say the least. This is a minor quibble.

The film is long and still manages to omit exposition necessary for the plot and requires inferences which is difficult if you haven't read the source material. For example Hollis Mason is introduced and it is never explained that there are two Nite Owls. Why introduce the character when he is necessary in the comic as he is killed in the novel and is part of Dan's desire to return to the world of superheroes but this doesn't happen in the movie. It's unnecessary.

Minor criticism's first. The only error in casting for me Is Ozymandias's character. He is supposed to be an Olympian style Adonis like figure who is the smartest man in the world but comes across as a bitter public school boy who lost on University Challenge.

The one other omission from the novel which I can't go into as it would reveal too much is the absence of a tentacled foe. I can see why this is omitted but in the comic the secrecy of this operation is more because of what it involves.

Overall I enjoyed the movie. Yes it is flawed and overlong. Some of the dialogue is clunky and Subtlety is definitely out of the window but it remains faithful to the novel and I would like to see the longer cut which would iron over any plot holes.

If you're the kind of person who gets worked up over comic book adaptations not being 100% faithful to the material then you really need a new hobby. Every aspect of the movie was perfect and the ending was great, instead of the good guys just casually beating the evil villain they then turned the whole narrative on its head and left you wondering who the good guys really were. Honestly enjoyed this far more than I ever could've expected. I have to pinch myself sometimes that we love in a time where it would be possible for a filmmaker to come this close to reproducing the graphic novel to the big screen with so few compromises. I watch this annually and i highly recommend the extended cut which has a few extra scenes and the animated version of the comic (within a comic!).

I came into it with my expectations too high. I thought there would be a big twist, like Rorschach turning out to be the killer or the whole thing literally being a joke. It's also too long and 2 much backstory. But everything else is pretty good.

Snyder not only accomplish the task of making a Watchmen film, something Terry Gilliam(Brazil, Time Bandits) failed at, but also made it a masterpiece. The story is always surprising, and there are some very funny scenes. Not something to show to kids, though. It's darker (way darker) than the Dark Knight, and contains scenes of extremely graphic and/or psychological violence that are always justified. Don't expect comforting characters and a happy end either. The characters are almost all **** (and all actors are perfect in their roles, even though none of them are really famous) and the ending... well, it's just so clever and unexpected, without coming from nowhere. And also: The soundtrack is perfect. Expand

Sadly the ending angered many fans and it would be a masterpiece without it. To be fair you can argue that the ending does the same as the source but in a different way. I will give a summary with a spoiler warning at the end of the review. Lets start at the Beginning: Watchman is a graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. It has fan and critical acclaim and is a frequent contender for best comics of all time rarely if ever missing the top 5. It is set in an alternative world in 1985 that resembles our own but also is quite different. Nixon is still President in 1985, the Vietnam war was won thanks to Dr. Manhattan but the Cold War is still there maybe even more serious. Masked Superheroes existed but except Dr. Manhattan they have no superpowers. Those were outlawed a few years before the events of the movie by a nation wide police strike. Story: After a set up that shows a bit of the history of this world a man named Edward Blake died under strange circumstances. The vigilante hero Rorschach discovers that there was more behind Blake and this leads to even more questions. Meanwhile the tensions between thee USA and Russia reach new heights and it seems a war that can end humanity is on the horizon. I stop here to avoid spoilers and have already been a bit vague. The story is excellent and entertains form start to nearly finish. The ending is the elephant in the room. While being not a mayor change in what is happening the how is ruining the movie for many. While I have not read the novel before the movie I see why. See below if you like but beware of spoilers. The visuals, effects and dedication to the source are amazing. Like I said you hardly find a better adaptation. The actors do an amazing job. I praise the whole cast and there are a lot of great moments. In this regard it is an amazing adaptation too. I think I said all necessary things I can without spoilers. Overall this is a great movie / adaptation with an ending that angered many fans. Because of this it is hated. I give a 6/10 because of the ending (Otherwise a 10/10). Spoiler warning: In the graphic novel Ozymandias let scientist design / fabricate an alien that appears in New York and kills millions with a psychic wave before it died. As planned this stopped the looming world war as mankind banned together to defend themselves against this unknown outside thread. Not a perfect plan but it safes humanity or at least gives time to solve the problems that lead to this nuclear standoff. Now to the movie: With Dr. Manhattan as seemingly 7 framed bad guy I think mankind would surrender immediately instead of mobilizing the military as they cant kill him. Even a full disintegration is a small inconvenience for him and he has god like abilities that outclass everything mankind have. As perspective: Neither the Avengers nor Justice League would be able to stop him in a serious fight. Expand

Modern SuperheroAs a deconstruction, this movie has aged fantastically given the over saturation of superhero films we've seen since its release. As a film however, it truly shines because it was made before this over-saturation set in. Modern Superhero deconstructions like "The Boys" largely exist just to reciprocate frustration with the genre's persistence. Meanwhile Watchmen was made at a time when Superhero Movies were rarer, before genre fatigue really set in. Because of this the film makes no sly nods to industry tropes or ever feels so self aware its disingenuous. instead the movie looks at the concept of superheroes as a literary archetype, and explores its implications. Unlike more modern deconstructions or parodies of the genre, it's about the actual themes of these stories, not the state of the industry. Beyond that, this is just an incredibly well written and directed film. Brimming with style and rugged charm, this movie is always enthralling and more often than not engaging. As far as I'm concerned it's still Zack Snyder's best work. Expand

The plot is fantastic and it stays pretty coherent and cohesive for its 3 hours runtime, the acting is great, the special effects are pretty good for 2009 and the costumes and practical effects are incredible. But the most impressive aspect of the film is how it looks in general. Its very dark, gritty and dirty, you can almost smell the blood and the sweat coming out of it. It wasn’tn the mid-’80s, writer Alan Moore began to imagine a world in which the superheroes and costumed crime-fighters he’d grown up reading helped shape the Cold War decades that had repeatedly brought humanity to the brink of extinction. It wasn’t a better world. Behind their masks and glowing eyes, the heroes Moore conceived and created with artist Dave Gibbons were hindered, and occasionally crippled, by the same conflicting impulses, childhood traumas, and redirected neuroses that drive everyone else. Moore and Gibbons’ graphic novel Watchmen helped redefine the types of stories superheroes could be used to tell, not just by freighting them with darkness—too many subsequent creators showed how easy that could be—but by weaving their capes and gadgets into a dense, deep narrative: a detective story played out against the apocalypse in a world so thoroughly realized that Charles Dickens would be jealous.

The same elements that make Watchmen a great book made a Watchmen film a difficult prospect. (Moore, on principle, removed himself and his name from the project, which probably didn’t help.) It’s remarkable that any Watchmen movie made it to the screen, after the years of false starts and litigation. And the one we got—directed by Zack Snyder, most recently responsible for the ably made, philosophically dubious Frank Miller adaptation 300—deserves credit for staying true to the characters, plot (up to a point), and look of the original material while still generating his own kind of energy. Sometimes that energy feels misapplied and overcranked, as the roar of the action drowns out the film’s human voices, but Snyder’s Watchmen keeps moving so assuredly, it’s nearly impossible not to get swept along.

Keeping Moore’s alternate-universe ’80s New York setting, Watchmen opens with the murder of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a long-serving crime-fighter with a late-career sideline in covert ops. (The film keeps Moore’s dark joke that electing Nixon to multiple terms is one of his world’s problems.) A masked vigilante named Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley)—the only one who didn’t hang up his disguise when the government outlawed civilian crime-fighters in the mid-’70s—launches an investigation and uncovers a much larger conspiracy, one seemingly tied to mounting nuclear tensions between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., as well as a bunch of Rorschach’s old colleagues. These include the Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman), who inherited the title from her mother (Carla Gugino); Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) a bookish, wealthy master of machines; Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), who’s since turned his remarkable intellect to acquiring wealth and power; and Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), a lab-accident-created glowing godlike being whose connection to humanity remains an open question.

There’s sometimes too much Dr. Manhattan in Snyder’s Watchmen, which often feels like a feat of engineering first, an artistic expression second. But his source material keeps him grounded, as does solid work from Crudup, Wilson, and especially Haley, whose performance evokes pity, fear, sympathy, and revulsion as he goes about his single-minded pursuit of justice without compromise. Others bring less. Given a central role, the lightweight Akerman serves as an Andie MacDowell-in-Four-Weddings-And-A-Funeral-level distraction, and Snyder isn’t always well-served by his tendency to start at 11 and try to turn up the volume, particularly in a bunch of over-the-top, bone-cracking action scenes. The time spent developing watchmen-fu would have been better invested in not blowing one of the book’s big Mars setpieces, or figuring out a better alternate ending than the one dropped in the original’s place.

And yet in the end, the film’s ambitious drive to create a dread-soaked alternate America and people it with flawed, recognizable heroes carries it along. Snyder uses grand gestures to create a sense of world-imperiling doom rooted in another era, but equally at home in this one. But he also remains willing to slow down to capture the gravity of a funeral, or dwell on a moment between old partners patching up a friendship as doomsday approaches. Moore’s touch emphasizes how messed-up and needy comic-book people would have to be to do what they do. Missteps and all, Snyder’s film gets that right, and this as well: When we look up in the sky, we don’t see a bird or a plane, but a mirror.

Watchmen is great with action sequences and an Ok story, and most of the cast over did the roles except for Jackie Earl Hallie who played as Rorschach gave the performance of his career. All the costumes were spot on from the comic book which made me happy that they at least got something perfect and so close to perfection, and the film's long running times made thing a little more difficult as the Ultimate Cut of the film reaches 4 Hours, but despite of all of the mistakes, it is a worthy comic book adaptation worth watching. For those of you unaware of the plot, it is a compelling film noir mystery thriller about a group of people who become superheroes, are then used by the US government to fight its enemies and are later discarded by the US government. One of the group was murdered and the others start investigating we he had to die.

Interesting about the back story is that both the socio-political climate and characters are well-developed and realistic. The use of superheroes by the US allowed the Sovjetunion and US to become more polarized than in our reality, making the US government far more conservative and bringing the world very close to nuclear holocaust. The superheroes all have their own unique character traits, each based on real and flawed human beings like I've met in my own life. What's most interesting about the plot of Watchmen is the way these different personalities interact with one another and how they set themselves apart from the rest of humanity.

What sets this film apart from other films, however, is an audiovisual style few people besides Zack Snyder could actually pull off. The visuals are simply breathtaking throughout the entire film and the audio adds to the atmosphere the way only a few other films can. Watching the film, I feel immersed in a surreal dream and the first time I sat glued to my chair for the entire duration because of the sheer beauty of the visuals, the interesting plot and the fascinating characters.

Maybe the graphic novel was even more compelling as the film plot-wise, I don't think anyone could have done a better job making a film based on the graphic novel. Please remember that graphic novel and film are two different media and you'll never be able to tell the entire story of a multiple edition graphic novel into a single film, however you'll also never be able to control the pacing, acting and soundtrack of a graphic novel. It is my opinion that those who didn't like this film either ignore the differences between the two different media and are frustrated by the film straying from the graphic novel more often than they would like or simply didn't get the story and lost interest due to their confusion. After seeing this film several time, I can't really find anything not to like about this film.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Funny how the Watchman morality tale was the case of art taking a life of it's own beyond the intentions of the author Alan Moore? For contrast I have read the comic and oof the author still really did write an epic backfire.

Rorschach the just man the immovable object vs the unstoppable force that is Dr Manhatten. "No compromise not even in the face of Armageddon". Which is basically not that we just survive/live, but how we survive and live matters the most. The things humans will just do to get by. Embrace the big lie of the hiding the murder of innocents for a presumed greater good. Then evil has no limits against the individual, because all that matters is the collective greater good. Watchman asks some really important and fundamental questions. How far can we go and how far should we go as a species just to survive/live on?

Oh and the film is beautifully shot, well acted for the most part, with kickass actions scenes and rounded off by a great music score.

Ozymandias' plan is to detonate nuclear bombs all over the world and blame doctor manhattan so that the world Unite against him. Poate based on a lie, but peace. Doctor manhatan leaves earth.
