I believe that people that didn't enjoy the film was for two major factors. 1. They didn't read the comic book and couldn't follow the complex story involving multiple protagonist. 2. They read the comic and expected every single detail to be included in a two hour 40 minute movie, which of course would require the movie to have been over 6 hours judging by the motion comics. Love independent and foriegn films due to philosophical content typically expressed. This film, though not perfect, was fascinating. If you pay attention to politics and the worldwide push for globalization and a NWO, this film is haunting. I went and read the graphic novel afterwards. It is, of course, better. Why make an exact copy in cinematic form? If you want an honest representation, read the novel. As a film, Watchmen was great. It was also fairly close to the novel and dead-on in many aspects. If you have the mental ability to fill in certain shoddy sections of the film, as one does when viewing/reading a comic, then it is pretty damn good. Use your brain, connect the dots, and see this. It is different, haunting, and different. Good stuff. Expand

This film suffices as a wonderful testimony on all our dreams, faults and self delusions. The world we seek to dreate is the world we have and it is really ugly and dark. There are so many references here to religion, politics, relationships, greed, hope etc. and I found it literally amazing. It brought me back to the dyas I sneaked inot see Clockwork Orange and was never the same again. It is a superhero movie as a vehicle only to shatter our smugness and should not really be in the Spiderman and Batman argument (despite Heaths brilliant part coming close to the same mayhem in us all) but I think in Watchmen we have a much grander canvas and a more unsettling image. Beyond all the technical brilliance it has a real story to tell, and you wont feel the same way again. I bought the soundrack and each song now has new meaning. Expand

At around 3 in the morning, I walked out of the theater and thought, "It was.. OK." This is to all the people who say that "if you read the comic, you'll love the movie." I say that it's almost the complete opposite. Fans of Alan Moore's masterpiece will be disappointed by the changes and by some of the casting. Speaking for myself, I really came into the theater with high hopes. I had read the comic only twice (a small number compared to the many other Watchmen fanatics), and had been psyched ever since the trailer first came out. Needless to say, I left the movie criticizing the film, even though I would never call it "bad." It just seems like the people who haven't read the comic are going to see it to gain respect points from people, or are going expecting another movie like Batman. This is not Batman; this is Watchmen, where superheroes don't exist. Real people exist, a concept that was left out of the movie adaption. Everyone's running around and doing all these superhuman things, the point gets lost that these are just ordinary people that don masks to fight crime for their own reasons. Another thing to the people that praise the soundtrack: What movie were you watching?? The soundtrack, by itself, is probably fine for any hipster's iPod. But the music in the film just felt disjointed and unnecessary (excluding Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin' "). I mean, "99 Luftballons"? That was laughable. And playing "Hallelujah" during one of the most awkward parts of the movie pulled a giggle out of the whole audience. I know that these were the songs quoted in the novel.. but numerous times, people have brought up what works in a comic doesn't always work in a movie. The soundtrack was one of those things. Please stop calling Snyder "visionary." He's made three movies, calm down. Looks like he traded story for heavy-handed punches and ludicrous fighting scenes, via slow-mo. This could've been a really good movie; the only thing that I count as a plus is that, hopefully, the film will get people to read the original comic. I won't say it's a bad movie, but it sure wasn't good. Expand

That aside, the plot of the movie was fine [Dark and gritty in a Sin City-esque way].... nothing mind blowing and actually mostly took a back seat to the individual characters themselves... but at least the story remained unpredictable to the end so that's good. Really for me the star of this movie isn't the plot, but rather two characters (even if at times they are overdone): Dr. Manhattan (his presence alone on camera commands God-like "oohs" and "ahhs") and the psycho that was Warshack, both of whom who could have warranted a movie of their own. The other masked "heroes" unfortunately were just bleh and really didn't carry the same character complexities to warrant much deep thought or attention. Definitely recommend at least one viewing... two on the other hand? That's debatable. Expand

At times however it feels like Snyder overused action sequences and gore too much. The overall message from the graphic novel was there, middle aged vigilantism, and at times kept the same brooding nature. Some scenes were altered for continuity and to make the story line look like it happened in a a matter of days.
Changing the ending, though it may appear as heresy to the fans of the graphic novel, made the Watchmen acessable to a new audience while allowing for the Film to be shorter,
The music adds to the moment and some of the montages are fantastic.
The Film ignored many of the sub-plots and tiny relationships built up in Moore's work however if you look the relationships are there; they are just not as explicitly pointed out.
All in all a very good translation only stopped from being truly fantastic by the insistence of fight sequences and gore that adds nothing to the plot and seem to be there just so those who wish to see violence do not get bored.

This movie certainly won't appease the fanboys (but what actualy does?). The most drastic change in the plot between novel and movie was probably necessary to keep the movie under 3 hours long. The pacing of the various stories does well in keeping the overall movie moving. The use of The Times They Are A-Changin to tell the tale of the Minutemen is an ingenious way to give a background to the history of masked vigilanties. Having read the novel before seeing the movie, I have to say that people who expected every page to be present in the movie are dreaming. The screenplay holds onto Moore's ideas of a lost society and anyone who is angry Moore didn't take part in this adaptation have to realize he wouldn't have taken part in any retelling of his novel. The actors do an excellent job of portraying these beloved masked crusaders and I personally think every actor was perfect for their role. If this film was released later in the year we could easily be seeing James Earl Haley nominated for a Best Supporting Actor nomination. People have to go see this movie for what it is, an adaptation to what Time magazine called one of the 100 best novels of the past 80 years. Expand

So, I won't belabour that perspective. Here's the important part of the flick you might have missed: a nerd has an office place accident which leaves him with a barrel chest, washboard abs and a large penis. Wow! I want to know which office that guy works in! Ok, he's a little short on tan, well, in fact, he is blue but, hey, I'm a nerd and I want to have an office place accident which will leave me with a physique which even Laurie Juspeczyk gawks at. This mishap near the water cooler is the quintessential superhero fodder: the nerd is, after all, Superman. Perhaps we like this because it makes us, the powerless, feel empowered. How many CEO's with a gaggle of concubines and a wad of millions in their wallets go to see superhero movies? These movies are for us, the powerless, to feel better. Only, this movie does not quite do that. If superheroes existed in the real world, then this is how it would be: we ordinary humans are, as Dr. M said, little more than termites to a superbeing. Deep stuff. If there had been less blood in this film, I would have given it a 10. The blood detracted unnecessarily from what was originally a good tale by Alan Moore et al. Expand

The violence is definitely gratuitous, but almost pointless at times. This isn't 300 you arrogant prick, learn to make a good film. Also, the sex scenes look like something out of a prepubescent wet dream. Terrible scoring (sans Philip Glass) and a lack of honesty to the actual plot and intention of the graphic novel make this film a bit lackluster. For fans of the novel, it's a must see, despite the deranged notion that the novel was about Dr. Manhattan's genitalia. For everyone else - if you enjoy superhero movies, see it. If you enjoy thrilling adaptations of thought-provoking tales of corruption and anti-heroism, this is not the movie for you. Teens will love the violence and sex, fans will love the characters, any mature being will only enjoy the very faint look at humanities ideals. Expand

Even Ozymandias, as intelligent as he is, is still just a normal human being. But the film is full of gore and violence that normal humans shouldn't really be capable of. Many of the fight scenes were a bit ridiculous because of this. They shouldn't be able to fight THAT well, or inflict THAT much damage. Also, the complexity of the ending was almost completely lost. I knew before hand that the main part of Ozymandias's plan had been altered in the movie, though I knew not how. But after watching it, I don't quite understand WHY that part was changed. The constant change in time was also severely simplified towards the end, as well, which made the entire ending lose a lot of its richness. All that being said, the movie is not bad. I enjoyed it, and I'll probably watch the Director's Cut with the scenes from the pirate comic and Under the Hood woven in. But unfortunately, it's not quite as good as it could have been, or should have been. Expand

VERY underwhelming compared to the book.

On its own, it's solid. But compared to the book...ech. Nearly all of the themes and messages were either diluted or totally wiped out, too many important scenes cut out, too rushed (I'd probably be somewhat confused midway without reading the book beforehand), parts of the narrative changed for no reason , too much emphasis on slo-mo Hollywood action which WASN'T the book's emphasis, too much gratuitous gore and sex compared to the book (its isolated moments of emphasis in the book made it stand out when it needed to), etc.

Of course, I shouldn't be surprised. The amount of content in the book is way too much for 2h40m (still pretty lengthy for contemporary films), and its narrative structure is much too complex to translate to the screen...it's true, though: Watchmen is unfilmable, both in the amount of content to show and the way in which the narrative is constructed. Unless you make it 6 hours long, you will NOT end up with Watchmen. Actually, scratch that--you'll never equal the original, no matter what.

Oh well. Snyder made a good effort.

They can't be trusted. Second, any person who is surprised to be disappointed by a film adaptation of a book needs to stay out of the theater if he or she has read the book first. Guess what. Books and films, apples and oranges. It's your fault if you can't make the transition. To those offended by sex and violence, if a movie is based on a graphic novel (which is not the same as a comic book), avoid it. You will always be offended. And finally, anyone wanting to see an action film should choose something else. This is not a turn-off-your-brain-and-enjoy-the-ride kind of romp. There's a lot to think about and the average movie goer will not want to do the mental work needed to get it. That's not to say most people are stupid, just that most won't want to work out the many philosophical puzzles presented in this film. Bottom line: not everyone's cup of tea, obviously.
