Only you can see the hard work that Warner Brothers has put into including all the suttle nuances. Those who have not read the Graphic novel, will likely feel overwhelmed, this was intended purposely. If you look a majority of these reviews both user and critic you will see those who have read the graphic novel, adored it, and those who didn't found it average. It's because you pick up the allegorical, and biblical references if you've read the novel. If you haven't they will fly past your head because you're not prepared. It's a deep movie on several layers, although sill not as deep as the book. Overall fantastic movie, don't let the ninth grade reviews who don't know what allegory or symbolism to change your opinion of this movie. Expand

They can't be trusted. Second, any person who is surprised to be disappointed by a film adaptation of a book needs to stay out of the theater if he or she has read the book first. Guess what. Books and films, apples and oranges. It's your fault if you can't make the transition. To those offended by sex and violence, if a movie is based on a graphic novel (which is not the same as a comic book), avoid it. You will always be offended. And finally, anyone wanting to see an action film should choose something else. This is not a turn-off-your-brain-and-enjoy-the-ride kind of romp. There's a lot to think about and the average movie goer will not want to do the mental work needed to get it. That's not to say most people are stupid, just that most won't want to work out the many philosophical puzzles presented in this film. Bottom line: not everyone's cup of tea, obviously. As for me, Lisa H., a Tarantino/X-Men baby is a mighty fine addition to the family. Great idea. Hope Quentin considers it. Expand

I've always been a fan of the graphic novel and consequently I understood the back-stories, histories and ideals behind the movie. However, I can also see how people who haven't read the novel could quite easily find themselves lost within the various layers and story arcs. I did find the character development not as involving as the comics, but that was only to be expected within the time constraints of a feature film. It's one of those movies that will make more sense the second or third time of watching, when you can pick up on the little intricacies that are woven into the plot. Very enjoyable if you've read the graphic novel or can stay focused for the full 160 odd minutes. A mention has to go to the brilliant performance by Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach too. Expand

Through flashbacks, we get to see how Dr. Manhattan loses his humanity to become what his is at the time of the action. as this progression continues, he loses more and more clothes. His nudity is a symbol for his lost humanity; he no longer sees the point of covering oneself. He still does it when appearing in public, but when the masses won't be viewing him he sees it as unnecessary. It wasn't just Zack Snyder wanting to toss in a guy's junk all over a film. Expand

If This movie was incredibly good but only in the sense that it was a great homage to the source material. It felt as if Snyder simply wanted to make something that would be an accompaniment to the comics, rather than a stand alone movie. If you've read the comics you will love it if not you could easily hate it. I do think they did the best job they could have possibly done, the story is simply too dense for the silver screen. The problem is that with so much of the characters back stories trimmed down and skimmed over the general audience won't connect with them and may view their humanness as hackneyed. Also the way this is marketed and the time that it came out will alienate too much of its audience. Like the reviewers I've read saying dr. Manhattan was a silver surfer ripoff. Or all the x-men and spider man fans who think they can veg-out and watch some fighting with a few jokes. Oh and all of you how say the ending change wasn't good this is not a bible and it is not blasphemy it is improvement. It ties the story together so much better it isn't a campy and it simply makes more sense. My overall take is that I will probably tell people not to watch it for fear they will spoil their appetite for "the watchmen". I think if the read it first their hunger for the film will be voracious. I gave it a 9 because i felt it was the best transition possible except for the super long directors cut with the black freighter edited back in, but that would definitely not be for mainstream American audiences. Ultimately, you have to sit through a lengthy movie for some key scenes, but it's well worth it. Someone needs to tell the producers of comic book movies that the default comic book flick should be 1:45 minutes, not 3 hours. You aren't making Schindler's list here, your filming a schoolboys daydream. It ISN'T important, and doesn't deserve 3 hours.

Many classic movies are not received well on release, but rise in critics' appreciation with the test of time - Watchman may be one of these films. I took a group of teenagers to the screening and figured I'd be bored to sleep. Instead I found a morally, intellectually, and (surprisingly) emotionally challenging SciFi flick, with great plot, action, humor, character development and cinematography. Even the sex and ultraviolence were (mostly) not overdone and appropriate within the context of the story and graphic novel form. It was with relief when I saw highly respected critics such as Roger Ebert also got it - and my kids rated it a 10! Caution: not recommended for teens unable to handle R rated material. Expand

Even the ending change (I read the Wikipedia entry for it) is acceptable. Butler does an amazing job of adapting comics because he is faithful to the original works, adding his artistry in the amazing camera work, editing and sleekness of his movies. Personally, I would like him to be the designated comic book adapter in Hollywood, because he's so good at it. Fat chance, but a girl can dream. I did think the sex scene was a bit much, because I think the same ideas could have been portrayed without showing it so graphically. Yes it is a natural human behavior, but it's a private one! I like it that way. You can suggest it by showing faces, and limbs just as well. IMHO. Dr. Manhattan. Folks, get a grip. It's a penis, OMG run for the hills. Why is a penis so abhorrent to us when the female form is used so often and so blatantly to no such outcry? But I digress. His nudity was very in keeping with what he has become. Again, right on the money with the comic. The gore was a bit much, could have been artfully implied without actual entrails hanging from the ceiling, but again, faithful to the comic. As for the plot line of the film, I love it too. It's not the normal comic hero movie. It's an idea of what real people in hero costumes would be like. They would not be mythical, nearly perfect people who are in near perfect harmony with each other on issues of good and evil. I think Moore has a very real understanding of human nature, and it's not pretty. But it is real. I love Rorschach. Holy crap, was he perfect. I did not for one second question that he WAS Rorschach. Just brilliant. You don't like it fine. But don't bash it just because it wasn't the action flick you thought it was. Try looking into the movies you want to see, to see what they are really about, don't just take the previews word for it. The preview is not the movie, and one should not be judged on the merits of the other. Expand

people just dont want to like this movie, ask one person and theyll say its not enough like the graphic novel, ask someone else and theyll say it was too much of a direct interpretation. some people say its too long, others say it wasnt long enough. People are just really bitchy and half no attention span, thats why a lot of people didnt like this movie, i mean the acting was freakin great, people bitched that some of the characters were emotionless, BECAUSE THATS HOW THEY WERE IN THE NOVEL YOU IDIOTS. Snyder just tried too hard to please everyone, but honestly, this has to be the best interpretation of a graphic novel or comic book ever made, and before any of you even think the words The Dark Knight, yeah it was great but it really had almost nothing to do with the comics except for the character names. So if you are thinking of going to see watchmen, just be prepared for a long movie and if theres not a fight scene every 5 minutes, dont bitch about it just because you have A-D-fuckin-D

Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-changing is used brilliantly against a backdrop of comic-historic vignettes. Truly a brilliant opening. But then, as other reviewers have noted, it doesn't (can't?) really live up to this amazing opening page. Still I found it to be occasionally brilliant in certain scenes, just lacking overall coherence. Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Malin Akerman are especially good in their roles. I'm not going to comment on the story, since I'm assuming it is based on the book. It was intriguing enough, besides one random heroic scene toward the end of the middle of the movie where I was like uh, that was pointless. As far as cinematography and such, there were too many popular songs in the film, but all but one worked (I forgot which one, somethin in the middle). The sex scene toward the end was also super cheesy and I wasn't sure if the director was trying to make it atrociously bad intentionally to show awkwardness or he just failed. There is not much action for nearly three quarters of this 3 hour film. The plot of this film is very heavy handed, and thought provoking, but not for everyone. The writing of this movie is some of the best I've seen in recent years, and the acting for the most part compliments the acting excellently. I've never read the novel, but my friend who I saw it with says that they lifted most of the dialog directly from the book which was a great idea. No need to reinvent the subject matter that was portrayed so perfectly in the book. Overall, this is an excellent movie. I took away one point because the plot is a little dialog heavy and may bore certain people (but not me, I was refreshed actually to the usual superhero popcorn drivel) and there are a few cliche plot twists although they were slightly appropriate. Anyone who hasen't read the comic, however, might be a little confused about the opening sequence, which shows all the events prior to the present setting, which are all explained in the comic series. The only reason Snyder decided to do it that way was because the movie would have been way too long. The action is intense and satisfying, the dialogue is perfectly portrayed as in the comic, and the visuals are breathtaking. There is alot of slow-mo, however, but It's used in all the right places, and it adds a lot of visual eye-candy. The only thing I didn't like about the movie was the makeup department. Overall, an enjoyable enough adaption and probably as close as a movie is going to get to the source material. Some scenes work a lot better than others: Dr Manhattan's origin sequence is fantastic as are Rorshach's jail sequences. I actually enjoyed the ending which deviates somewhat from the source material as personally I don't think the graphic novel's ending would have worked on screen. Other moments didn't work at all and drag the movie down quite a bit, specifically Snyder's over the top gore and poorly inserted fight scenes as well as the most awkwardly staged sex scene ever filmed. Both of these elements jar with the rest of the movie which has enough moments of greatness to make it worthwhile. The soundtrack has the same problem in that when it works, it works well, and when it doesn't, it fails spectacularly. I understand it was in keeping with elements of the graphic novel but I don't think it was a good choice (oh, and to the reviewer who commented on the 'weird' cover of Hallelujah... thats actually the original version..). The cast vary pretty wildly with a standout being Jackie Earle Hayley who turns in a great, great performance, while others barely register at all beyond looking like their characters. Some of the dialogue lifted directly from the graphic novel just doesn't work when read aloud so I wouldn't say the fault is with the script. Despite its disjointed nature, its a movie well worth seeing provided you're not expecting a typical superhero movie. Just don't expect it to be brilliant. Expand

I find it interesting that many of the negative reviews seem to be inconsistent with each other; one review may say CGI sucks while the other says its awesome, or one says music sucks and the other says its awesome. Normally, when a movie really sucks, the people generally agree on the suckiness. That being said, I thought it was a great movie that wove an interesting tale of "super-heroes" and their backgrounds into an over-arching characterization of life, the universe, and everything. There are many things going on and it may be difficult for some to follow but I thought the sequences and timing of most of the scenes worked really well into weaving all the stories into one. I think that the alternate reality 1980s was depicted well with some iconic 80s imagery as easter-eggs. I think the majority of the music was very capturing and well suited for the emotion and texture that was being conveyed. I think the representation of "super-heroes" from the 1940s was done very well. I don't think that slo-mo was over used because I can only recall two scenes that used it (although there are probably more). Obviously, if one is looking for a something specific they will see it predominantly whereas if you look at the bigger picture, you will ostensibly get the bigger picture. This movie is violent....and it should be. The scenes with extreme violence carry a message meant to be attached to a character or group of characters; these messages include: helplessness, superiority, survival, humanity, justice, evil, reality, and confusion. This movie is not for everyone but it stands very well on its own. I think this movie is nowhere near similar to Sin City or 300. This is a different class that deserves a view from a wide range of audiences that are looking for a different view of our past, present, and future (in science fiction terms.). Expand

It's definitely not a perfect film, a couple aspects/scenes are pretty bad. Despite the almost three-hour length, the ending still felt rushed, and in the process, I feel that it lost some of the emotional impact that the book had. I had heard a lot about how bad Silk Spectre and Ozymandias were, so I went in with pretty low expectations for their characters. Their performances weren't as bad as I expected, but they definitely didn't have the emotional depth of the original characters. That being said, the film also has several brilliant moments and some great acting. The Comedian is great. I wish he were in it longer. He really is able to capture Blake's personality. Ditto for Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan, who are both perfect. The latter is a cgi character, but is given so much depth by Crudup's performance. My favourite part of the film is Manhattan's brilliant scene on Mars, when he is recounting his life. Had the entire film stayed on the same level as this scene, it would have been a masterpiece. On the other hand, their were many un-needed moments. The violence was made a bit too graphic for the material. Made with all the finesse of a good horror movie, the action is portrayed more graphic than it even needs to be to be realistic. While many movies such as Sin City were able to go into graphic detail and violence, it was handled tastefully. In Watchment, it was the pure opposite.
