Lightweight but good fun. Richard Grant and Julian Sands give good performances. Elements of the movie have not aged well, from cheap effects to stereotyped minor characters.

This should be a silly movie but it is really entertaining, made with passion and the main actors deliver a great performance. I have a soft spot for B movies and this one won me over easily. I have a soft spot for B movies and this one won me over easily. It is a horror movie with supernatural elements. The story starts in Boston in the year 1691. The witch-hunter Giles Redferne has captured a Warlock (male practitioner of witchcraft aka male witch) who is sentenced to death for his crimes including murder. But because hell interferes the warlock is set free and escape through a portal. Giles does not want to let him escapes and follows him. Both end in the modern times in Los Angeles and this is the start of a grim adventure as the Warlock has a bigger plan. Like I said it should be silly but work well. I was invested and entertained by the movie and the story. It is no Godfather or Shakespearean play but this is not necessary for a smaller movie. I value the entertainment and circumstances. I would never set Hollywood standards to smaller movies as this would be unfair. Also the humor works quite well and we have a lot from Giles being far out of place and unfamiliar with the modern times. Bonus for the climax and smart ending. Wish all characters would put this much thought into solutions especially in horror movies. Now to the actors. A lot of my enjoyment comes from 3 actors who gave an amazing performance. Firstly Julian Sands as Warlock. He is such an evil and enjoyable antagonist. He nails is role and puts a smile on my face. Secondly Richard E. Grand as Giles Redferne. He is also enjoyable and delivers the role of a hero thrown in an absolute unfamiliar situation. Thirdly Lori Singer as Kassandra. She is draw into this adventure and handles it well. Great performance. Those three made this really enjoyable. I want to praise Richard Kuss as elderly Mennonite and Mary Wonoriv as medium from the rest. Small but memorable roles. The special effects are a bit mixed but work for me. For B movie standards and with this budget I will say they were good. The costumes and make up are acceptable bur I must warn you that they aged not well for others (Again I say it is O.K for this kind of movies). The rest was history. It was a movie that flopped at the box office but became more popular later on on VHS (old form of video recording before DVDs). So 2 sequels were made. Overall this was an enjoyable movie for me and I did not expect it to work. A solid recommendation for B movie lovers. Expand
