Know it is stupid to get upset over "critics" opinions on anything. Especially when their careers are just them farming for hate clicks with maximum condescension.
Wanted to write a review despite never doing so just to support this film against those being negative for the sake of being negative. It's does exactly what it promises in the trailers. if you like extremely cheesy action movies, you'll probably have fun. That's all there is to it. Has flaws, isn't doing anything new, but it knows it's inspirations well enough to make it competent in my opinion. I Will definitely be adding it on the rotation of holiday films to throw in the background with friends.
As unlikely as it is, there was enough there that I wouldn't mind a sequel. David Harbour was fun and honestly I just want a film that is 90% Santa giving lumps to those on the naughty list. So please go see if you have a chance!

I wouldn't say this sets a new bar for action movies or even call it a great movie. That said it is the PERFECT Yule action flick; Disengage your brain, have a few brews, and enjoy. There is a plot that isn't THAT plotholey, is genre aware and is delivered with a suitable mix of straight lace and comedic acting that prevents the movie from veering too far into straight up action vs farce, it also "homages" from different movies (die hard 1 and 2 most prominently) but mixes it up enough to not be a rip off / parody. TL;DR - Had fun, worth a watch at xmas. Expand

This was pretty fun and the action was surprisingly pretty decent. Definitely 20-30 minutes too long in the middle and takes a little too much time in set up mode.

Favorites: Santa Thor, a fierce Nordic warrior. Not so favourites: The actor was miscast as both Trudy, the young girl, and Jason, the father. He was so uninteresting and dull. Though the actor appeared to be closer to nine or ten years old, she initially gave me the unpleasant sensations of a four-year-old. When the action started and she abandoned the toddler schtick, I liked her a lot more. Also, why do heist movies continue to feature massive amounts of cash? Anyway, fantastic fight scenes and fantastically cartoonish bad guys. And David Harbour is always a hit! Expand

The story starts with the real Santa Clause. He is disillusioned and burned out as Christmas is now just about greed. Be it bigger and bigger present, people just wanting cash and abandoning all the other values of the holiday. However this time will be a Christmas unlike anything else he experienced in over 1000 years he is doing the job. In a secured estate the ruthless and deceptive matriarch Gertrude Lightstone invites her family for the Christmas celebration but other people have more sinister plans. I stop here but if you watched the trailer you know what will happen. The story works and is entertaining. It is like I said not art but it never tries or even needs to be. It is just fun entertainment. I admit that it has a few lengths and not all jokes work (but it hits more than it misses). But overall the package is nice. I must warn you that it is a bit gory. A friend often looked away during some scenes. The action and fights are top notch and fun to watch. The cast is decent to good. Main actor David Harbour is perfectly fitting the role as Santa Clause and action hero with an interesting past. For the others I like Alexis Louder and Alex Hassel who are really good but the hidden gem is Leah Brady. The rest delivers but I have to admit they are a bit too much stereotypical. Especially the antagonist John Leguiazmo who I fully enjoyed I can see hated by others for this. Bonus for Home Alone references and giving a bit to think about the meaning of Christmas. Overall this is a fun no brains movie I recommend. Like I said it is not art but don't needs to be to entertain. Bonus knowledge: If you think the idea for Santa Clause is ridiculous think about the following as he is much under powered in the movie. To archive his feats of bringing all children presents (or coal) in 1 evening he needs powerful magic or time / reality warping powers. He can teleport (through chimneys), is omniscient (To know who was good or bad), can carry probably ten-thousand tons of present, talk to animals, is ageless, never been seen and more. Most superheroes cant match this skill set or power level. Expand

David Harbour was definitely never someone I ever thought of to play Santa but his performance was outstanding; I liked the more relatable portrayal of Santa as someone who has problems, who gets depressed, who sees how the world is realistically, and isn't just all jolly and happy but still has that jollyness and David Harbour portrayed all that perfectly. Beverly D'Angelo, Leah Brady, Edi Patterson, and Alexis Louder gave great supporting performances. The costumes especially Santa's suit was excellent. The makeup and hairstyling was superb especially on David Harbour. Definitely would love a sequel. Expand

If you’re going to remake Die Hard……don’t. T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except for the group of mercenaries that show up to rob the estate of a very wealthy family. Only one manIf you’re going to remake Die Hard……don’t. T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except for the group of mercenaries that show up to rob the estate of a very wealthy family. Only one man can save the day and that man is John McClane......oops sorry, no that man is Santa Claus. Yes, the criminals are unfortunate enough to show up just as Santa Claus (David Harbour) is delivering presents. Santa, who after many years delivering presents to increasingly greedy and selfish children has grown weary of the job and is in some desperate need of rediscovering the true meaning of Christmas. And if he has to smash a few bad guys heads in to discover that well then welcome to Violent Night.

Violent Night is violent and it’s set at night. If you expect any more than that, well then you’re probably going to be disappointed. My expectations were too high for this and yes it’s a little unfair to compare Violent Night to Die Hard but then again this is basically a half-hearted attempt at a remake. But you can’t remake Die Hard, it’s just not possible, there’s been four sequels trying to recreate the first one and they’ve all failed spectacularly. Sorry guys, substituting McClane for Santa Claus sounded good on paper but the result is far from a violent delight. John Leguizamo is hardly Hans Gruber. The scenes and dialogue straight up lifted from Die Hard will only remind you of what a good Christmas action movie is.

The only good thing Violent Night got right was the casting because David Harbour as the drunk pissed off Santa was perfect. There was more potential there that ends up being completely wasted. Just a shame the movie itself wasn’t better. Violent Night is a dragged out, boring action movie not worth freezing yourself to sit through. That’s right, yet again I unexpectedly got the 4D experience in another Odeon cinema. Seriously lads, why try turn the 6 people who showed up to Violent Night into icicles? That hardly seems like a good way to get people to come out to the cinemas.

Violent Night is a piss-poor Die Hard remake with a dash of Home Alone thrown in the mix in the desperate attempt to create something entertaining. So many Christmas references and puns, not to mention all the creative was to kill the bad guys with all the festive decorations. Christmas lights, tinsel, sharpened candy canes, they’re all in there. There was a good idea here but badly executed.

Clearly my expectations were set far too high so if you are planning on seeing Violent Night this Christmas, be sure to lower those expectations as much as possible and hopefully you’ll get more out of it than I did. Recommended for anyone looking for a mindless action flick. Or you could go ahead and book yourself a ticket for Die Hard and/or Home Alone in the cinema. Most cinemas will bring back the classics during the Christmas season so pick a cinema that will actually turn on the heating and enjoy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fun movie to watch with probably not most of the family, seriously though when I went to the movies I saw a concerning amount children. Parents do not be fooled by Christmas aesthetic this movie it is very gory, which I don’t consider a flaw but you know kids. Ok but to the actual movie, the movie itself is what I would say above average. The story although some plot holes was good. Nothing revolutionary but by no means bad. The action I overall enjoyed and was impressed how they incorporated the Santa magic and Christmas theme. The comedy was stronger in the stunts aspect but the one liners were pretty decent. Acting was overall good with the exception of the small girl in the beginning. (I will go over in nitpick section) Spoiler alert! (What I wish they explored)
There is one thing I wish that I wish was but more explored in the movie but maybe to others it was better left mysterious. I’m talking about the backstory they gave Santa. In the movie he was an ancient warrior wielding skull crusher to pillage and raid. I was hoping that the movie would explore how he turned into Santa and got his powers. Some Nitpicks, still spoilers
In the beginning of the movie when the little girl opened her arms to scream it looked kinda robotic.
When they were doing the home alone reference there was some movie logic with the slingshot not breaking to the weight of a dumbbell heavy enough knock the women down.
The last nitpick I can think of is what happened to Sugar Plum or the woman mercenary that hacked opened the vault. Unless she was killed offscreen there’s still just a mercenary alive. I wouldn’t be surprised if I missed some others who I didn’t see die.

Overall a good movie that was worth the watch.

It's that simple. It's that joyful, and it's been made with actors that are good enough to have fun with the concept whilst never cheapening the experience, and production and direction that keeps the movie firmly in the 'A' category, when the 'B' movie sensibilities could easily have dragged things down.
In short, the movie is excellent. If you want to watch Die Hard at Christmas and someone says "it's not Christmassy enough" then this is your comeback.
Ho ho ho, indeed!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Violent Night tells the story of a complicated hero who plans to steal from a privileged family of thieves. That's not how you remember the trailer? Watch the movie and tell me I'm **** wrong. Mr Scrooge, played by national treasure John Leguizamo, assembles a team of working class thieves to steal--Ocean's Eleven-style--from war criminals and thieves. But this plot really plays second fiddle to some of the most satisfying fight scenes of the year. On the spectrum of choreographed fight scenes with the Matrix, Sherlock Holmes, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on one end and Stray Dog and You Were Never Really Here on the other, Violent Night sits comfortably on the Slapdash/Bar Brawl end. Save for Posterity Most of the kills are body horror, shriek-inducing, falling out of mouths like dominoes dropping, unexpected, unasked for. I was tempted to rank the deaths of the various victims of Santa, but I think that much like X or Jurassic World, each individual is going to find their yummiest murder on their own terms. There are a variety of send ups to the Die Hard and Home Alone franchises, but everything is dialed up to eleven in terms of violence. The premise of Santa's power scaling is that he's sort of like a superhero, so he can withstand a lot more abuse than the regular guy (falling out of windows, off roofs, getting walloped in the face with canes and the butts of rifles, etc.), and when he hits you, you can fly through walls. David Harbour does an admirable job taking a beating in this movie, and really is there a kinder man you would want to watch have the **** kicked out of them? He boards the paintrain with the same painted acceptance as a child who has recently gathered that there is no exit from the rollercoaster at the top of the hill. Santa's relationship with Mrs Claus is oddly sweet and pure. The movie is a lot of things, but it is not raunchy, which allows for Santa to retain a little bit of class even as he terrorizes the gang of do-gooders who are trying to liberate the world of this awful tyrant. David Leitch, one in the same as Bullet Train's director, has done a fine job of critiquing the holidays in perceptive ways. Mr Scrooge's Rashomon-meets-Joker-style storytelling is haunting my dreams in every moment that isn't taken up by watching Wednesday's Rave'n Ball dance. Did he really push that old man down the stairs? Is that why Santa didn't visit again? Why did Santa condemn all the rest of Scrooge's family when only he was responsible? Why didn't Santa try to save THAT guy on Christmas that year like he was doing for that sweet nepotism baby in this movie? When Santa tries to obfuscate with the nepotism baby when asked about why he clearly doesn't give a **** about 90% of the world population when distributing presents, he gives the most unsatisfying of answers, "I come to those who need me." I call **** bull**** and so does Scrooge, buddy. Expand

I don't care what anybody says this is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time the characters are funny the fact that they gave Santa An Origin story and all the characters feel very flushed out and those Home Alone references are perfect honestly I would almost consider this a prequel to Home Alone and some weird and twisted way anyway it's worth watching at least once but a fair warning if you don't like home alone you won't like violent night because they virtually have the same idea just kind of switched up a bit because just like Home Alone there's quite a bit of violence only with more blood and gore and guns! But if you do like home alone you're going to have one hell of a time with this movie so do yourself a favor and go watch it Expand

I found this a great alternative for a Christmas movie. Over the top silliness with some good humour. Home Alone for adults.

If you ever this movie expecting a Santa Claus that kicks ass and have a sense of humor, your in for a treat. Super action packed, funny, violent, silly, very well filmed, interesting turn for anything Santa related as far as any movie ever and it works. Very enjoyable. It's the Christmas movie to have a beer with. While not perfect by any means a pleasant surprise. The acting is as silly as the movie itself and it fits perfectly. I recommend this movie, especially during Christmas. Expand

It features David Harbour as the real Santa, who also happens to be human. On his Christmas Eve deliveries, he ends up encountering a group of mercenaries who are holding a rich family captive (headed by a wonderful Beverly D'Angelo). Being a satire, there are a few moments of humor and plenty of dialogue in the early scenes. Santa's first fight is almost completely in the dark, so it's hard to tell what's happening. His subsequent encounters are even more violent, but the most enjoyable sequence features booby traps à la Home Alone. This film doesn't have any elements to make it a holiday classic, but it's got sufficient satirical energy and snappy fight sequences to counteract the traditional Hallmark releases. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A total mess of a movie. Nothing but a hatchet job by hack Hollywood writers stealing from older films. I lost count of the number of movies Violent Night rips off... Bad Santa, Home Alone, Die Hard, Silent Night Deadly Night, The Ref, Christmas Vacation. The writing and direction is so lazy, they don't even try to disguise the plagiarism, from stepping on nails stuck in glue to stomping on ornaments in bare feet, to mishaps on a ladder. This movie doesn't know what it's trying to be - family comedy, cute caper, schlock horror, feel good movie. It switches from one to the other in the same scene sometimes. The story's gimmick is that this is indeed the real Santa Claus, except there is nothing "Santa" about him other than the beard and the suit. He's heavily tattooed and was formerly some kind of Viking warrior. Huh? He doesn't even know how the whole Santa thing works, which implies he sort of fell into the role by accident. But there is never any explanation about this. The only lore you get is St. Nick on some medieval battlefield with his beloved hammer. The main couple isn't believable at all and the writers give them some manufactured relationship drama that is simply mentioned in a single line so that their daughter has a reason to Christmas wish them back together. Except they're already together. Who wrote this, high school students? And Beverly D'Angelo is completely wasted. I guess she got a good paycheck. I'm glad I didn't go to the theaters for this train wreck and watched it on Peacock. Expand

O filme força muito na violência boba. É como se fizessem situações estilo "Esqueceram de Mim" só que com sangue, machucados e violência. A comédia é boba e poucas piadas funcionam.

I assumed this was a horror movie for some reason, and was very disappointed with the super basic story and script filled with cheesy xmas themed one-liners. David Harbour does an okay job, but overall the characters were thin and inconsistent. The action scenes were shot very cheaply so there's a lot of edits which makes it all much less compelling. The film begins with an exhilarating serious scene: Santa Claus throwing away gifts when he finds Amazon packages under the Christmas tree (will it ever be included in the Prime Video catalog?). And it ends with an unpredictably magical twist. In the middle a Thor double breaks in who behaves like Deadpool (Leitch is among the producers), enjoying the cynical irreverent, desecrating "massacre" of the couple of classic movies mentioned by the director. "A schizophrenic and multipolar work ... which, for the eagerness to please everyone a little, can only make the joy of many but also the annoyance of as many"(Matteo Vergani).

All of the right pieces were here to have a spectacularly gory and hilarious sendup of
holiday/family/action movies but just kept hitting the wrong notes and beats more often than not. It is at least mildly entertaining throughout, occasionally very entertaining, and even more occasionally funny. Unfortunately, it is more cringey and tacky than anything else and between the killing scenes I just wanted the film to end.

Fun movie. Had a pretty good idea of what the movie was going to be going in and it’s what you expected but still a good time. Very violent as the title suggest and good acting, but it was cliche in moments but nonetheless. A good time

Just a dumb fun action/comedy. You get exactly what it promises in the trailers; an ass-kicking Santa Claus. If you just switch off your brain and don't think too hard about this movie, I guarantee you'll have a blast.

There are too many elements at play, too many themes and genre mashing, that it loses structure and impact or anything emotionally weighty to grab you. Some of the humor hits solidly, but when you get to the action sequences, they don't hold much weight like Santa's hammer. You have to suspend reality and any logic in its entirety to have fun as a viewer, but I guess that's the point. Worth a watch, but nothing we need to revisit every holiday season.
