I had no idea about the original series, but I liked this one a lot. The jokes are sometimes gross, but hillarious if you accept this kind of humor. One of the best comedies seen recently.

When the family vacation turns into a nightmare!

Having not seen any previous films in this series, I had nothing to compare with it and to blame for. Though I have seen many similar films, but it was not as bad as they say. In this kind of theme, the basic storyline always remains same, the remaining parts like the characters, locations and the diversions in the story developments are the key. I think they did that decently, the two new directors who also penned the screenplay.

Well, this is the story of the Griswold family of a couple and their two teen sons. After realising his family is spiritless with the normal life, the husband surprises his wife and the children to go a vacation. The trip is supposed to have fun, but they find hard to come along in a single mood as a family. Meanwhile, their journey begins to face many hurdles, though they are not giving up. So how memorable their adventure becomes is what unfolds in the remaining section.

The cast was good. Both, Ed Helms and Chritina Applegate was impressive, though the film is not laudable. Not all the jokes, but some of them were really cool and most of them were adult stuffs. Yep, this is an R rating film, not a family film, despite the impression you get from its posters. So for the grown ups, this is not a bad film to give a try. I can't suggest or reject on the merit of its previous installments, because I've already given the reason. People like me can definitely have a good time with it.

Fun faithful follow up to the originals.
Really skeptical at first but ended up laughing my way through it.
It's full of juvenile humor but it all just works.
I hope they do a sequel.

There are a lot of awful experiences they had in the movie that make laugh and laugh and laugh but at the end, you'll realize that this is a perfect family story that every member of a family must watch. The lesson that I've learned? is this "We may have war between our Father or Mother or our children or brother/sister but at the end of the day, billions of people in this world cannot replace them. No one can. We need to live them with love, respect and fun at the same time." Enjoy watching! Expand

There are definitely some overlap of the same types of moments in both films. However, this has a lot more of the typical Hangover type comedy of today. I found it hilarious from start to finish. There were very little down times of no laughing but those moments generally served as a great bit of exposition on the family, their troubles, and what everyone is thinking. In the end you have to know that this is a very potty mouth type of movie, which is fine by me, but if you don't want there to be dirty jokes, and sometimes extremely childish jokes then you might not like this. But if you are up for the type of humor found in 40 Year Old Virgin, Hangover, and Anchorman you will get a lot of enjoyment out of this movie. Expand

Helms is one of the funniest men in Hollywood today and never really gets the recognition he deserves, always being a member of the pack, but he truly shines in one of his few stand alone roles. Twenty years after the original Vacation, Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) wants to relive his vacation to Wally World with his own family, and as expected, nothing seems to go as planned. Helms was truly hysterical and in my opinion easily outshines Chevy's performance in the original film, but Helms isn't the only star of note in this film. 11 year old Steele Steebins almost steals the show as Kevin Griswold. From beating on his older brother to his perfectly timed one liners, this kid was absolutely hysterical, and has a bright future ahead of him. Together with Helms and a classic story this movie had me laughing so hard, there were tears in my eyes. Often times when companies decide to remake classic films, they are little more than a farce of the original, but in the case of Vacation, the remake overtake the original by leaps and bounds. Simply put this is the funniest movie I have seen in a couple of years. I thought it would be good, but it went far beyond all expectations, and is now our latest must see movie! Expand

Sure, some of the scenes are stupid, but that's to be expected from pretty much any comedy. I came out of it thinking, "I'm probably going to buy this one when it comes out on Blu-Ray." - To the people who are bashing it and giving it ridiculously low ratings, I'm fairly sure nothing would have made you happy. You likely hate reboots in the first place, and find yourself too elite to laugh at "potty humor" and "profanity." Get over yourselves, "movie critics." It's bad enough that every movie review we're forced to digest is already biased due to your preconceived notions and the mood you were in at the time. In fact, you should preface your reviews with how you felt that morning, so that we can take them with the appropriate amount of salt. The movie was good, it was funnier than anything else that's been out this year, and it's worth a watch in the theater. Check it out! Expand

But that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Hell, I laughed more to this than to any of the recent Adam Sandler movies. Well, that’s not saying much either.

National Lampoon’s Vacation revolutionized the 80s comedies. So its natural for Hollywood to do what it does best, which is milking the **** out of the franchise, between 1983 and 2015 there are total of six Vacation movies, and judging by their reviews the qualities took a severe dip after the original. American pie, anyone?
But the stories for all of these films are basically the same, a family that goes on a vacation that goes terribly wrong. A simple enough premise, which leaves the films’ quality solely based on their executions.

Now, before I get any further, I am aware that this new installment of Vacation is not doing so hot in theaters. With an embarrassing 29% on Rotten Tomatoes the last time I checked, this at first glance appears to be just another cash-garb on top an already overdone, stayed-passed-its-welcome franchise. The Hangover movies, anyone? But hey, it was either this or Pixels, and I swear Billy Madison is not getting any more of my money.

But back to what I was saying, yes I am aware that the movie has received some pretty bad reviews. So I went in with a very lay back attitude and expected very, very little from it. The theater that we walked into was empty. Let me repeat that so you can understand. On the opening day the theater was empty. That just confirmed my expectation even further. And then I sat through the trailers and the regal cinema train ride and the movie started and TO MY SURPRISE, my first laugh – I remember this very distinctly because I timed it – came at the 4 minute mark, that’s right ladies and gents - 4 freaking minutes into the movie I was not grinning not chuckling but downright laughing out loud.

And then I was like, is it my intelligence? How was I liking a movie that the majority of the sane moviegoers hated? But as the movie went on, I began to realize that maybe – just maybe – there’s more to the movie than what people give it credit for. Sure, it’s dumb and some jokes and downright offensive and some of the laughs are very thrown in there and just didn’t feel appropriate, it manages to take all of that very non-seriously. And I love comedies that know it is just some product to make people who have nothing to do with their life giggle and have a good time without being all high and mighty about it. And Vacation worked for me precisely because of that. There was a part when Ed Helmes character said something like, screw the original vacation the reboot will stand on its own. Of course, it was part of a conversation about the upcoming family vacation rather than the original movie but it was a very flat out wink to the audience that says “Hey we’re just doing what we do so take it easy” and I appreciated that. Simple, dumb, ridiculous, fun. And with the low expectations I had, this was exactly what I wanted and then some.

I admit, I have not seen the original, so maybe I would’ve been much more critical if I did. But hey, I didn’t see it so I could judge this movie purely from a silly comedy point of view without the nostalgic factor playing a part. Which I think is what a lot of people who dissed them movie seemed to have done. I mean it’s understandable; their childhood memories of a classic are tarnished by this piece of **** like WTF? But for me, stepping aside from the nostalgia for a moment and without judging a film that doesn’t even take itself that seriously and tone down the harsh attitude and unreasonably high expectation that reboots tend to generate – which I don’t understand why at all, I mean Total Recall anyone? Or Robocop? Reboots are baaaaad. Reboots are evil. But put aside all that and simply judge it as a dumb family road trip comedy, it is…still pretty dumb but definitely deserve more recognition than people are giving right now. The stars had amazing chemistry, some of the jokes were predictable but solid, and the whole slew of celebrities cameos made this journey very fun. Spoiler alert - when certain someone from the Walking Dead popped up I just lost it. Just for that alone, the fact that so many actors and actresses are willing to be part of this classic franchise regardless of its potential bad quality shows their love and appreciation for the movie, and despite all of its silliness, maybe we should appreciate it more as well? Just food for thought.

It’s not a perfect movie, hell, far from it, BUT, is it so horrendous that you have to stay away? Most definitely not, in my opinion, this movie was funnier than both the Hangover 2 and 3. So before I go check out the original Vacation, I will say this: go in with the right attitude and you’ll be surprised by what you’ll find.

Expect little, gain a lot... kinda.

The original Vacation movies were a huge part of my youth. Was very sceptical about a reboot/follow up/studio rehash and I'm not a huge fan of Ed Helms. However, watching this, (initially through my fingers expecting a cringe-fest) I actually saw past the lack of Griswaldy-ness (yep) and genuinely liked the film as a standalone comedy. Christina Applegate is excellent, the two children are mostly funny and not slightly annoying and Chris Hemsworth's cameo is simply hilarious.

It's only really Ed Helms who doesn't get my vote as Rusty but on the whole, it's a decent comedy with a few laugh out loud moments. If you take off your 'Fan Of The Originals' hat and see through the thin plot, lack of Griswaldy-Ness (again), OTT toilet humour and the use of too much swearing then you can expect to gain an hour and a half's worth of serviceable entertainment.

And lastly, the nods to the original films are well spaced although the movie does depend on them to remind you this is the Griswalds we are supposed to be watching. And it's still kinda sad to see Chevy looking so old and being shoehorned in for the authenticity of the title, but, it made me feel nostalgic seeing him in this so I guess it's a good send off for his character. Now, back to the original films, where's my Wally World cap?

Reminds me a lot of my own family and the kind of dumb, stupid stuff we had to suffer through.

I don't consider this a reboot, this is a sequel to a film. It makes the clearly apparent via characters and story line. Young Rusty is now a man with his own family and his own problems and he attempts to revive his family through a family vacation to the place he so fondly remembers,

It may not be a National Lampoons film, but it's still great on it's own merits. All the haters are just turds with no lives and looking for something to complain about. Out of all the movies that have been shown in 2015, this one does not deserve the hate it gets.

I love the original Vacation series, even the ill-received Vegas Vacation, and even though I had low expectations for the newest installment in the series, I was looking forward to a new Vacation movie. Boy was this a letdown. This time around, Rusty decides that he is going to take his family to Walley World before it closes forever, and Rusty promises that this time "will be different" than the first time he went to Walley World. They set off in their bizarre European car to the amusement park, and the usual Griswold madness ensues. While there are a couple of laughs to be found on this trip to Walley World, the new Vacation is just a raunchier and much more mean-spirited version of the original film, making for a rather awkward and sometimes even unpleasant viewing. A lot of the humor in the first movie was dramatic rather than situational. The jokes would happen while the scene played normally, rather than having scenes that only existed for the punch-line. It more closely resembles Adam Sandler's fun yet disappointing Grown Ups than any of the first Vacation movies. Probably the worst thing about this movie was that, in the first movie, Clark made it seem like Walley World was the greatest place on Earth, so there was a sense of urgency on the trip there, and it made us feel some sympathy for the Griswold's whenever something bad happened to them on the way. In this movie, the destination is never made out to be some spectacular place, which really didn't make me feel like it was that big of a deal when the Griswolds found themselves in a pool of human waste or going white water rafting with a suicidal tour guide. The new Vacation is much more of a misfire than a disaster, since it is a fun movie at times, but you won't find much to like about this movie, even if you're a die-hard fan of the other Vacation films. Overblown expectations and the irritating trip to the destination usually lead to their downfall. The original Vacation did a good job of capturing the worst aspects on them and presented them in a humorous manner. Well the series is back in this pseudo-reboot, and the results are hilarious.

You have to be willing to deal with vulgar humor and gross out gags, but it's certainly no harder to watch than the average R-rated comedy. Especially since the gags come at a near-constant rate and almost always land gracefully. The pacing is a little weird, but I found myself laughing constantly throughout.

The great thing is the movie does a good job of capturing family issues everyone has. Even if they are presented in a more over-the-top fashion. The bond of family is actually pretty strong here, even if it's harder to pick up on it among all of the jokes. There's some heart to be found.

The movie has some really great cameos. Be they the exciting return of character from the original, or just more brief ones like Charlie Day and Norman Reedus, it's pretty cool to see their inclusions in more one-off jokes. A particular standout is Chris Hemsworth.

With some great nods to the original and plenty of it's own unique ideas, 2015's Vacation proves to be a successful revival of the series. Well, provided you enjoy R-rated humor that is. If you do then be prepared for a lot of laughs. It's a great, modern take on the classic. While I wouldn't recommend going into it expecting it to be exactly like the original, it hits some of the same ideas in new ways. Those who followed the series and can deal with more modern R-rated humor can still be entertained. I, for one, enjoyed almost every bit of it, and wouldn't mind traveling with the new generation of Griswolds again.

"Vacation" 10 Scale Rating: 4.0 (Bad) ...

The Good: When it works, it works well. On more than a couple of occasions, I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Christina Applegate, for example, was much funnier than expected and Chris Hemsworth's scenes (while fairly brief) were also amusing. The real stars of the film though was the kids. Played by Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins, the pair stole the show when it was their turn to provide the laughs. The film also had a few good cameos, highlighted by Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo reprising their roles from previous Vacation films. The story itself wasn't a bad idea as far as remakes/re-boots go. Re-visiting the Giswalds, with Rusty now as the father figure for his own family, is a comedic premise with a lot of potential.

The Bad: Unfortunately, the film doesn't capitalize on that potential. The main issues is Ed Helms, who is hands down the weak link of the cast. Usually sufficiently funny, Helms never quite clicks as Rusty Griswald and the majority of his scenes fall flat. Furthermore, some of the cameos are almost painful to watch as some of their scenes drag on, despite not being even remotely funny. Lastly, unlike previous Vacation films, this offering lacks any semblance of heart or charm. Relying way too much on gross-out humor and random acts of violence, the film simply tries too hard to live up to it's predecessors when it should have focused more on being a solid comedy.

The film is very robotic in its delivery and there is very little passion to this project at all. The attempts at comedy usually fail and it relies far too much on gross out humour. I like Ed Helms and Christina Applegate in most roles and I would say that this films failure is not their fault but Ed Helms does not have the charisma to lead this film. Chevy Chase is one of the most well respected comedy stars of all time and Helms just cannot fill his shoes. I really can't see many people enjoying this movie even if you are a fan of the original. Ed Helms is just naturally likable and very funny. His Rusty character has a good heart and isn't afraid to show his vulnerabilities to his wife, and that adds to the movie's charm. Christina Applegate is spot-on perfect as the wife and is also very funny. I loved the characters of the older son (Skyler Gisondo) and Rusty's sister Audrey and her husband (the always-wonderful Leslie Mann and Chris Hemsworth). Charlie Day is very funny as the white-water rafting guide. The references to the original movie are also clever, and it was good to see Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo.

• CONS: I really could have done without the scatalogical humor. Too much vomit and feces humor. If you want to throw in a touch of that stuff to appeal to modern audiences, OK, I can handle it, but this movie does go overboard with that stuff. It goes on too long, and I had to look away. With a cast as immensely talented as this one, you don't NEED to resort to that kind of bathroom humor. Although it was great to see Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo, their characters deserved better writing. Same thing goes for the youngest son Kevin (Steele Stebbins). They made him too unlikeable and foul-mouthed. It's not that I mind the curse words, because I swear like a sailor, but if you're going to have those words come out of a little kid's mouth, it should be funnier.

• THE UPSHOT: If you go into it with moderate expectations, you will probably enjoy it. Don't believe the people who are giving it really bad reviews. I've seen better, but I've seen worse. I'd like to see Ed Helms and Christina Applegate in more movies, as they are both very entertaining performers.

Two things stood out when I watched Vacation - first, this film does not resemble any of the original films in any way except in its characters; and second - it is, despite its many failings, a pretty funny movie.

Those expecting to see the good clean fun of the original films will be sorely disappointed. This film, while quite funny at times, is extremely R-rated. It's almost as if the filmmakers decided that they were going to get an R rating anyways, so why not go for it. The language was astounding, even in the opening music (it reminded me a bit of Office Space in its use of explicit gangster rap). And don't even get me started on the pedophile jokes. They were everywhere, and I even caught myself laughing during the big "reveal" toward the end with a hilarious guest star. Then I turned to my wife and said, "Wait, that's not funny at all."

The film did have lots of laughs, but the story was a bit predictable. There were attempts at seriousness here and there, but they only detracted from the film rather than add any emotional strings to pull at. The kids in the film are good, but their conflict is resolved in a very strange and unfunny way. The addition of Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo was nice, but Chevy looked tired and his ol' reliable clumsy gags were forced.

Let me also say that Ed Helms is (and has always been) a superior comedic talent. If not for him, this film would be complete garbage. He gives 100% throughout and delivers a terrific performance. And yes, he even sings. Again.

So, while this movie is being killed by the critics, it is certainly worth a look if you want some cheap, profane, and gross laughs. Ed Helms is a star, even in a film as flawed as this one.

The charm of the original films lay in the fact that you were ultimately sympathetic to the Griswald's in their naive attempts to bond, making this more of a parody rather than a reboot. The tropes are worn, the dialogue is peppered with an over abundance of expletives that have no purpose, the storyline is predictable, and the humour is solid but nothing new, relying heavily on well-worn ideas - the requisite mix of toilet humour, slapstick, sexism and obligatory 80's style gratuitous nudity get laughs in the moment, but nothing particularly memorable. 5.22/10 Expand

You can see that they had a decent script. This is only evident in the bits with the kids because you don't have the "comedian" chewing and spitting scenery.

In those moments without the movie's "star," there is a funny film with a great deal of heart. Unfortunately, that bit is only about 20 minutes of the finished product.
