Mendes’ likability (and relatability) almost mirrors Amanda Bynes’ Hollywood reign during the “She’s the Man” and “Sydney White” days. Upgraded is essentially “What a Girl Wants” meets “Devil Wears Prada” with a dash of “Emily in Paris” camp. The combo makes it one of the easiest rom-coms to digest as of late. Read full review

Don’t underestimate Upgraded. The script is snappy and entertaining, the characters are colorful, Mendes and Renaux carry the romance very well, and the film is a fun escapist rom-com that gives exactly what it needs to provide us with a good time. Read full review

While actress turned director Carlson Young keeps the trains and planes running (slowly) on time, she doesn’t give us a single scene that pops, or production design that ever comes across as upscale, only little flashes of wit and fun from the veterans in the cast, who are better than the material. She’s managed a slick and shiny wish-fulfillment fantasy that is strictly downmarket — Hallmark movie chic. Read full review
