Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy) is involuntarily committed to a mental institution but her greatest fear follows her. Is it real or is it all in her head? A psychological thriller that isn't afraid to make you feel as uncomfortable as possible provoking quite a lot of nervous laughter from the audience. The twists and turns keep on coming and although not everything works Unsane is an effective horror/thriller worth your time.

Claire Foy is owning this film, giving a terrific central performance. Unsane leaves you with that uneasy feeling "what if this could happen?" A simple, focused and well executed story that only drifts into the realm of ridiculous and/or endless clichés occasionally but as with most horrors that does tend to happen in the third act. Claire Foy's performance aside, the most notable thing about Unsane is it was shot entirely using an iphone camera. Giving it an effortlessly realistic look with a touch of claustrophobia. Not something I'd like to see more of if I'm honest but for this film with the almost single location setting it did the trick. If you're looking for this week's popcorn thriller then Unsane is recommended.

Can't quite get this to a 7 because of the many twists and false endings this has in the third act, but an interesting watch with a really good performance from Claire Foy. Don't see why it needed to be shot on an iPhone, though.

The negatives: Like I said, it was a rather uneven and disjointed narrative, and some of the character choices in the film I found to be rather idiotic and ridiculous at times. Overall, it was an interesting premise that delivered well in some ways, but in others left much to be desired. Decent low-budget fare from Soderbergh, but nothing too memorable. Expand

I think if a film student made this instead of Steven Soderbergh it'd be viewed as an absolute cringefest.

The whole film has the feel of a docudrama shot on a phone (because it was) that leads to extreme close-ups of faces that distort and distend the actors. This creates a kind of surrealism and unraveling reality to the whole enterprise, though ultimately it's a bit mute. The is she or isn't she sane question doesn't seem to last very long - at least for this particular viewer. Expand

Sane But With No Logistics.

Unsane

Soderbergh has been in this street before. With well thought out conspiracies and policies and schemes, he always makes a crime look smart. But in here, it is also sadistic. There is no positivity in this arena of heeling let alone be levity. It is probably his darkest because of not the conflicts but the solutions. There are things scarred in here that would never leave haunting our protagonist and us. The first half is pretty much your usual prisoner-style adventure. Constraining the will and freedom of our relatable and absorbing host Sawyer Valentine (Claire Foy) where the testament of the excellence of Soderbergh's execution is when the irritation or annoyance does communicate with you.

The procedure how the screenplay keeps giving you enough reasons to stay is productive and also a bit avant-garde, from new camera angles installing in a room or the environment around it where Steven Soderbergh; the director, speaks expressly through it. Foy has a daunting task, to be adaptable to her audience. And since her character is completely opposite to being friendly, the content gets more compact and juicy.

Despite of what she is going through, she has her own flaws and issues to overcome and this is where Soderbergh swoops in and blends these two dilemmas in sync. The supporting cast doesn't have much to do, especially to that scale in order to stand alone. The vision is not that gore but the innuendos that leaves us with imaginations that screeches into our heart defines the apt horror-ness of the genre. The surprising element in here is the friendship developed by Foy with Pharaoh that gives us somewhat hope. Unsane is misspelled in its last act or maybe it never had that big a vision, not a dime changes at the end of this game.

This film is probably one of the biggest disappointments I've had this year. I really had huge expectations but Unsane ended up being an empty experience.
This is a film evidently inspired by class B films but unable to achieve an identity.

This is a film evidently inspired by class B films but unable to achieve an identity.

The mystery and suspense are too simplistic. The film spends 30 minutes before it really starts to have a little more sense and the truth is that if the purpose of that is for you to feel as lost as the main character, well I can say that Soderbergh was successful in it, but creating suspense, he failed miserably.

The most solid points of the film are Claire Foy's performance and the minimalist style the director used, being filmed with an iPhone undoubtedly the options were few but I think it helped a lot to portray that feeling and style of claustrophobia in almost all the shots and in all the close-ups.

The truth is that I expected much more and frankly I ended up bored and totally dissatisfied.

The movie doesn't help the problems it is addressing during its run, feeding into the stereotypes that it seems like it wants to end. The acting was quite the range in this piece, at times laughable, whilst at others being quite passable, and sometimes even good. The cinematography brought nothing new to the table, nor did any of the very generic score. Despite these gripes, I had a lot of fun watching the movie, it could be relatively suspenseful, if not predictable, whilst also being a comedy when all else fails. For some reason, Matt Damon is in this movie, although he doesn't give a great performance, nor does he feel like he couldn't have been some no-name actor, being that he was on screen for a total of about 1.5 minutes. The story is ridiculously silly, and I couldn't take anyone seriously by the time we had reached act III. Yet there is definitely some charm here.
I just don't really understand this movie, the director has proved his competentness before, and even the cast has shown that they have merit, yet they regurgitate this unintentionally funny movie. I do recommend this movie, as it is one of the better ones out there for you to sit down for 2.5 hours with your brain turned off. But, if you want to see an incisive take on the pharmaceutical industry or a takedown on society's mistreatment of the mentally disadvantaged, watch something else.

Steven Soderbergh used a few iPhone 7s with Moment lenses and a film app. He still used professional audio capture, but for the most part this was going to be an example of something that regular people could get pretty close to on their own. Unfortunately, it came out looking just a bit better than a student produced film.

Everything about Unsane is fairly average. Average story, average writing, and average cinematography at best. Claire Foy is great as the lead, but some of the other performances are a bit questionable. I did find myself at least interested in the movie and not having a bad time, but I didn't come out of the theater blown away in any way, shape, or form.
