"Unfriended", like "Paranormal Activity", explores and discovers a whole different method of bringing refreshing scares to the audience, which, despite the shallow plot, is pretty enjoyable to watch.

What makes this concept so unique is the point of view: one girl's computer screen. All the action takes place via Skype, YouTube, Facebook, Google, other popular internet-based apps, even Spotify for the soundtrack. That's interesting, but then you have to put up with the teens who constantly over-dramatize, freak out and scream a lot. The murder moments are just that, quick brutal forced suicides…even too short for today's abbreviated attention spans. It's pretty much a clever one-note notion without any surprises or suspense. Silly movie, but it has a message. Things you do on the internet stay there forever. Acting is pretty crummy and pretty predictable. Don't expect much from this except a message.

The story plays out like MTV's Catfish meets a really bad horror movie. The first half of the movie is not horror, it's young brats' Facebook and Twitters being shown, family photos, scam websites, so basically it's a teaching of the Internet plus a stupid teen love story you know you are gonna hate. The other 80 minutes is where the sh*t hits the fan, and it is... Pretty fun. Really, the jump scares and high octane thrills are well timed and just there and provide us with a better side of this already bad movie. It is a pretty good idea though, a psychopathic killer hunts down the people who shot an embarrassing video of her and she committed suicide, turns out is she alive? The thrill is nice but it could have been placed in a better movie than what we have here. I could have recommended it just for the thrills, but I review on the whole movie, and it isn't good. Unfriended is an awesome idea gone rotten. Expand

And while I wouldn't call it scary by any means, it definitely was unique just like I'd hoped. I really enjoyed some of the creative things they came up with in the film during the Skype chats. Too bad the whole point of the film was for it to be scary though, which, like I said, it wasn't really. But overall, it was just a dumb but somewhat fun film to kill an hour and a half, and also the film's unique concept and some of the clever things and ideas that were in it saved it from being as disappointing as the last horror film I saw (the highly overrated It Follows.) Personally, I'd go see this film again over that any day. Expand

It's just a bunch of stupid white teenage's that are to stupid to leave they Skype chat when some one is trying to hack them, you know turn off your computer or quickly report them, that's what most people do.

The character's in the movie are all the cliche stereotypes that it's really hard to care for them when I couldn't care less if they made it out life or not. Oh and another thing they deaths in the movie are too funny to put into words, I mean how can anyone find a fat kid getting attack by some unknown spirit, puts he's own he's own hand in a blender while he makes a funny noise and then he puts he's own chin in as well. Oh my freaking god I laughed my ass off when that scene happened and it's in the trailer for the movie. I know a lot of you think I'm sick for laughing at stuff like that and normally I'm the kind of guy who doesn't laugh at those stuff, but you got to see the movie yourself to understand what I'm saying and see what I mean.

The acting wasn't that great, the story I got to admit is very interesting and kind of creepy when you think about it but even that get's overshadowed by it's hilarious sick sense of humor...which I think it's just me.

I know people want a full detail review that I always do but not for this one as there's nothing there to think deep about and really go into detail, and yes some people may go into deep detail and might find something worth talking about, I did that but couldn't find anything. Maybe these a better movie hidden is this sh*t movie. Agree or disagree this is my open honest review and what I personal think of the film and it's modern day horror ark. I didn't find it scary, but you might, who knows.

Unfriended is a completely new concept in the genre, and it does well for what it is, however I'd argue that some parts feel a bit too empty and characters are generally undeveloped.

Yep, this is the "Skype horror movie".

It's a novel idea, making a movie that takes place entirely on a teenager's laptop screen, with all of the characters communicating via Skype video chat.

A fun and interesting twist on the found-footage genre, although not a found footage film per se it undeniably takes its inspiration from those movies.

As interesting as the concept for this movie is, it is also restrictive. The characters are one dimensional and aren't the most likable bunch which leads me to not care for their fates.

All in all it's a neat little movie that has some flaws namely being lapses in logic or common sense on the characters' behalf. If I were them I would have hung up on the Skype call: "peace out **** I'm going to sleep", and then would have shut down my laptop and have gone to sleep. Another little grievance of mine is: they're teenagers, where the hell are all of their parents? I'm just supposed to believe that all of them are alone in the house and are part of an only child club? Come on.

It's an obvious cautionary tale about the dangers of cyber bulling, the moral of which is: don't be a dick! (also don't talk to people on Skype, that **** is haunted!)

Unfriended is a Blair Witch Project for the Facebook generation. Take that statement whatever way you want.

Where it succedes is the concept. Where it totally lacks is the truehorror, jump scares and an appealing story. The acting is blended, except Sheley Hennig, which made it easier to swallow. I like it for what it tried to delivers, but to the point where it give us any good horror movie would is a long way. It's a movie you watched, perhaps enjoyed but in time you forget about it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Always loved commentaries about cyberbullying. This one is a special of a kind... but also a disappointing one. Now, the movie was immensely entertaining and creepy, with effective scary deaths and believable performances. However, I did hate the ending. So, they're all dead? That's kind of clichéd. I just wish that the ending could have been more thought out. Overall, pretty entertaining movie with a clever premise but a poor ending.

Final Score: 6/10.

The film revolves around six friends who socialize in an online chat room together and mysterious things begin to occur when an account belonging to a dead girl joins their chat. This film debuted at the Fantasia Festival last year and got a wide release this spring. I like the premise of Unfriended, the internet can be a scary thing and many people really never think about how dangerous it can really be. The whole film takes part on the computer screen of Blaire Lilly (Sossaman) so if Blaire searches something on Google or checks her Facebook we get to see it all and that’s an interesting way to shoot a film, but the film quickly starts to take on the characteristics of other horror movies with all these weird events occurring without any real reason. I thought the young cast did very well to start the film but I think you could begin to see cracks as the film went on. I like the way that tension builds up throughout the movie and it helped to keep me interested. The story got a little too crazy and when the tension builds up more and more the acting weakens. You will find out that everyone in this chat room is a terrible person and they are so awful that they are no longer believable. Unfriended is a film that is original enough that it can be enjoyed despite having a lack of scares. I’d rather watch this than another found footage movie. Expand

The movie takes itself just seriously enough to still make an effort, but not so seriously as to become unwatchable. The scares are light hearted and fun, and everybody in the theater was entertained and involved in what was happening. This is a great movie to go see with a bunch of friends, or with someone who is not a fan of more intense horror movies. Great and funny movie that is definitely worth checking out if you are just looking to pass the time and get a few laughs. I must add however, that the ending was pretty awful and unfortunately cost the movie a positive review. Not worth seeing in theaters but would recommend renting! Expand

Having the film centered around a computer screen and all that it encompasses turned out to be far more entertaining than I could have expected. With this said, there also could’ve been a lot more work done with this film to really enhance it as a whole. For example, it would’ve been nice to see some more character development either in the beginning or towards the end of the film between Laura and Blair. A better understanding of these two characters would’ve helped to establish a better connection with the audience that was greatly needed. Even though this film was very different, it was not enough to impress me and not something worth rushing to theatres for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think that only Shelley Hennig gives a good performance, and that means that the cast is trash. The movie has a lot of continuity errors. After half of the movie you don’t care who dies, like… They witnessed the death of two of their friends and they worry about who hit her mom's car, who started the rumor of her eating disorder... I think that was the point though, they don’t give a crap about anyone. I didn't understand the chatroulette thing, why would you do all that if you can just pick up the phone and call 911? Although the film is very badly directed, it was very entertaining, I couldn't get my eyes off the screen. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfriended, from academic and filmmaking standpoints, is actually pretty interesting because other than literally the final second of the movie, the entire thing takes place on a computer screen, making it really unique and unlike anything I’d ever seen before. Unfriended has college level concepts in it that make it worth watching despite its flaws and manages to exploit and add anxiety to things that commonly happen on computers that we don’t normally make a big deal about. These things happen frequently and they mean nothing to us, but they mean a lot to the characters in this movie and heighten the fear and horror despite how relatively minor they are. The structure of this movie will be very familiar to teens and young adults in the era of modern technology which gives it a sense of relatability that I did appreciate. The way the characters react to each other and the horror component of this movie is extremely realistic and accurate of how people would react in the real world, as is the way they respond to it. They take appropriate actions to attempt to deal with the horror part of this movie, something I also liked. In general, Unfriended doesn’t rely on protagonist curiosity/stupidity to further along the plot or make the movie go in a totally new direction; the characters try to be as smart as they can be to resolve the conflicts in the movie, even if some of those resolutions aren’t too pretty. The horror itself isn’t bad; the movie (spoiler alert) manages to make a glitch of someone staring at a camera frozen really scary and probably the most terrifying moment of the whole movie. A lot of the horror in this movie is stupid, but that shot wasn’t and was effective. Unfortunately, Unfriended suffers from a lot of story and plot stupidity and important things not making sense. There were other ways this movie could’ve been executed that would been much better for me and caused the components that didn’t make sense to make a lot more sense, which would’ve helped the film flow better overall. I don’t fully understand what was causing the characters to have the fates that they did since my understanding was that the supernatural presence was limited to the computer screen, and yet many scenes in the movie suggest otherwise. The core premise of this movie doesn’t work too well for me which is disappointing because the structure is really interesting. Unfriended got close to being a really enjoyable movie for me and really just suffers from things not making sense and flowing badly which causes it to falter at crucial moments when it could’ve really shined and been an effective work of art in the horror genre.
