Initially, there is some character development that threatens to make the movie bearable. Midway thru the movie all goes south with rock bottom coming in the last part of the film. True, most of us remember being afraid of the bogeyman or the dark at some point in our life. This move takes that premise and turns it into horrible movie. The only people that may enjoy this film are children 12 and under. Unfortunately, and for some unknown reason, the film is rated R. It is almost a bad combination of ....on second thought, I don't want to put any movie in the same category as this one. Expand

When you see a horror film in theaters, it seems like all you get is either a slasher film with a ton of blood, a serial killer movie with lots of gore, or a supernatural thriller with nothing but jump scares. Real horror is supposed to be scary and is supposed to be something that sticks with you, but it's rare that a film can do that anymore, and Under The Bed is no exception. I can sum up this film by simply saying it's an hour of goosebumps, ten minutes of ridiculously over the top gore, and a whole five minutes of stranger things, thrown in at the end, for an attempt at originality. Not only was this a horror movie that I would call boring, but the cast was just plain annoying and written to be beyond stupid. If not for the writers love of the F word, combined with the last fifteen minutes of the film, Under The Bed could literally have been a Goosebump. Jonny Weston stars, and the future Project Almanac star, really was the only bright spot. This was one of his first films, but he at least has a clue as to how to live in the moment and build up the intensity. Weston's character had an interesting background and even a couple of funny one-liners, aside from that, this film has absolutely nothing. For those of us who love independent films, we are always taking a risk, knowing that a lot of times we're seeing newcomers. A lot of these films are something different, new, and refreshing, but other times they reek of inexperience and are completely lacking in originality. Under The Bed is yet another example of the latter. Expand

This movie is one of the better horror movies that have come out reacently. When I saw it, it was like "Hallelujah!". In short: not a masterpiece, but damn good. Read on and don't trust anyone who gives this movie any less than a 6 - they are most certainly full of ****
This movie's concept is as old as time - Boogeyman with a twist that is not far from the apple three, but still - a good, fun watch.
Jonny Weston, who plays the lead, has just one flaw in this movie, and it's not a small one - he isn't believable at times. I just don't feel the overall direction of the character was on par with the plot, same with his father, played by Peter Holden. On the other hand, the little brother played by Gattlin Griffith did pretty good for a kid - he got both compassion and a laught out of me.
The overall plot in the movie isn't anything special or original, but it's directed nicely. The movie is very selfconscious about what it is doing, with some minor exceptions that I don't even remember anymore. It has both nice amounts of mystery that setles the plot well, and some well placed gore that doesn't take up 4/5 of the movie - props to that, especially considering in what year was the movie made.
The movie could best be described as a mediocre watch, but the fact that it did an old and famous concept differently and that it is a very fun time, make it worth the time investment. Only the ending ruined it a bit for me, it's reminiscent of Stephen King's IT movies. Horror fans will understand that statement, I trust.
All in all, trust me and if you are looking for a nice supernatural horror flick - check it out. You can consider this movie pretty softcore, it wont make you sleep with the lights on and to me - that's a good thing. Being interesting and spooky sometimes is better than trying to hard. And that's one of the highpoints of this movie. As previously said, director Steven C. Miller was clearly conscious of what he was doing with the movie and it shows. This movie isn't your typical horror movie, it's not something too different or weird either. But it's most certainly better than most movies that come out and get loads of praise for rehashing old tricks like jumpscares and gore. If you are looking for a fun watch - this movie is for you. Just don't expect it to be the next movie that keeps you awake for a week - not gonna happen. However, it will keep you interested for an hour and a half, which is a lot considering the current state of the horror genre. However, you will forget it two days later. But hey, I already forgot Insidious Chapter 2 also, so what?
