I knew after seeing him in Punch Drunk Love he was very talented and he's just incredible in this. For me this is a tragic tale of how worldly greed and obsession with beauty can ultimately lead to unhappiness. Sandler's Mistress in the movie is the same as the gem he's obsessed with, dangerous and unobtainable. He's a man that has everything but still wants more. He's a man that lusts after excitement and novelty and disregards what he always has. By the end of the film the message is clear. Don't! Everything about this film is perfect. The music, the acting, the pacing. There's so much going on underneath the surface too thematically. I'm still finding hidden meaning in it. A masterpiece Expand

Not a motion sickness issue, just non-stop drama, poor decisions from main actors, and waiting for someone to jump out and knock some sense into the main characters. I realized i was so wound up with anxiety during the movie when I checked my phone to look at the time and realized there was another 1+ hours left to go! Adam Sandler is great, and showed his true acting ability, which was a surprise. This is no comedy, although some of us laughed nervously at a few points in the show just to release the tension. Shocking ending that made me gasp out loud, which I never do. I have minor heart disease, and with about 15 minutes left in the movie, I was overwhelmed and needed to stand up and raise my arms to reduce tension and breathe deeply. It worked, and I was able to enjoy the ending. I have to admit, there were times I wanted to leave because of the foolish choices being made, but I was so invested I just couldn't. Well done movie, and highly recommended. Just be aware of the anxiety factor and a fast moving flick from start to end. Expand

Adam Sandler delivers his best performance to date, and reminds the audience that when given the right film, he can really shine. The Safdie Brothers have always been an intriguing pair for me and their last film, Good Time, was one of the best films I saw in 2017, which was packed with incredible performances. Their directing style is very different and off the wall and it shines through here as well. The film is frantically paced (for all the good reasons), and doesn't let the viewer catch their breath for even a minute. LaKeith Stanfield and Julia Fox were very good in their roles as well. The Safdie Brothers pull an amazing performance out of Adam Sandler, a character whose every action ignites events which just get more chaotic and stressful. He's a gambling addict in a world of trouble: His debtors are on his tale twenty four hours, his family life is falling apart, and so is his affair. Almost immediately it sets the tone with characters constantly shouting over each other, and the stakes are set from the start. From that point on, the stakes only continue to rise, and during the moments it stops to breathe, the tension increases due to the positions that the protagonist is put in. I saw this three months ago, and I still haven't fully recovered from the roller coaster ride. I look forward to watching it again, and to seeing what the Safdie Brothers bring us next. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i’m literally here to clear the air for some of y’all. most reviews i’m seeing are from people that don’t understand the premise of the whole movie. They complain about it being too anxiety ridden and the ending to be unsatisfactory. In reality, the purpose of the movie is to make you hate Adam Sandler and to play with the emotion of greed and how that can ultimately get you killed (as he does). everything happened to illustrate that point. His addiction to gambling getting in the way, him getting **** over at the auction was all a way of setting up the inevitable ending and the greed he has for something that has consumed him and his reality. That’s why at the end the bullet hole is zoomed in on and we see all
of the sparkling colors. This shot was completely ripped from the beginning scene to further drive that point across. The Gem is HIM he can’t think of anything else. As far as the writing and cinematography is concerned that is perfection in my eyes. It is there to make the watcher feel the intensity of the characters and the situation their in. The editors and the director want to make you hate Howie and they SUCCEED. As he keeps digging himself deeper in this hole i found myself just yelling at him to stop.

I genuinely have not felt as much anxiety and stress in a movie all 2019 and 2020 (So Far). The Safdie brothers are masters of anxiety inducing filmmaking, I definitely felt their style take hold of me in their film Good Time released in 2017. But while I thought Good Time was fantastic, it still felt like an appetizer of what the Safdie brothers could do. And I’m glad to tell y’all, Uncut Gems is the main gourmet course. I’ve seen this film 4 times in the cinema, and It still never feels like a waste of my money and time. Josh & Benny Safdie bring their anxiety and stress-inducing filmmaking to another level with Uncut Gems, and craft a genuinely compelling and off the wall story, with a masterfully written screenplay. And this film is brought to life by the amazing performances of the entire cast, primarily made up of first time actors who kill it in their first film (Kevin Garnett, Julia Fox). Kevin Garnett, one of the best basketball players of the last decade is genuinely fantastic and convincing in his performance, and Julia Fox is just masterful in her first ever film performance as Howard’s mistress Julia De Fiore. Lakeith Stanfield is proving to be one of the best actors working today (even if he’s just in a minor role), he is excellent as Howard’s estranged employee Demany. But we can not talk about phenomenal performances without bringing up the centerpiece of this film.. MR. ADAM SANDLER. I’ve said it and I’ll say it again, Adam Sandler was severely snubbed for a Best Actor nomination from The Academy. Adam Sandler, who is known for his ridiculous and pretty terrible comedies, takes a break from those, and shows us when the man want to deliver a thrilling performance, he most certainly can. The way Adam in-bodies Howard Ratner, a scumbag and risk taking New York City jeweler and bet placer. Howard continuously makes bad decisions and bets, meanwhile having a family and an impending divorce with his wife Dinah Ratner. Howard also owes over 100,000 to a very violent and ruthless loan shark named Arno. Even after Howard actually places a winning bet on Kevin Garnett’s performance in the Celtics game, Arno cancels the bet and has his goons strip Howard and leaves him naked outside his child’s school, forcing his wife Dinah to retrieve him. Like I said, this film is extremely anxiety inducing, this film & it’s 2 directors want to take your nerve endings and destroy them, and then replace them with new nerve endings, so they can destroy your nerve endings again. The film’s ending is tragic, but expected. Howard finally makes a winning bet, and actually wins millions of dollars. But Phil (one of Arno’s toughest goons) kills Howard and we see Julia leaving with Howard’s millions. Which IMO, was the perfect ending to this crazy story. IMO, this is not just one of the best films of 2019, but one of the best of the entire decade and might become one of my favorite crime movies ever made. Adam Sandler’s performance is one for the ages, and I hope to see him take these amazing dramatic roles more frequently. This is 100% a must see for anybody who calls themselves a Cinephile, a nerve ending killer, with fantastic performances from the entire cast, and a decade defining screenplay and story from the Safdie brothers (Benny & Josh Safdie). Please see this film immediately, and please rent and/or buy the movie on Blu-Ray! A 10/10 from me, and I am so glad I get to be alive in a generation where cinema like this exists. Films like this inspire me to continue my passion for filmmaking, and reminds me why I love the art form of Film so much!!- Will Herren (April 22, 2020) Expand

The biggest reason for that is its anxiety inducing musical score, sometimes intense dialogue and the hectic way the movie was filmed. Even after saying all that, this movie was my niche and one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. The last few minutes were the most intense final moments in any movie I have ever experienced, you really are going to be at the edge of your seat and making the whole anxiety induced experience worth it. Surprisingly is also funny at times, which is good for its pacing. When Adam Sandler does drama, he's at his best and really hope this is his career going forward. The whole movie has an iconic look and aesthetic going for it, its hard to compare it with anything and it will be talked about for years to come. L'Amour Toujours is officially the best ending credit song ever, fitting for this movie's shocking ending. Expand

Here the anxiogenic capacity of the Safdie brothers is raised to the maximum level. Tension and anxiety are raised to the stars here. The two young directors also prove to be great actors directors, since Sandler provides the best performance of his career overcoming his PDL one. This movie is full of anxiety, suspense and action in perfect Safdie's style, and from the start to the end it is entertaining as hell. This movie may be less engaging on an emotional level if compared to his smaller brother "Good Time" because you can't feel empathy for any of the characters here. I loved Good Time, and I was anticipated this movie more than anything else this season. It delivers, with just minor drawbacks (which I can't go into - as they're plot spoilers). As someone who is obsessed with the NBA and the way that it interfaces with sports gambling, I'm, I guess you would say, the target audience. And Sandler is incredible, as I suspected he would be. Adel Dazeem is also really good in a smaller role. However, the big find in this film is Julia Fox as Howard's (Sandler's) girlfriend. She's the x-factor in this fun, fast-paced, and ultimately frenzied pic. If there were ever a reason to go see a film on the big screen - (screw all that comic book garbage) - this is it. Expand

This is essentially the story of one man's self-destructive downward spiral. Our lead starts things off in an already bad position and the situation only gets worse for him from there. At first you think he's just an unlucky idiot, but as the film progresses you realize that he's making these bad decisions on purpose and intentionally digging himself into a deeper hole. All because he believes that if he just keeps on digging he'll eventually break through to the other side and come out on top with the ultimate win. The man has a genuine sickness.

Yet, despite all of this he's actually kind of likable. Maybe it's just because of Sandler, but even at his loudest and most obnoxious (there's a lot of yelling in this) I couldn't help but root for the guy. I wanted to see him succeed and find a way out of this mess. Which is what made it so compelling to keep watching in spite of all the frustration that arose from seeing the character acquire a means of walking away and refusing to use it.

Of course it also helps that it's stylish as heck. With its synth-soundtrack and occasionally psychedelic 35mm visuals, this a treat for both the eyes and the ears. It kind of reminds me of Nightcrawler in that everything looks grainy, yet gorgeous like a sleazy '80s flick. The whole thing feels so much grittier because of it.

What's crazy is that this does so many of the same things we criticize some of the most notoriously bad movies for, like having needless subplots that don't go anywhere. For example the film opens with Sandler getting a colonoscopy. Presumably so that at some point it can be revealed he has cancer on top of everything else going on. But when the doctor does finally call him with the results around an hour or so later into the running-time he tells him that everything's fine and it's never brought up again. What was the point of that? We also learn that the protagonist owes money to a second dude that he tries to pay off with a fake Rolex. The guy shows up again in a few other scenes to get some form of actual payment, but he just gets ignored and I'm left wondering why he's even in this at all.

However, where that sort of thing doesn't work in other movies, here it does. That's because the Safdie brothers are just that talented as directors. The way the danger builds to an unforgettable finale where what would normally be a tension free event becomes a teeth-clenching, seat-gripping nightmare of anticipation makes Uncut Gems darn near a masterpiece. To the point where after having just finished it I immediately thought about watching it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Adam Sandler plays a phenomenal role as a Jewish New Yorker high-end jewelry dealer who has trouble with money and finds himself in a lot of trouble. It is tense and thrilling from start to finish, I had a mild feeling of anxiety the entire time as Adam dug himself deeper and deeper into a hole. The ending is absolutely bonkers on many levels. A24 strikes AGAIN. Expand

Uncut Gems, a modern-day Roman Tragedy, situated in the fluorescent back rooms and the front showrooms of New York City’s shopping underbelly, is the latest film from the Safdie Brothers. If you have no idea who the Safdie brothers are, theyUncut Gems, a modern-day Roman Tragedy, situated in the fluorescent back rooms and the front showrooms of New York City’s shopping underbelly, is the latest film from the Safdie Brothers. If you have no idea who the Safdie brothers are, they are two (actual) brothers who gained profuse acclaim after shocking audiences with the 2017 crime-drama Good Time starring Robert Pattinson. Not only can Pattinson thank the Safdie’s for landing the coveted role of Bruce Wayne with the film, as well as allowing that film to shed his Edward Cullen/Twilight teen image, but the film was also an obtrusive reminder to the world that these brothers are not playing around when it comes to neon lit storytelling. Their documentary style type filmmaking along with their abrasive, headache induing filming style allows for their low-budget pictures to glisten, no matter how bad their VFX may be. The Safdie’s are a clear and present reminder that, with the right story, passion is always reflective. With their latest film, Uncut Gems, its not secret, and reflects here. Uncut Gems stars Adam Sandler as Howard Ratner, a down-on-his luck, gambling addicted, cheating, lying, manipulative NYC jeweller who, if we’ve ever seen it in cinema, has a degree in **** Although the “gift-of-the-gab” definition may not particularly suit Howard, since everyone, all the time, knows he is always talking out of his ass, Sandler convinces himself and audiences that no one else could have pulled off this role, other than him. Abrasive, in your face, annoying and relentless, Sandler’s performance may very well be, a staple New York City character for decades to come.

Yet, while Sandler may very well grace every single shot and scene in the film, the Safdie brothers are still sure and able to allow the film to evolve into what it really is, and thats an announcement. A proclamation of presence and a big shout out to the world of cinema, Uncut Gems is a film to solidify that the Safdie brothers are here, and they are here to stay. Uncut Gems isn’t only a film, its an experience. Much like the first time you do cocaine, this film is the epitome of cocaine, caviar, K’vatsh and Grand Theft Auto printed onto celluloid. An unapologetic adrenaline shot to the senses.

What initially drew me in about this film was sonically, how unique it sounded, narratively speaking, without knowing how loud and it is aesthetically as well. The main theme which is a series of hard hitting, resonating synths overlapped with fluorescent ambience is immediately engrained into your memory. Daniel Lopatin takes a gritty in your face film, and scores each scene with electronic chaos yet equal grace. Not only does his score tighten and heightens the cinematic movie experience, but it also broadens its effect on the senses by creating soundscapes that are transcendent, it’s as if the soundtrack was created by the sounds of slot machines, casino betting, and the whaling of a screeching auctioneer in your ear at all times. The sounds of Uncut Gems are as dreamy as a nightmare could be. Drowning souls lost for the pursuit of money as if they are trapped in the notes that belt and vibrate across the screen, Uncut Gems is a documentary style take on Wayne Kramer’s hyper-violent Running Scared, but instead of opting for violence and gore, the film uses dialogue as its weapon.

While the narrative of Uncut Gems could be argued to expose the very simple story of just, the pursuit of money, the picture dives deep into social and economic commentary of capitalism and corporate greed as well. On the surface level, perhaps because of the value it holds in our society, the overall tone and theme of the film carries a type of mysticism behind it. Idolized and mythologized since its creation, the pursuit of wealth to bring happiness is an age-old cautionary tale that consistently makes fools out of many who chase it, including our protagonist Howard Ratner.

Set in 2012 within the deep diamond district of New York, Sandler’s characters faults become clear early on. His inability to being a family man adds to his persona. Ratner’s addicted ultimately fuels the narrative of the film as well as the desires of all the characters around him, leading to a very flawed and uncut portrait of a man as well as society as a whole.

Set at a breakneck pace, tonally ambitious and hyper-realized, the film feels so real at times, that it comes across as mega-fiction. Like a rapper on a mic, free-styling during a rap battle, the actors follow a script that was in development for almost a decade, yet sling-shot lines and emotions to one another, like they have been doing it their whole lives. Thanks to caliber actors like Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Idina Menzel, Judd Hirsch, and surprisingly enough, retired NBA player Kevin Garnett, Uncut Gems is a masterclass of coherent gibberish.

This has got to be the most anxiety-inducing film I've seen in a LONG time! In this film, Adam Sandler plays a charismatic New York jeweler, who finds himself in over his head with several gambling debts he owes to various loan sharks and criminals throughout the city. In order to pay his debts, he must resort to desperate measures, such as pawning or selling various valuables, including a beautiful opal stone, and even betting thousands of dollars on Kevin Garnett in Celtics games. Sandler definitely plays against type in this film, ditching his silly comedy and slapstick humor he's become so associated with (for better or worse.) However, some of his humor and style does squeak in a little here and there, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a more dramatic and tense context, which this film carries in spades! He's never been better and finds a great balance for his character, cheeky and carefree at times, but also no-nonsense in others. Other familiar faces include Idina Menzel as his wife, and Celtics player Kevin Garnett as himself. Storywise, it kept me thoroughly anxious for nearly the whole time, as I constantly kept wondering how he'd be able to get himself out of various situations throughout the film. The pace gradually picks up speed, and my feelings of nervousness and anticipation only increased as the film progressed, while the film's final five minutes or so literally making my jaw drop! Overall, it's dazzling, tense, and doesn't let up until the very end! And what's more, it's undoubtedly a surprising and impressive change of pace and showcase for Sandler, who truly delivers an unforgettable career-best performance! Expand

It centers on the life of Howard Ratner, an ambitious jeweller who makes the biggest bet of his life - in the hope that his various personal and financial problems will cease to exist. Watching this film is like going on a rollercoaster. The movie progresses at a rapid pace, and you sit helplessly as you watch Ratner fall further into the abyss with every poor choice that he makes. There are moments when you cheer, as well as moments when you close your eyes in fear. Like the end of such a rollercoaster ride, the ending of this movie will leave you winded. Undoubtedly, the main highlight of the movie is Adam Sandler's scintillating performance as the troubled jeweller. The supporting cast is solid too, particularly first-timers Julia Fox and Kevin Garnett. Without a doubt, Uncut Gems is a must watch. Expand

Let'sUncut Gems is beautiful chaos, stress-inducing, anxiety triggering manic chaos, I'm still catching my breath from watching it, there isn't one dull second in this film, it's fast-paced storytelling with endless charm and authenticity. Let's talk about the essence of this film, Adam Sandler materializes Howard Ratner with all his baggage, the bad and the good, he embodies this character and brings it to life, I'm really tempted to call this his best work to date, it's a big claim but it deserves it, "Punch Drunk Love" was something else but this is just breathtaking, honestly, it just wows.
The Safdies brothers really went for it with "Uncut Gems", their acid-infused filmmaking is on full display yet again, they shaped the narrative near damn flawlessly and gave Sandler a fantastic story to work with. A power trip that will play with your primal senses, that's the best way to describe it, absolutely great.

I understand people's issues with it saying "it triggers anxiety easily", because it does, but that was the point. I appreciate a movie that makes me stay on the edge of my seat the entire time and this movie did just that. Yes, my anxiety was off the wall the whole movie, but it was supposed to be like that. It was showing how anxious and hectic Howard's life was. It put you into the movie and made you feel what the movie, and people in it, felt. That is true talented cinematography, directing and storytelling. That is what they should be doing. This movie was a masterpiece, in my opinion. Yes, before you watch this movie, if you have or get anxiety very easily, you should 100% prepare yourself because you will go on a very crazy ride, but don't say this movie was bad because of that. I didn't like the ending much, but that doesn't change my feelings on this movie, that just makes it even better. It made me dedicated to this character. In retrospect, he was such a douchebag, but I still liked him, cared for him and felt bad for him. After the ending, I felt a huge relief and a weight off my shoulder, in a way, that the movie was done because it made me so dedicated to it. I loved this movie. Expand

Adam Sandler's performance was fantastic, and it is the centerpiece of this film. He does a really great job of portraying this kinda scummy dude with serious personal flaws. The other actors in the film were all good as well, and I didn't have any serious problems with the acting. The acting in this film really helps establish this anxious and intense mood that is carried out throughout the entire runtime. Things get more intense and anxiety-building as it goes on, and the film does a great job of piling on to the main catalyst of the plot in an engaging way. Even though this film is pretty intense, there were some humorous moments which I found pretty funny in general. The soundtrack of the film felt pretty unique and greatly complemented the tone of the film. Lastly, the ending of the film is incredibly surprising and memorable, and I feel it perfectly capped off the plot. I don't really have any major problems with the film, although I guess some of the cinematography could've been better or at least more stylized. This film isn't for everyone, and I wouldn't recommend it to most people who typically enjoy Sandler's films, but I personally loved this film. Expand

Much has been said about the adrenaline pace and frenetic direction of the Sadfie Brothers. The movie lives up to those claims of it being a shot of adrenaline and making you feel the anxiety of Sandler's character. I was hooked from the moment it started right up to the end. The movie reminded me at times of Silver Linings Playbook, specifically Robert De Niro's, superstitious gambler character in that movie. Uncut Gems has some hilarious moments where Kevin Garnett and Adam Sandler both get caught up in superstitions and Sandler's character is a gambling addict if there ever was one. The final act of the movie contains the all time crazy bet in movie history with more parlays than one can count. Strongly recommend this movie. For those who are thinking about seeing the movie but are not sure, should check out "Good Time" on Amazon Prime. That was the Sadfie's brothers last movie and contains a similar frenetic style. The film grabs your attention immediately, and by the time the opening scene and credits are over you realize you have no idea what to expect. Fantastic modern crime thriller, quirky sci-fi undertones, beautifully shot. As you would expect, it is very anxiety inducing, and the score handled by Oneohtrix Point Never helps you feel all types of ways at once. Also worth noting that whoever was on wardrobe absolutely killed it, and no I am not only talking about Sandler. Sandler and Garnett also nailed it in this one, and I really hope Sandler gives another quality performance like this again soon. It's a necessary watch and a modern crime classic. Sandler (Howard) is unquestionably the star of the film, he gets a lot of stick for a lot of the roles he usually plays but this is far from anything I've seen him portray. He still shows his funny side no doubt, but he adds much more to make it a memorable character - which is a rarity for him.

Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett and Eric Bogosian are all good too. The score is pretty solid, also. There isn't much more to note really, it's a crime thriller and it absolutely nails that realm. Great film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Somehow, through the chaotic, turbulent, messy story of Howard Ratner, there seems to be something resembling a point. We catch it now and again, flickering throughout each stomach-turning, nauseating, utterly humiliating narrative diversion, threatening, but never moving to outright state itself. It's this idea that our moral devices may be even more ineffectual than we are capable of realizing. I mean, take, for instance, the prevailing notion that maybe Kevin Garnett isn't insane and that the stone maybe really does have protective powers. And if this stone, endowed by some higher cosmic order, really does contain some magical charm, why on Earth does is choose to protect Howard Ratner, a sleazy, cheating, good-for-nothing schmuck constitutionally incapable of good decision making? Could it be that the powers that be simply have no time for human logic and morality? Is it possible that the universe, offended by our attempts to instill our idea of order, saw Howard as some parter in chaos, misunderstood in his time by his peers? The movie doesn't answer these questions, nor do they ever even come up. The movie smartly leaves the thinking to its audience, ushering us only to serve as brief onlookers to this modern veritable retelling of Albert Camus' "The Stranger."

Adam Sandler, himself a sneering jerk-off in the eyes of critics, whose spent the better part of 20 trotting around Hollywood with a giant "Kick Me" sign, couldn't have been better picked for the role. Despite his less-than-stellar repertoire, Sandler triumphs in the film simply by playing himself, in all his obnoxious, douchey glory. And yet, the Safdie Brothers didn't simply take the easy route, for instance, by making Ratner some completely moronic toad, they went to the trouble of making him an almost sympathetically earnest, occasionally brilliant toad, just enough to make us see him through the eyes maybe only God sees us in - misguided creatures eternally bound to both sheer dumb luck and our own shortcomings. Many people in the movie attempt to intervene in Ratner's life an show him the light, be it Arno, his thuggish but ultimately good-hearted brother-in-law who's been pushed to such a point of desperation that he's turned to bullying, accosting, and terrorizing Howard into reforming, or his patient girlfriend Julia, who is both more loyal and more trusting than Howard deserves, considering all he puts her through, as goes for his hapless assistant Demany. Only his ex-wife, Dinah, and Phil, one of Arno's thugs, are impervious enough to Howard's charms to work out that he's just completely beyond saving. The former chooses to laugh in the face of his pathetic state, where the latter, realizing that both Howard and Arno and their laughable phallic conflict is simply getting in the way of his ends.

And that's how the film elects to conclude itself. Two men dead, one who completely deserved whatever came to him, and the other a flawed-but-decent man who was dumb enough to involve himself with a human anchor. And yet, what we end up taking away from all this is that one died in a panicked fit, and the other got to go out with a smile on his face, smugly assured in his hedonistic, self-interested ways.

This was easily one of the exceptions due mostly to Sandler's dedication he brought into the grimy and slimy character of Howard. The story is straightforward enough, but the constant problematic conundrums that arise at all corners keep the intensity at high levels throughout and you cannot wait to see what unfolds though you know it will be inevitably troublesome. Once everything comes to a head, the story's tension unravels into a shocking finish. If you're a fan of Adam Sandler, you'll need to understand this is a different version that he saves for his most passionate roles, though he's still the same brilliant funnyman we all know in parts. Some of the soundtrack is overwhelming and off putting at times but really that's my only complaint. Otherwise it's a solid dramatic thriller. Expand

Scheming. lying, cheating, a mon-stop ball of lets make a deal. I gave it an 8 rating. Better than quite a few I've seen during 2019. characters in real life played here usually get what they got comin..A horrible death. Jolly good Show. Expand

"Uncut Gems" is an entrancing, psychedelic, and fervent crime thriller that delivers on all fronts, most notably its stellar directing, acting, and cinematography.

One of the most stressful movie experiences I’ve had in awhile.

This whole movie runs entirely on acid and how the series of events unfold was particularly stressful. People constantly talking or yelling over each other while the brilliant sound work made the space around them feel so tight, but incredibly claustrophobic.

While I like ‘Good Time’ a little more, but man what a rush.

Adam Sandler is absolutely terrific as the greedy and sleazy Howard Ratner. If he's working with a good director, a strong supporting cast, and an interesting concept, Sandler will thrive. We follow Howard Ratner, a jewelry store owner in New York with a serious gambling problem that makes the hole his standing in deeper and deeper. Despite every terrible decision his character made...I still felt sorry for him. I think it has to do with Sandler's devilish charm that won me over into pitting such a petty crook. He isn’t a loser, he’s a winner who doesn't win. It’s one of his best performance right beside ‘Punch Drunk Love’.

Benny and Josh Safdie are such vibrant directors that can inject so much style while also having a harsh look to it, which ties in with the slimy side of business. The Safdie Brothers are building a solid career for themselves. Darius Khondji outstanding cinematography is the glue that holds this high tension of a movie together.

I loved the score from Daniel Lopatin, which will often drown out the dialogue as the retro rift comes blasting through. On the other hand, there’s also a slow mystical vibe that Lopatin composes that gave me a surreal feeling of levitating.

Kevin Garnett is surprisingly really good in this movie. A professional basketball player actually delivering a solid performance is almost unheard of. It kinda reminds me of Tyler Perry ‘Gone Girl’, in terms of your expectations from them vs what you got. I also couldn’t believe this is Julia Fox first acting debut, because she’s fantastic in the movie.

Overall rating: While I’m only two movies into their filmography, Safdie Brothers are upon my favorite working directors.

I hope they make another movie like 'Good Time' & 'Uncut Gems', so it can called the LSD trilogy.

This is the opposite of a feel-good movie. Watch at your own risk. I have to give it props for being nerve-wrackingly exciting. I did not fiddle with my phone once, and that hasn’t happened in a very long time.

It's very well-acted, well-written and gripping from the beginning till the end. The ending was especially crazy and actually quite depressing. Overall a very intense movie with little to no flaws. I'll give it an 8.7/10

This is an intense trip, and totally worth the ride. It's nerve wracking, and hard to watch at many points, but for me it was an experience worth enduring. Beware though, your mileage may vary.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Adam Sandler's best performance? No. But it's indeed his best since Punch-Drunk Love, which continues to be the pinnacle of his talent.

While the film isn't the best talking about technique, it seems to me that its style is totally focused on making the experience an exhausting one. And Uncut Gems is an overwhelming journey full of anxiety. It achieved that splendidly.
That's its greatest accomplishment: To immerse you in the entire atmosphere of the environment that Sandler's character inhabits, while we witness the cascade of bad decisions he makes.

Perhaps the biggest mistake is how the directors get to over-lengthen the story, which indirectly gets to a point where Sandler's character becomes obnoxious but I think that's part of the experience, because who ever in their right mind would feel more sympathy for a person like him? I mean more than the allowed sympathy anyways.

Its ending, although predictable is certainly what he built and there's no learning in it and it doesn't need to be.
After all the story was his decline while he believed that he was going to succeed. And yes for a moment he did and for a moment he savored it, but as happens many times in life, good things aren't made to last.

Another triumph for A24.

You've got high intensity, quick claustrophobic cuts that really bring out the dire situations of Howard (Sandler), who will most justly and most likely pick up some best actor noms as well as some wins elsewhere, and I'd not be surprised to see the screenplay up for awards. Certainly deserving. This film knocks on many doors. Not just gambling and gems. There's worldly social commentary, a little bit of Jewish history and modern culture.// You're a fly on the wall to the method of Howards madness, and no matter how tumultuous, you'll never want to get off his ride, even when you know he's wrong. Sandler sold it solid, with a great a surprising ensemble cast paving the way for him to shine. I see a little later-Lumet in this film, and some sprinkling of David O Russell. But inspirations aside, this film does anything but rip on it, but rather creates a new 21 century film, through unique editing, cuts keep the story always cresting, and one more time, Sandler kills. Knocks em dead. I give it a solid 8/10. Expand
