A close 8 but it kept me pretty entertained, plus the twist was good and bad. I don't really know about it, sometimes the cinematography was good, sometimes it wasn't, but it was a original story, with great acting

Making a follow up to the universally acclaimed Sixth Sense was always going to be a difficult task but M. Night Shyamalan fully delivers here. Davids transformation from lowly security guard to something much bigger (I wont spoil what) is both fascinating and yet still believable in part thanks to the understated performance of Bruce Willis in the lead role and Samuel L Jackson is as watchable as ever. This of course would not be an M. Night Shyamalan movie if it didn’t have a twist at the end and, while perhaps not quite as clever as The Sixth Sense, it again certainly comes as a surprise.

Often unfairly compared to M. Night Shyamalans debut Unbreakable is an excellent film in its own right that will entertain most who watch it.

Maybe it is not a movie for everybody, due to some parts dragging and rambling on just a tad, but it is a thoughtful, moving and compelling film.

It is a very well made film with beautiful, brooding cinematography and striking scenery. Unbreakable also features my personal favourite James Newton Howard score for any of his collaborations with Shyamalan, it is so gorgeous and subtle. Even with the odd draggy moment, Unbreakable does have a very enthralling story that resonated with me a lot. Like The Sixth Sense, it deals with the supernatural genre but takes it to a thought-provoking and surreal level.

The pace is measured, and for the most part it works. The script is thoughtfully written as well, the characters are interesting(I don't think Willis has had a more involving character than the one he has here) and Shyamalan's confidence and assurance further adds to the many impressive things about Unbreakable. Bruce Willis and Samuel L.Jackson are both fantastic, and one wonders why they didn't do more together.

Some have been dismissive of the ending, I actually thought it was fine, though I was underwhelmed by it on my first viewing a few years back. I did say before that The Sixth Sense's ending was the only one of a Shyamalan film that worked, after re-watching Unbreakable I take that back. I still think though the others were either needlessly melodramatic(Signs), laughable(The Village) or both(The Happening). All in all, a great film and one of Shyamalan's better ones. 9/10 Bethany Cox

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable is one of the best films ever made period. Everything about this film is almost perfect. Bruce Willis is amazing as the character David Dunn, as well as Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price/Mr. Glass. The film is also very quiet and slow and takes its time to build up the characters and the tone and pacing are perfect. In the end, this film is almost perfect and is very rewatchable. Expand

It's unfairly compared to M. Night Shyamalan's previous film, The Sixth Sense, when the two films could hardly be more different. The only thing they have in common is their tone and comparing them is an unfair and unproductive thing to do. In my opinion, it's M. Night's best film and one that may not have met audiences's expectations but is far more intelligent and powerful than it gets credit for being.

Shyamalan has a particular style to his direction that subtly adds certain aspects to the plot through visual cues. Everything has its purpose in the story. For example, the use of contrasting clothing colours adds to the nature of the characters. Scenes of dialogue are filmed in long, uninterrupted takes that make them so much more engaging because they flow so smoothly and are so well-acted. In every scene, the camera moves to follow its subject in a way that’s seamless—mesmerising, even. The score by James Newton Howard, once again, fits the film like a glove and sent chills down my spine during the climactic final scenes.

This film is remarkably well-acted. Bruce Willis gives arguably the best performance of his career, as he and every other character evoke the fullness of possible emotion—sadness, rage, hopelessness, and eventually happiness—in even the most subtle of facial expressions. The actors are aided by a clever script that explores the complexities of power, good and evil, tragedy, love and loss, and what it means to be a hero. It’s ambitious, and it balances its many themes with genius dexterity.

I would describe Unbreakable as the smartest superhero movie ever made. It’s twist ending—contrary to popular opinion—is not intended to be a “WHAT?!” moment, but instead it adds another thought-provoking layer to the beautiful character arcs. The film was well ahead of its time, written long before the superhero genre was thought to be full of potential, and it still holds up to this day as a masterfully-told story of ordinary-to-extraordinary.

The 1 hour and 47 minutes of boring, predictable and foolish sequences of silence in between unbelievably repetitive dialogue easily make this movie one of the most roll-your-eyes producing films I have ever gone threw. Bruce Willis plays the dull and slow-moving David Dunn, a lone and unharmed train wreak survivor who discovers that he is unable to sustain injury. Meanwhile, the emotionally unstable and easily injured Samuel L. Jackson plays the obviously brilliant yet deceiving psycho who thinks comic book heroes walk the earth. The movie unravels from somewhat interesting to boring. It takes most of the movie for what is at hand not to be dealt with, and you find yourself staring at the mysterious situation put forwards simply not breaking through with a much needed common thriller plot twist or breaking point. This is of course, until towards the very end. One central problem with the movie is that it is highly unlikely that one man would go his entire life without tripping or falling and wondering why there was no pain or injury. His mother would not wonder why he never got Chicken Pox? His father would never wonder why his knee did not bleed when he fell on it extremely hard during some catch? His wife would not wonder why when he slipped in the shower and smashed his head on the floor that he did not feel any pain? It just seems so unbelievably silly and impossible for this to happen and for nothing to be realized until a frickin train accident at the age of 40. The movie is essentially unrealistic beyond obvious proportions. The acting performances are easy and have no depth due to the pathetic script handed to the actors only to damage there impressive careers. Put simply, this movie is bad. If you wish to take my advice, avoid it by any means Expand

It may not be the best movie from the past eleven years, but for fans of M. Night Shyamalan, this is a very good film.

The premise about a man who survived the train accident and learns that a man who likes comic books and heroes is stalking him was spooky, but very good. The story was a very nice concept, but suffered from a weaker ending.

The acting was very solid and the chemistry between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson was well built together and the pacing was very decent.

The suspense was chilling and very satisfying it got me interested to want to know what's going on. The soundtrack from James Newton Howard was a lot of fun I want to check it out soon.

Unbreakable's weaker ending doesn't cover it up, but like The Sixth Sense and Signs, M. Night Shyamalan did his best to give me some scares.

The question ofIf ever a filmmaker vaulted from unknown to lionized status on the basis of one film, it was M. Night Shyamalan with “The Sixth Sense,” a little-anticipated ghost story that became one of the 10 highest grossers of all time. The question of whether this singular writer-director can deliver again will, by itself, guarantee a large turnout for “Unbreakable.” The answer is that he delivers much of the same: Same star, same preoccupation with telepathic and quasi-supernatural/religious powers, same hushed tone and deliberate pace, same sense of absolute control. But there are also serious differences: A weaker story, increased pretentiousness, some ill-advised narrative zigzags and a “surprise” ending that can’t begin to compare with the one in his previous picture. In addition to the draw repped by Shyamalan, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, yarn possesses sufficient intrigue to hook audiences and keep them on board much of the way, so despite the ultimate sense of letdown, B.O. prospects are very sturdy.

Following a mysterious prologue revealing the birth in 1961 Philadelphia of a black boy who enters the world with broken arms and legs, second scene is so good that it raises what are gradually revealed to be unrealistic expectations. David Dun (Willis) is sitting by the window on a train shuttling to Philadelphia from New York, where he’s had a presumably unsuccessful job interview.

When an attractive young woman, Kelly (Leslie Stefanson), sits down next to him, he discreetly slips off his wedding ring and quietly chats her up, only to see her get up and move when he pushes too far. After putting his ring back on, he stares outside at the onrushing scenery until it becomes apparent that the train is moving too fast, at which point a cut to David’s son (Spencer Treat Clark) flipping TV channels reveals the news of a terrible derailment.

Brief scene obliquely provides all the exposition the viewer needs to know — the status of David’s marriage, his job uncertainty, his willingness to move to New York — while superbly building a quiet sense of unease. Much of it is shot with an agile hand-held camera positioned behind the seats in front of David and Kelly, the cuts are all significantly timed, and the mix of sounds — the subdued vocal tones, the ambient noise of the train, the sudden whoosh of an oncoming diesel — is wonderfully subtle.

Such a sequence establishes a sense of total confidence that one is in the hands of a master storyteller and creates an automatic viewer willingness to follow wherever he chooses to go.

Some viewers will go along with all this, while others, like David himself, will resist. Because the mystery of where the story might be headed is sustained for so long, the film doesn’t go off the tracks all at once. But the superhero angle, which seems a bit odd when introduced, eventually feels all wrong, especially when invested with supernatural and spiritual dimensions that seem like holdovers from “The Sixth Sense.”

And while the earlier picture cast the sort of spell that would have been disrupted by any comic relief, the presence of pop culture refs via comics makes quite notable the absence of any humor or sense of fun, just as it makes its pretentions to deep meaning and self-importance all the more specious.

All the same, Shyamalan’s handling of individual sequences is often extremely impressive; he clearly knows exactly what he wants and how to achieve it. This time out, he receives a great assist from lenser Eduardo Serra, whose widescreen work within a subdued color scheme is enormously textured and arrestingly composed.

Also notable among the uniformly excellent craft contributions are Dylan Tichenor’s precision editing and James Newton Howard’s supple, supportive score.

In subdued, subtle form, Willis gently conveys the essence of a working-class man seemingly beaten down by life but mostly victimized by his own refusal to realize his true potential. Jackson lends his commanding presence and persuasive dialogue delivery to the odd role of Elijah, which never becomes fully dimensional enough despite its backstory of tragic vulnerability.

Wright Penn doesn’t do much with the flatly written wife part, and it’s during some of her domestic scenes with Willis a little more than an hour in that pic goes into lowest gear. As the couple’s son, Clark bears more than a passing resemblance to Haley Joel Osment, but the kid plays a decidedly peripheral role in this one.

Commendable especially for the well written dialogue and the several long shots throughout. Unbreakable can be slow sometimes, but ultimately is a well acted and performed dramatic thriller.

Night Shyamalan's take on the classic superhero origin story template is far more subdued than anything we've seen from the likes of Marvel, DC, or any of their imitators. There's no real action to speak of. Instead it's a very character-driven affair. One with a moody tone and set in a more grounded universe.

Shyamalan crafts a strong Batman/Joker dynamic between his two leads. They exist on opposite ends of the spectrum physically, but mentally they share a bond centered around trauma and unfulfillment. The themes of mental health are poignant. One man is severely depressed while the other has had his mind warped by pain. Neither knows where they're supposed to be in life and struggle because of it. When their paths inevitably cross this allows their relationship and individual backstories to have some genuine dramatic weight that we just don't get from superhero flicks today.

Another thing that sets Unbreakable apart is that it uses the established genre tropes in a self-aware manner. Actively deconstructing and analyzing comic comic books while celebrating them. It's also an entirely original story not based on any previously existing property.

It's hard to really pinpoint why my score for this won't be any higher. The twist underwhelming, but still emotional. The pacing is really slow, yet I was never once bored. Shyamalan wears his influences on his sleeve and tries to pull them into the real world. An interesting concept, although a little more excitement would have gone a long way. Night got so caught up in trying to keep things from ever getting too far fetched that we never get the full thrill of watching Willis experiment with his powers. However, in a time where that's all superhero films really do anymore I certainly appreciate the uniqueness.

The first half of the movie was awesome, but as Shyamalan movies tend to do, it got weird, in this case too weird. While I love Samuel L. Jackson, his character was just annoying and I didn't really consider him a threatening villain. Bruce Willis on the other hand was amazing as usual, but his character was kind of bland. Shyamalan wanted to keep the story as real and believable as possible, but a super hero who just can't get hurt and has no other real powers is just kind of dull. Though it always manage to entertain and it has your attention the whole time, I was never truly impressed by this one. The acting from Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robin Wright, was good, the child actor was terrible though. The premise was really interesting and came along interestingly. Ultimately, this one felt like an origin story for a superhero, so though I almost always against sequels, I am surprised one never arose from this film. Ultimately, this one was alright throughout and was well directed by M. Night Shyamalan, but it was never truly great. The pieces came together interestingly and I was enjoying it enough to give it a better rating, but then the twist ending came and I really started to not like this one. The ending is horrendous and compared to The Sixth Sense where the ending was really quite good, this one just felt forced and stupid. More than that, it felt more far fetched than the whole original premise itself. Really, this one stands as evidence of Shyamalan's eventual demise, as though it is well put together, the unnecessary twist undoes all that was good about the film prior to it. Overall, Unbreakable is a solid film that really does entertain and features some good acting, but the ending is just too bad to forgive and the film prior to the ending is nothing special either. Night Shyamalan film about David Dunne (Willis), an everyman, who becomes involved in a train wreck that leaves him mysteriously unscathed. With the help of a mysterious man (Jackson), Dunne soon learns that he is, in fact, an extraordinary man with superhuman attributes. Now, I know that the first mention of the name "Shyamalan" nowadays leads many people to think, ". . .ew 'The Last Airbender' ". However, there was a time when Shyamalan actually made pretty good movies. This, thankfully, is one of the only 3 he has made. "Unbreakable" is a truly compelling study of the narrative mechanics of comic books. I, being a big nerd who loves comic books, found this movie to be intensely interesting to watch because it clued me into things which I didn't know about them. Like the fact that a villains eyes are always portrayed to slightly bigger than the hero's because it shows that his view on the world is slightly more off-kilter than the hero's. And the fact that the hero's origin is often tied/interconnected with the villain's origin. These are just two of the many interesting concepts of comic book writing that are discussed throughout "Unbreakable". Now make no mistake - this movie isn't a documentary. Yes, it does discuss a lot of the methods comic book writers utilize to convey their very distinct messages, but it does this verbally and nonverbally. This movie maintains a very quiet, yet intensely brooding tone. This tone is amplified by the really somber and mesmerizing performance from Bruce Willis. The cinematography is really intelligently executed, as I found myself saying, "oh that was pretty cool/clever", to a very large amount of this film's shots. The ending could've used some work, but I'm sure with time I can learn to appreciate it. In the end, I found "Unbreakable" to be a very good film that delves deeply into some really cool subject matter. Expand

Night Shyamalan, it should be said that he is not a one trick pony. "Unbreakable", while not as impressive as "The Sixth Sense" is still a rather originally intriguing superhero movie in disguise. First off, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson give great, subtle performances. I thought Bruce Willis was better in "Unbreakable" as opposed to "The Sixth Sense" in almost every way. I felt him more as a character rather than just trying to deliver a performance. Samuel L. Jackson is probably at his most subtle. Don't get a me wrong, I love the usual performances he gives in Tarantino movies or pretty much anything else he is in. But you could feel he was going for something completely different from his other roles. It felt personal, absorbing and honestly unforgettable. The concept of this movie was genius, but it felt more like setup than an actually story. I guess I just wished this movie had something more than what I got, especially since it truly is a superhero movie in disguise. As for the big twist, I actually bought it. Like the one in "The Sixth Sense", when you go back and watch it, it all works. Overall, even though I wished there was more to this movie, it was still rather intriguing. I give "Unbreakable" a B+!

Unbreakable

Shyamalan's take on the comic book is much more appealing than they have ever been. And even though it is immensely practical and more human than any of such "superhero" tales, it still has an exuberant enthralling act to follow. It is much more compelling and satisfying than your usual thriller. The characteristics of the characters might be simple but the procedure of how they are projected, is a brilliant example of storytelling. The magnitude when such a case comes across your life, is depicted with fine details and explicit writing that keeps you busy through glorifying tiny little aspects of the narration.

The structure of the script isn't familiar at all, it isn't divided into various parts, it flows fluently. It might be a slow pill but it doesn't overchew stuff, in fact if anything it respects each piece of material with equal sincerity. It isn't your usual comic book feature. It is more talkative, it is weaved out to be completely crafty to the core. As once a character quips too, it isn't commercial at all. Willis is reserved and takes his time like he usually does. And since his character is confused and calculating for the most part of it, it dwells well for the character too.

Jackson on the other hand, is the convincer. He has to be more vocal and sensible. His well thought out theories lures you in on his viscous web. He is the mastermind and the puppeteer. Wright and Clark, the supporting cast, gets their own stand out moments and they hold on to it decently. Shyamalan's vision is sharp and jaggedly on mark, he is well aware of the trajectory of the storyline, and he works his way up accordingly. Unbreakable shatters your expectation about the comic book bubble, the perspective is perpetually fresh.

Well, I must confess I was expecting something more of this movie. Night Shyamalan has a lot of style and some talent that gave us a lot of good movies. But the movie lost itself in the details.

The plot is a true homage to the world of comics, telling us the story of a man, who works as a security guard in a stadium. He is like many of us, and even has marital problems to solve. But everything changes when he's boarded by Elijah Price, an African-American with a terrible and rare disease, that makes his bones so brittle as glass, that tells him that he's gifted with superhuman powers. Well, the plot seems appealing? Indeed, it's an original approach to the subject: comic's heroes and villains are mirrored in the main characters, as well on several references and allusions that arise discreetly: some camera angles, the raincoat at the end of the film etc. The main actors (Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson) are very competent and played their roles very well. Willis was particularly good, while perfectly embodying the emotional and psychological conflicts of his character.

But you are probably thinking "with so many good arguments, where the film lost it's way?" First of all, there are some situations not totally understandable and some details I think are contradictory, which may indicate that there were some mistakes in script's writing. In fact, it almost seems that writer has devoted most of his attention to the end of the film (we will talk about that later). The first, and perhaps the most obvious contradictory detail is the Elijah glass stick. It's simply incomprehensible that he uses a cane as fragile as their own bones. And how Elijah could meet Dunn's car to put his card on the windshield if both still didn't know each other? The origin of Dunn's powers is another problem since we don't know it's origin, unlike Elijah condition, which we knew it's caused by a disease. Another flaw is the fight where David commits murder, something that a superhero simply don't do (and remember, the movie tries to embody in Dunn's character the qualities of a superhero). In the comics, the "bad guys" are defeated and handed over to the authorities or die as a result of his own wickedness. When David Dunn kills with his own hands he are closest to a "vigilante" than a hero, no matter the good intentions.

Despite these negative notes, "Unbreakable" is a film that does what it sets out to do and entertains the audience very well, mainly due to the central idea of the plot, the excellent performance of the actors and the unexpected plot twist in the end. Without the final twist of the story, this movie probably would have been a disappointment, a brilliant idea for a movie that would have ended badly used. Thes surprising ending ultimately "saves" the film from that destiny, making the audience forget previous mistakes.

Telling us what happened in boring text instead of showing it to us is lazy and idiotic.
Apart from that, this is a pretty great film. It’s a comic book movie in disguise, with great direction and dialogue from Shyamalan supported by two great lead performances from Willis and Jackson and a PHENOMENAL score from James Newton Howard. It was ahead of its time for sure, and would probably be lauded as a modern classic if it was released in our current superhero-saturated culture.

This movie is great back to back hit for M. Night Shyamalan after The Sixth Sense. This movie showed us different kind of superhero drama.

After the introduction of Mr. Glass, you can tell that something isn't right but the suspense keeps on building and you can't tell what is happening until it is revealed. The most surprising thing about this film is how naturally suspense, drama and horror are blended together. Nothing really felt forced or unnatural in acting, pace, or action. The only thing which I didn't like in this movie was that the ending revealing scene was little bit rushed. Everything happened in maximum 5minutes. It looks rushed. They could have made that scene atleast 10 minutes long.

Overall, this movie should be given a try. This may prove good experience for you.

A refreshing take on the superhero theme. Not for people who think movies should always happily entertain. Not for the more pretentious art-filmers who can't get out of their own way. Thankfully, It's a movie for anyone inbetween.

Great movie! I wanted to watch it again just to put all the hints in context. [***SPOILERS***] The ending was perfect in tone with comic books and comic book movies. Every superhero needs a villian.

Not his best movie, but Bruce Willis did do a good job. It was not as good as Sixth Sense, but was just as interesting and also kept you wondering.

Despite the dissapointing but surprising ending, Unbreakable is a triumph, a glorious film that will make you grin with delight.

While it mostly appeals to people with knowledge about comic books, I think most people can appreciate this film if they're willing to go into it with an open mind and want to actively pay attention to its many story telling devices (e.g. not just dialog, since there's not a lot of it in this movie). A lot of people say the ending is unexpected, but maybe that's because they didn't pay attention. There were many foreshadowing moments like when the color blue was used for both the train ride (even the little girl had bright blue eyes) and for scenes involving a certain someone. Even Elijah's mom tells you straight up, "...this one has a surprise ending." The number 1 standout in this movie, though, is the camera work. Not only does it physically mirror comic book framing, but also mirrors how the framing of a comic book can often times be its own character and story telling device. I think a lot of directors lose sight of this in movies. The show "24" is a good example of how camera work can play a significant role in story telling, especially in seasons 1 and 5. If you like character development, use of colors, cinematography, comic books and are tired of the trashy and overly loud Hollywood marketing junk then give this movie a spin in your DVD player. Just a ok movie. I liked that he couldn't die or sustain an injury. The Mr. Glass easily gets hurt. The story would have been so much better if was just with Bruce Willis story and cut out Mr. Glass, or at the very least not make him a villain.
