A small but fascinating moral tale. Marion Cotillard is stunning as always. The movies feels a bit too much like a moral dilemma exercise, but it's effective.

It is also kind of an exploration about recovering from mental illness, but not completely. Ultimately its about overcoming.

Other than its insane premise, unbelievable in its all too mundane believability, it is a mostly pat story arch told with "realism" and a splendid performance from Marion Cotillard and not much more. It feels like the premise was concocted first and the characters (and by extension the mental illness) and ending tacked on to make it workable.

"Two Days, One Night" is an incredibly sensitive and thought-provoking film about empathy in a reality where consumerism and individualism prevails. One of the Dardenne's best.

Featuring a stirring lead performance from Marion Cotillard, the film is excellently written and directed by the Dardenne brothers. A subtle, flow of life type film, the movie really manages to hit home, even when our protagonist faces resistance. An entirely difficult choice is presented to each character in the film and the film does a great job portraying a fair and balanced look at that question. The film manages to also be a very good look at depression, as well as being quite thrilling. Real life drama has never been so thrilling before, yet this one has you on the edge of your seat waiting to see the outcome and how our characters will react. Overall, Two Days, One Night is a great film that is an ode to compassion and helping your neighbor. Expand

It's not only a story about a woman who has just recovered from depression and find out she can lose her job but also a story about strength and the importance of love and family. I just felt immersed in the film; beginning to end. Watching Sandra being such a flawed and damaged worker fight for her job (and emotional health) was truly an experience to treasure. Watching Marion Cotillard delivering one of her best is a highlight of cinema. Besides, this film has such an independent feel to it that just makes me fall in love more. So looking forward to the directors' next project. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A simple premise, Two Days, One Night brings together and emotionally trying task's mundane actions with depression and personal struggle. Marion Cotillard manages to make her illness live on the border of hurt and recovery. While each reaction to Sandra's desperate plea for help was similar, I was cheering for her from the sidelines.

The movie became somewhat monotonous after a while, hearing how many people Sandra had yet to talk to, really the politicking of it all. Two Days's redeeming quality was its humanness. As every human was unique, they had different reactions. Empathy, greed... It is a lot for a mentally ill woman to deal with, as we see.

It truly was a breath of fresh air to see a family, like Sandra in Manu's, that works and actually needs this income to survive. To be represented in film is gratifying, and the Dardennes were able to capture the essence of true necessity and desperation without completely losing hope.

If I had two days and one night to get back my job, I would be amazed knowing that this movie hit the fuse for great heartbreaking moments coming up and then soft them down with heartwarming moments.

Two Days, One Nights is a typically extraordinary social drama favoring subjects like work, family and money value, and mixed with the thriller of anxiety against time.

Marion Cotillard delivers one of her best performances to date in a film that unfortunately did not receive the attention it deserved.

that bird singing..

Deux Jours, Une Nuit

An idea that is barely of a daily episode, is projected with such fine details and exquisite writing that one cannot not feel for the characters revolving around it and drown into their world. Deux Jours, Une Nuit is an epitome of an 'out-of-the-box' concept, creativity and its originality that art is supposed to offer the viewers. The writer-director duo, Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne are familiar and of their art and the world they have created which even though is confined within few characters but still explores large part of the space in it. Marion Catillard breeds vulnerability, loss and affliction and pours it onto the screen with independent wings of hope that doesn't and won't need a stage or support from anyone; she is a revelation in this one. Deux Jours, Une Nuit is written with passion, executed and edited by such fine talents and performed and projected by a skilled actor that ups the ante of this feature onto the major league.

This is also a showcase of Marion Cotillard's undisputed acting prowess. It's great that I share the same birthday date with her :) The Dardenne brothers' use of wide, long shot and handheld camera is simply outstanding. They further add up to the honest and realistic sense of the film. That said, I couldn't help feeling that there's some kind of familiarity because of how schematic the plot seems to be. Its not a 'regular drama' as such - its, I suppose, a little understated but I found myself easily feeling sorry for the main character. I can't imagine having to be in her shoes, trying to get colleagues to change their mind in time to re-vote on the issue, with hopes of somehow saving her job. There are some quite good low key French dramas and this is one of them, due to the good performances and dialogue, plus it being relatively thought provoking. If your looking for a fast action packed film then this won't be for you but otherwise its certainly worth a watch. Expand
