It's like a beautiful blend of films like back to the future, Big Trouble in Little China etc and grindhouse flicks like Hobo with a Shotgun and Planet Terror. Although it's inspired it still manages to be very original. It's heart warming with some great action sequences and the soundtrack is out of this world. Turbo Kid just wants to be a hero, like we all did when we were kids. It's therefore easy to identify with him and imagine his excitement. A beautiful film with tons of soul. The score is great, the visuals are ok, and the acting is exactly what it needed to be. The characters all have clear motive which is probably what confused so many of the Hollywood nonsense swilling critics who gave it poor reviews.

A must watch for anyone who enjoys classic 80's action movies. BMX Bandits meets Big Trouble In Little China, meets Mad Max, meets many other classics from the 80's. This is definitely up there with the best movies of 2015.

It reeked of low-budget, shoe-string, duct-tape crudeness in it's production. My goodness, how far Michael Ironside has fallen, making movies of this caliber. Well, I'll never get the 90 minutes of my life back that I spent watching this dystopian movie of a rehashed, warmed-over, been-there done-that theme of surviving a nuclear apocalyspe. If you want to see a decent dystopian, post-atomic, apocalyptic move, go see either of the first two Mad Max movies or the recent one called Fury Road. Those movies wrote the book on post-atomic, apocalyptic, dystopian futures. Expand

And this already after twenty minutes.

I am not talking about the male lead, a boy who could have walked right out any eighties flick, or the female lead, who has an uncanny resemblance to a much younger Jodie Foster, but about a Indiana Jones look alike with the attitude of a Crocodile Dundee thrown in. Although perhaps he might resemble Bruce Willis from Die Hard more. This was that other guy. Not quite the lead but that other guy. You know, the one that grunts them one-liners. Preferably with a cigar or a stick of dynamite in his mouth , but then we all know that smoking anything isn't allowed anymore cause it is unhealthy, even if you do not light them. And certainly not in teen features!

But hold on...Something distracted me while I was watching the movie. Like someone waving a hand just on the periphery of your vision. I was trying to figure out who the target audience was supposed to be. I couldn't quite grasp it. Maybe because I am too silly to think that a movie with teens as protagonists cannot be mixed with a horror movie along the lines of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2?
Who was I kidding? With a post-Saw generation almost anything has become mainstream, be your own judge by deciding if that is good or bad.

So confused by this movie I decided to look up the genre. According to the wikipedia this is an action horror comedy film. And it was supposed to be retro as well. So here is a new genre for you: a retro eighties action horror comedy film. Oh yeah.

Retro? Eighties? What was this movie then mimicking? It couldn't be the Breakfast Club or Back to the Future, nor Blade Runner or War Games. The one thing that sprang to mind was: Mad Max: The Road warrior. I just saw Mad Max: Fury Road and mentally traced the series back to its beginnings, but I never could quite get the connect with the fountains of blood erupting from hacked off body parts. But then slasher movies aren't really my thing: too squeamish.

So I went from:; it's an retro eighties kids movie; no, it's an retro eighties mad max movie with a kid as the lead, to; it's a retro eighties horror mad max movie with a kid as the lead. And after twenty minutes when the full force of flying crap slammed me in the face it dawned on me: this one smells like... a low budget movie that is trying really really hard to get a cult status because that is the only thing that would safe if from being buried in in the waste bin of movie history forever.. Which is the only funny thing about it.

No wait. There is something else. The most absurd thing about this movie is actually that somebody dares to give it a score that puts it it he same range as any of the aforementioned eighties movies.

Now that sir, that... is just plain silly.

It reminded me of Space Station 76 in that it was a comedy conceived and executed as a movie written and produced in an earlier era.

The filmmakers nailed the look, feel and sound of the 1980s post-apocalyptic low-budget genre.

Turbo Kid would have been right at home on a 1988 drive-in double feature bargain night with Solarbabies or the original Road Warrior.

As with Space Station 76, the visuals are funny but not funny enough to shore up the very basic story that is the movie's core. Once you've chuckled at the bikes and way human arteries spout blood like a Las Vegas fountain, there's not much else to do with this one but wait for the end.

You should see it but don't expect to love it.

Apparently faithfully emulating a crappy 1980's low budget B movie is so avant garde and relevant to the zeitgeist that it ceases to be a crappy 1980's low budget B movie and instead is reborn as well-crafted homage to the childhood of a whole generation. If you somehow happen to LIKE crappy 1980's low budget B movies, this will certainly leave you satisfied. If you're expecting a movie that would not have gotten a 3.5/10 had it actually been released in the 80's and reviewed in the 80's, you're going to be sorely disappointed. It speaks to something that the professional reviewers that HAVE been in the business that long say as much in a long suffering fashion. Expand

The quality of it and the enjoyment you'll garner from it largely depends on your level of sobriety during the film. My friend and I watched this film completely on accident, while tripping on acid and it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. But once I went to watch it again sober to fully adsorb the story, it wasn't nearly as good. There is a certian level of nostalgia with the film, given the colors, topics, over the topic violence and feeling of a video game film, unfortunatly, the nostalgia can't carry it all the way.

If you want a great night tripping with friends, go ahead and watch this film. If you are looking for a excellent film while sober, look elsewhere. 5 out of 10 while sober, 7 out of 10 while tripping balls.

Inspired by the comics to defeat an enemy.

It was made in the style of the 80s movie and the story sets in the future, that mean in the late 90s. If your childhood were the 90s, probably you would have seen plenty of the 80s sci-fi films and this one is dedicated to the fans of that era. Kind of semi-superhero movie like 'Super' and 'Defendor'. Other than that this film has nothing to do with 'New Kids Turbo' and its sequel 'Nitro' as I initially presumed it might the third in the series.

I thought it was a pretty cool flick, so much fun. Sort of replicates the recent 'Mad Max' film, but both the flicks came into the production at a same time and this one is not all about the chasing or even a road flick. So I think it just inspired by the previous trilogy from that franchise, where automobiles are replaced by the BMXes here. Kind of eco-friendly movie!

As the many post-apocalyptic themes depicted, this one as well prioritised about a regional conflict for the source of water. A territory where a ruthless man controlled it and he kills who pose a threat to his crown. There comes an act of revenge from a boy and a girl along a man who challenge him. Who's going to that win the battle is what the finale of the movie.

"A man never knows how strong he is
until being strong is the only choice he has."

The first impression was the movie is for all, especially for the kids, but once the action parts begin to take place, my stance has changed. There are no high-end stunts, but too much of blood and gore. Although, nothing was so serious, somehow keeps entertaining and sometimes slightly disgusting, but the momentum was held at a moderate pace throughout the film.

The character Apple was so sweet and cute who actually lifted the movie's spirit with her funny, bubbly part, but also disappoints to learn the what's her kind is. Pretty much she helped to bring faintly a romantic atmosphere around which I was not expected. A simple story and a simple twist with the good characters and the fine supporting visuals.

Definitely an above average, but still not that awesome, excepting it is very enjoyable for the first watch. The filmmakers were the quite newcomers, but proved enough with their abilities, under a limited budget to give an acceptable standard flick. If you are okay with the B flicks, then it won't upset you, except you are not familiar with those types. I think it will hit a cult status moving into the next decade and so on among the B movie fans.

Well, the overt 80's throwbacks are there, but the tone is a 180° turn which allows for audience investment and tension. Characters are defined and fun, our protagonist grows and overcomes challenges such as learning to open up to others. For a smaller film, they overcome the obstacle of smallness by illustrating the massive wasteland through "long shots" and even a cantina scene. The gore is disgusting but goofy enough that I laughed out loud several times. Michael Ironsides should be in everything. Apple is a delight. The film was made by people who understand film, have passion for it, and show it. Expand

This film is in my opinion a masterpiece of 80's retro nostalgia cinema. It does parody the many conventions of 80s films but also has heart to it and does feel like it's own film. It is bloody fun for the whole family.
