Charlize Theron delivers yet another outstanding performance in a multifaceted role that's not everything it appears to be. The film's excellent script and uniform pacing -- elements not always present in the works of Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody -- make for captivating, thoughtful viewing that's likely to touch viewers of all stripes, not just those whose stories seemingly resemble those of the protagonist. The film stars Charlene Theron, Mackenzie Davis and Ron Livingston in this story of a suburban New York housewife and mother of two who is expecting her third. It is fitting to review this film on Mother’s Day for it is indeed a testament to the role women play in both child bearing and child rearing. Ms. Theron gives an awesome portrayal as she struggles with physical and mental stresses that so many mothers face on a daily basis. Gaining 50 pounds for the role, Ms. Theron proves that she is as talented and beautiful an actress at any weight. I give the film an 8 with a cautionary note to the viewer that the last 10 minutes of the film will make the prior 85 much more meaningful. Expand

Marlo is suffering from sleep deprivation and the stresses of raising three kids, including a newborn so although first reluctant to accept the help of a night nanny she surprises herself by forming a unique bond with the young free-spirited night nanny, Tully (Mackenzie Davis).

The script is simple, funny and very well executed. Tully is extremely immersive film with lots of heart and gives us a raw insight into motherhood. Theron's performance is stunning I quickly forgot I was watching a film. Every scene feels incredibly real, and this is only reinforced by the chemistry between Theron and Davis. When you get the casting right and you've got a good story the rest should just fall into place. Recommended, but be warned that if the thought of having kids already terrifies you then Tully does not do a whole lot to help those fears.

It’s a flawed film, but it defies expectations in the best sort of way. What’s expected to be a feel-good family-centred dramedy actually turns out to serve as a smart story about the unforgiving dark struggles and sacrifices that necessarily accompany motherhood.

It does a good job at staying down-to-Earth. The characters and dialogue feel very genuine thanks to the actors performing not as extraordinary, but purely ordinary people, and the script they go off of to encapsulate such real-life dialogue. Unfortunately, sometimes the movie immerses itself too deeply in reality and provides some scenes and lines that feel too monotonous and ordinary, like they aren’t integral enough to be story to have a reason to be present. Another result of the realism of the story is that we’re presented with dialogue that feels somewhat awkward or out of place or just isn’t interesting at all. The realistic story certainly makes it relatable, but that’s counteracted by the inclusion of the boring aspects of real life.

There’s a plot twist at the end of the film that I certainly won’t spoil, but is just as much of a double-edged sword as the aforementioned aspects of the story. It’s thoroughly unpredictable and causes the audience to deeply appreciate and reflect on the endless sacrifices that mothers make to raise their children, but looking back on the rest of the story leading up to that point it just doesn’t make sense. The characters’ behaviour up until the twist doesn’t seem to match up with the reality that’s revealed at the end of the film. Thus the sweet overall message is unfortunately muddled slightly.

But in the end, those flaws don’t really matter as much as they should because the movie is just so unapologetically raw and real. It’s sober reflection on uncomfortable struggles of human life is bolstered by relatable humour and performances and Tully becomes a film that is essential viewing for everyone who has or has had a mother figure in their life. Yeah she's been a badass action heroine over the last few years, but I mean more than that. She is incredible in this - emotionally complex, alive, real in a way that doesn't feel like acting. The script is funny and poignant, it suggests that writer Diablo Cody has grown into a mom much like the title character, and her trademark hip witty dialogue is suppressed, only showing up as the occasional zinger from Marlo in what feels like a sudden upsurge of life for her, a part of who she used to be.

The movie is undone a bit by its "twist", a twist that's not really a twist if you have any wits about you, and one that doesn't make or break the movie but does hamper the middle third I feel. Too much time is spent examining the weird night nanny situation instead of Marlo being in a self-reflexive dialogue with her younger self.

She is simply perfect in the film. All of the acting is very good though. The reason I think this movie is a 70-75 is the gimmicky explanation at the end. There could have been other ways for it to be revealed than the circumstances under which it was revealed in the film. A doctor's reply to a statement the husband makes near the moment of the reveal is sublime. The fact that this movie is not an in depth look at postpartum depression is fine; I don't fault the film for that. I am fine with the gimmick. I just didn't like the revelation of the gimmick. Still this is still a very interesting movie with a tremendous performance by a gifted actress at the peak of her prowess. Expand

"Tully" not only represents another solid dramedy with its sights set on providing an honest and funny post-modern commentary on parenting and adulthood, but it's also one of the first ones I've seen to actually possess a satisfying conclusion as well. This is a deeply effective emotional journey with a lot of insightful and refreshing words to spare on human development, self-care, and maternal needs, but it's also not one of those movies looking to point fingers of blame or chastise the audience in doing so. It's celebratory, sad, hilarious, yet tragic all at the same time. And it harbors a real wallop of a third act that honestly made the entire movie for me. Expand

Charlize Theron first came to my notice playing in "The Cider House Rules" in 1999 and by 2003 I stated that if she didn't win the Oscar for "Monster" I would never go to the movies again! Thankfully she won and I have been following her career ever since working in all kinds of films playing very varied roles.

After seeing her in the Christine Dior cologne adds I felt she was the most beautiful woman in the world and her role, physically, as Marlo in "Tully" could be no more different.

"Tully" is a film that might be very difficult for a man to understand unless he goes with a woman to give him basic notes. The film shows the realities of parenthood through the eyes and thoughts of a mother with three kids. Marlo loves her kids and her husband (Ron Livingston) but this is not about her relationships with them or her wealthy brother (Mark Duplass) or his so perfect wife (Elaine Tan). Marlo's son (Asher Miles Fallica) is thought as being weird, has behavior issues but hasn't been fully diagnosed. There is no doubt post-mortem depression has taken over Marlo and Theron doesn't hesitate to show how it can wear down a mother mentally and physically. Her scene with a school principal where she lets loose lashing out at her because her kid might not fit in shows the pure heartbreak and pain this woman is suffering.

Then something happens to turn everything around. Her brother offers to pay for a month for a night nurse/nanny played by Mackenzie Davis. Her Tully will work from 10:30 PM to 6:30 AM to help Marlo get some sleep, rest, maybe have sex with her husband, all in all make life, easier, manageable and a chance to bond with someone which she desperately needs. I very seldom ever give 'spoilers' and this may be one but I would have to see the picture again to see if my theory works. Like the kid who saw dead people or believes Mary Poppins can just fly in under her umbrella and slove everything I really wonder (spoiler!!) if Tully is real?

Director Jason Reitman with a screenplay by Diablo Cody and a first-rate performance by Charlotte Theron is certainly worth seeing if for no other reason than to let me know if you agree with my theory or not!

Guess what really moves me enough to make me want to initiate change in my lifestyle? True problems discussed in realistic motion pictures. A fine example:

Tully says motherhood means the individual lets her physical form swell to the point where she can’t jog full speed without facing breast leaks. It is an effective little sample of passionate cinematic artists utilizing so much from so little, driven by the work of Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Juno), especially once their efforts early on breathe out an abrupt post-maternity mundaneness montage that reveal how much work it is caring for a newborn.

I particularly want to thank Charlize Theron–she reportedly put on 50 lbs. for the role, a level of commitment matching some of film history’s most iconic performances: Robert De Niro in Raging Bull, Tom Hanks in Cast Away, and Charlize Theron again in Monster. Her red-eyed exhaustion snapping into outbursts paid off big time.

Charlize plays the main mom, Marlo, alongside Mackenzie Davis (night nanny Tully), a natural chemistry between them built to improve her suffering persona. While Charlize resembles the real helpless baby, Mackenzie flaunts her huge giddy smile in sweet contrast like your favorite babysitter. Both remarkable women bear the explicitly different burden of portraying a common difficulty to miraculous success.

In fact, the entire cast contributes a feel of unimaginable pain: The actress playing the teacher of Marlo’s son especially plays well off Charlize during their few moments together. Ron Livingston as Marlo’s husband, Drew, starts off passive then gradually looks conflicted after Marlo’s condition eventually hits his inattentive attitude.

I find such movies important because they show hospitality, whether under employment or free-will, turning far more important than we realize. Based on my own experience, I know a couple who spent years seeking out adoption; just when all hope almost left the plan, someone finally chose them to raise her newborn! Unfortunately enough though, they baby was born a mere few weeks before the wife got cancer. I, a twenty-five-year-old single man, cannot imagine this family’s pain, although still heard plenty of stories about their simultaneous major life changes, thus, made them breakfast one morning to make one day a little easier for the parents and kids.

That happened several months ago, yet still connects back to Tully‘s mission statement: However you can help another during times of great demand, do it. The weight of actions may surpass your knowledge, but all kindness lasts forever, like how a mentor teaching a child will last an entire career.

Though be warned: the horrific aspects of a beautiful new life depicted here can unintentionally scare you out of any desire to start a family, mainly because the focus is too much on the baby and not as much on Marlo’s daughter, Sarah, who could’ve been written out easy—she does nothing important. Likewise, Marlo’s sister-in-law also does nothing important, aside from being there beside her husband’s night nanny recommendation. Back to Marlo, she watches a gigolo program on late nights, as if a parent can freely watch porn while caressing her newborn, consequently ruining most of the sympathetic appeal that would’ve made Marlo a better written character.

Now, within the script’s other written endeavors, it succeeds. The details of this work imitate when one gear of a machine breaks loose, causing the entire mechanism’s demise. Through focusing on displayed cookies to open a café scene, Marlo’s contemplative diet habits throughout pregnancy affects her coffee order decision. Right upon meeting Marlo’s son, Jonah, she softly scrubs his entire body, then later he screams over which parking spot mom should take. She is unaided by Drew, who retreats into the bedroom at night on a post-work gaming headset like a captain on helm of his ship, Marlo left to swab the deck.

Numerous sequences can sum up how it feels to watch Tully: an apparently single melodic dream of a mermaid swimming far away, its blue highlighter hue contrasting the almost always tungsten tinted image, accurate to tranquility. The visual effects team crafted an ever-graceful digital mermaid; despite those surreal underwater views, its right-there-next-to-them atmosphere never loses itself.

In the end, thanks to everyone involved, Marlo becomes a grand woman empowerment figure in how she dawns decorative makeup to conceal her veins. She proves how this reflective experience ultimately submerges you inside an inadvertent chaotic reality until an angel pulls you out to transport self-peace.

"There is no there anymore"
Marlo, is just about to get birth for her third child, she already passes through a lot of struggle with her two first and have problems with her mental quality, she got depressed, a husband that spend a lot of time out of home, seeing that her brother suggests for her to get a babysitter for the night, and from that she got to learn a lot about herself. Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody.
I learned so much with this movie, let's begin with that, this movie is definely the one that i have seen that better represents the maternity, before anything else this film made me reflect, like how much did Charlize's character seemed to suffer, how much struggle, how much rage and pain, with so many difficult, and the father was nowhere close most of the time, this movie got me to see that i gotta be better and i will help my wife and give my blood to help her and take care of our children, i really felt for Marlo in here and was wishing all the time for she to get better and help, so this movie is also this, a communication for men about having a child and taking care of it. Another thing is really big in this movie, is for you to understand that time flies, and you gotta be ready and accept, you can let your past help you, yes, but don't let it get on your back like an extra weight, because that could turn in a big regret. The movie does a great job in metaphorical ways tell us, that the past is gone, we can still get somethnings from when we were 20, but when we got 40, somethings we just will just not be able to recreate. So i think that the biggest lesson in here, is that first, we gotta enjoy each time, no matter what, because things gonna end, and we gonna miss it, and also we gotta learn how to make ourselves health and adapted to each moment, because we will have up and downs, and if we don't deal properly when we are down, we won't get up again.
The narrative in this film is perfect, it flows perfectly and you never get bored or anything close to that, every single scene count and have a meaning for the full story that they are telling, it can put the atmosphere for each moment work, so you got angry with her, depressed with her, happy with her and also got hope together, you can totally feel the weight during the scenes, you can feel so much everything in here. Right at the moment where the character Tully enters in this story, things got so different, the atmosphere of the movie changes and everything got calmier and apparentely easier, you can totally feel the rest that Marlo got and you feel good about it. One thing that i really appreciate when movies can provide for the public, is that each time that you gonna watch it, each time of your life, you gonna get a different perspective of it, as a 20 years old person full of health, you gonna see it in one way, as a mother, a father, old, this have different ways to get consumed. Another thing, is that one giant plot thing that happen in the last, some people will got it before, some will get only in the moment, but the fact is that it is awesome, risky and beautiful, it is that kind of plot twist that when you got it, you gotta rewatch the whole movie again, and it will be seen in a different way, some kind of Tyler Durden kind of thing, i love that so much.
The photography in here is great, the color palette changes according to how the situation is, it can get gray and darker, so as colorful and happy. There are moments where the visual is also subtle to tell us things, story beyond the script and i love that. The edit in this film is really nice as well, the flowing is on point.
The soundtrack is great, there musics composed by Rob Simonsen, there are some musics that are really beautiful.
Charlize Theron is perfect in this film, she is a mother in real life and definely know exactly the struggle and the happiness envolving in here, she convince 100% of each one of her feelings, her rage, her depression, her necessity, and the relation with her younger self. Mackenzie Davis is also perfect, when she comes into the scenes she just shines with her giant smile, the director used her very well, she can bring back the spirit into a young a health person, full of dreams and stuff. Ron Livingston is also good, his job was easier, but he did it well.
Tully is wonderful and perfect movie, it is entertaining, let you full of thoughts philosophizing, in can be got in different ways depending in wich part of your life you are in, there is a fantastic plot twist that makes the movie be rewatchable right after watching it the first time, it gives a perfect idea of how motherhood can be and does give you some sort of idea, that how to be better, how to help better, how to be more present.

Gringo is a comedy, Tully is not. In fact, it's kind of depressing, so that was annoying. Anyway, it's pretty good if you want to see a Mother played by Charlize Theron struggle with the pain of breastfeeding and have to go to extreme measures to relieve it thanks to a midwife character played by Mackenzie Davis (Tully) that comes to her rescue. I’m not sure Charlize wore a fat suit for this or had a great stunt double likely for some parts but the pregnant suit looks phenomenal! Another interesting scene is when she is carrying that extra weight from being preggers, she decides to have a foot race with a woman in booty shorts and hyperventilates, another strange but believable pregnant woman moment. She has a bad day and the struggle is real as the kids say. Overall it's more like an arthouse film for the slice of life Sundance style depressing story but a good story. Expand

3 Out Of 5

Tully is a character driven dramatic feature about parenting gone "fair" rather than being right or wrong. The core relationship between Theron and Davis that fuels the feature throughout the course of it, is sweet and easily likable; a safe play by the makers to lure the audience in. It is rich on technical aspects like its stunning cinematography, perfect editing and is beautifully shot that makes it supremely watchable. The writing isn't as smart or strong as the makers think, since the gist of the premise is easily predictable and single-layered where the audience after that, finds itself waiting for the closure and at-times also in awe of the journey. Reitman's sewing accuracy, Davis and Theron's sharp performance and the unpredictable mirrors shattered by the makers are the high points of the feature. The screenplay by Diablo Cody may be adaptive, gripping and thought-provoking but is also extracted from a textbook formula which isn't as deep as it seems, and instead is a mere one-dimensional hoax whose effort is feasible but not plausible.

Mackenzie swoops in and steals the show with her soothing and mellow tone that travels through screen among the viewers to tell them, "She has got this." The transition of the feature after her appearance is clearly visible as anticipated by Reitman which shows his excellence on execution. While depicting a series of event or a period passing by, Reitman's eerie perspective on depicting it stands alone and remains with you even after leaving the screen. As mentioned earlier, the performance is one of the strength of the feature especially, Charlize Theron as a protagonist and Mackenzie Davis in her supporting role. Tully has malleable characters that breaks into bits and pieces rather than bending in accordingly which makes it a rickety risk and somehow rotten the core in its last stage leaving the only base standing wide and tall which the makers fortunately, had established earlier.

This movie delivered a realistic but sometimes weird portrayal of a mother's life. As a viewer, you get a few hints here and there and you always feel entertained. The unexpected happens eventually. Great story and great acting.

Charlize Theron gives life to the realities of motherhood and the unexpected challenges that come from fulfilling one's dreams of becoming a mother. It'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, and it'll make you want to watch it all over again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was pretty good. The writing was good, and I really like the twist, but this is just ‘Fight Club’, let’s be honest here. Still, I thought it was a fresh take on that very similar premise. Also, Charlize Theron is just amazing in this movie. Expand

Examining something rarely seen on screen

The film tells the story of Marlo (Charlize Theron), a New York suburbanite pregnant with her third child. Her husband, Drew (Ron Livingstone) is loving, but somewhat neglectful, showing more interest in playing video games than helping Tully maintain the house and family. Clueless about the pressures of motherhood, he fails to notice when Marlo begins to show signs of post-natal depression. However, shortly after the baby's birth, Marlo's wealthy brother Craig (Mark Duplass) hires a night nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis) to help take some of the pressure off Marlo. Reluctant to embrace the idea at first, Marlo soon forms a tight bond with Tully, who introduces Marlo to a lifestyle she had never imagined.

Tully is one of those films that the less you know about it before seeing it, the better. Featuring committed performances from Theron and Davis, the film is written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, a partnership which also produced Young Adult (2011), in which Theron also starred. There's a definite thematic uniformity between the two films, as if they exist in an almost sliding doors-like relationship to one another. My only real issue with Tully is that the supporting characters are very thinly drawn - Drew, the well-meaning but ineffectual husband, is especially void of substance. But the nature of the story, to a certain extent, necessitates this. In any case, this is an excellent study of an issue very rarely put on-screen - imperfect motherhood. A word of warning though; neither the poster, nor the trailer do the film any favours whatsoever. It's funny in places, but this is not a comedy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I heard this movie was a warning for prospective parents. I honestly thought it was going to be a run-of-the-mill family movie, the trials and tribulations of parenthood blah blah but WOW was I wrong. It's marketed well and mid way through starts going to places I never saw coming. And that twist ending, the fact this movie even HAD a twist is amazing. Really commanding performances and testament to Diablo Cody. Highly recommended Expand

It was on my watchlist throughout the entire last year! I finally saw it, and I LOVED it!

The first act is the best without a doubt; it's solid, intimate, and relatable. We also get to know a lot of things about the characters that are fairly enough to flesh them out. Most importantly, Marlo, the protagonist that is played by the amazing Theron, who effortlessly delivered a performance that is definitely worthy to be nominated for an Oscar.

Near the end of the first half of the movie I felt that the movie is going to take a familiar path to continue its story, as the real problem has been solved so early. That what happens, except for the unorthodox way it happens with. This unique way of storytelling didn't redeem the issue of solving the problem only after the first half of the movie (which has some consequences that I consider the real issue with this movie), but it helped to delve deeper into the main theme of the movie, and hence gave us the moral at the end in a fulfilling way. This disguised-as-a-plot-twist way also added to the "quirkiness" of the movie. Case in point, the brilliant use of foreshadowing through the editing.

The aforementioned "consequences" are the major issue I have with this movie, simply because the new problem of the second half of the plot came out of nowhere. So I wasn't surprised when I found that the movie began to lost me at the end of the second act, and completely lost me before the last 10-15 minutes, when I began to care about the characters once more after the reveal of the "plot-twist".

Such a warm and a bit "quirky" hidden gem that captures the psychological process of maturity and maternity in a way that is both sincere and raw.

It depicts one clearly very tired mother who is put under a lot of stress due to her kids and finds a more youthful side to her via the newly employed nanny. I imagine a lot of people can relate to the situation...its not exactly funny but its somewhat entertaining and perhaps re-assuring to see how things develop. It features some reasonably strong language and sex references, so its not one for the whole family to watch. Its a bit amusing and mildly entertaining but no more than that, I'd say. I suppose I'd recommend this, yes, if only for the depiction of a down beaten youngish mum regaining her youthful identity. Expand

This shows the deep impact of Tron's review. He is so determined and strong in act and has taken it seriously that he is undoubtedly one of the most effective and best contemporary actors in the history of cinema. By choosing complex and different roles and presenting strong performances, he has been able to move the boundaries of cinema acting. He is unique. In this movie too, the movie turns on his heels. The movie Tali is a successful and good movie, but it is a bit too fantasy. Expand
