As remakes go pretty good, but it is still a remake. So it loses points for originality. The ending was to dragged out and ended up way to dour for my liking.

And even if it were a remake, it is one of the better ones if so. While I did like the 1969 very much, although I didn't like Kim Darby, this version does make some improvements, such as the pace and Mattie. But it also has some hindrances, the ending is abrupt, and some of the characters perhaps are not quite as intriguing as they are in the 1969 film, Rooster especially has a more somewhat cantankerous personality there.

Like all the Coen Bros movies, True Grit is beautifully shot, the scenery is stunning and there are some typically quirky moments in the cinematography. The story is compelling, and the dialogue is surprisingly droll which enhances the bleak atmosphere even more. The direction is superb, Carter Burwell's score is wonderfully atmospheric, the pace is more secure here and the final shoot out which stood out in the 1969 film is glorious. The performances are also really good. Jeff Bridges had the great John Wayne to compete with, not an easy feat at all, and while he is a more monotone Rooster Cogburn he is a revelation charisma and performance wise. Matt Damon impresses too, and Hailee Steinfeld is a big improvement on Kim Darby and comes very close to outshining her co-stars.

All in all, a great film. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The Cohen brothers re-telling of the 1969 western is not only an improvement but a western masterpiece in it's own right.
Sharp writing with a touch of humour, excellent performances from it's three leads and beautifully shot this is a must see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely one of the best films in genre. Jeff Bridges playing of the permanent drunk US-Marshal Reuben „Rooster“ Cogburn is very cool to see him, also the kind of father figure he becomes for Mattie is just great. Speaking of Mattie, Hailee Steinfeld‘s portrayal of a 14 year old intelligent girl, who knows a lot more you‘d expect is cute and always great. Also the polarity with her being smart and knowing a lot in legal things, but on the other side that she wants revenge for her father‘s dead was absolutely great . I wasn’t quite the biggest fan of Matt Damon‘s Laboeuf but he also had his moments and Josh Brolin‘s portrayal of tje bad guy Tom Chaney was just perfect. The ending sequence is sad. Overall i loved that movie. Expand

I liked Mattie Ross's (played by Hailee Steinfeld) self assuredness, her confidence and ability to stand up for herself perhaps better than some may expect of a young teenage girl in the times of the true old wild west. Its a sobering watchI liked Mattie Ross's (played by Hailee Steinfeld) self assuredness, her confidence and ability to stand up for herself perhaps better than some may expect of a young teenage girl in the times of the true old wild west. Its a sobering watch at times, with a variety of characters. Its quite tense, atmospheric and reasonably quiet at times, with the noise of the wind blowing being quite clearly heard. It has a sombre and mysterious feel to it which I quite liked too. Its safe to say there's plenty of time for viewers to contemplate the fate of the various characters, namely Reuben Cogburn (played well by Jeff Bridges) and Mattie Ross.

This is certainly not in any way a sentimental re-telling of the wild west, so its not quite 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?' territory, although this is a Coen brothers film. As Westerns go, I thought this was quite a good one. Worth a watch.

The music played isn't especially noticeable but I suppose it does add to the sense of atmosphere during scenes in which we see the main characters trekking across the land. I suppose this is a film about finding out other peoples true characters, putting trust in to others, whether for right or for wrong. I enjoyed it overall.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate it when stories like this almost always progress by chance. They find Chaney right after everyone gives up. There are way too many moments where characters are saved in extremis by another while being confronted to insurmountable difficulties.
Gunfights are great but you will quickly get the fact that bad guys always fight with paintball guns. Good guys kill the bad ones with one bullet while La Boef's critical injury is fixed in few days. And I don't even speak about Cogburn who is able to carry Mattie even if he has a bullet in the shoulder and that his horse clearly fell on his leg.

However the story is original, characters are lovable even if the scenarists sometimes over-stereotyped them. The atmosphere is awesome, the soundtrack is great, the visuals and lighting are awesome. Acting is incredible excepting for Jeff Bridges who alwas has the same face and expression all along. Dialogues oscillate between interesting and very well written to lame and boring. There are as many successful jokes as there are unsuccessful ones.

Eu gostei do estilo, e pude aproveitar bastante.

A fotografia é bela, e possui alguns planos lindíssimos. Gostei da OST também, apesar de não me chamar tanto atenção.

A great Western movie.

In this movie, a young teenage girl embarks on a risky Wild West trip to avenge her father's death in the company of a veteran "ranger" who didn't want her as a travel companion. I confess that I am not a fan of western movies, I think it was an extremely mistreated genre in the past, but I decided to make an exception for this because of how much I heard very well about him as well as the actors involved. Of course, having the Cohen Brothers ensure the direction and writing of the script also piqued my curiosity. I already know enough of their work to know it's worth the risk. Only now, as I documented myself a bit to write this critique more clearly, did I realize that the film takes advantage of material from an older one, not quite a remake because the plot is greatly modified by the Cohen. I did not watch both films to prove it, but I give credit to everything I read because it agrees with what I know of the Cohen's creativity.

The interpretation of the actors is excellent. I expected no less. Matt Damon made a restrained but credible appearance, but it was the perfect duo of Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld (the latter in their movie debut!) That dominated the movie and leveraged the action. They are really to be congratulated! I think Steinfeld's young age and inexperience caused some shame and prevented his nomination for awards as best actress, including by the conservative Hollywood Academy. I understand that, but it was really unfair because the young woman deserved the merit of this nomination, not the "demotion" to Supporting Actress.

Technically, the movie is flawless. The Cohen Brothers, as detailed as ever, did not miss every detail. Light, shadow, cinematography are ideal, camera angles are impeccable, the soundtrack works perfectly well. Historical details, such as sets and costumes, deserve a particular draw for the positive. Pleasing to the eye and taste, they do not shock or steal our attention from the plot itself, but they do a great job in transporting the public to space and time, striving for historical rigor.

This movie definitely helped change my conception of Western movies. I am sure that I will give more opportunities to films of this genre.

The cinematography is honestly impeccable. The silence of this film is handled with the utmost care. The only complaint that I have is that the Baroqian take on the language in the film comes off as clunky, and occasionally takes the steam out of an otherwise stirring scene. All in all, this is a great western that does deserve to be watched. Expand

True Grit

Carrying out one's typical textbook western theme and offers it a familiar tale to feed on the audience for almost around 110 minutes, is no ordinary job. Fortunately, the responsible team in here, is trustworthy and doesn't fail to deliver too. The Coen Brothers; as usual is no short on execution and this time has got appropriate editing on their side. The real game changer of the feature is their smart adaptation of Charles Portis' novel that is not only gripping but sensibly thought-provoking. The background score and the costume design is apt for the tone of the feature. The performance is strong and something that factors a lot in its favour, reason being a great star cast on its side. And addition to that, the performance given by them is appreciative too, especially by the protagonist Jeff Bridges who is supported well enough by Hailee Steinfield, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin (no matter how much runtime he gets in here). The writing is more practical than usual western feature does, as there is too much practicality involved in it that sends out this eerie vulnerable feeling in the audience for the characters. True Grit breeds essential sentiments in its self-created grittiness, but still somehow fails to draw out the anticipated emotion from the screen and the reason would be its perspective.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm glad I never have to watch True Grit again. It just really was not my style at all. Mattie's father was killed, and in a way this is her coming-of-age story and one of her defining life moments even if it doesn't go the way as planned. Originally Mattie does seem like a parent to me because of her tremendous responsibility of actually finding her father's murderer and the way she orders the men Cogburn and LaBoeuf around to do what she wants.

One of the highlights of the movie for me was the scenery and costumes. Even if they were not completely right, the were very convincing as to the period and I felt almost like I was in that time period. It's also a great movie for watching the progression of relationships. Both the men treat her like a child at the start (like beating her which disgusted me) but eventually came to respect her.

As for my problems with the movie, the journey to find Tom Chaney was very unclear. We met people (and killed) those that I had no idea who they were and just saw a bunch of scenes of shooting and horses and I was totally lost and uninterested. This movie was also quite misogynistic in the way that Mattie was practically the only female in the movie even though it was about her. She also has to earn her respect, which no one else has to do and I hate this gender role. In general it was also too gruesome for me. I hated the shooting, the killing, and really the violence that I didn't understand. It was really unrealistic.

Cogburn and LaBoeuf go through their struggles with helping Mattie as well. They take turns, reverse roles, but at the end are there for her and she remembers them fondly in her old age so their mistreatment didn't really phase her in the end. I did come to realize that Mattie truly was the only one withe true grit though. She was strong in the face of adversity as a 14 year old and the only real hero throughout. I did like the way the movie ended with a grown-up version of Mattie though. Brought the relationships with Cogburn and LaBoeuf full circle and closure. Ultimately the movie was too serious for me and I just didn't enjoy it. Could have been worse.

Notable too is the performance of Jeff Bridges, who succeeds in setting down true grit.

A great movie, nice landscapes, nice historical research, but the story is surprisingly simple (nothing like Lebowski here) and predictable, and would not convince without good actor performances.

If you liked the movie, you should read the western novel 'True Grit' by Charles Portis.

Joel and Ethan Coen go down a different path from their unique storytelling and take on a Western, one which John Wayne occupied in the original outing. The Coens take a very toned down approach to what we are accustomed to see in their films, but they still have an eccentric tone to the film when the dialogue comes into place. Hailee Steinfield delivers a confident and mature performance as Mattie Ross, a young girl travelling away from home to see justice take place after a ruthless man murders her father, she is a well read and surely individual, wanting the help of the local bounty hunter, Rooster Cogburn, played with grit and hardened experience by Jeff Bridges, who begrudgingly agrees to help this 14 year old girl track down Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), the man who committed the murder.
Cogburn is a battle-hardned individual who doesn't care much for the consequences of his actions, he's getting old and doesn't care much for anything anymore, much to the dismay of LaBoeuf, a young ranger who enjoys bragging about his achievements in the wild. The three set out on a long and tiring journey in search of the criminal, facing various obstacles which most of the time is each other. The film has the polished touch of a Coen piece, it has strong accents, eccentric dialogue and exceptionally memorable characters throughout, creating a standalone film that shouldn't really be seen as anything other than a retelling.
Cogburn seemingly takes the place of the father the way the story unfolds, teaching Mattie about the ways of the wild and the decisions he has made, this film is very much about these two individuals, how their characters develop and how they react in each others company, but its also a very good Western through and through, combining the slow paced and character driven moments seen in many of the greats, but also a shoot em' up adventure that never fails to entertain.
It certainly has a different touch than the typical Coen picture, but it still brims with excitement, unpredictably and heart, but it also stays true to the classic Westerns of yesteryear to deliver a nostalgic plot with a modern kick to make this an entertaining film fromstart to finish.

The simple story involves 14-year old girl Mattie Ross enlisting the aid of an experienced bounty hunter in order to track down the man who murdered her father.

The movie moves along at a good pace and features everything you would expect from the genre, including some brutal shoot outs. Jeff Bridges, taking on the role originally played by John Wayne, and Matt Damon are as watchable as ever but it is really Hailee Steinfeld in her first major movie role who steals the show as Mattie Ross, showing a level of maturity beyond her years and helping to hold the whole movie together.

Fans of the genre won’t be disappointed.

The performances were all great especially Jeff Bridges. The story moves a lot faster than the old one and these actors seem to fit their roles a lot better than the actors in the original. My favorite part was the climax. It was so much more satisfying than the old True Grit's sappy last 5 minutes. In this ending, nothing is completely happy and forced. It's cool how it doesn't explain Matt Damon's fate. That makes the ending way cooler when you don't know what happens to every single character. Expand

The Coen Brothers really did a good job of adapting a remake with an identity all its own. Many critics and alot of viewers have raved about how this new version is much better than the original. However, I personally feel like it's not that much better than the original. This version adds alot to the story, but even with a fresh touch and interpretation, the story didn't feel all that intense nor interesting. With this being said, this fault may not even be because of the films; the story is adapted from a book. That's really my only sort of negative thing about the film. I was led on to believe this new version is tons better than the original, but I liked them both about the same.

A thing that stands out instantly about this film is the incredible cinematography. The setting and scenery is stunning. Props to the Coens for, again, finding great locations and sets that really add a deeper level to the film.

Also, I really enjoyed the acting. Jeff Bridges does a great job as Cogburn. Even though John Wayne is the original Rooster Cogburn, Bridges gives a great performance that genuinely portrays the character while still giving another aspect of the character. Hailee Steinfeld also gives a strong performance. She's in every scene and steals most of them. She brilliantly portrays Mattie Ross and shows her own "grit." Bridges and Steinfeld are both worthy of their Oscar nods! Josh Brolin, although only in a few scenes, also gives a strong supporting performance. My favorite performance of the film comes from Matt Damon. He delivers yet another strong performance. I really enjoyed it! Even though this review may seem harsh, I really really liked this film. 2010 was a strong year for movies and True Grit is among the best. I recommend this film to everyone!

This movie however not only was enjoyable, but was brilliant and excellent in almost anything in my opinion. The story is really linear and very predictable, but what actually makes the story good is "how" it's told, because the girl protagonist is very disturbing and I can't hide a small chill whenever I saw her determination and her intelligence: she looked more like an anti-heroine other than anything else, so much that not even Cogburn (the old gunman and second protagonist) couldn't stop her in any way: this was very interesting to watch and this proves how old stories can still be good with just few changes in story telling and character development, without mentioning that the movie is a story of morality and behaviour and it's both touching and disturbing. The action is good too though and the shooting scenes were actually very well done, and aside of the main characters even the secondary ones were not only good, but actually remarkable (even the three men, near the start, who said ONE line, gave me a brief moment of sadness). Maybe I'm skipping something, but I highly recommend to watch this movie, however don't expect mindless shooting or senseless action: it's a story to watch, enjoy, and learn. Expand

The original was far too much of a comedy for what was supposed to be a revenge film and Kim Darby's performance was far too cartoonish. I imagined that the Coens would probably go far in the other direction and create an extremely violent film that might better fit the theme of revenge.

I was surprised to see how little their vision differed from the original and how poor the acting was. Jeff Bridges played a caricature of all his recent performances and was unintelligible for long stretches. His chemistry with Maddy was non-existent, partially because she was again portrayed as a one-note "girl with spunk" rather than as a real character whose moods and reactions change with the action. If she's an interesting film character, it's because she's a young woman driven by physical revenge - not because she "spunky". I'm stunned by the critics' accolades for her performance, which was most notable for its unrealistic staccato line delivery, especially in her repartee with the horse dealer. I realize that, at 14, the Coens were responsible for her performance, but it was painful.

If there's ever been a less credible portrayal of a Texas Ranger than Matt Damon's, I thankfully haven't seen it, and wouldn't want to. I had the sense that he knew it wasn't working but couldn't back out in mid-film. His accent wavered by the minute. Though the role was as cartoonish as in the original, Glen Campbell captured the persona far better.

Though I almost missed Josh Brolin's performance because I occasionally have to blink, his 6 lines of dialogue were delivered with a bizarre, raspy growl for no apparent reason. (Matt Damon marvels at Brolin's inspired delivery in an accompanying commentary!)

Barry Pepper's performance is the best in the film, but even then it's bizarre to see him perfectly mimic Robert Duvall down to the voice. Again, as in so many points in the film, you just wonder "why bother"?

Though the original was far from a great film and far from Wayne's best, it was better than this remake. The original actors were better in their roles, and even Kim Darby's Maddy - cartoonish as I found her -shared an obvious affection for John Wayne that was glaringly missing from the remake.

After their 2007 No Country for Old Men, the Coen brothers try their hand at a true western with True Grit, an adaptation of the novel of the same name which John Wayne won his only Oscar for the 1969 version.

Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) is a headstrong 14 year old girl out to avenge her father's murder. Knowing her limitations she recruits the most unscrupulous U.S. Marshal she can find, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). They set off into Indian territory to hunt down her father's killer (Josh Brolin) occasionally accompanied by Texas Ranger Matt Damon, who is after the outlaw for a previous offence.

Helped by the Coen's excellent script, Steinfeld, Damon and Bridges in particular deliver excellent performances. Mattie is the moral compass of the uncomfortable trio as they proceed on their road trip and amusingly keeps her elder companions in line throughout for her own gain. The film also benefits from superb cinematography, including some memorable shots when Rooster and Mattie cross the horizon at sunset.

True Grit operates at its own pace towards it's finale and although few may consider it uneventful or boring it is a great story of unflinching retribution and justice.

I felt like Josh Brolin was in the movie for 3-4 minutes total to me.

Those critics who gave this movie bad reviews because it wasn't close enough to the original really frustrate me. Why would anyone want a new movie to copy an old one frame for frame? I thought the movie held true to the the values and driving characteristics of the original, while taking liberties of adding in variations of their views of the story. Overall, I thought it was an excellent western worth watching over and over.

True Grit is an extraordinary western film that gets the tone and atmosphere right. It immerses you into the world that it puts you in and weaves a decently interesting tale too. The entire cast does a great job with this movie, they had me truly believe that they were actually form that time period. The redemption story is done pretty well and it's a good central driving force that keeps the plot moving forward. Jeff Bridges does a good job as the US marshal Rooster Cogburn. Matt Damon also does a great job with his character a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf. The most surprising performance came from the new comer, Hailee Steinfeld who caries most of the film. Steinfeld does a great job as the lead character, it's pretty impressive. I guess my only complaint with the film is that there are a few pacing issues, there were times when i admittedly began to wander off wondering when something would happen. Just as soon as boredom would set in, though, an action scene or an argument between the characters would break out and would instantly snap me back into the film. As a western film this movie succeeds, it may not be the most action packed film but then again it really doesn't need to be. Expand

However, the performances keep this film high and amusing especially Hailee Steinfeld as the straight-to=the-point Mattie. True Grit might stand out as One of the Best Cowboy Remakes but it has its powers to stand on its own. The direction of the camera and the scenic landscapes all add depth to the film, accompanied by Carter Burwell's piano-driven score. The story is about a 14 year old girl named Mattie who wants to avenge her father's death but not without the help of a Marshal. She chooses Mr. One-Eye-Patched Rooster Cogburn played by Jeff Bridges, who manages to be convincing enough. Matt Damon and Josh Brolin also play as supporting (enemies) characters.
Ethan and Joel Coen have directed something of a miracle, normally (especially noticeable within this year, thats right...I'm looking at you Single White Female rip-off) remakes are a bad hand which is why it's a miracle because the grand cast works well and their chemistry is warm as a bottle of whiskey. 78%
It could've been more exciting but so far its a couple of steps above your normal cowboy movie. The Best Cowboy Movie So Far was and is Quigley Down Under. Still, this is an exception.

Bridges is phenomenal, even better than John Wayne, in his portrayal of Cogburn. Damon -- at his best since the Bourne movies -- is just spot-on damn good. He comes across as a real piece of work at first, but by movie's end, my attitude towards his character did a 180. The girl who plays Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) completely floored me with her acting abilities. I loved this flick. Matter of fact, it is not only my favorite western but could compete for top spot in any genre, save for horror. That honor goes to the Swedish made Let the Right One In. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is possibly the most anti-climatic movie I've ever seen. While it was artistically done, and both Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon put on good performances, it wasn't enough to take away from the slow story that felt like it had no ending. The 'showdown' was what could have saved this movie, but instead was nothing more Jeff Bridges running across a field on horseback, and was over within minutes. The 'climax' was really only Mattie Ross being bit by a snake. I'm not trying to sound like I wanted this movie to be 'Hollywoodized like so many movies are these days (I can respect the Coen Brothers for not selling out), but it wouldn't have killed to have put some excitement into this otherwise dreary story. The first decent movie I have seen in years.

Matt Damon does his best acting since 'the talented mr ripley' as comedic relief.

I liked all of the characters, even the villians. The film is beautifully shot, perfectly paced, and the final shootout is intense.

I've seen the original film and this one must be a 1,000 times better.

I almost can't believe there's anyone who didn't like this movie, and then I realize this is America, and it all makes sense.

The film is perfect until the fake looking cg rattlesnakes, other than that.....

In my opinion, True Grit looks like a B-movie Western, at best. It is hard for me to understand all the favorable critic reviews, other than to imagine that there was a degree of the "star-struck" factor. Because, stars there were; the track record of all the creative team is impressive. What happened, then, when they got to make this movie? It may have been the all too well-known lack of inspiration. Let´s hope that is was a temporary condition, and they revert to making good films, as they have shown they can do. At least in the past. Expand

"True Grit" was not quite what I expected, much less an action western or a machismo canon as a film about character development and writing. As with any Coen Brothers we get several scenes of hilarious and quirky dialogue, which I highly enjoy from them. Bridges was good but not his best (I thought his voice was a bit much), and Damon continues to impress in his varied roles. I came into the movie thinking Hailee Steinfeld would be cheesy and over-the-top, but I think she really held her own and gave strong believability to the feisty young main character. A well deserved Oscar nod in her case, much like Jennifer Lawrence in "Winter's Bone". The soundtrack was FANTASTIC, as was some of the subtle ironic cinematography. My main complaints are in the the ending, Bridge's voice, and the seemingly pointless behavior of some of the characters (often a complaint I have with some Coen Brothers characters). Nevertheless, a good addition to their filmography, and a welcoming addition to Western Cinema. Expand

Right after seeing this movie I'd tweeted that Hailee Steinfeld should be nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. I guess whoever does the nominations read my tweet. This is a must see movie.

I think we're in the presence of a quite interesting Western. And altough it's a sort of remake I do feel it brings a new picture of the story itself.
Loved the witty remarks troughout the movie and the actors perfomances.

The best thing about this movie was the acting. Jeff Bridges was fantastic! The film was set in a believable location with long drawn-out silences which added plenty of suspense.

I'm talking after watching ''No Country for Old Men'' from Coen brothers too. What a surprise back then! Of course I started to love Josh Brolin there too, Javier Barden a genius!! But.. going straight to the point... thanks Coen guys I'm starting to give Westerns a chance. I knew about this movie and couldn't wait to watch it! Of course it has nothing to do the fact that is starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin... I'm kidding, they're gorgeous! Jeff Bridges has beaten then all... if there is a Leading actor award, you've got it right here! What a acting, mixing that comedy-drama role, who in the Holy Mother of God can do that as good as him... or at least who can do it? Thanks Jeff for a great movie... then you have Matt Damon, in the 2nd line, you know, hard to say what I'm really thinking... but, well.. after all is Matt D. (what would u expect?)... he was too funny really really funny too, great job there. I was really expecting to see more about Josh Brolin, but, well, he had not such a big part in the movie I guess, but he was perfect too. The girl, a really tough one, you don't wanna mess with her... that's all I'm allowed to say if I don't want to give u a spoiler... my last will... WATCH IT and GET IMPRESSED! Expand

What sets it apart however is the quest for vengeance by a young tough as nails heroine who just happens to be 12!!!She holds the movie togethor and although she doesnt let us into her cold as stone interior, we understand her and feel fer her. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon are equals unto each other and the banter between all is masterfully handeled by the Coen Brothers. The movie is dark, gritty and moves along at a steady gallop and builds to a satisfying finale. The master stroke for me however was how the ending reminded me that as with all of our lives...our biggest adventures are simply a page or a chapter and nothing more!!! Expand
