Rap artist Alpa Chino(Brandon T. Jackson) takes great offense to the Aussie's manner of modulation, because he knows that his people don't speak jive like a dry-cleaning merchant from the seventies. But just in case you missed the irony, his people might also take offense to a soft drink he peddles around called Booty Sweat. Alpa Chino, arguably, is guilty of minstrelism, too. Skin color loses some of its relevance, since both men perpetuate the same media-created stereotype that all African-American males talk as if they're imitating some musical idiom(jazz or rap, depending on the generation). Cartoonist Gary Larson of "Far Side(The)"-fame, drew a incisive panel about pigeonholing people, or in his case, birds, being birds that don't comply with our notions of bird-like behavior(the caption read: "Non-singing canaries take shop"). There's no intent on Lazarus' part to offend the black community; it's just another role to him, another opportunity to expand his acting range, a challenge. A method actor like Lazarus has an ego that drives his inner muse to be the "person" to the best of his ability; to lampoon his character's racial identity would be antithetical to the spirit of "The Method". In Lazarus' self-involved mind; black people talk like this. And even worse, that he IS black. Alpa Chino knows how black people talk, but that doesn't prevent him from pitching a carbonated soft drink demographically-targeted towards his own kind which would give somebody like Lazarus the wrongheaded impression that all black people are pimps and hos. The filmmaker gets away with blackface because he has the shrewdness to understand that the gangsta rap sub-genre in hip-hop culture, is an even more insidious brand of minstreling than the vaudeville acts from time immemorial. "Tropic Thunder" knows the language of "South Park" by heart. It satirizes and takes no prisoners. Nobody is spared. Nobody. When Cartman crashes the Special Olympics by impersonating a "retarded" person, he becomes the butt of his own joke, when the mentally-impaired athletes repeatedly kick his ass. That's the problem with Simple Jack, the handicapped character played by Tugg Speedman(Ben Stiller); there's no turnabout-is-fair-play moment to excuse the harsh depiction of the "full-on retarded" in this cruel, but undeniably funny movie. If you're reaching for a silver lining, though, you can make the argument that a male model(Derek Zoolander, from this filmmaker's own "Zoolander") is more "retarded" than Jack, so his own "retarded"-ness achieves a state of relativity. A great cast wasted by a director who isn't taking enough risks in criticizing his subject matter, with a script that isn't as sharp as we all wanted it to be considering the line up. Jack Black's presence is especially misjudged here, his not-at-all likeable character stagnating further through flat laughs and limp characterisation. The various elements of Hollywood that are parodied are too numerous to list out, but each is given its due and is really mocked thoroughly. Though it can be over-the-top at times, it is a fantastic time throughout that really exceeded my expectations completely. I expected it to be pretty dumb all around, but instead, I got a crazy good time that kept me laughing from beginning to end. The writing is good, the mise en scene as a whole is very good, and I loved the make-up and characterization in particular. Overall, Tropic Thunder lived up to the hype and more. Expand

The acting is top notch from an exceptional and experienced cast and this is a perfect blend of action and comedy. C'mon guys! This movie had his potential and even a big budget. Some of the jokes are also good. Tom Cruise is great, Robert Downey Jr. also was interesting.
But somehow the movie doesnt work and some of the jokes are not even funny.

In order to get the most out ofFilms that satirize cinema always find their audience. In this case, we have a group of decadent actors, full of problems (insecurities, depressions, drug use, etc.), amid a chaotic and unprofessional film set. In order to get the most out of the cast and more control over the set, the director and producer decide to leave the main actors in the jungle, in their characters, for a mission on the ground. What they did not expect was that they really had to fight, since a group of drug traffickers, by coincidence, controlled the area where they were left. The film was a success, and ended up being nominated for the industry's big prizes including an Oscar nomination in 2009, one of the years when the statuettes were most unfairly awarded.

As can be seen, the script shoots in several directions when it satirizes the film industry: some criticisms are highly pertinent, such as that made to the financiers' power over creative freedom and the conduction of projects, the abuse of merchandising and advertising in films or the way in which actors sink into addiction, depression or other problems. There are several cinematographic genres criticized here, such as war blockbusters, cheap comedies and films with adult or provocative content (like the parody about monks, at the beginning). Such a film could not be politically correct, and here there is plenty material to offend everyone, starting with the dialogues, filled with heavy slang and offensive sentences, to racism (a white actor who paints himself to make a black character) and discrimination (a fat actor who is famous only for making a flatulence film or the use of jokes about mentally disabled people, involving a false film made by one of the characters). It is a film that will certainly offend a lot of people, but I deal with it very well: the politically correct has become such a dictatorship that it is good to question it. Unfortunately, from the middle, the film becomes more and more predictable and simple, until reaching a conventional end, that is effective and solves the story well.

Directed and written by Ben Stiller, who reserves one of the most central roles for himself, the film brings together a series of renowned comedy actors, all at their best, starting with Stiller himself, who does a truly successful job. The film also features Jack Black, who is perfect in his role, tailor-made for him, and also Robert Downey Jr., an actor I don't usually associate with comedy, but who has shown, continuously, to be much more than Iron Man. I especially liked the way Downey Jr. And Stiller played together, with dialogues that are both witty and provocative. Nick Nolte also appears and does a very good job on a secondary character. On the negative side, I would highlight the irritating work of Tom Cruise, who was given a character apparently as narcissistic as the actor himself, and the somewhat neutral and forgettable performances of Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson.

At a technical level, the film shows well how much it cost to produce: the sets are really very good and detailed, the filming locations were meticulously chosen and the costumes were carefully made. The make-up team also deserves applause for the amount of resources used and the way in which they knew how to use them: just look at the way Tom Cruise is unrecognizable, to give a simple example. Cinematography does not bring anything particularly good, but the editing was well done and the visual, special and sound effects are excellent.

This scene enough, even when you couple it with its context, is still one so absurdly funny and surreal that Salvador's Dali paintings would look like conservative art which even your religious grandmother would adore while she cooks you your tenth portion of meatballs.

But, lets get back to the subject, shall we, and let me tell you that Ben Stiller's 'Tropic Thunder' is one of the funniest and intelligent satires I've ever seen. What sets it so high on the funny train is the fact that the satire and self-deprecation of the Hollywood superficial and blind life-style goes so deep that it almost feels as if it does not want to be taken seriously.

Indeed, it is a huge middle finger to all the producers, agents, executives, screenwriters, directors and mostly actors for their blind idiocy and their childish way of thinking, but also to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences themselves, although not that brave for obvious reasons. A good example of the ridiculous philosophies of Hollywood actors is when, Ben Stiller's character, Tugg Speedman, feels guilty after killing a panda bear by mistake simply because he once made a photo-shoot with one.

Yet, while the screwball humor gives an impression of being brainless, like Brandon T. Jackson's Alpa Chino (yes, even the names are puns) and his commercial appeal for the bottom of the ladies or Jeff Portnoy's scatophilic humor, there is deep thought about the controversial method acting and the mental health of dedicated actors, seen best through Robert Downey, Jr.'s brilliant performance of the five-time Oscar Winning Australian actor Kirk Lazarus. Why Australian? Well, why not? Australia hasn't really been used enough anyway. In the movie, he portrays a highly racist stereotype of a black man. As he says, when he is asked who he is, Lazarus replies simply: "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude".

So, the beauty of 'Tropic Thunder' is that it wants to be, first of all, a comedy which aims to make you laugh, and boy does it succeed! Sure, it is more deep and complex that it appears but it does not enforce its pretentious ideas on you.
