Tropic Thunder has no business being as good as it is. Great cast, it is funny, and has solid action scenes. The only thing preventing it from being great is that the final act is a drop in quality compared to everything else.

The war action genre now seen in the form of a parody, with everything and the excesses of its actors. The final result would be better if it weren't for the annoying tics of Stiller and Black, and the lack of spontaneity of the jokes. Honestly, one of the most genius comedies ever. It's so silly and outrageous that it should have never worked, but somehow, it does.

Actors who desperatly will take any role they think might gain them an Oscar, no matter how unfit they are for the role, no matter how inappropiate it is, no matter if it isn't even they're own ethnicity, if it seems prestigous enough to earn the statuette, they'll take it.

Literally one of the funniest movie ever!right from the start it was damn hilarious the trailers and ad's at start i thought it was real thing it was surprisingly hilarious and awesome,the characters were iconic as hell the cast and there acting was great and hilarious seriously i was in little shock watching tom Cruise in never seen before avatar he was awesome as hell the attitude and the dance it was hilarious portrayal,R.D.J was amazing the accent and the dialogues were enough to make his role legendary,every time he speaks in certain situations it was a damn hilarious.Ben stiller was hotshot he was awesome the madness of being on track again,with little respect of people in village he was amazing,literally the conversation between him and R.D.J was hilarious AF the retard speech and ending's i'm just me speech it was hilarious and the crying scene and whole recreation thing just like starting at end it was great,the death of director was outta nowhere it was surprising but awesome,the other characters were great the Alpha-chino and R.D.J's scene,Jack black's character's drug thing and the other guy kind-of nerd thing with the novelist and bomber-man there side was fun,Mathew's character was supportive and little serious character but at end he was awesome,the whole story-line was unique as hell it was fun,the music was phenomenal.every scene was filled with amazing humor,the Vietnam people were amazing the gang leader and his fight with jack black was awesome the whole rescue mission with R.D.J speaking mandarin it was hilarious parodied AF,the last fight was great the recreation of starting and the kid stabbing Ben and whole Cheesy dialogues closing with the Oscar it was damn amazing ride,the whole credits with the dance of Tom cruse it was hell of great thing,seriously whole movie's tone and direction was great the visuals were amazing as per comedy literally its a masterpiece!it was entertaining fun and awesome movie!… Expand

This scene enough, even when you couple it with its context, is still one so absurdly funny and surreal that Salvador's Dali paintings would look like conservative art which even your religious grandmother would adore while she cooks you your tenth portion of meatballs.

But, lets get back to the subject, shall we, and let me tell you that Ben Stiller's 'Tropic Thunder' is one of the funniest and intelligent satires I've ever seen. What sets it so high on the funny train is the fact that the satire and self-deprecation of the Hollywood superficial and blind life-style goes so deep that it almost feels as if it does not want to be taken seriously.

Indeed, it is a huge middle finger to all the producers, agents, executives, screenwriters, directors and mostly actors for their blind idiocy and their childish way of thinking, but also to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences themselves, although not that brave for obvious reasons. A good example of the ridiculous philosophies of Hollywood actors is when, Ben Stiller's character, Tugg Speedman, feels guilty after killing a panda bear by mistake simply because he once made a photo-shoot with one.

Yet, while the screwball humor gives an impression of being brainless, like Brandon T. Jackson's Alpa Chino (yes, even the names are puns) and his commercial appeal for the bottom of the ladies or Jeff Portnoy's scatophilic humor, there is deep thought about the controversial method acting and the mental health of dedicated actors, seen best through Robert Downey, Jr.'s brilliant performance of the five-time Oscar Winning Australian actor Kirk Lazarus. Why Australian? Well, why not? Australia hasn't really been used enough anyway. In the movie, he portrays a highly racist stereotype of a black man. As he says, when he is asked who he is, Lazarus replies simply: "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude".

So, the beauty of 'Tropic Thunder' is that it wants to be, first of all, a comedy which aims to make you laugh, and boy does it succeed! Sure, it is more deep and complex that it appears but it does not enforce its pretentious ideas on you.… Expand

I'm not a very big fan of most comedy movies, mostly because they tend to be repetitive and annoying. This movie is one of the very few exceptions. Though it can be over-the-top at times, it is a fantastic time throughout that really exceeded my expectations completely. I expected it to be pretty dumb all around, but instead, I got a crazy good time that kept me laughing from beginning to end. The writing is good, the mise en scene as a whole is very good, and I loved the make-up and characterization in particular. Overall, Tropic Thunder lived up to the hype and more.… Expand

When it rarely made me laugh, it made me laugh hard. Everything in this movie, the acting, writing, Special FX, and comedy are all varying wildly in quality. I had to take a point off for the complete lack of women in this movie, and the fact that the casting was so blatantly sexist I have to take a point off for. This movie has only one actress in it, Yvette Nicole Brown, a great comedic actor in her own right if only she was allowed to shine. So many female comedians could have added to this project, and it's a shame that wasn't allowed to happen. No movie can be allowed to get away with that, not even one as good as this.… Expand

One of the better comedies I have seen that came out in the last 10 years.

Acting is generally OK. However Cruise and RDJ are phenomenal. Stiller is as Bland as usual. Story, effects and writing are pretty good. Not brilliant, but for aOne of the better comedies I have seen that came out in the last 10 years.

what is so special about this movie is , that the emotions displayed when the real actors are caught in a no where land which is not a film at all. the gripping scene of the movie is the landmine explosion of the director of the movie.what is so special about this movie is , that the emotions displayed when the real actors are caught in a no where land which is not a film at all. the gripping scene of the movie is the landmine explosion of the director of the movie. goosebumps are sure for audiences after that scene. neatly narrated, perfectly screenplayed especially in second half. the initial 15 minutes was a bit boring and opening trailers was not a convincing way to begin, but sooner or later, movie takes a turn and enters deep in to the real jungles struggling for life. friendship , foes , obsession and all real activities are seen in the characters. tom cruise was awesome in his specific role. but always he shouts. thats what i did not like. rest all characters give life to the movie. good recommended movie.… Expand

Best Film of the year. How did this not win best picture. Comedies deserve more credit. This movie was incredibly intelligent. It is sad that some are not intelligent enough to realize this.

The movie was hilarious until about half way through the film. Then the jokes sort of died down, which was a disappointment. Partly stupid, but was a very funny movie. The movie had many stars in it. You would make you laugh so hard until the end. I really liked it. The best part of Tropic Thunder is Robert Downey Jr. The rest of the characters n the movie are annoying and while watching, you wish they could just shut up. Jack Black's character is perhaps the worst. Not the greatest movie ever, but very solid. It had plenty of laughs throughout, though some parts were a bit bland. Overall, I recommend seeing this in theaters, and at least renting it, though it may be a buy.

Perhaps if I were the parent of a Down's syndrome child I could more easily embrace the objections of those who are, in some cases, understandably offended by To go "full-on retard" or not to go "full-on retard", that is the question. Perhaps if I were the parent of a Down's syndrome child I could more easily embrace the objections of those who are, in some cases, understandably offended by the dialogues that occur late in Ben Stiller's take-no-prisoners film industry satire between actors debating whether to use restaint in portraying mentally challenged characters, as Tom Hanks did in Forrest Gump, or to go way over the top like Sean Penn in I Am Sam, and the box office and Academy Award rewards and penalties that potentially go with either approach. Although I can sympathize (if not empathize) with said critics, I think some of them may be too emotionally close to the subject to understand that Tropic Thunder's principals are figures of ridicule and NOT ROLE MODELS--after all, nobody objected when the Nazis in Schindler's List spewed anti-Semitism, did they? Besides, Kirk Lazarus's (Robert Downey Jr., enjoying a movie year that some actors would sell less-loved siblings to have) and Tugg Speedman's (Stiller) observations are dead-on--if anything they don't go far enough. This movie doesn't mention the worst example of all: Cliff Robertson's horrible overacting in 1968's Charly, which netted him an Oscar for a role that he ruthlessly engineered for himself while demolishing Daniel Keyes' fine novel in the process. Tropic Thunder also neglects to discuss how many Little Golden Guys inevitably go to performers who (pardon the expression in advance) go "full-on gimp", portraying PHYSICALLY challenged folks (Jane Wyman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Hanks in Philadelphia, etc., etc. It could be said--though not by me--that the only actor to honestly come upon an Oscar this way was Marlee Matlin.) Clearly, the actors and crew of a Vietnam movie-within-a-movie who fall down a real-life rabbit hole that Lewis Carroll never dreamed of think that Konstantin ("Love art in yourself, not yourself in art") Stanislavski was a long-deposed Balkan government official; Stiller and cowriter Justin Theroux are ruthless in depicting them, and the result is a movie whose box office success, like that of 2006's Borat, happily disproves the old saw that satire is what closes on Saturday night. Unfortunately, as with Borat, much of Tropic Thunder is funnier on paper than actually on screen (and it never manages to top the magnificent parodies seen in the first five minutes, which among other things should prove beyond all remaining doubt that hacks-from-hell Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedburg should be shot into outer space). But even though Tropic Thunder is stuffed with insider jokes that will confuse if not outright bore casual moviegoers, it's difficult not to admire its utter mercilessness and lack of sentimentality in depicting EVERYONE in the profession as greedier and more heartless and self-centered than those in Wall Street and Washington combined. (Sadly, this hasn't changed much over the years; if you want proof, read Joseph McBride's disturbing John Ford and Frank Capra biographies. Nor will it: while AMC's brilliant TV series Mad Men delights in exposing the difference between early 1960s Madison Avenue culture and today's--puff, puff--TRopic Thunder could easily be remade 48 years later with very few changes.) But you gotta admire the resourcefulness, caginess and intelligence of A Certain Superstar whose recent couch-jumping antics, overespousal of religious beliefs and willingness to star in Robert Redford's boring Iraq preachathon have subjected him to hard times: his astonishing comeback cameo as a studio slimeball who maybe has taken a sequence in Risky Business a bit too much to heart has, at least for now, restored for Mr. Cruise the mantle of One Of The Smartest Guys In Hollywood.… Expand

Also the special effects were over the top, which is exactly what needed to be done. Its not just the "one-liner" jokes that make this movie funny, It is the whole attitude that this film keeps the whole way through. I will also say that most all the actors did an excellent job acting as actors, its something that is really hard to do. If you like good clean comedy and don't like to be offended, don't see it. It is offensive, but on a level that tries to explain and not make fun of. The retard part everyone is talking about is clearly making fun of the fact that actors have to play things they don't really understand and usually fail bad at. Overall if you like in you face comedy with a good plot see this. If you think you might get offended or think its going to be "Gentleman's humor"(for a lack of a better phrase) skip it.… Expand

A lot of no names, with a few guest stars. At a couple points, I thought maybe this is where it gets silly or over the top. Even in those spots, they were able to walk a fine line, but never crossed it. Overall, just a very funny comedy that entertained me from the beginning to the end.… Expand
