"Selva Tragica" is a step forward after the soporific "Epitaph"; However Yulene Olaizola once again shows more interest in the story than in her characters.

The premise is extremely intriguing: in the 1920s, a group of Mexican gum workers meets a mysterious Belizean woman, who arouses tension and lust among them. The movie seems to start as Agnes' adventure into the unknown; strangely, her character is diluted as the plot progresses, until she is reduced to the mystical symbol that she represents.

The atmosphere that Olaizola and her team create - filming on location - stands out, since something like this is rarely seen in Mexican cinema; but the story, in general, doesn't quite work out.

You can appreciate Olaizola's desire to do something different - a western in the jungle! - and although, again, his story is based on guys walking from one place to another while losing their minds, allusions to the brutality of capitalism and machismo paint a historical panorama that cannot be set aside.
