One of those animated movies that I grew up with, and to this day it's still fantastic. It's filled with action and humor, the pacing is great, and the characters are very likeable. This movie will be remembered as one of Disney's greatests for sure.

This movie is such a classic for a reason!

The jokes are very good and still make me laugh, the story is surprisingly good for a kids movie made in 1995 and the animation holds up surprisingly better than I thought it would especially since it's one of the first fully 3D animated movies to ever exist. Now I could just be very biased since I grew up with having a DVD of it but please watch this in your lifetime, you won't regret it.

A true landmark in animation history and a major masterpiece, especially for 1995 standards. It's sad to say that they don't really ever make movies like this anymore. True 10/10. Fantastic start to Pixar's film production. And truly one of the best.

The credits roll at 77 minutes, not a moment is wasted; this is easily one of the tightest and wittiest scripts in any animated film, period. Woody and Buzz’s dynamic was never as entertaining again as it was here, and as great as the sequels are it’s the one thing they all unfortunately lack. And while the animation is clearly dated in many respects, the textures and lighting make the world feel completely tangible. Seeing this in 4K really helped me appreciate the little details. Pixar’s first is still one of their finest. Masterpiece. Expand

Also the first Pixar movie and still one of their best! The animation may look dated compared to CGI films nowadays, but that doesn’t matter. The story is very well written and the concept of toys who come to life when their owner is not around was done perfectly. There were many great characters, of course the best ones being Woody and Buzz Lightyear. They were casted well too especially Tom Hanks as Woody. The relationship between Woody and Buzz shows great character development, with them being rivals at first but then later they become friends. The film is great for people of all ages, with many parts that everyone including the adults can have a good laugh at. This film is so good that John Lasseter won a special achievement award at the Oscars. It is an instant classic and should be considered one of the biggest movies of all time. Expand

I will also say that it is definitely the best Pixar movie to date, all of which are extremely good, even the weaker efforts Cars and the Incredibles are well worth watching. I loved the voice talents, the talented Tom Hanks is perfect as Woody, and Tim Allen likewise as Buzz. Both characters are hugely engaging thanks to their frequent conflicts, and are well supported by excellent supporting characters like Potato Head, Rex, Ham and Little Bo Beep, voiced by the likes of Don Rickles, Jim Varney, John Ratzenberger and Annie Potts. Not to mention the hilarious toy aliens, and the creepy kid Sid. The voice talents aren't the only things worth mentioning, the film has a remarkable story and a truly irreverent script ("I'm from Mattel, actually I'm from a smaller company that was purchased by Mattel in a leveraged buyout"). But the best aspect of the movie is the phenomenal animation, which was colourful and sophisticated with brilliant character movement. Honestly, I loved this movie, and I also thought the sequel is one of the few sequels of recent times, that actually manages to surpass its predecessor. All in all, a wonderful film, that is a must-see for the whole family. 10/10 Bethany Cox. Expand

Witty Sweet Fun For All Ages. Forever Changed Animated Film
This is as close to perfection as any animated film has come, entertained parents on a equal plane with their children, and set the bar to the top of the animation film industry. No film has yet come close to Toy Story in legitimizing animation as a film art on the level of movies with live actors. Great comedies are hard to come by - Toy Story strikes gold on that basis alone, but it is so much more. One of the Top 100 Greatest Films of All Time, and currently resides on my "Top 5 Greatest Comedy Films (1960-Present)" list, and “Top 20 Best Buddy Films”

As a kid I didn't really like 3D animations. Everyone in my class used to get schoolbags, lunchboxes, water bottles etc of Pixar cartoons. The three most popular ones were of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Mr Incredible. In my review of TheAs a kid I didn't really like 3D animations. Everyone in my class used to get schoolbags, lunchboxes, water bottles etc of Pixar cartoons. The three most popular ones were of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Mr Incredible. In my review of The Incredibles I mentioned how I hated The Incredibles until I watched it myself, since I came from a conservative family which didn't allow me to watch foreign films. I finally watched Toy Story when I was 15 years old, and this was so awesome! Later I got to know that it was the first ever 3D animated movie, and since then my respect for it has increased exponentially.
Toy Story is a story about Woody, a toy cowboy who was his master, Andy's favourite toy. Andy was absolutely obsessed with Woody, until Buzz Lightyear came over and completely took over his love. Not just Andy but even the other toys started getting more interested in Buzz. As a result Woody became jealous and decided to settle the score. Things don't go the right way when Woody also ends up getting thrown out along with Buzz, and then they both have to team up to get back to Andy.
The thing that really strikes me about Toy Story is that it had a huge risk to carry. Since it was going to be the first ever 3D animated feature film, it was supposed to give an example for the other films to follow. There are many examples of how the first film of a genre makes the genre successful and when it doesn't happen (Superman, Super Mario Bros, Alam Ara etc). In this case Andrew Stanton and Joss Whedon did a great job in making a mark by writing the story that is one of the most iconic of all time.
The animation is also pretty good. The first game isn't even close to what gaming is now, the first science fiction movie is nothing in front of science fiction movies now. But the first 3D animated movie is easily something that can give a competition to what they make nowadays. The ADR, the cinematography, the story, the comic timings and even the message that the movie gave - everything about this movie is so good. This is the reason why today Toy Story is one of the most iconic franchises of all time. My favourite character in the movie was RC. He was the only one who didn't misjudge anyone. He helped Woody and Buzz come back home together. Even watching his remote control was fun; it had a steering wheel! As a kid I was never allowed to play with remote controlled cars, so just seeing such an advanced car being driven was enough to get my attention.
I'm lucky to have been alive at a time when Toy Story was a phenomenon. It was an absolute perfection of a movie. It's kind of surprising that Joss Whedon, the same guy who made this masterpiece, later went on to make the 2017 Justice League. I hope this movie stays alive in the future and we get to see what all things can be added in the future movies because, let's get real, this franchise isn't gonna die anytime soon.

Taking that away, you're left with an above-average movie with really good voice acting, story, heart, and everything in-between. Toy Story is a delight from beginning to end and the characters are very well-realized. Woody could have been an unlikeable jerk in this movie but thank goodness he wasn't because it saved PIXAR. If Woody was in anyway unrelatable or unredeemable, PIXAR would not be the successful studio we have today. The music is also very good in this movie; Randy Newman did a fabulous job with the score and songs. Personally, Randy Newman is my favorite PIXAR composer. Overall, Toy Story is a great movie that also happened to be a ground-breaking movie for the animation industry. Expand

Plastic Fantastic.
Y'know, I always suspected that my toys were coming to life when I wasn't looking!

In Andy's Room, his toys lead lives of noisy desperation come every birthday and Christmas - no one wants to be one-upped by a new addition to the toy box. Nominally led by Cowboy Woody (there's a Brokeback joke in there just waiting to happen), Mr. Potato Head, Rex the Dinosaur, Ham the piggybank, Bo Peep, Slinky the dog and a smattering of other playthings go about their toy business of playing checkers, hanging with the hometoys and "plastic corrosion awareness meetings," until Andy's birthday party, when they gather expectantly around a transistor radio, listening to the reports of their toy soldier troops "in the field" (downstairs watching Andy's gift-opening), hoping that no gift will be exciting enough to cause Andy to neglect *them.* There is. His name is Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger.

Directed by Pixar mainstay John Lasseter, with the voice talents of Tom Hanks (as Woody), Don Rickles, John Ratzenberger (forever Cliff from *Cheers*), R. Lee Ermey, Annie Potts, Jim Varney and Tim Allen (as Buzz), *Toy Story* is that *rara avis* that succeeds on all levels – in its animation, storyline, character development, its messages of friendship and self-realization and, most importantly, its entertainment value. The fact that this is a cartoon (or animated feature – just what DO we call this new wave of computer-generated movies?) is incidental. Which makes the slightly dodgy animation (of the "real people") irrelevant - it gets the point across with or without the technological finesse.

The "Disney Movie" has become synonymous with maudlin messages, redneck fundamentalism, anachronistic family values, boneheaded parents, smart-mouthing youngsters, too-hip-to-be-smart teens and insufferable pets. Though Disney's tyrannical umbrella overarches this film's production studio, Pixar Animation, *Toy Story* somehow avoided all trace of Disney's craven hand, which is doubly surprising, considering this is Pixar's first feature length film, after years of experimentation. Right outa the gate and right outa the field.

Sure, there are "messages," but they are heartfelt, rather than maudlin (Woody tells Buzz during Buzz's greatest depression that it matters not what Buzz thinks of himself, what makes him important is what his owner, Andy, thinks of him); there are emotional segments, which are truly heartbreaking, rather than cheesy (when Buzz's escape attempt lands him with a broken arm, proving he is Not A Flying Toy, the lyric, "Clearly I will go sailing no more," launches a thousand hankies); and the portrayal of Andy's family was Pixar's triumphal achievement. Boldly contravening Disney's *idée fixe* of the 1950's nuclear family and Norman Rockwell fantasies, one of the many incarnations of a modern-day family is presented: a single mother with two kids, who are neither geniuses nor monsters, just normal children; happy to visit Pizza Planet and disappointed when favorite toys are lost.

Buzz – who believes he is a real life space ranger on a mission to save the universe - become Andy's favorite toy over Woody. The funny thing is: though Buzz believes he is real, he still adheres to toy protocol of "playing inert" when humans are in the area. (Maybe it's instinct?) When he mentions saving a toy from Sid, the vicious boy next door, how does he propose to do it if he is to adhere to the inert protocol? Buzz's ingenuousness regarding his role as a toy infuriates Woody to the point of attempted toy-assassination. Through a concatenation of accidents, both he and Buzz become lost and must use teamwork, trust and ingenuity to beat their path back to Andy, which finds them ensconced in scorchingly funny vignettes (Buzz fastening himself in an over-sized seatbelt; both falling in with green, three-eyed aliens; Buzz hyperventilating as "Mrs. Nesbitt"). During a climactic rocket ride, the callback line, "This is not flying - this is falling with style," simply seals this movie's greatness.

At least I now have a plausible explanation as to why my toys always got lost: after going about their toy business, they would just go inert anywhere they happened to be, instead of paying attention to their master's infallible toy filing system

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautifully captures the endearing blissfulness of childhood. As a child, the smallest and most meaningless problems in the world are sometimes magnified - In the case of Andy, the loss of his favourite toy results in heartbreak, whereas for his mother (an adult), this simple mishappening proves to be insignificant ("Honey, I'm sure he's around. You'll find him"), but through the eyes of a child: it can mean the end of the world.

Furthermore, I was also fortunate enough to have parents that cloaked me in bliss regarding the problems around me. This is best demonstrated when Andy's mother announces that they are moving, Andy is ecstatic - however, as an audience we can see that moving house can be an exciting experience, but it also comes with a headache of stress and logistics. However, these banal matters are never brought to Andy's attention; Andy's Mom takes this responsibility upon her shoulders without her son noticing a single thing. This kind of bliss between a child and parent figure is depicted seamlessly in the film.

Moreover, The writing of Buzz and Woody are phenomenal. Both characters start in similar places - Woody believes himself to be special, but for the wrong reasons. He has a self-centered view of himself, believing himself to be special because he is Andy's favourite toy. Likewise, Buzz (naively) believes himself to be special because he thinks he is a genuine space ranger. Both characters then embark on a journey of self-discovery. Along this adventure, both characters must accept their true purpose and what makes them special - they are not special for the reasons above, they are special because they are Andy's Toys.

You often hear the phrase "It made me feel like a kid again". However, in this case it is most apt. In fact, I didn't just "feel" like a kid for the 81-minute runtime. I was a kid, bewildered and in awe of the moments exuberantly brought to life on-screen.

"To Infinity, and Beyond!"

Expand

I prefer the old classic type of animation. I liked the story though. Overall, l find this movie "good" just as its sequels, but also l find it a bit overrated, l still believe that The Lion King is the best Disney movie ever. Expand

They will fight for the affection of a child from the moment that Buzz is offered to him as a gift, threatening Woody's place as his favorite toy. A rivalry that will lead to a strong friendship between them. Directed by John Lasseter, one of the brightest minds of Pixar Studios, the film features the voices of Tom Hanks (as Woody) and Tim Allen (as Buzz) for the main characters.

This was the film that launched Pixar to success, in a journey that still goes and deserves the respect of all admirers of the seventh art. The story of this film is deeply moving, not only to focus on strong themes like loyalty and friendship but, mainly, because it mess with our fondest memories by involving toys that we all played when we were kids. Its not a coincidence that we see, in this film, toys of our parents and grandparents living with action figures and games of our time. This film tries to touch everyone, from the small audience to the adults who take them to the movies. It's a great movie for the family and it's still current today, twenty years after his premiere.
