One of the best movies of the year.
As someone who wasn't a big fan of the original and didn't expect much considering that its success was largely due to hitting at the right time I half expected this movie to be OK, but nothing more.

I was so surprised leaving the cinema to find myself excited enough to scream. Movies like this don't come every month, most of the time they don't even come every year or even decade.
I won't spoil the movie in any way since it's worth it to see it first hand but if your only thought is if it's worth the ticket there's nothing more to say that buy one and get ready for a great experience.… Expand

What did I just see? A movie respecting established characters. In the woke version, Maverick is a broken hobo called back to teach a team of lesbians who are already perfect in every way and teach him not to be a pathetic loser.

It is a true American film and gets the full 10 for not labelling any particular country as the enemy as well as for minimal drama with no unnecessary bickering manufactured division between the crew. I remember seeing the first Topgun movie some 30 years ago. My wife and I caught it at the discount theater since it was already several weeks into it's run back then. This one, Maverick, will definitely be in my DVD collection and after watching it this weekend in the theater, I may go watch it again in the theater. After the first 15 minutes, this movie is a rollercoaster ride with edge-of-your-seat thrills. In the 36 hours since I saw the movie, I continue to re-run it in my head. This one is so much better than the original, even with Tom Cruise in his late 50s when he made the movie - he's 60 now. I'm a few years older than him and I did not want to see an old Tom Cruise in a Topgun movie, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Go see it. You will love it.… Expand

But as a sequel navigating the modern outrage mobs and other cantankerous spoilers and wreckers waiting in the wings to bring anything good down this thing is a solid ten. Tom Cruise doesn't look almost 60, he is in unreal shape for any age, but the work and dieting he must put in to look like this at 59 is nothing short of amazing. There is less cheese than was in the first movie, the music is great, and to see these people grunting and huffing while pulling real g-force maneuvers in real airplanes is so great. Tom Cruise had to take a huge amount of abuse to make this a reality - you can see the actors in planes sweating and suffering tunnel vision and black outs and redouts. One must have a healthy respect for Tom Cruise for being one of the very very few in hollyweird that actually cares enough about his craft to put in the work. I hope this kicks off a new wave of serious remakes that can even outshine the original if done right and I hope this kicks off a new wave of movies that skip the idiotic computer generated trash and get back to practical effects like this movie. This is basically an 80's movie done right - take all the good music and good looking people, reduce the cheese and come up with an engaging multi-faceted multi-layered plot that develops emotion and take it to eleven on a scale of ten.… Expand

Hab mich vorher nicht spoilern lassen und alles ausgeblendet um erstmal unbeeinflusst den Film zu schauen und bin jetzt direkt nach dem Film hier gelandet. Es war grosses Kino, hat spass gemacht und ich wurde wunderbar unterhalten. Ich arbeite sein Jahren täglich mit ki und programmiere Maschinen. Yeah the plot was fairly simple. A do or die seemingly suicide mission against a high tech generic bad guy faction. Surprisingly this film had some heartfelt feels in some places and not just the Iceman stuff. One of those feel good triumph over adversity type of movies for sure. On reflection after watching this several times now the rewatchability for this movie is off the scale.… Expand

It’s a nonstop literally edge of your seat thrill that has more heart than many movies thrown in for good measure that you will make you want to tear up at several points but also some well placed appropriate humor to balance it. Has just enough nostalgia to bring back good memories of the original, while working those references in organically so they don’t detract from the story this movie is telling. I’ve been caught saying this is what the Star Wars sequels should have been, a movie that introduces us to a new generation of interesting heroes who share the limelight, while still bringing us back an older, somewhat wiser, and more world weary version of our old heroes who are still very much the people we remember them to be from the old movie.
