While I get that this movie has gotten some unfair criticisms, that is to be expected as people have set the bar pretty high for Don Bluth. Personally, I liked this movie and the story it told. Personally, I liked this movie and the story it told. A real shame that they didn't make the movie just a bit longer to go into a bit more depth with some of the side characters and sub plots. I can easily see this movie being expanded into a series, and perhaps an animated mini-series would have been better as there is just so much lore that it tries to introduce in such a small amount of time. Animation is just spectacular. Voice actors are well cast and do their job well enough. Overall: A very good movie, just a shame that it does not live up to its potential as it could have been allot more than it was. Expand

It's alright. I don't think it's quite up to the standard of Don Bluth's earlier films like The Land Before Time, but it's not bad. The CGI and animation blend together fairly well.

I always found the film rather thought provoking, because I first watched it while I was playing Mass Effect, and one central idea in the film captured my imagination. Cause see, humanity at the beginning of the movie almost goes extinct. They're scattered to the far reaches of the galaxy as refugees. The main character, a young teenage male named Cale Tucker, is stuck working at an asteroid salvage yard. He's kinda lonely there, surrounded by aliens. Luckily, he eventually encounters an attractive human girl named Akima.

Now, what I always wondered was what would have happened if he had never lucked into finding another human girl? What if he really was alone on that alien asteroid facility? This is a teenage guy, after all. How do you deal with being horny all the time without having any chance for sex? Sure, you can masturbate, but how long can you do that before pondering the possibility of having sex with an alien girl? It's kinda gross and disturbing, because that would be bestiality, but eventually you'd have to consider it, right? The months and years pass by. Is he able to hold onto his humanity? Will he give into his hormones and try to romance and **** an alien?

It's something to think about.

It has a massive following, but I don't really understand why.

The movie revolves around the main character, Kale, who has been somehow encoded with a map to Titan, humanity's chance at recovery. Why this has been done to Kale is never explained. Along the way, he gets a variety of aliens friends, whose personalities flipflop essentially at random, to help.

Literally everything in this movie is a cliche. There is not a single original thought in this movie's head. Besides a decent presentation and some okay voice acting, this movie is bottom of the barrel C-list garbage.

Its not a kids movie; its a movie for preteens and teens. But it didn't really quite ever make up its mind. The movie is overall quite decent; while it got poor reviews its really not bad. Its a decent movie. It also has the ultimate bit of Fridge Logic - years after the fact, I finally got that the Drej, the energy beings, had been entirely justified in attacking the Earth as they ended up doing exactly what the Drej were afraid of, using it as a weapon against them. The movie is not amazing, but its not terrible. It has a decent enough plot, and the characters are fine. Its worth watching, but its not a must-see movie. Expand

I believe that this is one of the most underrated movies of all time. It was a fun concept and the CGI was awesome. The only complaint I have is that it should have been live action or 100% animation, not something in between. It was a little disorienting to watch because of the mix of CGI and hand drawn cartoons. If you can get past that, this is a great film for any Science Fiction fan! Expand

II remember liking this movie as a kid, back when it came out, but wasn't sure if it would hold up as an adult. I recently discovered it has a pretty substantial cult following, so I watched it again, for the first time in over a decade. I gotta say, I'm firmly on the side of those who think this film is underrated. It got the shaft at the time of release, due in part to poor marketing, plus western audiences not quite grasping the idea of an animated film for a slightly older audience than usual (keep in mind, we were just coming out of the Disney Renaissance, at the time). It's, by no means, a perfect film, but it's definitely far better than it was initially received.

Now, the film does have a few major flaws: the plot is average at best in terms of sci-fi, the characters could've been better developed and the universe more fleshed out. That said, there's something very likeable about this film. It has a sort of largeness of spirit to it, and you can sense the potential it had, even if it didn't fully live up to it. Also, it's just cool to see a Western animated film willing to push boundaries.

Interestingly enough, the universe of Titan AE *is* expanded upon quite well in spin-off novels and comics. It's just a bit baffling as to why none of this is seen in the film itself. If this were made into a series and streamed on Netflix or Hulu, I can see it being much more successful with today's audience than it was back in 2000.

However for me it never gets immersive and enjoyable enough to be rememberable. It was a box office failure and caused the termination of Fox Animated Studios (Even if it was not that awful or garbage). I questioned myself for a long time what this movie is missing. I came to the conclusion that unremarkable while being a fitting description is not clarifying enough. The characters are mostly not immersive and could barely win me over at the end, the story takes too much time which includes uninteresting parts, there are not many highlights and the worldbuilding which is a strength show's only small fractions. With the last I mean they neglect the show not tell rule in movies. A lot is explained that would be far better (and awesome) if it was shown or sometimes shown in more details (impacts, better / longer set up etc). The plot is set in the 31 century. Mankind has technologically evolved and explored space meeting several alien species. However the recent technological advancement also alarmed the Drej which are energy based advanced aliens. Humanity is on the brink of becoming dangerous for them and they dont take this kindly. It is the story Cale Tucker whose father was a remarkable scientist and this catches up to him. Here I stop. Like I said on paper the story is good and I could retell it in a way that you will be hyped. However the actual experience is weaker and I was thinking to quit watching a few times or use the fast forward option. The characters are also solid but not remarkable. I think Cale Tucker is not a good protagonist. I find Joseph Korso, Preedex Yoa and Akima Kunimoto are better characters. I say it is an acceptable cast with some strengths and no awful mistakes but too less great moments. Animation wise it is a good movie. I think everything looks good and there is nothing to critize here. The voice cast hast a lot of big names with for example Ron Pearlman, Drew Barrymore, Matt Damon and Bill Pullman. I think we good a good performance here and all errors are at least partly blame able on the script. The soundtrack is fine too. Overall it is an unremarkable movie. It has its meits and you can see sparkles of great ideas. However the negatives hold this movie back. It is a perfect example for a 5/10 rating for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
