This movie takes the musical he wrote earlier and expands it with dramatic interludes that explore the writer’s personal life and inspirations. In the lead is Andrew Garfield, who’s energetic, yet troubled character is captured with playful energy and delightful singing/dancing skills. Director Lin-Manuel Miranda has tendered the offstage life and musical moments with enthusiastic skill. Look for him as a line cook in the cameo-laden “Sunday” (also featuring André De Shields, Bernadette Peters, Joel Gray, Chita Rivera and more). Fans of musical theatre (and Rent, of course) will be thrilled with this engaging portrayal that’s full of heart and appealing musical numbers. Expand

His lead performance here is incredible! His singing and Miranda's songs are so much fun to listen to and are easily the highlight of this film! The story does feel a bit generic and 'been there done that', especially in terms of musicals, but this is mostly offset by a charming cast (Vanessa Hudgens and Robin de Jesus are also worth mentioning for their supporting turns), reliably clever and inventive tunes from Miranda's genius mind, and a somewhat formulaic story that's still worth rooting for and that will make you want to stand up and cheer by the end of it.

Garfield is a powerhouse

A musical semi-biography about Jonathan Larson on Netflix.

Let's tackle the elephant in the house, Andrew Garfield. This man is unbelievable. He fully embraced the character to the point of becoming the person. Whenever he started singing, he was elevated to another dimension and I was hooked. I don't know much about the musical or the composer, but I feel like they're exactly like what was on screen.

As a musical, this was a pretty strong feat. The director, Miranda, who was the composer of another big musical earlier this year, In the Height, so it's not surprising that with Garfield's performance, every piece of music was great and full of energy. Some of the songs were silly, but they were creative in terms of lyrics and performance.

I really enjoyed the movie, but the last 20-30 minutes were a little weak. It didn't have the emotion I wanted, and the last song was a little boring and not so necessary, but it's Larson's song, so I can't complain.

Overall a great musical that showcased the rough side of Broadway as well as the 90s plight.

Tick Tick Boom the musical draws much of its power from Larson's successor work Rent and his untimely death. The film has the benefit of drawing on that hindsight and Miranda does a great job highlighting the show's themes against Larson's real life. I think the musical, and the film, could use some lyrical reworking. The songs are often a bit too literal with their message, like the characters are just singing their internal monologue. Watching TTB and Rent, it's clear how much better Larson's writing gets over time.

Hopefully Miranda continues to bring new and underappreciated musicals to the screen. There are a lot of great shows that wouldn't get a chance on Broadway that would spring to life on screen.

With an almost totally absent back story about the play, the production's semi-autobiographical protagonist and most of the key figures in his life (both on stage and in real life), viewers who aren't already familiar with the source material come in at a distinct disadvantage. Is this supposed to be a cinematic translation of the stage production? A film biography of the musical's composer? Some combination of the two? That, in itself, is never made especially clear, leaving audiences wondering exactly what the picture is trying to be. And, when the narrative veers off in an array of different, often-unexplained directions, the story wanders aimlessly, focusing more on attempting to create a series of "memorable" musical numbers, an elusive feat given how eminently forgettable and pretentious most of the compositions truly are. The screenplay's repeated treatment of such recurring themes as "the pain of the tortured artist" and "the anguish of time escaping us" grows progressively tiresome after multiple iterations, leaving viewers anxious to see the picture get on with the story. To the film's credit, it features fine performances by Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp and Judith Light, all of whom valiantly attempt to make the most of what they have to work with; it's just a shame that they didn't have a better script at their disposal. In the end, for those who are ardent fans of Broadway musicals and the work of Jonathan Larson, this reverential tribute might make for worthwhile viewing, but, for the casual movie fan, this one leaves much to be desired. The story of Jonathan Larson, upon which this autobiographical musical came to life, is both inspiring and crushingly sad.

Someone who worked so hard to get into Broadway and had his life cut short just before the musical he created became one of the most famous musicals in history is certainly one of those stories that is hard to digest.

And while I'm all for his story being told in film, it is also fair to admit that the director, a first-time director, makes constant mistakes in a story that basically just builds itself in a style that is too simplistic to create a better impression.

The most crucial of these mistakes is how the structure of the film feels rushed and cramped.
There are scenes that verge on the corny and implausible because Lin-Manuel Miranda doesn't make them flow properly.

One problem I've always had with musicals is when in one scene the characters suddenly start singing without the musical number coming naturally, and tick, tick....BOOM! suffers a lot from that, and I didn't like it.

But I can also admit its good stuff and especially mention the really good work of Andrew Garfield, who gets right into the role.

He certainly carries the whole weight of the film and does it quite well.
He's the only member of the cast to stand out, but that's okay, the film does after all belong to his character and Garfield owns the screen.

Ultimately, this little musical won't do much for those involved, not even for its director who is already quite famous for other things, but who evidently feels a strong connection to the story, but tick, tick....BOOM! is still a film worth enjoying as entertainment. It has nothing more to prove.

I don't doubt that people who see it and don't know the story of its main character will be inspired by it, and that's really the best profit this film will get, because credits for posterity isn't something it's really going to achieve.

I’ve never listened or watched any plays by Jonathan Larson but now I want to. After reading up on him more after this movie, I can say that Andrew Garfield absolutely nails him. His movements from what I saw feel perfect and the performance itself is just phenomenal. It’s probably my 2nd favorite Andrew Garfield performance behind The Social Network. His performance is also one of my favorites of the year. The other performances in the film like from Robin de Jesús are also phenomenal. The music and musical sequences are fantastic. Each piece sounds incredible and does a great job at adding to the story and when the film decides to have these long song sequences, they are very intricately planned and directed beautifully. Lin-Manuel Miranda did a fantastic job for his first major directoral debut. His style is plastered all over this film and it works beautifully. I would love to see him direct more musicals. The writing here works wonders as well. Each person feels brilliantly characterized and how it incorporates the one man play into the film is done almost perfectly with it maybe feeling off once or twice. If you like musicals or Lin-Manuel Miranda, then I would definitely check this out. Expand

Andrew Garfield is an absolutely titanic actor in this film, and his work learning to sing, but play piano, and perfectly portray Larson is abundantly clear. Alexandra Shipp plays her part wonderfully and has a shockingly beautiful voice, and is joined by the capable Vanessa Hudgens and Joshua Henry who help to give the harmonies that make so many of the songs sparkle. Speaking of the songs, if you love Rent, then this show will excite you greatly. There are so many wonderful songs in this show that will become part of any theater fan’s collections. Finally, the cinematography shows some real creativity, and this film does a great job of utilizing the merits of film as a medium distinct from the stage. Overall, I cannot rave about this movie enough, and will be forever saddened by the Oscar snubs. Expand

Andrew Garfield was a thrill to watch, capturing Larson’s mannerisms without devolving into mimicry, but, more importantly, Larson’s unwavering passion, commitment, and, to a point, unvarnished selfishness. (Also, who knew Garfield could sing?) And Robin de Jesus, the emotional muse of the story, gave a beautifully nuanced performance as Larson’s best friend Michael. Garfield earned that Oscar nomination, and de Jesus was snubbed one.

Another treat was the myriad of Broadway alumni - legends, actors and composers - scattered throughout the movie - particularly in, but not exclusively to - the musical Moondance diner scene, “Sunday,” Larson’s - and in turn Manuel’s - tribute to Sondheim (who, BTW, has one of those aforementioned cameos in the film - albeit, only via voicemail).

It’s a gorgeous work, and I can’t wait to watch it again.
