It’s a spectacular visual adventure! The cinematography makes the movie, the special effects make the movie become a tale worth seeing.

Tilda Swinton plays an academic who attends a literary conference in Istanbul and discovers a magic bottle that contains a genie or a Djinn, as they're called in this tale (played by Idris Elba). Thus begins what's basically a two-hander, where he relates tales of his journey thru several thousand years and two relationships. These flashbacks provide breaks from their hotel-room discourse. Her character basically gets to listen, while he spins his stories. Even so, both actors bring their captivating talent to give the characters life and depth. Miller has crafted a somewhat sweet fantasy that's quietly examines storytelling and romance. Expand

I mean, I won't say it wasn't made for all audiences, because frankly I'd be lying, but that in no way means it's complicated or hard to digest, but it certainly doesn't seek to appeal to the masses and that's okay. Well maybe not quite because one way or another this film will be a severe financial failure, but Miller didn't make a bad movie. It may fall short of being spectacular or extraordinary, but it is a complete and enjoyable film.

Tilda Swinton, as always, never disappoints, but Idris Elba's Djinn leaves the most striking impression; his characterization is only matched by his peculiar accent and the sadness in his eyes.

Although this was advertised more like an action film, it was nice to encounter something smaller in scale. Miller constructs a cautionary tale that takes a look at the unavoidable solitude that sometimes consumes our every cell. The story becomes a little convoluted at times, and the third act comes a little out of nowhere, but the beautiful ending justifies this direction.

The CGI is good too. All the particles, vapors, and textures look amazing. 'Three Thousand Years of Longing' feels like a stretch exercise before venturing one more time into the infernal madness that 'Furiosa' sure will be.

Fascinating concept with a solid cast and overall production value. It ticks almost every fantasy film element for me and yet it never quite suprised me beyond the average needle often enough to become a classic. Very good film.

Very little of it actually. The FX of the old eras were really good. The designing and visuals were interesting to look at. The music was a part, I didn't feel that much in the movie. I give it 75%. I think that was a good movie but a bit long. You should see it, for the acting and the nice visuals. Expand

A love story about stories. Behind the sumptuous visuals and the spellbinding language, the magical storytelling dives deep, resulting in a subtle but stirring emotional finale. I was moved without feeling manipulated. Bravo.

Solid story, good script and soundtrack, clever visuals and use of CGI, with a balanced running time of 1hr 48min.

Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba carry their roles with gravitas and the chemistry between them is obvious. They are both, after all, good actors. The supporting actors do a good job of supporting the story as it progresses through the chapters - which is exactly what they're supposed to do.

I wouldn't call it a chick flick because I'm really not into them yet I liked this.

A great way of escaping for a couple of hours.

For me 10/10 for multiple reasons. It will appeal most, to those with an interest in the subtle truths of love, love as a subtle mystery. I think the entry point into this tale for many people is the old advice, "If you own a bird locked inside a cage; and, want to know if you have established a bond of love and trust with it, set it free and see if it returns to you--or not"

Exceptional directing (in films, stories inside larger stories notoriously challenge directors to make them feel substantial)

The New Yourker's Anthony Lane complains, "The movie, though a frantic treat for the retina, is also oddly inactive." Anthony, were you expecting the third act to be Miller's Fury Road? As a script it has two aims. One is it has to find a new, satisfying conclusion to a very tired narrative cliche, usually resolved by a trick ironic ending. Second, the script wants both characters to thrive, prosper and learn more about the Inner Game of Love. It's a tall order. Most writers fail at such challenges. James Bond only ever learns about the Outer Game of Love. Nor is this Harry Potter and the Djinn. Those are much easier to write.

"The craft Miller brought to Fury Road’s relentless chases is now channeled into wondrous stillness, a canvas meant to capture the sheer yearning at the heart of a story" Joshua at Polygon

"Three Thousand Years Of Longing" finds Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton giving things their all in a story that feels a lot more inconsequential than it should. The esoteric and abnormal structure is to be admired, as I quite liked the vignettes littered throughout. I just don't think any of it felt like it amounted to much in the end. There are also a few effects here and there that evoke laughter, when I don't think that was necessarily the intended result. You have to love a movie taking a crack at a fairly low-concept, but execution is key. In this case, I don't think this is the best version this could have been. Expand

It has some cool ideas but it’s structure and pacing kill this movie. The movie presents itself with Elba’s character talking about different tales and stories to Tilda Swinton’s character. The stories themselves are definitely very visually interesting and conceptually interesting but some are just kind of dull and some are very engaging. The final story that Idris Elba tells is easily the best. However the transitions from story to story is really bad. One transition has Elba and Swinton finish an argument before Elba abruptly starts his next tale. The story then just becomes a completely different and odd love story in the last 20 minutes that doesn’t fit very well with the movie and comes out of nowhere. It feels like George Miller had 2 different ideas for movies but shoved both of them together without finding a decent way to blend them together into one. The films technical aspects are all pretty great though. The cinematography, production design, and visual effects are all really great especially the cinematography. Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba both give good performances however Swinton’s character really isn’t developed enough for me to care about her. The film does a good job at developed Elba’s character out. There are a lot of great technical aspects to this movie but it’s poor execution really takes everything down. You can probably pass on this unless you’re interested in the premise. Expand

"The flaw of this film is that it does not express any desire to satisfy the audience." Feature lenght for festivals (6 minutes of applause at Cannes) rightly snubbed by spectators right from the test screenings. In the "mythos-logos debate" Miller already knows which side to take, having reinvented himself as creator/narrator of fantastic worlds. Yet, even if inspiring by "One Thousand and One Nights", the single stories on the past of the Genius / Djinn are not exciting, interesting, engaging, the praise of narratology does not become visionariness and the tales seem to be more read than depicted between the two protagonists in bathrobes sitting in a hotel room. The film itself feels rushed and a bit disjointed, and the philosophical and psychological concepts of loneliness, wish and what we would like are relevant but superficially explored.
