Easily one of my top 5 movies of the year (along with Columbus, LadyBird, and Wind River). The cast is incredible, to a person, but the clear star of the show is Frances McDormand, who lets it all hang out. The performances are all Oscar grade and writer/director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths) has topped his own exceptional work with this profane and profound film. The story takes unexpected twists, the emotions range from fury to empathy and the script is full of outrageous, surprising dialogue. A stunningly told story of a mother's lust to uncover who killed and raped her daughter, and the struggles of small town pushback as she puts the police force on blast with three billboards. A story of revenge and redemption with excellent acting by all involved. It's a tense movie that's near perfect. I very much enjoyed this.… Expand

Walking into “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” you expect to be wowed by Frances McDormand not only by the word of mouth but just by taking one look at the movie trailer and you are not disappointed.A Master Class in acting

Walking into “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” you expect to be wowed by Frances McDormand not only by the word of mouth but just by taking one look at the movie trailer and you are not disappointed. Mildred Hayes is a hard, sassy talking, take no bull from anyone, headstrong woman who doesn’t give an inch and gets laughs just by the way she delivers a zinger. Her daughter had been raped, killed and burned alive 7 months before and the case seems to be cold and she won’t stand for it.

She rents 3 billboards on a very seldom driven road stating 1) RAPED WHILE DYING 2) AND STILL NO ARRESTS and 3) HOW COME, CHIEF WILLOUGHBY? Along with everything else Mildred has the guilt of the last words saying to her daughter, “I Hope you do get raped!” in anger and frustration with her. As horrible as that sounds you are on her side no matter what she does and says and you never know what that will be!

As good as McDormand is, and she is good, Woody Harrelson, as Chief Willoughby, matches her anger, frustration with the absence of leads and not being able to help the woman though they are alike in many ways. He has problems of his own to face and there is a 2-3 minute scene between him and his wife Anne, played by Abbie Cornish, showing what love is all about. He also, obviously, loves his 2 daughters.

Giving Harrelson and McDormand a run for best performance in this movie is saying a lot and Sam Rockwell as a dim-witted, racist, violent police officer does just that. Caleb Landry Jones as the advertiser who rents the billboards to Mildred is fierce though seems to be a bit too young for the role. John Hawks, as Mildred’s wife beating ex-husband Charlie and his new 19 year old girlfriend Samara Weaving are just two of the townspeople against her and the billboards. Lucas Hedges, as the son of Mildred and Charlie, definitely his mother’s son, Clarke Peters is a new police chief while Peter Dinklage is a car dealer who gives Mildred an alibi when she needs one and Sandy Martin as Rockwell’s mother all add to the movie.

This is a deep movie in spite of the foul language and the many laughs from situations, but it has many dark moments, a lot of violence, resolved and unresolved relationships and though all the characters are frayed in one way or another you come to care for them because of the screenplay and direction by Martin McDonagh.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, aside from its cumbersome title, will be mentioned in many categories during award time and is a must see.… Expand

McDormand makes you feel the main character’s pain, sadness, and frustration at every turn in the plot. But I am not going to give any details about the story since part of the pleasure of this film is watching events unfold and discovering why Hayes is the person she is when you first meet her. I have seen less than a half dozen exceptional films this year so far, and this is definitely one of them.… Expand

Plain and simple, this movie is a “Wow!” Go see it. "Chiquitita, tell me what's wrong?"

Out of all the films I've seen at LIFF, this is easily my favorite and a great way to end this years festival. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is dark, funny, heart-felt, and a breath of fresh air. Never slowing down or drag on. It's plays around with genres and has a lot to say, politically or truth.

This is the best I've seen from Frances McDormand, which isn't new because it's McDormand. She delivered a performance that will get her another nomination (or win) at the Oscars. You can feel her pain and hate, but also see a softer side to her character which makes you have sympathy for Mildred.

Sam Rockwell, on the other hand, gives one of his finest performance of the film. The character Dixon is short-tempered and not very bright. What stops him from being unlikeable is Rockwell charm and honesty. Dixon has a tremendous arc of learning to care about others rather then just being angry.

Caleb Landry Jones, John Hawkes, Woody Harrelson, and Peter Dinklage were all superb. All of them having brilliant moments in whatever screen time they have. Not Lucas Hedges, I thought he was awful in this.

Martin McDonagh just keeps hitting the home runs through out his career. The script was the real show stealer here. The dialogue is so rich and masterful, it keeps you locked from start till finish. Cinematography, editing, and music are all top of the range.

What else can I say, I loved it every second of it.… Expand

I have just witnessed one of the— narratively speaking —more intense feature films ever, one that, surprisingly, doesn't require Parisian landscapes or delicate photographs to be the most effortlessly acidic film offer in a very long time, one incorporating a really powerful drama and a delicious caustic black humor, putting you as a voyeur of the pain of others, a depraved buy purgative activity.

The leading role of " Fargo" wonderful actress Frances McDormand, which will surely lead her name to global media focus, she expels strength, even when her heart is broken into hundreds of pieces. This impetuosity is precisely the agent allowing an almost instantaneous connection from the first scene on the road, that imperfection, remorse and feeling, seeking vindication in such emotional ways that announces the establishment of a new Ellen Ripley, for indie-drama genre, her brave nature, supported on the grief of a mother, stirs up a sensational feeling from which the film drinks on several times to achieve an unbeatable narrative cadence. The second great discovery is underestimated-actor Sam Rockwell. Rockwell returns with a worthy-recognition role, a really big one, Dixon, an alcoholic sheriff who doesn't frequent good manners, an arrogant policeman who doesn't care to pass over the world to be victorious. Needless to say, this actor executes one of the most powerful moments of the film at the hands of his character. Last, but not least, is a not-remotely-unusual player, as most of his performances get to touch the overwhelming, the really overwhelming. Willoughby is a police chief who failed to fully resolve a murder and rape crime, moreover, he's outweighed by repercussions that cause the three billboards of the protagonist and a life-or-death decision, here a controversial debate rises up, to confront a dreaded fatal fate. A huge praise deserves some set-pieces pushing beyond the mettlesome narrative development. The film is rich in sequences that transmit by means of the pictures, and although it's almost impossible to avoid spoilers, it can be said that such strong points are distributed proportionately between the scenes where supporting and leading characters are involved in other words, between sequences that don't focus only on the bad-ass protagonist, even though, indirectly, all the moves lies on her. A mother, two local sheriffs, flames, explosions, love affairs, three billboards on deep-scarlet background and serious lettering, a surly dentist and a hired murderer are the ingredients used for the construction of a film which is based on its potent and articulated screenplay.

The score is brutal. From the start, I have considered musical accompaniments as key pieces for the success of transmission of emotions, of truth; A filmmaker must get to most possible resources to make sense of the specific and general purposes of the story, so I personally think that a simple melodic structure supports fabulous acting and creative task. Carter Burwell, who curiously had also worked with Mr. McDonagh in "Seven Psychopaths", has behind him gold scores of the stature of "Carol", "Anomalisa" and "Mr. Holmes"; Now, he reappears with full hands through compositions that are rightly coupled with the most heartfelt moments of the film, His score for this story express, on many occasions, more than pictures, because from masterful and harmonic sounds he transmits grief, tribulation, intractability and madness accompanying the characters, while potentiates his chances to opt for the coveted golden man. We will have to keep a close eye on this New Yorker, as he insinuates being the next monster producing excellent soundtracks for deep films thanks to his undeniable talent.

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" written and directed by Martin McDonagh will make history in my review Watchlist as the first motion picture in which I didn't evaluate technical or visually artistic aspects, which clearly are executed in a beautiful, crude and stunning way, however, I haven't considered them as a fundamental part because this film is purely story and characters. I was skeptical about a true audiovisual production mustn't be made up of visual, narrative and creative art, however, this work has shown me that art can be conceived by putting some components a greater importance than others, but finally, they are all there. A blistering catharsis led by top-notch performances and a glorified direction, this film is the most human, poignant, shocking and coherent drama I have seen in a long time, a major achievement for cinematographic narrative that reveals the potential emergence of a feasible writing maestro, while it serves as a magnet to unite a hugely talented group of people who make the film what it is.… Expand

It tells the story of Mildred, a mother of two whose daughter had been murdered and raped; as there is a lack of interest from the local police on the murder of her daughter she decides to take justice in her own hands and push the police to restart the investigation in the form of three billboards with messages against the chief of the town. Little does she know that everything will go off the rails from there….

The movie on itself is a pretty worthwhile experience, there is plenty of good acting, specially from the main leads played by Frances McDormand (in probably her best performance to date) and Sam Rockwell. Their characters, despite having differences on their perception of justice, manage to deliver a solid and believable hate relationship that evolves in such a natural scheme that you find yourself astonished on how almost perfectly everything plays out for them at the end of the film. There is always a feeling of unpredictability to it, you never know where the story is going to go, you could certainly say that most of the movie is composed of plot-twists but it is mind-blowing to know that they don't feel forced at any moment as the story progresses with a pretty light pace without feeling over-stuffed during its whole runtime.

The technical aspects are breathtaking, McDonagh proves to be a masterful director once again with a familiar story that takes a bizarre approach to its subject matter. There is plenty to enjoy from masterful directing to a beautiful soundtrack composed of country and classic music that turn Three Billboards into a remarkable craft. Motherhood, vengeance, redemption and regret are only a handful of the themes touched in Three Billboards. The emotional parts hit you hard most of the time because everything about it feels so authentic, it is an amazing work of passion. Conclusion: Three Billboards is probably the best movie to come out on 2017 and its impact will remain as one of the most heartbreaking black comedies of the decade, the conflict feels real and the characters, the heart of the film, make it worth a watch.… Expand

You don’t need me to set the story up, the trailer did that just fine, Mildred's daughter has been murdered and months later the police have nothing to show for it so in an attempt to get some movement on the case and throw it back into the spotlight she rents three billboards with a powerful message to the police. It’s easy to tell when you’re watching a terrific film and from the beginning Three Billboards grips you and doesn’t let go once. Who doesn't love a bit of dark humour? Martin McDonagh has found the balance between comedy and tragedy, such a morbid topic handled to perfection. A movie that cares about its characters, keeps the story unpredictable and honestly what more do I need to say to convince you? McDormand is exceptional, perfectly capturing the pure rage of a grieving mother. Sam Rockwell has the best character development I've seen in a film this year, giving an Oscar worthy performance. I cannot recommend this highly enough, I loved every minute of it, I'm dying to see it again and I urge you all to see it, no exceptions.… Expand

Sam Rockwell plays one of the most dynamic characters I have ever seen on film, and Woody Harrelson both delights and pulls at our heartstrings. The rest of the cast is stupidly perfect, with amazing supporting performances from John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, and Lucas Hedges among others. The script and story of Three Billboards is powerful, heartbreaking, and hilarious throughout the movie. McDonagh really nails the cycle of anger and pointless violence in the world, and the film smartly sidesteps all cliches and pitfalls of a movie of this genre and caliber. I won't spoil anything about the plot, as it is best experienced "going in blind" as they say, but in a year of strong movies, I think we have a clear frontrunner for Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture.… Expand

It handles themes of guilt and forgiveness with care, after putting McDonagh's nihilist touch on them; nobody is ever really forgiven and everyone is guilty of something. Frances McDormand gives a powerful performance, rivaling that of her Oscar winning role in 'Fargo'. She plays a grieving mother with the guts of John Wayne and power of a mother's rage. Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson also give strong supporting turns, but are somewhat overshadowed by the gravity of McDormand performance. It's hilarious, heartbreaking, and ultimately, hopeful film that I highly recommend.… Expand

Although some of the characters try to be funny in times of stress and tension, which makes them insignificant in my opinion, the whole cast is amazing, but obviously the most outstanding is Frances McDormand's character. She is an unfiltered psycho who seeks justice for the death of her daughter. She's everything in this film, even her facial expressions are amazing. The film manages a very interesting comedy, for example, Carter Burwell puts a slow music to put you in a sad mood and make you feel for the characters and suddenly... you laugh. Even the most despicable **** -- people that you want with all your heart to hate -- are given a supurb level of depth and development; in addition to this, the close-quarters small town setting gives an unsettling intimacy to the vitriolic and sometimes outrageously violent events of this film. Some people have expressed concerns over this movie's inconsistent tone. Honestly, I feel that the level of lightheartedness and comedy that this movie hangs onto balances pretty perfectly with the more prominent, painful, emotional aspects. It's part of what makes this movie so interesting (and enjoyable) for me. I'm sad that this didn't resonate as well with other people. The performances are all fantastic and commendable in their own right, (especially from Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell) and you should watch it if you can. If nothing else, I promise you'll be thinking about it for a little while after you've left the theater.… Expand

Not only is the movie's narrative written tightly, but throughout it explores the theme of how hatred and revenge bring people together, and not always in a virtuous way. Frances McDermott and Sam Rockwell deliver stunning performances and the direction makes the movie multi-dimensional in terms of energy and tone. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this film but I’d say I like the main character Mildred’s determination to solve her daughter’s police case. It’s essentially about a woman very upset at the cops. A no-nonsense mother who really wants to get the job done and will stop at nothing. It contains probably one of the best movie scenes about burning down a police station, ever. At the end of the film, I think the director could have gone further and I would have liked a good 'ol hand to hand fight between the mom and her daughter’s killer. The film kinda leaves the audience hanging at the end for a real resolution.
This was an impactful film but thankfully not too impactful. Every filmmaker has an obligation not to make any film too real, otherwise, we would have every mother burning down every police station because of their failure in solving actual crimes and a focus on speeding tickets.… Expand

It's not the first film where the police are seen as villains, but it's far from being a lighthearted film, with friendly heroes and execrable villains. The film strives to create and highlight the nuances of the plot and each of the characters.

I remember perfectly that this film was one of the heavyweights of the 2018 Oscars, and one of the great candidates for the Oscar for Best Picture. It didn't win the statuette, nor a good part of the nominations received, but it left the Dolby Theater with two awards in important categories: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Personally, I believe that the film would also have been a fair deserving of the award for Best Original Screenplay, since the differential of the film, for me, is to give us a script with an elegant and well done story, with drama and depth, and in that each character deserved a close look and an interesting development. The biggest problem with this incredible script turns out to be, in fact, the open ending and the feeling that it doesn't give the audience the conclusion they expect to see. It's not about wanting a happy ending... it's just about wanting an end point and not just ellipses.

In the wake of the story of the unsolved crime and the billboards, we observe the tense relationship and mutual misunderstandings between mother and daughter, and the way that mother feels remorse for the way she acted with her murdered daughter. We see how the police want to act, but they can't for lack of evidence, for being forced to follow the law and not being able to simply arrest everything and everyone or treat each one as a suspect. We see how honest and potentially good men can be lost if they do not have an opportunity to improve their conduct, and how there are indeed people who are committed to their work, despite the criticism they receive. And we see how, at times, the voice of the people can be more caustic and unfair than any other.

Martin McDonagh is a new director, who many didn't know well before this film. I had seen one of his films before, "Bruges", and he really improved a lot, not only as a director, but even as a screenwriter. Frances McDormand presents us a complete, intense, committed and powerful performance, which holds us from beginning to the end. Needless to say, it was probably her life's greatest work, and that it would be an injustice of titanic proportions not to reward it fairly, as it did. But she doesn't carry the film alone: Woody Harrelson is also very good here, in a difficult character that gives the film an added density. He also gave us, in this film, the best of himself. But even more powerful and intense is the work of Sam Rockwell, an actor I've never seen work at this level, and who was truly impressive in the way he grabbed the character and gave it body and density. The film also has satisfactory collaborations with Peter Dinklage (an actor who was not always treated well in the films he was in, despite being very good at what he does) and Caleb Jones.

Technically, the film is truly a quality parade. Let's start by looking at its elegant cinematography. With an exquisite work of filming and very well executed, the film has excellent colors, sharpness, framing and makes the best use of the beautiful filming locations where it was made. I especially enjoyed some shots at dusk, where the sunlight gives the scene a poignant nostalgia. The editing was equally well done, and the cuts are not even felt. The sets were very well done and are full of details, and I would highlight the police station or the store where Mildred works. Finally, we have to talk about the soundtrack, sad and introspective, signed by Carter Burwell, and the wise inclusion of the song "Last Rose of Summer" by the incredible voice of Renee Fleming, the icing on the cake in those opening scenes.… Expand

This said, amidst cancer, arson, and rape, the movie has a heart and brevity, it isn’t all sticks and stones. As was mentioned previously, the cast of characters all feel authentic and bound within the town of Ebbing. They give well-oiled performances, but Frances McDormand especially portrays a tortured mother, someone so filled with grief and hatred that she comes off as ruthless and inhuman. Despite her initial outward appearance, McDormand’s character, like many of the others in the film, is deeply multi-faceted and is constantly struggling to balance the many of life’s challenges thrown her way. The directing, cinematography and script are top notch, with some great camerawork and wonderful dialogue with some genuinely funny lines. Also add the incredible performances by Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson and you get a recipe for an almost flawless movie. The acting is definitely the best of this movie and what really helps to make it the amazing movie this is.

This is a well written and directed film by noted playwright Martin McDonagh as he guides the audience through the many complexities faced by each character in the story. This film, despite its 2 hour length, left this writer with disappointment that it ended and this is in no small part due to the perfect blending of fine acting, writing and directing resulting in a positive theatrical experience. I give an 8.0 rating with a suggestion that Ms. McDormand begin drafting her Oscar acceptance speech as soon as possible.… Expand

Honestly this whole thing succeeded because of Frances McDormand. What really gives the story it's power is how well we are able to connect with her character. On top of being so well-written, McDormand's performance is what makes "MildredHonestly this whole thing succeeded because of Frances McDormand. What really gives the story it's power is how well we are able to connect with her character. On top of being so well-written, McDormand's performance is what makes "Mildred Hayes" so believable and sympathetic. That best actress award was completely deserved.


To me the movie was really about anger. We see the effects of it's festering and learn that the only way to get past some of it is to show empathy and actively try to move on. Although Three Billboards leaves it up in the air as to whether or not it is something we will ever be able to truly escape. Almost every character here is tragically flawed in some way. While McDormand is most certainly in the lead, the problems the rest of the characters are experiencing provide for a more compelling and morally complex dilemma the people of Ebbing find themselves in. McDonagh has no problem diving right into the dangers of human ignorance and hatefulness. Something that gives the film it's powerful and poignant dramatic edge.


Speaking of writer/director McDonagh, you can really feel his background as a playwright running through every aspect of Three Billboards. Sometimes there were scenes that I could truly see unfolding directly before me in a live performance onstage. It was as if I was almost experiencing the different acts unfolding as if in a performance theatre. This being a film though, the action unfolds in such a way that makes it feel more like real life as opposed to the more obvious simulation of one we get when we watch plays.


Not everything is gloom, doom, and all around seriousness in this movie. One thing that really surprised was how outright hilarious it can be. Mildred Hayes' sharp tongue and Sam Worthington's performance as a dimwitted cop allow for plenty of laughs. Their back-and-forth rivalry provides the comedic backbone of the film. It's a surprisingly naughty little movie at that as well. Vulgar and violent in ways that come across as a little kid having fun trying out his first dirty words. McDonagh proves unafraid to get with some of that more politically-incorrect humor. But rather that just indulging in it for the sake of doing so, he uses it as a way to show just how ignorant small southern towns can be. This is coming from somebody who has lived in a few.


You know, I don't think Caleb Landry Jones gets enough credit for his performance in this movie. He was actually my favorite side-character in here and despite having something of a smaller role his appearance was one of the more memorable aspects for me. But anyways, watch this movie. It's really fantastic and has a way of tickling your funny bone, punching you in the gut, and grabbing your heart all in a little under two hours. It deals with stuff that is very real and McDormand's performance needs to be seen.… Expand

How come,After months without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) rents out three billboards (that are located outside Ebbing, Missouri) and puts up the message “Raped while dying and still no arrests? How come, Chief Willoughby?” This causes mass outrage from an entire town of colourful characters who adore chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) including a “fat dentist”, a “lady with the funny eye” and Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell) a man who recently built a reputation for himself after beating up a black suspect. Or as Mildred colourfully puts it, Dixon has recently entered “the n***er torturing business”. Is she in the right to put up the billboards? Is she helping draw attention on her daughter's murder case? Or is she just a rude woman who should stop fighting people she shouldn’t consider her enemies? Who knows, but she’s doing it anyway. And in a strange way when I watched her stand up against everyone in the entire town I was reminded a little of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Just like Atticus she knows she’s fighting a losing battle and that no matter what she does she will never be able to bring her daughter back. She also knows that it’s unlikely that her daughter's killer will ever be found. But none of that matters because this is just something that she believes is the right thing to do. McDonagh’s previous films (Seven Psychopaths and In Bruges) have always been strong at balancing dark humour with thought provoking drama. But unlike his other work, the comedy for the most part is much more nuanced, with more subtle performances and a stronger focus on character development. Though it does still have his distinct language which constantly strives to challenge Goodfellas and South Park for the most swear words per minute of screen time. Plus he’s assembled an incredible ensemble cast, all of whom know just how to deliver McDonaghs dialogue and are all memorable in their own way.

But the two standouts in the cast are definitely McDormand and Rockwell. It’s kind of surprising seeing McDormand play a role whose personality is so polar opposite to Margo in Fargo. Whenever she’s on screen she’s such a dominating figure and has a brashness to say whatever she wants, no matter how reckless it is or how much harm it causes. She’s also brilliant at delivering McDonagh’s language. At the end of it I was pretty sure that I’d enjoy watching an entire film of McDormand just going around town and swearing at people (which to be fair is kind of what I saw). This film might also be Rockwell’s greatest performance yet. He’s the image of the cop that Americans fear to see. The kind who thinks that his badge is an excuse to do whatever he wants and not have to face any consequences for it. He does so many hateful and despicable things in the film, but somehow Rockwell never lets you lose all hope for him. You always feel like he’s going to do the right thing in the end, even if he’s going to do a lot of wrong things first. At times hilarious, at others sorrowful and constantly thought provoking, Three Billboards is easily McDonagh’s greatest work. It’s a film that has a certain level of humanity and moral ambiguity that will continue to resonate long after you’ve watched it.… Expand

This film is supposed to be darkly comic, apparently. I just thought it was funny. Sure, the presentation was a bit more gritty than in your average comedy, but I felt it was still a film made for laughs.

As with all the best comedies, the plot was as basic as it gets. But who needs a plot when you’ve got laughs. And there were plenty of twists and turns too. Things happened that even the savviest audience member wouldn’t have seen coming. Some of these unexpected moments demonstrated a braveness on the part of the film makers – writing out a major character halfway through the film.

Of the three main leads (Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell) it’s hard to say who takes the crown for best performance. McDormand’s character was an instant audience favourite, but I felt Rockwell owned the film. His portray of a confused thug seeing the error of his ways and becoming the remorseful anti-hero, undercut the witty dialogue and gave the film a real reason for being.

It’s always good to go into a film being slightly weary of the hype, and then almost instantly understanding what all the fuss was about. Time and possible awards (though the latter is not a measure of something’s worth) will see the greatness of Three Billboards only increase. Bravo to all concerned.… Expand

Great movie, that has this "coen" feeling to it. Its dark humor, sudden violence and funny characters, reminds me of Fargo.

The best quality of a movie is how it can play with your emotions. The empathy you can have for the characters is up to both the actors and the director. This movie pulls you emotional in so many directions, that you do not know whether to cry or laugh, get pissed off or clap your hands. While Frances McDormand is truly the star of this movie, and she deserves so much praise, it is both Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson that really shine bigger than life for their roles in this film. They have grown so much as actors over the years from comedic roles to this shows me their range and talent. I also have to give major props to Writer/ Director Martin McDonagh who gave life to this film by giving us some levity in between the tragic elements of the story. There is some serious deep stuff thrown at the movie goer, but letting us smile and laugh at such characters as Momma Dixon, (Sandy Martin), Frances's ex-husband, (John Hawke) and his young innocent girlfriend, (Samara Weaving) was the cornerstone of what makes this movie great. Even the subplots of Peter Dinklage's character, Kerry Condon who plays the sheriff's wife, and Abbie Cornish' marketing/ad guy let us feel so much in their scenes is a mark of truly brilliant storytelling. The director really made his actors' performances come to life, and as a movie goer, I am glad I choose to see it.

In closing, I do not give movies a 10 score. This is as close to a 10 as I will recognize. There is always room for improvement, so to give it a perfect score means that perfection was achieved. That no one can top it and never will is just not my thinking. So I leave a little space for more. 9.49 is where I am at. Great and memorable, but not legendary.… Expand

The film reflects the many flaws of our society and leaves us thinking about the different possibilities and the many things in life we can do to take one direction or the opposite. Also, that very often, things are left unresolved and one has to live with it. Homophobia, racism, cruelty, hypocrisy, and many other sides of human beings are tackled here. And not one main character is left out of that. Especially interesting the arc for one of the police officer´s character, played by Sam Rockwell. Frances carries the film perfectly too as only she knows. It doesn´t feel like something especially new or artistic, but it wins us with its unpredictable nature and entertainment value.… Expand

The actors in this film, particularly McDormand, are superb. The film can be extremely brutal and depressing at times and then out of the blue- quirky/funny. Not a perfect film but definitely a must-watch.

Movies with simple stories, told with a non-simple way pleases me very much. The way it shows how tenuous is the line between what you hate and you can become is amazing, the ambiguity that the character have is an exemplification of all of us, of how difficult is to keep ourselves whole in a world that surprise us every minute.
The acting and the script combined is what make this movie what it is, every character have his moment and a moment that show that every action results in a reaction, each people can react in a way and have different perspectives ate situations.Frances Macdormand plays a complex character, a broke person, sensitive for what she been through in her recent life, all the problems, the feel of guilt and unrighteousness that surround her. At the same time she is tough and rough, passing a strong image, from belief and from someone that would do anything for what she think is right, not letting anyone do sh*t to her.. Even that, this make she looks kind of who she hates in some moments.Woody Harrelson also does a phenomenal job, his character can make people be on his side or against him, isn't a unilateral movie, you can understand his side or you can think that he is lazy. His character have a impact that affect, causing a react in a lot of characters in the movie, each one having a different reaction and possibly changing the attitudes.Sam Rockwell have a great whole and a great character development, his character is possibly the one that have the best twist, his interpretation is great making you believe in what's going on with the character.
The soundtrack ins beautiful, putting you at the moment, and doing a great job in letting you down or excited with what is going on.
Everyday we are about to do a bunch of choices, one day we can do good and in the other no that much, just like the characters we are all ambiguous.
This is a rough movie, that gonna make you think some good stuff, a must much definely.… Expand

I don't want everyone to understand this movie, because it almost feels like a treat when you figure it all out. I barely have anything to complain about when it comes this Oscar-nominated movie. Period.

Well this is it, my last film of 2017.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the best closing film I could have asked for. An intelligent and interesting story that manages to combine a good drama with elements of black comedy thatWell this is it, my last film of 2017.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the best closing film I could have asked for. An intelligent and interesting story that manages to combine a good drama with elements of black comedy that although provide some relief, never make you lose sight of the rawness of the story that is narrating.

Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell deliver very good performances, especially McDormand who gives a strength and fierceness to her character that makes her at the same time admirable and resolute.

I admit that the movie has certain pauses of rhythm that can feel weird but in reality they don't affect the general performance of the story or the characters. The film is solid and remains so until the ending, which although it's ambiguous and does not really solve anything, as a spectator I didn't feel disappointed, because as it happens many times in real life with similar cases like the one that drives this film, it's that unfortunately, sometimes we don't get justice or answers. It's not nice but that's life. If you haven't seen it, do it.… Expand

Following my viewing of the Golden Globes, and more recently, the SAG awards, I decided that watching Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would most likely be a good idea. The film has performed exceptionally well so far this awardsFollowing my viewing of the Golden Globes, and more recently, the SAG awards, I decided that watching Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would most likely be a good idea. The film has performed exceptionally well so far this awards season, consistently winning many of the awards it was put up for. After being fortunate enough to see it, I can understand why.

I feel it is worth quickly adding that, while watching this film, I was quite tired. I’d seen Coco earlier that same day, and I rarely go out for that long a period. The fact that the film still made such an impact on me in that state is impressive.

Ordinarily, this isn’t the sort of film I’d be attracted to. I didn’t really recognise many of the actors going in, nor was it based on an existing property. To put it bluntly, it was a proper, standalone film. After seeing it, I was genuinely impressed.

Ordinarily, I would list highlights of a film, then delve into the issues. Now, however, I’m perplexed; the film did everything well, at least to an extent. There was only a few things I found issue with. The CGI (which was used incredibly sparingly) was often rather jarring. It didn’t fit with the rest of the gorgeously shot world. Though the locations are never astounding, Ben Davis makes even relatively mundane countryside look beautiful.

The characters shown within this film are rather fascinating. The events leading up to the film could almost be a film in themselves. Despite what reading a synopsis may imply, however, this film isn’t a murder mystery. The murder of Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand)’s daughter isn’t the focal point of the film. Instead, the main focus of the film is how the event impacts various people, and how they go on to deal with it. Each main character is rather layered, and could arguably be the lead in their own film.

Bringing these characters to life is a brilliantly talented cast. Frances McDormand deserves each award she receives. I feel the trailer actually does her character a disservice; after watching it, I felt that she was simply a vulgar, hateful woman taking her frustrations out on those around her. In reality, she’s a far more sympathetic character, who isn’t nearly as abrasive as the trailer makes her out to be. Woody Harrelson’s Chief Willoughby was probably my favourite character of the film, who, despite playing the straight man in many scenes, is able to bring levity and humour to the dark situations in which he finds himself. Sam Rockwell’s Dixon is also wonderful, though many people have taken issue with his character’s arc. Personally, I enjoyed it greatly, though it’s something to note.

Many of the supporting characters are hit or miss. I feel Peter Dinklage was brilliantly funny, though some of the others failed to steal a chuckle from me. The rest of the audience seemed to enjoy them, however, so it’s most likely a fault of my own.

I was pleasantly surprised by how violent this film is; the trailer makes it seem that violence is a punchline to a joke, but at times, the movie is genuinely brutal. It’s probably more violent than most modern horror films.

The soundtrack was actually rather enjoyable. The original scoring was great, and fit the setting perfectly. The other songs added each served their purpose, oftentimes accentuating the comedy within a scene.

For the most part, I found the writing great. The characters spoke like real (if dramatised) people, though occasionally there was some odd lines.

To conclude the review, I feel this was a truly impressive film, and I understand why it’s getting so many nominations. If you love film, I must recommend you give this one a watch. Thankfully, this isn’t one you need to see in the cinema; I think it could work just as well on a smaller screen. If you need a concrete ending, however, you may need to steer clear; it’s rather open ended. I feel Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri deserves a 9/10, and I look forward to seeing more films of a similar quality to this one.… Expand

Hate and forgiveness are the biggest themes of the movie, and the way forgiveness is portrayed on screen is really incredible. The characters are all interesting and very well acted. All in all, a really amazing movie that mixes depth and comedy very well with great acting.… Expand

I am a guy, I don't like emotional movies, but this movie had my eyes drawn to the screen and wanted to cry and laugh and be engaged at EVERY scene. Key word, EVERY...such great storywriting to accomplish that. HOWEVER, only a 9/10 because I thought the choice to not make the suspect the actual rapist was a miss in the storywriting. I thought this crazy story needed some closure, and to leave it hanging when they had the lay up so perfectly was a huge emotional miss and then to cut the last scene off just as it was ramping up to something very interesting was also a let down. What a great movie until the last few scenes though.… Expand

The emotional scenes where just simply a masterpiece and they delivered the feelings of sorrow, love, vengeance and anger in such a meaningful and artistic way. The director's style and choice in cinematography is simply something Iv'e never seen before. Fresh and very well executed. The movie is such an entertaining piece and it keep the tension high all the way through with it's amazing unforeseen events and turns that it depicts the struggle of real life perfectly. The shadiness and lies and every single detail was outstandingly executed. The characters are just so perfectly written and acted and such complex personalities with profound moral codes that it is hard to even start to comprehend yet still believable, because it strongly reflects the reality to much. The emotional power this movie has is just amazing. The music also helped the impeccable immersion and tension. The situations our main characters are presented with and interacting with each other are often grotesque. But the humor and funny situations are very well delivered as well. I honestly had gags in one minute and tears in my eyes the other minute. It's literally like a lifeline of emotional overwhelming project. Overall it's an amazing movie which it's a must watch if you can stomach the drama genre. It was always a 10/10 masterpiece but the conclusion and ending was a bit lack luster which cut right before the apex of the events. None the less the message is clear and strong visiting true problems in the world. AMAZING!!!!… Expand

A captivating fusion of great script-writing and great acting: I loved Mildred’s (McDormand’s) wit and boldness. The representation of women in this film is definitely contrary to stereotypes- Mildred is a **** lady and ‘Momma’ Dixon isA captivating fusion of great script-writing and great acting: I loved Mildred’s (McDormand’s) wit and boldness. The representation of women in this film is definitely contrary to stereotypes- Mildred is a **** lady and ‘Momma’ Dixon is anything but a doting mother. The film seemed to seamlessly switch between drama, comedy, dark comedy. Dixon, the emasculated, simple, racist policeman is the perfect respite from what could have been a wholly dark (and dull) storyline. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into this film- the choices of music e.g. 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' playing while Dixon listens in to the potential rapist and murderer of Angela.

One of my favourite scenes is of Dixon reading Willoughby's letter in the police station, while Mildred is firing molotov cocktails at him from the opposite building. The scene is so surreal and absurd, and good and bad seem to no longer be useful categorisations. The characters are trapped in a cycle of efforts to change things, which backfire and prove futile.

I found it sort of cute how in Willoughby's letter to his wife he says 'I know they were cheating' about his daughters; even in his state of mind, his humour remains. Willoughby's character is really amiable- even when Mildred shows no compassion when he tells her he has cancer, he can take her perspective, and even pays for the billboards for the next month. Mildred's confrontation with the pastor is half expected but the confidence and certitude with which she speaks (as well as her arguments) was a pleasure to watch. However Mildred hasn't considered the cost to her son, of this ferocious search for the truth behind her daughter's rape and murder. The characters’ actions bring about the opposite of what they intend, and attempts to right wrongs are doomed to failure. The humour twists into irony.

I think what makes this film so special is how the very dark subject matter of a teenage girl's rape and murder (Mildred's daughter) brings to the fore the dysfunction lying within almost all the characters, and underlying the situation. Nothing is sugar-coated: I found it realistic how Charlie (Mildred’s ex) is at one moment about to choke her to death, and then calm resumes when the two parents empathise with one another over the loss of Angela. The audience can see how these two people at some point in life were compatible- both being witty if anything. The characters are tangled in a set-up which is impossible to escape. No matter what they say or what they do, they cannot make a difference: They remain the toys of fate.… Expand

This week, Martin McDonagh’s tragedy of the human condition Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri made its way to the Lebanese box office.

A minimalist plot that follows Mildred Hayes, played by Frances McDormand, as she makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town, the film’s namesake, with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby, played by Woody Harrelson, the town's revered chief of police. Things only get worse, when Willoughby’s second-in-command Officer Dixon, palyed by Sam Rockwell, an immature mother’s boy with a taste for violence, gets involved.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri is an allegory to what happens when human beings are pushed too far.

Starting with Mildred Hayes, who is dealing with her daughter’s unsolved murder, the town of Ebbing’s non-dis, a French term meaning the things we bury deep within ourselves, begin to boil over and get exposed.

The film’s power comes from its masterful screenplay and multifaceted characters.

Written by McDonagh, the narrative explores what happens when rage can’t be calmed. As the tension mounts, the film delves into themes of division, anger and moral reckoning.

All of these ideologies and Mildred’s emotional quest are contrasted with the film’s dark comedy, a hefty challenge to any writer…but this is why the film is so memorable.

The overall tone of the film fits into an almost Greco-tragedy structure, where the characters simply fall victim to their ever-growing hatred.

The dialogue is both stylistic, almost Shakespearean at times, all the while being grounded and realistic, which brings a certain rawness to the narrative and the actors’ performances. It’s not a tale of smoke and mirrors or holier than thou attitude, on the contrary – the film is the uncensored, flawed, ugly, yet somehow hopeful truth.

Yes, the film has garnered some attention due to it taking on the subject of a young girl who was raped and murdered and how that affected the town she was from, while balancing racism, and bigotry – but the film is about way more than that.

Visually, the film transforms the fictional town of Ebbing into a town so vivid it is almost real.

Cinematographer Ben Davis gives the town a very claustrophobic yet charming feel, ensuring that camera movement and frames that are minimal yet emotionally striking. In a strikingly beautiful scene between Mildred and a deer, all elements merge together in a heartbreaking symphony of sound and image.

This is the epitome of what Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missori is all about.

This is not a film about the technicalities, nor about the spectacle of cinema – it is a film about human nature, about characters, about society, life’s hardships, and how people reel with anguish over loss, unfairness and the resistance to change.

Featuring some of the most powerful performances of 2017, Three Billboards brings together an Oscar-worthy ensemble that deserves every bit of praise they are receiving.

Francis McDormand takes on an almost John Wayne-esque role as the grieving mother without regret who decides to take on and test the very fabric of Ebbing, Missouri. “She is more in the tradition of the Spaghetti Western’s mystery man, who comes walking down the center of the street, guns drawn, and blows everybody away,” said McDormand when talking about how she took on the role of Mildred.

It’s rare when films of this nature come around and when they do they grant the audience with a cathartic experience that challenge the viewer and leads to potential discourse about hate, intolerance, and the true meaning of humanity.… Expand

Actually, most of the performances are excellent. Also, the movie goes in a lot of unexpected and fantastic ways that I didn’t expect. Definitely a highlight of 2017.… Expand

The Flannery O'Connor comparisons are apt. Filled with both the best and worst of human nature and brilliant wit. Tremendously well written. Angry, stark, ultimately hopeful with one sentimental slight of hand.

3 billboards I was very interested in the movie went very well I actually admired the most favorite event scenario about this movie in one word is quite intelligent and unusual scenario that the movie is so beautifully combined with the name of movie that it is not not to be not admirable.

the acting are not only the leading actors but they have already proven themselves in the oscard I have admired the acting roles of the side roles so everyone has done the work very well that we have to thank everyone passing through in this movie.

I think that the oscar winner should be the ladybird before I watch this movie but I can not decide right now I appreciate both of you equally great movie thanks.… Expand

The performances in this movie are great, and I would like to single out Sam Rockwell and of course, Frances McDormand for giving this film the necessary acting chops. Truly, their performances are one of a kind. One of their bests. Woody Harrelson was also great, although he left the screen early. The story was well-written, despite numerous plot holes. The dialogue, however, if not superb, was amazing, at best. The cinematography is also a bonus. Truly one of the greatest films of the year 2017.… Expand

Awesome movie, it has been a long time since I have been thinking of the movie for weeks, definitely recommend it, specially if you are bored of the cringe repetitive marvel blockbusters like I am
