I don't want everyone to understand this movie, because it almost feels like a treat when you figure it all out. I barely have anything to complain about when it comes this Oscar-nominated movie. Period.

The Ebbing Redemption When I saw the reactions to this movie the score, I was like man this is the one, finally after a long time here is a perfect movie to enjoy. Especially it is a movie from Martin McDonagh who brought us In Bruges which I couldn't stop watching it over and over for a while, and Frances McDormand? God this is going to be gooood, so I got the movie, scenes passing one by one, the acting was great the music was great the shots was great as I expect it, but the story was going the wrong way. I couldn't believe things were going on in ebbing, out of nowhere everyone become such a goodie-goodie. Oh my god, the movie lost everything even really good acting specially by McDormand and Rockwell was lost. I couldn't believe them anymore. I think McDonagh wasn't even there when they made this or he was but he was dead drunk the whole time. Come on people look at Ebbing and learn how to erase hate from your hearts, come on people look at this poor old lady who suffered so much of her daughters death and she is the only one who cares, so she decided to become Rambo and waste everyone, but suddenly by that stupid fire scene she decided not to and become a good person and start loving people more. Dixon, the stupid racist looser cop who happen to be gay too, in a matter of seconds just by reading that letter find the way of becoming a better person and a good detective and the only thing he has to do is to sit in a bar and wait for the killer to come and sit near him and confess, after that he have to become Wolverine and take DNA sample in the stupidest way possible or should i say not possible. Woody Harrelson character kill himself so not to ruins everything up like every other character in this movie, I think all the characters should have done the same. I am shocked by foolishness in writing, lots of holes in script, what was that little gay doing in this movie? Is he here just because he is friend with director? Why all the hot girls must be stupid? Why the night they were on a date in that restaurant her x-husband should be there to? Why... Don't waste your time on this movie like I did instead go and watch In Bruges again or Olive Kitteridge just to see what are this people in this stupid movie capable of.… Expand

McDormand gives easily the best performance of the year for an actress and there are certainly good parts in the movie but the parts are far greater than the whole. It's a good movie, but nothing out of the ordinary in my opinion. I think McDonagh did a better job in In Bruges and in 7 Psychopaths. The film presents an excellent performance by Sam Rockwell and some good from Frances McDormand and WoodyIt's a good movie, but nothing out of the ordinary in my opinion. None of the characters are believable or likeable and within about 20 minutes I was groaning at all the actions and dialogue. Really atrocious, so shocking as I was expecting a great movie from all the buzz and praise this movie was getting. Some parts, like the voice over of one of the characters reading letters made me wonder how they convinced this actor to read these lines at all. Baffling!… Expand

A captivating fusion of great script-writing and great acting: I loved Mildred’s (McDormand’s) wit and boldness. The representation of women in this film is definitely contrary to stereotypes- Mildred is a **** lady and ‘Momma’ Dixon isA captivating fusion of great script-writing and great acting: I loved Mildred’s (McDormand’s) wit and boldness. The representation of women in this film is definitely contrary to stereotypes- Mildred is a **** lady and ‘Momma’ Dixon is anything but a doting mother. The film seemed to seamlessly switch between drama, comedy, dark comedy. Dixon, the emasculated, simple, racist policeman is the perfect respite from what could have been a wholly dark (and dull) storyline. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into this film- the choices of music e.g. 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' playing while Dixon listens in to the potential rapist and murderer of Angela.

One of my favourite scenes is of Dixon reading Willoughby's letter in the police station, while Mildred is firing molotov cocktails at him from the opposite building. The scene is so surreal and absurd, and good and bad seem to no longer be useful categorisations. The characters are trapped in a cycle of efforts to change things, which backfire and prove futile.

I found it sort of cute how in Willoughby's letter to his wife he says 'I know they were cheating' about his daughters; even in his state of mind, his humour remains. Willoughby's character is really amiable- even when Mildred shows no compassion when he tells her he has cancer, he can take her perspective, and even pays for the billboards for the next month. Mildred's confrontation with the pastor is half expected but the confidence and certitude with which she speaks (as well as her arguments) was a pleasure to watch. However Mildred hasn't considered the cost to her son, of this ferocious search for the truth behind her daughter's rape and murder. The characters’ actions bring about the opposite of what they intend, and attempts to right wrongs are doomed to failure. The humour twists into irony.

I think what makes this film so special is how the very dark subject matter of a teenage girl's rape and murder (Mildred's daughter) brings to the fore the dysfunction lying within almost all the characters, and underlying the situation. Nothing is sugar-coated: I found it realistic how Charlie (Mildred’s ex) is at one moment about to choke her to death, and then calm resumes when the two parents empathise with one another over the loss of Angela. The audience can see how these two people at some point in life were compatible- both being witty if anything. The characters are tangled in a set-up which is impossible to escape. No matter what they say or what they do, they cannot make a difference: They remain the toys of fate.… Expand

There is some excellent acting from McDormand, Rockwell and Harrelson and the supporting actors seems very natural in their roles. But the story just doesn't pay off in terms of the tension it builds up and personally, while I could empathize with a mother losing her daughter in the worst circumstances possible, it is so much more difficult to end up with two people contemplating justified (((murder))).
If nothing else, watch it for the acting which will probably rope in a few good awards in the eventual run.… Expand

awwww man, the first half was amazing but the second half.... well i could barely watch it. way to squander what was a great idea. That coupled with the 1 dimensional rendering of the redneck racists and stupid cops just left a bad taste in the mouth. Also cheesy voiceovers from dead people... no thanks.

I think the deer scene was the moment for me when this one jumped the shark. If you're going to have CGI in your movie, it better be absolutely flawless. If it looks like a badly lit cut out or a glitchy render then you have shattered the illusion of reality and every minor flaw becomes magnified in scrutiny.… Expand

I really enjoyed the first half of the movie, especially the parts with Woody Harrelson. Francis McDormand also did great. The ending is a bit disappointing as I wish there was justice for her murdered daughter. I loved all the suspenseful scenes but I felt like they tried to create too many relationships. After Harrelson's character died, I felt like the movie slowed down a bit but overall the movie good, but not amazing. Overall, I would give it a 8.0.… Expand

Surprisingly, the music is amazing in it, all the tracks are perfect and encourages each and every scene especially when the billboards are burned down, there are couple other scenes too but don't wanna spoil it. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has the perfect balance of character driven movie and script driven movie and addition to this, an unpredictable one. Martin McDonagh; the writer-director, brings out something new in this genre that has never been witnessed, he plays with his characters and tracks like he is juggling and even his short characters too will make you feel for them (Peter Dinklage and Caleb Landry Jones) which shows the range of the characters and the actors. Frances McDormand oozes power like never before; she is brutal, arrogant, sometimes wrong and surprisingly funny. Woody Harrelson is straight out stunning in it but the real trump card is Sam Rockwell; he almost has a parallel role to Frances and he justifies his presence till the last frame. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri stands out alone in its genre for its unpredictable script, brutal characters and amusing conversations.… Expand

This film is supposed to be darkly comic, apparently. I just thought it was funny. Sure, the presentation was a bit more gritty than in your average comedy, but I felt it was still a film made for laughs.

As with all the best comedies, the plot was as basic as it gets. But who needs a plot when you’ve got laughs. And there were plenty of twists and turns too. Things happened that even the savviest audience member wouldn’t have seen coming. Some of these unexpected moments demonstrated a braveness on the part of the film makers – writing out a major character halfway through the film.

Of the three main leads (Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell) it’s hard to say who takes the crown for best performance. McDormand’s character was an instant audience favourite, but I felt Rockwell owned the film. His portray of a confused thug seeing the error of his ways and becoming the remorseful anti-hero, undercut the witty dialogue and gave the film a real reason for being.

It’s always good to go into a film being slightly weary of the hype, and then almost instantly understanding what all the fuss was about. Time and possible awards (though the latter is not a measure of something’s worth) will see the greatness of Three Billboards only increase. Bravo to all concerned.… Expand

Following my viewing of the Golden Globes, and more recently, the SAG awards, I decided that watching Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would most likely be a good idea. The film has performed exceptionally well so far this awardsFollowing my viewing of the Golden Globes, and more recently, the SAG awards, I decided that watching Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would most likely be a good idea. The film has performed exceptionally well so far this awards season, consistently winning many of the awards it was put up for. After being fortunate enough to see it, I can understand why.

I feel it is worth quickly adding that, while watching this film, I was quite tired. I’d seen Coco earlier that same day, and I rarely go out for that long a period. The fact that the film still made such an impact on me in that state is impressive.

Ordinarily, this isn’t the sort of film I’d be attracted to. I didn’t really recognise many of the actors going in, nor was it based on an existing property. To put it bluntly, it was a proper, standalone film. After seeing it, I was genuinely impressed.

Ordinarily, I would list highlights of a film, then delve into the issues. Now, however, I’m perplexed; the film did everything well, at least to an extent. There was only a few things I found issue with. The CGI (which was used incredibly sparingly) was often rather jarring. It didn’t fit with the rest of the gorgeously shot world. Though the locations are never astounding, Ben Davis makes even relatively mundane countryside look beautiful.

The characters shown within this film are rather fascinating. The events leading up to the film could almost be a film in themselves. Despite what reading a synopsis may imply, however, this film isn’t a murder mystery. The murder of Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand)’s daughter isn’t the focal point of the film. Instead, the main focus of the film is how the event impacts various people, and how they go on to deal with it. Each main character is rather layered, and could arguably be the lead in their own film.

Bringing these characters to life is a brilliantly talented cast. Frances McDormand deserves each award she receives. I feel the trailer actually does her character a disservice; after watching it, I felt that she was simply a vulgar, hateful woman taking her frustrations out on those around her. In reality, she’s a far more sympathetic character, who isn’t nearly as abrasive as the trailer makes her out to be. Woody Harrelson’s Chief Willoughby was probably my favourite character of the film, who, despite playing the straight man in many scenes, is able to bring levity and humour to the dark situations in which he finds himself. Sam Rockwell’s Dixon is also wonderful, though many people have taken issue with his character’s arc. Personally, I enjoyed it greatly, though it’s something to note.

Many of the supporting characters are hit or miss. I feel Peter Dinklage was brilliantly funny, though some of the others failed to steal a chuckle from me. The rest of the audience seemed to enjoy them, however, so it’s most likely a fault of my own.

I was pleasantly surprised by how violent this film is; the trailer makes it seem that violence is a punchline to a joke, but at times, the movie is genuinely brutal. It’s probably more violent than most modern horror films.

The soundtrack was actually rather enjoyable. The original scoring was great, and fit the setting perfectly. The other songs added each served their purpose, oftentimes accentuating the comedy within a scene.

For the most part, I found the writing great. The characters spoke like real (if dramatised) people, though occasionally there was some odd lines.

To conclude the review, I feel this was a truly impressive film, and I understand why it’s getting so many nominations. If you love film, I must recommend you give this one a watch. Thankfully, this isn’t one you need to see in the cinema; I think it could work just as well on a smaller screen. If you need a concrete ending, however, you may need to steer clear; it’s rather open ended. I feel Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri deserves a 9/10, and I look forward to seeing more films of a similar quality to this one.… Expand

For example, there is a scene where a teenager at a school throws a soda on the Frances McDormand character's car, and the way she handles it would never happen in real life, and there were no consequences for her actions. In fact, she does several outrageous things without any consequences. There are other unbelievable outrageous moments that I won't go into. Other times the quirkiness works, so it's a mixed bag for me. This movie is definitely not a visitor's guide for the state of Missouri as most of the town are portrayed as bigots, including the police force. The acting was stellar throughout. Frances McDormand gives a powerful performance, rivaling that of her Oscar winning role in 'Fargo'. She plays a grieving mother with the guts of John Wayne and power of a mother's rage. Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson also give strong supporting turns, but are somewhat overshadowed by the gravity of McDormand performance. I am a guy, I don't like emotional movies, but this movie had my eyes drawn to the screen and wanted to cry and laugh and be engaged at EVERY scene. Key word, EVERY...such great storywriting to accomplish that. HOWEVER, only a 9/10 because I thought the choice to not make the suspect the actual rapist was a miss in the storywriting. I thought this crazy story needed some closure, and to leave it hanging when they had the lay up so perfectly was a huge emotional miss and then to cut the last scene off just as it was ramping up to something very interesting was also a let down. Let's face it people don't change their views that quickly, but this film wants its cake and eat it and ends up feeling somewhat patronising. Even the most despicable **** -- people that you want with all your heart to hate -- are given a supurb level of depth and development; in addition to this, the close-quarters small town setting gives an unsettling intimacy to the vitriolic and sometimes outrageously violent events of this film. Some people have expressed concerns over this movie's inconsistent tone. Honestly, I feel that the level of lightheartedness and comedy that this movie hangs onto balances pretty perfectly with the more prominent, painful, emotional aspects. It's part of what makes this movie so interesting (and enjoyable) for me. I'm sad that this didn't resonate as well with other people. The performances are all fantastic and commendable in their own right, (especially from Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell) and you should watch it if you can. If nothing else, I promise you'll be thinking about it for a little while after you've left the theater.… Expand

The film manages a very interesting comedy, for example, Carter Burwell puts a slow music to put you in a sad mood and make you feel for the characters and suddenly... you laugh. THIS MOVIE! One for the books. Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell kill it. I've never seen a flawless performance by both of them. Woody Harrelson deserves many awards for that breathtaking display of Bill Willoughby. My favorite part is theTHIS MOVIE! One for the books. Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell kill it. How come, Chief Willoughby?” This causes mass outrage from an entire town of colourful characters who adore chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) including a “fat dentist”, a “lady with the funny eye” and Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell) a man who recently built a reputation for himself after beating up a black suspect. Or as Mildred colourfully puts it, Dixon has recently entered “the n***er torturing business”. Is she in the right to put up the billboards? Is she helping draw attention on her daughter's murder case? Or is she just a rude woman who should stop fighting people she shouldn’t consider her enemies? Who knows, but she’s doing it anyway. And in a strange way when I watched her stand up against everyone in the entire town I was reminded a little of Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Just like Atticus she knows she’s fighting a losing battle and that no matter what she does she will never be able to bring her daughter back. She also knows that it’s unlikely that her daughter's killer will ever be found. But none of that matters because this is just something that she believes is the right thing to do. McDonagh’s previous films (Seven Psychopaths and In Bruges) have always been strong at balancing dark humour with thought provoking drama. But unlike his other work, the comedy for the most part is much more nuanced, with more subtle performances and a stronger focus on character development. Though it does still have his distinct language which constantly strives to challenge Goodfellas and South Park for the most swear words per minute of screen time. Plus he’s assembled an incredible ensemble cast, all of whom know just how to deliver McDonaghs dialogue and are all memorable in their own way.

But the two standouts in the cast are definitely McDormand and Rockwell. It’s kind of surprising seeing McDormand play a role whose personality is so polar opposite to Margo in Fargo. Whenever she’s on screen she’s such a dominating figure and has a brashness to say whatever she wants, no matter how reckless it is or how much harm it causes. She’s also brilliant at delivering McDonagh’s language. At the end of it I was pretty sure that I’d enjoy watching an entire film of McDormand just going around town and swearing at people (which to be fair is kind of what I saw). This film might also be Rockwell’s greatest performance yet. He’s the image of the cop that Americans fear to see. The kind who thinks that his badge is an excuse to do whatever he wants and not have to face any consequences for it. He does so many hateful and despicable things in the film, but somehow Rockwell never lets you lose all hope for him. You always feel like he’s going to do the right thing in the end, even if he’s going to do a lot of wrong things first. At times hilarious, at others sorrowful and constantly thought provoking, Three Billboards is easily McDonagh’s greatest work. It’s a film that has a certain level of humanity and moral ambiguity that will continue to resonate long after you’ve watched it.… Expand

Well this is it, my last film of 2017.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the best closing film I could have asked for. An intelligent and interesting story that manages to combine a good drama with elements of black comedy thatWell this is it, my last film of 2017.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the best closing film I could have asked for. An intelligent and interesting story that manages to combine a good drama with elements of black comedy that although provide some relief, never make you lose sight of the rawness of the story that is narrating.

Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell deliver very good performances, especially McDormand who gives a strength and fierceness to her character that makes her at the same time admirable and resolute.

I admit that the movie has certain pauses of rhythm that can feel weird but in reality they don't affect the general performance of the story or the characters. The film is solid and remains so until the ending, which although it's ambiguous and does not really solve anything, as a spectator I didn't feel disappointed, because as it happens many times in real life with similar cases like the one that drives this film, it's that unfortunately, sometimes we don't get justice or answers. It's not nice but that's life. If you haven't seen it, do it.… Expand

All the acting deserving of many awards and top notch from all the personnel involved. For people here saying that elements were fantastical, wouldn't ever happen in reality---look at "No Country for Old Men" for the model please, and please watch better than your American lowest common denominator fare before you ever judge this. Only the open ended and unresolved nature of the ending threw me for a major curve, and could've perhaps been handled differently . But perhaps that's the point---that many problems in life are never ever resolved. And, I love the complex portrayal of law enforcement and how Rockwell's character changes due to circumstances over time---since I don't really believe that all of law enforcement are dullards, but complex people with much intelligence and families to care for. And, it IS a taxing occupation. Much thanks for this jewel in the season of Star Wars and superhero fluff this year!… Expand

A few days later he is hanging out in bars. Full of incongruent moments. Peter Dinklage as a gimmick character who is totally pointless to the plot or movie. Not as clever or as funny or as tragic or as real as it thinks it is. Lazy screenwriting, same old director tricks from his other movies. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, there is a reason everyone is talking about this film and it's definitely not one to be missed.

You don’t need me to set the story up, the trailer did that just fine, Mildred's daughter has been murdered and months later the police have nothing to show for it so in an attempt to get some movement on the case and throw it back into the spotlight she rents three billboards with a powerful message to the police. It’s easy to tell when you’re watching a terrific film and from the beginning Three Billboards grips you and doesn’t let go once. Who doesn't love a bit of dark humour? Martin McDonagh has found the balance between comedy and tragedy, such a morbid topic handled to perfection. A movie that cares about its characters, keeps the story unpredictable and honestly what more do I need to say to convince you? McDormand is exceptional, perfectly capturing the pure rage of a grieving mother. Sam Rockwell has the best character development I've seen in a film this year, giving an Oscar worthy performance. I cannot recommend this highly enough, I loved every minute of it, I'm dying to see it again and I urge you all to see it, no exceptions.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Went to see Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and I am COMPLETELY baffled by the critical acclaim for this film. What am I missing here? The film is an utter mess.

The movie is about a mother who seeks to find answers to her daughter's murder by placing three billboards up that demand the local chief of police for answers. The problem there is, the billboards lead only down a country road that hardly anyone drives, so I don't understand why there's such a fuss. When the news stumbles across the billboards and makes it top story on the 6pm news, all hell breaks loose.

The film is filled with too many characters that any one character cannot be fleshed out enough to have any kind of sympathy for them. There are characters in the film, like Peter Dinklage's "James," who just appear to be convenience plot breaks and do nothing, really, to help the plot. And there are characters and situations in the film that are so ultra-violent that you wonder why there weren't arrests made (for example, one scene involves a man who throws another man out of a second floor window in broad daylight, yet he was not arrested for it).

In one scene, the billboards are set ablaze, and the lead character just pulls out this massive fire extinguisher in her car - as if everyone drives with one. In another scene, one supporting character is burned very badly and ends up in the hospital - in the exact same room as the guy whom he threw out of the window! That character, in the very next scene, ends up in a bar - wait, wasn't he just all bandaged up and in the hospital? - and just happens to be there at exactly the same time as someone whom he thinks is admitting something that could possibly end the whole case. The whole movie is just preposterous. It's also very racist, homophobic, misogynist, and ultra violent.

I also do not see how it could be considered a comedy, with heavy topics as rape, murder, suicide, revenge, and the above mentioned racism, homophobia, and misogyny.

WHY is this movie getting critical acclaim???

Is the acting good? Sure - but when isn't Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Lucas Hedges, Caleb Jones, John Hawkes, and Peter Dinklage good? It's not their faults. It's the script that is a mess - from the beginning to the end.

UGH! I really wanted to like this movie. I didn't like much of it at all. I'm giving it a generous 4/10 - I really want to know WHY critics and audiences are liking this movie. There isn't really much to redeem it.… Expand

Much credit goes to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Its analysis on a small town’s skewed priorities on law and order feels inspired by the United States’ many cultures, especially from the perspective of Mildred, played by Oscar winner Frances McDormand (Fargo). She never says a single kind word to anyone, but her true personality blooms once she routinely plants flowers in front of her blood-red billboards as if at the Vietnam memorial. Once there, she shares a melodic conversation with a deer beside the highway, keeping her human. The rest of Ebbing, Missouri also seems given up on America’s growth, set instead to let desires run on dunking others beneath self-worth.

Though be warned: the three steps to the feature’s creation appears a tad too rushed. The pre-production process mentions the Catholic church of the town exactly once in the first act, missing out on its powerful potential to serve a stronger MacGuffin to the story beyond just its hindrance to society. The production process’s cheap burn makeup effects look poor compared to the wounds put on Leonardo DiCaprio’s bear wounds. The post-production process disrupts its own narrative flow by throwing a flashback into a moment when dialogue would have sufficed.

Looking at the Oscar’s past Best Picture winners, Spotlight and Moonlight, they both kept a consistent visual style, unlike Three Billboards. Primarily, the editor, Jon Gregory (Four Weddings and a Funeral, In Bruges) was a poor choice to put together the feature; a potential Oscar contender ought to require someone more experienced to present a population of human beings turned into thoughtless advertisements. Likewise, cinematographer Ben Davis (Guardians of the Galaxy) resorts to unnecessarily pointing the Steadicam upwards. If treated like a mockumentary similar to This Is Spinal Tap, then a greater impact could linger in this movie’s legacy.

Now with the problems out of the way, basically everything else in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri accomplishes its civic duty.

Obviously, cops nowadays are no State Farm, so here their portrayal gets treated positively. Mildred’s middle-class family home in particular takes no breather: her ex-husband continues to abuse her while her last shared memory with her murdered daughter reeks in high regret. Maybe the people here were born with it, maybe the pressure to advertise caused everyone to become whatever social message they always talk about. Its timelessness in leaving the precise year vague adds the extra snap, crackle, and pop to the core theme.

My commemorations go to the finger lickin’ good performances by the whole cast, every single one proves the power of an ensemble, particularly the underrated actor Caleb Landry Jones (Breaking Bad, Get Out). Yet Sam Rockwell in particular is after an Academy Award nomination, and understandably so: his performance turns agitated one minute and collapsing in silent tears the next.

I appreciate how Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri knew not to excessively milk its timeliness right after it calls the cops a **** Torturing Business,” since they lack concentration on actual crimes. Although these cops prefer the equally undignified term “Persons of Color;” even they the authorities think Black people fall short against “normal” White people. This mouth-gaping social relevance soon turns ironic once a new Black police sheriff comes into town.

Beyond the Blacks/Police conflict that challenges old stereotypes, jokes about people’s weight and height keep going and going and going without crossing the line towards the offensive. The head of Ebbing’s P.R. business even has the name Red, because everyone else around him sees red—both literally and figuratively!

It’s a greatly clever style of writing which helps you to think different in a harsh way. We all want and need to preach about what makes us pound our fist on the table, and as depicted here, our abuse of our First Amendment rights turns us into our branding, erasing the definition between our wants and our needs. It really boils down to: Where do you want to go today?… Expand

Great performances by McDormand, Harrelson and Sam Rockwell (who plays a violent **** of a cop). Abbie Cornish miscast as Harrelson's wife. (She was way too young and watching them have sex was creepy). Near the end a character says, "Anger begets anger" and this isn't a life lesson for us or even an overarching theme. However, in my opinion, the always fantastic Sam Rockwell has a more difficult character to portray, necessitating greater nuance and range.

The amount of effusive praise being heaped on the film would likely lead one to believe that this is McDonagh’s best film yet. However, I personally rank it third amongst McDonagh’s three features, behind 2008’s ‘In Bruges’ and 2012’s ‘Seven Psychopaths,’ largely due to a couple of poor casting decisions and unusual plot devices.… Expand

The film is listed as a crime comedy but there is not much of a comedy here, it is mostly a dark drama with some sad humor. The protagonist Mildred is played by Frances McDormand, famous for her role in "Fargo" and many other movies.

Her performance is stellar, and in general I would commend on the whole cast's acting.

The script is the only component in the movie that is, in my opinion, not great.

Overall it is an excellent movie that I am sure I will want to see again.… Expand

Superlatives : the acting of Frances McDormand is superlative and Oscar worthy and the performances of Woody and Sam Rockwell were equally excellent. One or two will get a nomination. The plot was original and creative and the dialogue was equally creative. On the negative side , the vulgarity is gratuitive, unrealistic and ineffective. That same creative plot was inconsistent. The film lacked subtlety and the rural Missourians were were portrayed as hicks and dumb wits. The longer the movie played, the more unrealistic Frances' actions became. Billboards; yes. Bombing police station;not likely. This could have been another Fargo with better direction… Expand

This movie pulls you emotional in so many directions, that you do not know whether to cry or laugh, get pissed off or clap your hands. While Frances McDormand is truly the star of this movie, and she deserves so much praise, it is both Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson that really shine bigger than life for their roles in this film. They have grown so much as actors over the years from comedic roles to this shows me their range and talent. I also have to give major props to Writer/ Director Martin McDonagh who gave life to this film by giving us some levity in between the tragic elements of the story. There is some serious deep stuff thrown at the movie goer, but letting us smile and laugh at such characters as Momma Dixon, (Sandy Martin), Frances's ex-husband, (John Hawke) and his young innocent girlfriend, (Samara Weaving) was the cornerstone of what makes this movie great. Even the subplots of Peter Dinklage's character, Kerry Condon who plays the sheriff's wife, and Abbie Cornish' marketing/ad guy let us feel so much in their scenes is a mark of truly brilliant storytelling. The director really made his actors' performances come to life, and as a movie goer, I am glad I choose to see it.

In closing, I do not give movies a 10 score. This is as close to a 10 as I will recognize. There is always room for improvement, so to give it a perfect score means that perfection was achieved. That no one can top it and never will is just not my thinking. So I leave a little space for more. 9.49 is where I am at. Great and memorable, but not legendary.… Expand

Walking into “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” you expect to be wowed by Frances McDormand not only by the word of mouth but just by taking one look at the movie trailer and you are not disappointed. Mildred Hayes is a hard, sassy talking, take no bull from anyone, headstrong woman who doesn’t give an inch and gets laughs just by the way she delivers a zinger. Her daughter had been raped, killed and burned alive 7 months before and the case seems to be cold and she won’t stand for it.

She rents 3 billboards on a very seldom driven road stating 1) RAPED WHILE DYING 2) AND STILL NO ARRESTS and 3) HOW COME, CHIEF WILLOUGHBY? Along with everything else Mildred has the guilt of the last words saying to her daughter, “I Hope you do get raped!” in anger and frustration with her. As horrible as that sounds you are on her side no matter what she does and says and you never know what that will be!

As good as McDormand is, and she is good, Woody Harrelson, as Chief Willoughby, matches her anger, frustration with the absence of leads and not being able to help the woman though they are alike in many ways. He has problems of his own to face and there is a 2-3 minute scene between him and his wife Anne, played by Abbie Cornish, showing what love is all about. He also, obviously, loves his 2 daughters.

Giving Harrelson and McDormand a run for best performance in this movie is saying a lot and Sam Rockwell as a dim-witted, racist, violent police officer does just that. Caleb Landry Jones as the advertiser who rents the billboards to Mildred is fierce though seems to be a bit too young for the role. John Hawks, as Mildred’s wife beating ex-husband Charlie and his new 19 year old girlfriend Samara Weaving are just two of the townspeople against her and the billboards. Lucas Hedges, as the son of Mildred and Charlie, definitely his mother’s son, Clarke Peters is a new police chief while Peter Dinklage is a car dealer who gives Mildred an alibi when she needs one and Sandy Martin as Rockwell’s mother all add to the movie.

This is a deep movie in spite of the foul language and the many laughs from situations, but it has many dark moments, a lot of violence, resolved and unresolved relationships and though all the characters are frayed in one way or another you come to care for them because of the screenplay and direction by Martin McDonagh.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”, aside from its cumbersome title, will be mentioned in many categories during award time and is a must see.… Expand

Very well made and well acted, but I will be honest and say that I felt it to be a bit overhyped, due in part to my high expectations upon hearing about the raves this film has been receiving. Frances McDormand was wonderful as always, as was the supporting cast, with the likes of Woody Harrelson and the highly underrated Sam Rockwell in what I'd consider his best performance yet. The film and its story felt like all too familiar territory to me at times, and the ending was a bit anticlimactic for my liking, but it still had plenty of funny and memorable moments to at least keep it worthwhile for the most part. Overall, it's not amazing like what I've been hearing about it, but it contains solid work from its reliable cast and an interesting story that keeps it entertaining and amusing enough throughout. It's also worth noting that fans of director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths) will likely find much to enjoy and admire about the dark humor in this that he's become so well known for.… Expand

Out of all the films I've seen at LIFF, this is easily my favorite and a great way to end this years festival. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is dark, funny, heart-felt, and a breath of fresh air. Never slowing down or drag on. It's plays around with genres and has a lot to say, politically or truth.

This is the best I've seen from Frances McDormand, which isn't new because it's McDormand. She delivered a performance that will get her another nomination (or win) at the Oscars. You can feel her pain and hate, but also see a softer side to her character which makes you have sympathy for Mildred.

Sam Rockwell, on the other hand, gives one of his finest performance of the film. The character Dixon is short-tempered and not very bright. What stops him from being unlikeable is Rockwell charm and honesty. Dixon has a tremendous arc of learning to care about others rather then just being angry.

Caleb Landry Jones, John Hawkes, Woody Harrelson, and Peter Dinklage were all superb. All of them having brilliant moments in whatever screen time they have. Not Lucas Hedges, I thought he was awful in this.

Martin McDonagh just keeps hitting the home runs through out his career. The script was the real show stealer here. The dialogue is so rich and masterful, it keeps you locked from start till finish. Cinematography, editing, and music are all top of the range.

What else can I say, I loved it every second of it.… Expand

Sam Rockwell plays one of the most dynamic characters I have ever seen on film, and Woody Harrelson both delights and pulls at our heartstrings. The rest of the cast is stupidly perfect, with amazing supporting performances from John Hawkes, Peter Dinklage, and Lucas Hedges among others. The script and story of Three Billboards is powerful, heartbreaking, and hilarious throughout the movie. McDonagh really nails the cycle of anger and pointless violence in the world, and the film smartly sidesteps all cliches and pitfalls of a movie of this genre and caliber. I won't spoil anything about the plot, as it is best experienced "going in blind" as they say, but in a year of strong movies, I think we have a clear frontrunner for Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture.… Expand

Heart breaking and hilarious at the same time. Excellent performances all around. I very rarely watch comedies because they're usually immature and stupid, but I loved this. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the best written movies of the year. Martin McDonagh proves again to be one of the best narrative storytellers alive. Not only is the movie's narrative written tightly, but throughout it explores the theme of how hatred and revenge bring people together, and not always in a virtuous way. Frances McDermott and Sam Rockwell deliver stunning performances and the direction makes the movie multi-dimensional in terms of energy and tone. McDonagh's adept writing could make you empathize with a serial killer. Bravo!… Expand

This is a well written and directed film by noted playwright Martin McDonagh as he guides the audience through the many complexities faced by each character in the story. This film, despite its 2 hour length, left this writer with disappointment that it ended and this is in no small part due to the perfect blending of fine acting, writing and directing resulting in a positive theatrical experience. I give an 8.0 rating with a suggestion that Ms. McDormand begin drafting her Oscar acceptance speech as soon as possible.… Expand

Easily one of my top 5 movies of the year (along with Columbus, LadyBird, and Wind River). The cast is incredible, to a person, but the clear star of the show is Frances McDormand, who lets it all hang out. Frances McDormand leads an incredible ensemble cast that delivers some of the year's best performances. McDormand is incredible, and undoubtedly gives her best performance since the Coen's Fargo. Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson both shine.

Three Billboards is angry, profane, yet heartfelt and beautiful. Tragedy, hope and redemption shines through, and makes it the film we really need today.… Expand
