Well this is it, my last film of 2017.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the best closing film I could have asked for. An intelligent and interesting story that manages to combine a good drama with elements of black comedy that although provide some relief, never make you lose sight of the rawness of the story that is narrating.

Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell deliver very good performances, especially McDormand who gives a strength and fierceness to her character that makes her at the same time admirable and resolute.

I admit that the movie has certain pauses of rhythm that can feel weird but in reality they don't affect the general performance of the story or the characters. The film is solid and remains so until the ending, which although it's ambiguous and does not really solve anything, as a spectator I didn't feel disappointed, because as it happens many times in real life with similar cases like the one that drives this film, it's that unfortunately, sometimes we don't get justice or answers. It's not nice but that's life. If you haven't seen it, do it.

The leading role is one of the strongest of the year, a woman who desperately seeks justice and revenge for her daughter´s death. The film reflects the many flaws of our society and leaves us thinking about the different possibilities and the many things in life we can do to take one direction or the opposite. Also, that very often, things are left unresolved and one has to live with it. Homophobia, racism, cruelty, hypocrisy, and many other sides of human beings are tackled here. And not one main character is left out of that. Especially interesting the arc for one of the police officer´s character, played by Sam Rockwell. Frances carries the film perfectly too as only she knows. It doesn´t feel like something especially new or artistic, but it wins us with its unpredictable nature and entertainment value. Expand

A game-changer. I have just witnessed one of the— narratively speaking —more intense feature films ever, one that, surprisingly, doesn't require Parisian landscapes or delicate photographs to be the most effortlessly acidic film offer in a very long time, one incorporating a really powerful drama and a delicious caustic black humor, putting you as a voyeur of the pain of others, a depraved buy purgative activity.

The leading role of " Fargo" wonderful actress Frances McDormand, which will surely lead her name to global media focus, she expels strength, even when her heart is broken into hundreds of pieces. This impetuosity is precisely the agent allowing an almost instantaneous connection from the first scene on the road, that imperfection, remorse and feeling, seeking vindication in such emotional ways that announces the establishment of a new Ellen Ripley, for indie-drama genre, her brave nature, supported on the grief of a mother, stirs up a sensational feeling from which the film drinks on several times to achieve an unbeatable narrative cadence. The second great discovery is underestimated-actor Sam Rockwell. Rockwell returns with a worthy-recognition role, a really big one, Dixon, an alcoholic sheriff who doesn't frequent good manners, an arrogant policeman who doesn't care to pass over the world to be victorious. Needless to say, this actor executes one of the most powerful moments of the film at the hands of his character. Last, but not least, is a not-remotely-unusual player, as most of his performances get to touch the overwhelming, the really overwhelming. Willoughby is a police chief who failed to fully resolve a murder and rape crime, moreover, he's outweighed by repercussions that cause the three billboards of the protagonist and a life-or-death decision, here a controversial debate rises up, to confront a dreaded fatal fate. A huge praise deserves some set-pieces pushing beyond the mettlesome narrative development. The film is rich in sequences that transmit by means of the pictures, and although it's almost impossible to avoid spoilers, it can be said that such strong points are distributed proportionately between the scenes where supporting and leading characters are involved in other words, between sequences that don't focus only on the bad-ass protagonist, even though, indirectly, all the moves lies on her. A mother, two local sheriffs, flames, explosions, love affairs, three billboards on deep-scarlet background and serious lettering, a surly dentist and a hired murderer are the ingredients used for the construction of a film which is based on its potent and articulated screenplay.

The score is brutal. From the start, I have considered musical accompaniments as key pieces for the success of transmission of emotions, of truth; A filmmaker must get to most possible resources to make sense of the specific and general purposes of the story, so I personally think that a simple melodic structure supports fabulous acting and creative task. Carter Burwell, who curiously had also worked with Mr. McDonagh in "Seven Psychopaths", has behind him gold scores of the stature of "Carol", "Anomalisa" and "Mr. Holmes"; Now, he reappears with full hands through compositions that are rightly coupled with the most heartfelt moments of the film, His score for this story express, on many occasions, more than pictures, because from masterful and harmonic sounds he transmits grief, tribulation, intractability and madness accompanying the characters, while potentiates his chances to opt for the coveted golden man. We will have to keep a close eye on this New Yorker, as he insinuates being the next monster producing excellent soundtracks for deep films thanks to his undeniable talent.

"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" written and directed by Martin McDonagh will make history in my review Watchlist as the first motion picture in which I didn't evaluate technical or visually artistic aspects, which clearly are executed in a beautiful, crude and stunning way, however, I haven't considered them as a fundamental part because this film is purely story and characters. I was skeptical about a true audiovisual production mustn't be made up of visual, narrative and creative art, however, this work has shown me that art can be conceived by putting some components a greater importance than others, but finally, they are all there. A blistering catharsis led by top-notch performances and a glorified direction, this film is the most human, poignant, shocking and coherent drama I have seen in a long time, a major achievement for cinematographic narrative that reveals the potential emergence of a feasible writing maestro, while it serves as a magnet to unite a hugely talented group of people who make the film what it is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a sad tale of a mother looking for answers about the rape and murder of her daughter. I really enjoyed the first half of the movie, especially the parts with Woody Harrelson. Francis McDormand also did great. The ending is a bit disappointing as I wish there was justice for her murdered daughter. I loved all the suspenseful scenes but I felt like they tried to create too many relationships. After Harrelson's character died, I felt like the movie slowed down a bit but overall the movie good, but not amazing. Overall, I would give it a 8.0. Expand

The actors where as perfect as perfect gets. The emotional scenes where just simply a masterpiece and they delivered the feelings of sorrow, love, vengeance and anger in such a meaningful and artistic way. The director's style and choice in cinematography is simply something Iv'e never seen before. Fresh and very well executed. The movie is such an entertaining piece and it keep the tension high all the way through with it's amazing unforeseen events and turns that it depicts the struggle of real life perfectly. The shadiness and lies and every single detail was outstandingly executed. The characters are just so perfectly written and acted and such complex personalities with profound moral codes that it is hard to even start to comprehend yet still believable, because it strongly reflects the reality to much. The emotional power this movie has is just amazing. The music also helped the impeccable immersion and tension. The situations our main characters are presented with and interacting with each other are often grotesque. But the humor and funny situations are very well delivered as well. I honestly had gags in one minute and tears in my eyes the other minute. It's literally like a lifeline of emotional overwhelming project. Overall it's an amazing movie which it's a must watch if you can stomach the drama genre. It was always a 10/10 masterpiece but the conclusion and ending was a bit lack luster which cut right before the apex of the events. None the less the message is clear and strong visiting true problems in the world. AMAZING!!!! Expand

Frances McDormand's Milded Hayes is a person whose anger and hatred towards the injustice done to her by the Police Department which failed to catch the rapist and murderer of her daughter, Angela, seems to lead her every move. Yet, do not expect to see the police as a villain here. In fact, Martin McDonagh does a staggering job at removing any evil representation of the Police Department even from the beginning of the film. And he does that through Woody Harrelson's Chief Willoughby who, despite being on cancer's Death Row, is actually the most empathetic and understanding of the characters. This really is a refreshing and long-awaited view on the classic "cops are corrupt, racist and evil".

Yet despite the surprisingly likable and respected Chief Willoughby, the anger found in almost all other characters is compelling them to do disturbing acts - Hayes putting the billboards up even though she knew Willoughby has cancer and Sam Rockwell's Officer Jason Dixon infamous rampage through a window and violently assaulting the man in charge of the billboards. But there is one more subtle take on this anger displaying, which is the message on the last billboard which claims 'raped while dying'. It is clear that Hayes wants everyone to be disturbed and shocked by the details of her daughter's last second, perhaps to make them feel the same suffering as she does.

So, while having a few abrupt tonal shifts, like a deep scene about a deer and reincarnation which, while powerful, felt a bit forced and rushed, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is a foul-mouthed sure-fire and efficient cry of inner peace with one of the best performances of the year, especially Sam Rockwell's troubled, childish and bizarre yet funny Officer Jason Dixon.

Starring: Frances McDormand. Woody Harrelson. Sam Rockwell. Directed by Michael McDonagh. 100/100. "Every great film should seem new every time you see it," said the late Roger Ebert, a film critic from the Chicago Sun-Times. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri" might be a difficult title to remember, but the movie will be unforgettable for audiences. This is a morbid comedy that will sting people with its banter and heartbreak. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is definitely a film that deserves Oscar recognition. Michael McDonagh has created an instant classic with an original plot and an excellent ensemble. In light of the pervasive profanity and violence, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is one of the most creative films this year. The story focuses on Mildred Hayes, a depressed mother who is portrayed exceptionally by the wonderful Frances McDormand, who avenges her daughter's murder by advertising the negligence of the local police department. McDonagh, screenwriter and director, writes the screenplay with sarcastic wit and touching unpredictability. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" should receive a nomination for the category of the best original screenplay. Furthermore, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" includes an awesome cast. Frances McDormand has a high chance of receiving an Oscar nomination this year. Woody Harrelson is superb as Chief Willoughby, a content sheriff in Ebbing. Sam Rockwell is a revelation as Deputy Jason Dixon, an acrimoniously racist, unsophisticated officer; Rockwell is magnificent at mixing humor and drama together in his performance. Viewers will witness portrayals from Peter Dinklage, Abbie Cornish, John Hawkes, etc. Audiences won't be disappointed by the movie, especially the actors and actresses involved. In conclusion, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is a film that is relevant to this era. If "Get Out" wins over this film in any category, I will laugh at a consistent rate; "Get Out" was marvelous, but it is incomparable to this movie. From the ravishing scenery to the uncertain finale, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is a portrait that captures society with purpose and provocation. Like the exemplary Roger Ebert said above, I have a feeling that Ebert would've loved "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri." Expand

Instead, we get little doses of criticism and commentary here and there, but with a larger spotlight shown on the complicated, non-binary mechanisms of human morality and behavior that operate in and around these facets of discussion. It's tremendously well-acted, with special marks going to Frances McDormand and the criminally underrated Sam Rockwell for absolutely killing it with their respective performances. She pays to have three billboards erected, asks the police chief, (Woody Harrelson) - Why? The billboards shake things up, trigger a strange, sometimes violent series of events. Mildred stands strong, is unapologetic despite backlash from the community. Her grief is unrelenting. It is another character, a whole weather system. It fills up the screen. Tchotchkes get smashed, Molotov cocktails get thrown, loyalties change, but this is not your typical revenge movie. Great performances by McDormand, Harrelson and Sam Rockwell (who plays a violent **** of a cop). Abbie Cornish miscast as Harrelson's wife. (She was way too young and watching them have sex was creepy). Near the end a character says, "Anger begets anger" and this isn't a life lesson for us or even an overarching theme. There are no lessons and this made me like the movie even more. It was fresh, unpredictable, dark and at times, really really funny. Expand

Much credit goes to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Its analysis on a small town’s skewed priorities on law and order feels inspired by the United States’ many cultures, especially from the perspective of Mildred, played by OscarMuch credit goes to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Its analysis on a small town’s skewed priorities on law and order feels inspired by the United States’ many cultures, especially from the perspective of Mildred, played by Oscar winner Frances McDormand (Fargo). She never says a single kind word to anyone, but her true personality blooms once she routinely plants flowers in front of her blood-red billboards as if at the Vietnam memorial. Once there, she shares a melodic conversation with a deer beside the highway, keeping her human. The rest of Ebbing, Missouri also seems given up on America’s growth, set instead to let desires run on dunking others beneath self-worth.

Though be warned: the three steps to the feature’s creation appears a tad too rushed. The pre-production process mentions the Catholic church of the town exactly once in the first act, missing out on its powerful potential to serve a stronger MacGuffin to the story beyond just its hindrance to society. The production process’s cheap burn makeup effects look poor compared to the wounds put on Leonardo DiCaprio’s bear wounds. The post-production process disrupts its own narrative flow by throwing a flashback into a moment when dialogue would have sufficed.

Looking at the Oscar’s past Best Picture winners, Spotlight and Moonlight, they both kept a consistent visual style, unlike Three Billboards. Primarily, the editor, Jon Gregory (Four Weddings and a Funeral, In Bruges) was a poor choice to put together the feature; a potential Oscar contender ought to require someone more experienced to present a population of human beings turned into thoughtless advertisements. Likewise, cinematographer Ben Davis (Guardians of the Galaxy) resorts to unnecessarily pointing the Steadicam upwards. If treated like a mockumentary similar to This Is Spinal Tap, then a greater impact could linger in this movie’s legacy.

Now with the problems out of the way, basically everything else in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri accomplishes its civic duty.

Obviously, cops nowadays are no State Farm, so here their portrayal gets treated positively. Mildred’s middle-class family home in particular takes no breather: her ex-husband continues to abuse her while her last shared memory with her murdered daughter reeks in high regret. Maybe the people here were born with it, maybe the pressure to advertise caused everyone to become whatever social message they always talk about. Its timelessness in leaving the precise year vague adds the extra snap, crackle, and pop to the core theme.

My commemorations go to the finger lickin’ good performances by the whole cast, every single one proves the power of an ensemble, particularly the underrated actor Caleb Landry Jones (Breaking Bad, Get Out). Yet Sam Rockwell in particular is after an Academy Award nomination, and understandably so: his performance turns agitated one minute and collapsing in silent tears the next.

I appreciate how Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri knew not to excessively milk its timeliness right after it calls the cops a **** Torturing Business,” since they lack concentration on actual crimes. Although these cops prefer the equally undignified term “Persons of Color;” even they the authorities think Black people fall short against “normal” White people. This mouth-gaping social relevance soon turns ironic once a new Black police sheriff comes into town.

Beyond the Blacks/Police conflict that challenges old stereotypes, jokes about people’s weight and height keep going and going and going without crossing the line towards the offensive. The head of Ebbing’s P.R. business even has the name Red, because everyone else around him sees red—both literally and figuratively!

It’s a greatly clever style of writing which helps you to think different in a harsh way. We all want and need to preach about what makes us pound our fist on the table, and as depicted here, our abuse of our First Amendment rights turns us into our branding, erasing the definition between our wants and our needs. It really boils down to: Where do you want to go today?

Seven months after her daughter was murdered, and with no culprit arrested, Mildred Hayes puts up three billboards with a message aimed at the chief of police William Willoughby causing conflict across the town.

Francis McDormand, who seemingly never disappoints, is undoubtedly the star of the movie managing to brilliantly balance both the scripts dark humour and tragedy whilst still making Mildred seem like a real person. A few plot points are resolved a little too quickly and neatly, but overall Three Billboards makes for a good watch.

I liked it but the open ending was very anticlimatic. And I also disliked how "edgy" the characters tried to be all the time, but the screenplay was good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Three billboards was a pretty entertaining film from beginning to end. McDormand and Rockwell both had great performances, Rockwell moreso than McDormand in my opinion. The humor scattered throughout was well done, it kept the film from getting a little stale at certain points. There were a few things in the plot i had an issue with. I don't expect every film to have a complete, happy ending but it would have been nice if there was literally any progress in finding the murderer. I also understand McDormand's character would be eager to get rid of a rapist, even if it wasn't the one involved in her daughter's case, but I can't help but feel it goes against her entire story to just up and leave her only child alone to travel across the country to murder someone. It's not the first film where the police are seen as villains, but it's far from being a lighthearted film, with friendly heroes and execrable villains. The film strives to create and highlight the nuances of the plot and each of the characters.

I remember perfectly that this film was one of the heavyweights of the 2018 Oscars, and one of the great candidates for the Oscar for Best Picture. It didn't win the statuette, nor a good part of the nominations received, but it left the Dolby Theater with two awards in important categories: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Personally, I believe that the film would also have been a fair deserving of the award for Best Original Screenplay, since the differential of the film, for me, is to give us a script with an elegant and well done story, with drama and depth, and in that each character deserved a close look and an interesting development. The biggest problem with this incredible script turns out to be, in fact, the open ending and the feeling that it doesn't give the audience the conclusion they expect to see. It's not about wanting a happy ending... it's just about wanting an end point and not just ellipses.

In the wake of the story of the unsolved crime and the billboards, we observe the tense relationship and mutual misunderstandings between mother and daughter, and the way that mother feels remorse for the way she acted with her murdered daughter. We see how the police want to act, but they can't for lack of evidence, for being forced to follow the law and not being able to simply arrest everything and everyone or treat each one as a suspect. We see how honest and potentially good men can be lost if they do not have an opportunity to improve their conduct, and how there are indeed people who are committed to their work, despite the criticism they receive. And we see how, at times, the voice of the people can be more caustic and unfair than any other.

Martin McDonagh is a new director, who many didn't know well before this film. I had seen one of his films before, "Bruges", and he really improved a lot, not only as a director, but even as a screenwriter. Frances McDormand presents us a complete, intense, committed and powerful performance, which holds us from beginning to the end. Needless to say, it was probably her life's greatest work, and that it would be an injustice of titanic proportions not to reward it fairly, as it did. But she doesn't carry the film alone: Woody Harrelson is also very good here, in a difficult character that gives the film an added density. He also gave us, in this film, the best of himself. But even more powerful and intense is the work of Sam Rockwell, an actor I've never seen work at this level, and who was truly impressive in the way he grabbed the character and gave it body and density. The film also has satisfactory collaborations with Peter Dinklage (an actor who was not always treated well in the films he was in, despite being very good at what he does) and Caleb Jones.

Technically, the film is truly a quality parade. Let's start by looking at its elegant cinematography. With an exquisite work of filming and very well executed, the film has excellent colors, sharpness, framing and makes the best use of the beautiful filming locations where it was made. I especially enjoyed some shots at dusk, where the sunlight gives the scene a poignant nostalgia. The editing was equally well done, and the cuts are not even felt. The sets were very well done and are full of details, and I would highlight the police station or the store where Mildred works. Finally, we have to talk about the soundtrack, sad and introspective, signed by Carter Burwell, and the wise inclusion of the song "Last Rose of Summer" by the incredible voice of Renee Fleming, the icing on the cake in those opening scenes.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is faced with a very difficult task; the movie must present its heavy subject matter in a way that neither obscures the piece’s value nor makes too light of the content. The movie handles issues like discrimination, vigilante justice, and sexual assault with much care. This said, amidst cancer, arson, and rape, the movie has a heart and brevity, it isn’t all sticks and stones. As was mentioned previously, the cast of characters all feel authentic and bound within the town of Ebbing. They give well-oiled performances, but Frances McDormand especially portrays a tortured mother, someone so filled with grief and hatred that she comes off as ruthless and inhuman. Despite her initial outward appearance, McDormand’s character, like many of the others in the film, is deeply multi-faceted and is constantly struggling to balance the many of life’s challenges thrown her way. The shot composition, score and cinematography were all well done and fitting, but the writing and casting make this movie as good as it is. Expand

I felt the mothers strength and determinism came through well and indeed Frances McDormand gave a great performance in this film. Its not so much about the details of what happened to her daughter who was sadly killed, its more about local police departments, small American town life and the like. There are some plot twists and its a fairly thoughtful film too. Well worth a watch - I'd recommend this. Expand

One of 2017's finest movies.
The blend of comedy, tragedy in what is at times an absurd envrionment is done with aplomp.
Must see, even if it's just for McDormand's performance.

It mixes both commedy and tragedy excellently. McDormand's Oscar was absolutely deserved but the best performance of film was Sam Rockwell's one. And yeah, it was the best movie of 2017.

Martin McDonagh is a very talented director and writer, and he's able to deliver a powerful story of grief, anger, revenge and redemption, with a little bit of good humour in it.

The billboards spark public outrage and the tensions between Mildred, Willoughby, and fellow officer Jason Dixon (Rockwell) escalate as motivations become blurred and emotions boil over. The film is a powerful, emotionally heavy and darkly humorous exploration of grief, rage and the blurred lines of morality. The writing is exceptional, the performances are outstanding, and the cinematography is beautiful. Overall, Three Billboards is a must-see film that will have you questioning your own beliefs and emotions.
