Despite being a film where an entire civilization's homeworld was destroyed nobody takes anything seriously. It's nothing but bad jokes and plot elements being thrown in from left field. The 2 best Marvel films since 2008 in 1 year? It is true. Infinity War and Ragnarok. Ragnarok is funny as **** has great characters, those who maybe don't have so much background, so much emotional depth, or connection, but they're just GREAT to laugh at! And when the connection is there, yes, Thor & Loki's duo is fricking hilarious, they had the greatest moments in the film, even though this also had the worst villain ever EVER, just like Doctor Strange had, but while in that movie it was irritating, and the story was built around him, in Ragnarok, I just didn't care. The previous 2 were meh films, but the weirdest in all is that the trilogy's most non-mythological movie expands the most in its characters, Asgard, but, oh, wait, it also has the most creative bypass-sequence I've ever seen. Sakaar's folks, the Grandmaster, the Contest of Champions, all those little jokes, I love Waititi's style, the mix of the trash superhero movies, boring American comedies, and also some artistry, at least in the visuality, and its, sometimes unconventional techniques in storytelling. GOSH, need to watch it 1000000000000000000000 times again. Huh, lucky, cuz in Sakaar, time is not passing that fast. 7.75-8.25 level Expand

They set up the humour up to elven, add a lot of great new characters and use elements of the “Planet Hulk” storyline from the comics. To be fair if you liked the prequels this is a complete different style and feels a lot like “Guardians of the Galaxy” which is for you to decide if its a strength or weakness. For me it is a strength. The movie follows the events of “Thor The Dark Kingdom” and “Avengers Age of Ultron”. Thor is fighting to prevent the future he saw in a vision where Ragnarök started and Asgard was destroyed. However things escalated when he visits his father Odin in Asgard and the sins of the past turn up. I am a bit vague here to avoid spoiler. The story is really entertaining, has great humour and makes great use of old and new characters. It is no wonder that most people say this is the best Thor movie and also a frequent top 5 contender for the MCU. I would point out also the great humorous Stan Lee cameo. I should also clarify it has a lot of serious themes and great battles. The epic final climax is amazing and has mayor consequences. The cast is a true strength. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston return to their roles as Thor and Loki and work amazingly well together with their great chemistry. Idris Elba as Heimdall is better than ever and he is my favourite side character in the Thor movies. Another familiar actor also returns but I do not know if naming him counts as spoiler as he was in the trailer. For the new characters they succeed in making everyone memorable and awesome. There is Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skruge and director Taika Waititi as Korg. All are excellent. Also they have a good antagonist with Cate Blanchett as Hela. In total we got an awesome performance by a great cast. I and almost anyone else too praise director Taika Waititi for the movie. As always the special effects are awesome. This time I also praise the costumes, sets and colourfulness. The movie has a unique style. For the soundtrack everyone I know enjoyed Led Zepplins “Immigrant Song” as its is so fitting. The rest is also enjoyable and delivers an enhancing atmosphere. Overall this was a pleasant and positive surprise. Rarely is the third movie the best in a franchise. It was entertaining from start to finish and deserved a 10/10. Bonus knowledge: The “Planet Hulk” and “World War Hulk” story line is one of the best stories of the titular character. He gets exiled, becomes a slave, liberator and saviour but a tragic events make him return to Earth for revenge. You have not seen an angry Hulk before as he will be named Worldbreaker. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watch only the Marvel movies with Thor in them (Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron). Then watch Thor: Ragnarok. You'll witness a baffling change of character for Thor. Thor is a 1500-year-old classical deity. But after only 7 years on earth he's talking like he's from Gen Z. Supposedly, some events occurred between Age of Ultron and Ragnarok, but when you view how seriously Thor approached the prophesied destruction of Asgard in Age of Ultron and the way he approaches it in this film, it's nonsensical. He's been all about Asgard from day one, yet he views Ragnarok with a lot less gravity than he viewed the conflicts in the previous two movies. To cap it off, the one being he looks up to most (daddy Odin) dies, and Thor remarkably doesn't slink into depression. As a matter of fact, when you compare this with Avengers: Infinity War, Loki's death has a much greater impact on him. Let that sink in: the guy who isn't even blood, who betrayed Thor countless times and gave up their father to a nursing home in order to steal control of Asgard has a more impactful death than the supreme, all-powerful, wise being who forged Asgard into what it is today and raised Thor with the utmost love and adoration. Does that make sense? Especially when we see the way Thor reacted to his mother’s death.

Think about how hilariously bad these plot points are.

-LOKI PUTS ODIN IN A NURSING HOME ON EARTH.
(How did Odin, king of Asgard get suckered into that? No Asgardian would allow another’s orders to supersede those of Odin. If Loki turned into Odin to do so, wouldn’t Asgardians notice there were two Odins?)
-DOCTOR STRANGE KNOWS MORE ABOUT MAGIC THAN THOR.
(Strange is in his mid-40s and knows more about magic than Thor, a 1500-year-old being. Strange has only studied magic for a few years. Thor has known magic for his entire life.)
-THOR IS KEPT IN CHECK BY A TASER ATTACHED TO HIS SKIN.
(I thought lightning flowed through his veins. Yet he’s bested by a taser.)
-THOR DOESN’T CONJURE LIGHTNING TO BLAST OUT OF JAIL.
(Doesn’t the planet run on electricity?)
-CERTA CAN BEAT HELA BUT NOT THOR. THOR CAN BEAT CERTA BUT NOT HELA.
(Maybe this has to do with Hela destroying Mjölnir, but it’s never explained how or why she can destroy it. She just does. Plus, it’s shown in the final battle that Thor can handle himself fine without it. So, again, the power structure between the three characters lacks any attempt at logic.)
-MORE TIME IS SPENT ON MAKING JEFF GOLDBLUM FUNNY THAN MAKING HELA A MORE EFFECTIVE VILLAIN.
(Hela’s backstory is never described in detail save for one flashback with Valkyrie’s memories. Nothing about her relationship with Fenris. Nothing about how she rules the skeleton army or why it’s even locked away. She says numerous times that she’s “the goddess of death”. What exactly does that entail besides her stabbing people and summoning knives out of nowhere? Does she rule hell? Can she stop death? Revive people? Is it possible for her to die? No answers. Instead, we focus on the Grandmaster. Oh, wait. Sorry. I meant a Jeff Goldblum caricature with no depth. What’s worse is he’s not threatening whatsoever. It’s baffling how this guy came to rule a planet and instill fear at all.)
-MORE RESPECT WAS GIVEN TO TONY’S BREAKUP WITH PEPPER IN CIVIL WAR THAN THOR AND JANE’S IN RAGNAROK.
(Just because Jane and Thor’s romance is the weakest in the MCU doesn’t mean it should be disregarded. Ragnarok’s tone seemed to force a dismissive reference to their breakup.)

That’s just scratching the surface.

Then there’s the issue of casting.

-TAIKA WAITITI as KORG
(Marvel giving Taika a cameo as a beloved character rather than some new throwaway one shows that they’ve lost the plot, especially when you see the way the character is portrayed. It’s as if the producers didn’t ask him any questions about what he planned to do and just let him do it. Hang any tonal inconsistencies, amirite?)
-TESSA THOMPSON as VALKYRIE
(Nothing in Tessa Thompson’s performance gives the impression that she holds any semblance of strength. Compare her with Syf, Black Widow, Gamora, Nebula, or the Ancient One, who hold themselves with poise, and she just comes off as some b*tchy wannabe. She’s supposed to be a 1700-year-old being for goodness sake. Nevermind the fact that Tessa Thompson constantly looks like she smelled a fart. If they’re going for the color check-box, let’s stick with the demographic. Think about all the other light-skins that we could have had. Paula Patton, Zazie Beetz, Halle Berry, Christina Milian, Rochelle Aytes, Thandie Newton, Brooklyn Sudano, hell even Rihanna would have been a better performance, not to mention easier on the eyes.)
-JEFF GOLDBLUM as GRANDMASTER

In short, this will go down as one of the biggest inconsistencies in MCU history. It's trying to be Guardians, Vol. 3. Just because a sequel does something new, doesn't mean it's good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thor: Ragnarok is a franchise saver and redeemer after its two predecessors. Seconds in the movie already has a completely different feel from the two that came before it, and this difference is a huge breath of fresh air and makes the movie far more enjoyable than the two that came before it. Hemsworth is at the peak of his comedy, Loki has a great character arc, Hulk is a welcome face and Korg and the Grandmaster are scene-stealers. Hela is a far more powerful, intimidating and convincing villain than Malekith was, and she’s a formidable foe to our heroes. Ragnarok perfectly balances comedy with sadness and seriousness and goes a great job of not squandering it’s A-list lead and supporting cast as it gives every substantial character moments to shine. There are a few nice callbacks to previous MCU installments, but the thing about this movie that stands out is how entertaining it is considering that the stakes are decently high. Ragnarok is a movie that wants to have as much fun as possible considering its premise, and it succeeds in doing so in every regard. It delivers in every way that fans would want for a third installment, but it also fundamentally changes the Thor franchise and takes both it and the character in new directions that they badly needed. The mid-credits scene nicely and smoothly ties the movie back into the bigger universe and timeline with disrupting the flow of the movie. Thor: Ragnarok is a must-see for fans of the characters and viewers looking for some good entertainment and a lot of laughs. Expand

After seeing Thor and Thor: The Dark World, I had taken the assumption that Thor moviesAfter the release of Infinity War, I had begun bingewatching all the MCU movies. And I'm not gonna lie to you. I wasn't feeling like watching this movie. After seeing Thor and Thor: The Dark World, I had taken the assumption that Thor movies are always bleak and lifeless. They always try to be serious when they can't possibly do it when they have characters like Thor, Loki and Odin. And so when it was time for me to watch this movie I was very reluctant, because I knew I can't skip it. But I'm glad I sat through this movie, because it was a huge improvement.

The movie started out in Asgard, from the point where Thor: The Dark World left (and honestly the only thing I remember about that movie). The way that movie had ended, I had thought this movie would build more on Loki pretending to be Odin. But that ended immediately. Instead this movie focuses on Thor and Loki's estranged sister Hela, who had been abandoned by Odin at a young age. She easily manages to defeat both Thor and Loki and sends them to exile on Sakaar, with Thor reaching the planet two weeks after Loki. That was the part where the movie skyrockets the interest. I like everything about it movie from a cinematic point of view - the CGI, the acting, the comic timings, the story, the dialogues. Everything is absolutely perfect. I could undoubtedly say that this is one of, if not the best superhero movies which is not an origin story but rather a continuation of events. The comedy of the arc is the selling point. My favourite dialogue was the rock guy saying, "I planned to start a revolution but didn't publish enough pamphlets so hardly anyone turned up."

After Thor, Loki, Hulk and Valkyrie come back to Asgard to stop Hela we get the best CGI ever witnessed with Thor. I really like how his eyes glow whenever he has to shoot lightning. I always wanted him to be like that. Thor really had a very drastic character development. I know many people have said this - he lost his father, learnt about his sister, his friends were killed, his precious hair was cut by none other than Stan Lee himself, he continuously got taken down by Valkyrie and lost against Hulk, his entrie planet got blown up and his people encountered Thanos in space. And yet this was the funniest MCU movie yet. And not just Thor, every scene that had Loki in it was always interesting too.

However, this movie was obviously not without its set of flaws. For starters the elephant in the room, the amount of exposition that was given throughout the movie was too much, with most of it never being mentioned any time afterwards. There was even a scene where Thor is explained everything about Sakaar on a virtual trip, but it was never talked about afterwards nor was it necessary. If it wasn't for this unnecessary padding of runtime, I'd have given it 10/10. The Planet Hulk arc was also quite unexplored from the comics, and it would have been great if they made a spinoff movie on Hulk also since Hulk has never been given a solo movie starring Mark Ruffalo. Then the biggest plot hole, Valkyrie electrocuting Thor also didn't make sense since Thor is literally the God of Thunder and he shoots lightning from his hands. And then when Hela pins Thor he gets the ex-machina of his father telling him about his superpowers.

Thor: Ragnarok is an excellent MCU movie. It's kinda sad that this can't be enjoyed unless you've watched Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Because it could have really been cool to show to someone who has no idea what the MCU is all about. It does have the good reward to it, since you can watch Avengers: Infinity War after it. And the tone of this movie is so flexible that even the grim Infinity War completely suits in being its sequel.

'Thor: Ragnarok' continues the upward direction of the 'Thor' films.

I had a blast with this. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the story unfold, the score is terrific, the new and old cast members are great and there's a lot of amusement in there too. It's superb, it's my third favourite MCU film at this stage.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 2011 original but that's turned out to be the weakest of the three. I found 'Thor: The Dark World' to be a fairly major improvement on that, this 2017 is narrowly better than that aforementioned 2013 release. Bring on 'Thor: Love and Thunder'!

Chris Hemsworth is quality in the lead role, I found him super enjoyable in this second sequel. Big fan of his new hairstyle, by the way. This is also the most I liked Tom Hiddleston in an MCU film. Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett and, particularly, Tessa Thompson are fab additions. Shoutout to (director, as well!) Taika Waititi also, he made me laugh a fair few times as Korg.

Great film, oh and I love the nod to a certain 1971 Quaker Oats Company-induced film... nicely done.

One of it not the best entry into the MCU. With Guardians of the Galaxy easily the funniest.
Getting Taika Waititi to direct was genius, bringing a freshess to the MCU that was much needed.

That tracends into one of the worst superhero movies, while also one of the worsi comic-book movies ever. Is one of the worst things the genre has to offer. Is it worth seeing? No, I'll explain my opinion.

Have you ever heard the slang "jumping the shark"? Is a slang used to describe a plotlines, that somehow are too stupid to be believable. Thor Ragnarok turns every character into a cartoon over-the-top parody of it's former self. This movie jumps the shark at every chance, so much in fact. It feels more like a Saturday Night Live promotional-parody-sketch than an actual movie.

And while yes, there are great parody-sketches, I'm obviously complaining because the movie feels like the worst kind of parody-sketch. Which at worst consist of a 30 second joke prolonged for 5 minutes. However, this movie is like an unfunny 5 second joke prolonged for 2 hours. Is pure pain, none of the jokes land. It feels like all the worst internet 9-gag memes pasted together.

The comedy is completely blind, completely deaf to the events that are happening in the plotline. People may be dying and the movie is doing some of the worst jokes ever. Not even Care Blanchet can save this. Nothing has consequences, and everything is overlooked for the sake of the next joke. The worst joke is uttered by the CGI character played by director Taila Waiti, a rock made character that looks like Fantastic 4's member the Thing, but this version is stupid. He jokes when Thor's planet Asgard explodes. Jack Kirby, who drew Thor's comics was sad that people didn't took his life work seriously, he would had hated this movie. Is like Batman and Robin. The second Thor movie was so bad, I thought nothing could be worse and yet this movie is worse.

Trying to remember it to write a review, is painful. Chris Hemsworth is no longer playing Thor, he is just playing himself as class clown, he is definitely the worst actor of the Original Avengers, the other worst one is Mark Ruffallo's Bruce Banner, whom I'm not even sure what he is supposed to be doing. Is a mess. The movie doesn't know what to do with Loki, he is sorta just there like Hulk. Everything is just sorta there, whenever something dramatic is gonna happen is all ruined by another I'll placed joke.

And I don't hate humor in films, nor Tex Avery like humor in live-action. Rogger Rabbit, The Mask, Deadpool, Space Jam. Taika Waititi lands some jokes on Jojo Rabbit, but here he misses every single one, humor is so painfully bad that the prospect of hearing again, any of this jokes, truly terrify more than most horror films. This the worst Marvel MCU comedy at it's worst.

All those are great, and fun. This simply is the opposite.

Guardians of the Galaxy not only helped elevate the character relationships with humor, but the jokes were not the entire film. Guardians of the Galaxy impressively was not just the funniest mcu film, but also the most emotional. The one dimensional Thor: Ragnarok on the other hand dismisses everything for jokes and when you do that we lose total interest in the story. Even though this is suppose to be the most serious thing that Thor faces, it is treated like a joke. If your not serious then I'm not serious which takes away all interest. I could actually care about what happened in the first two Thor films and they still had jokes that never became jarring like this third installment. I even cared about what happened in The Lego Movie more than I cared about what happened in this film. I have never seen a movie stop me from caring about the plot because of the humor which is what makes Thor: Ragnarok so successful at being bad. The next part of my criticism is a spoiler, but I did not check the box because it does nothing for the rest of the film other than make me drenched in sadness. So basically, because action films despise romance, Thor breaks up with Jane Foster for no reason off screen and to me that is pretty much saying that none of the character development or threats that the characters faced in the first two films really mattered. I already rage quitted on Thor: Ragnarok from that horrendous exposition. It would have been even better if they said nothing or they could have just said she was busy or something much more acceptable. So the question is, why not give this film a zero. Well, Thor: Ragnarok is the only superhero film I have ever seen with a main female villain. That is literally it. Expand

Darkest Thor story turned into a comedy because Marvel Studios is a joke factory with fans who honestly believe humor is the epitome of cinema

A struggle to sit through and I nearly walked out several times.

Seeing the GOD OF THUNDER taken down by a shock collar was so stupid, and it was a joke the hack of a director kept doing again and again and again.

You can't even use the "Well his hammer got broken" defense for how stupid the shock collar gag was because it's revealed in the third act the power is within him, so he should be immune to it.

It'd be like Johnny Storm getting taken out by burning his hand on a hot skillet while cooking. It makes no sense and is just stupid.

Hulk is a joke. Thor is a joke. The movie is a joke.

Critics giving it anything higher than a zero just shows how biased and untrustworthy they are and how pathetically low the bar is set for Marvel Studios to meet the "Gold Standard" mark from critics.

A movie that tries SO hard to be funny that its hard for me to take seriously and enjoy it. Every 5 seconds there's someone trying to make a joke and trying to lift the mood. Take the first scene:
Thor's hanging from the ceiling, while Surtur gives his speech and its constantly interrupted by Thor who is spinning on the chains… Am I supposed to laugh at that? It has its moments, great action sequences, but most of the time I thought I was watching a low budget straight to video National Lampoon movie.

I'm not mad about the change of the source material, I'm glad they took liberties with it, but when they fill the movie with unfunny jokes every 5 minutes it and the overall lack of seriousness in the movie make it the worst of the trilogy.

But with this new, Guardians-like vision for the character, the sarcasm does get a bit overboard and most of what they show we've seen plenty of times before. But just to get that out of the way, Ragnorak is still a primetime addition to the MCU and many might consider it as the best of the Thor movies, but the way I see it, I kind of miss the old Thor. And to be honest, they didn't really push the envelope as far as I thought they would. Other than Thor's hair-cut and a few sarcastic jokes, with a "Fifth Element" like planet, the story and everything else just felt plane same to me. I commend their attempts and applaud their ambition, but in the end, it just didn't work or digest the way I thought it would. But it was worth the shot. Expand

Quite good. Only flaws are the "what are you the god of?" scene and some unfunny jokes.

Honestly wasn't sure what to expect from the trailer and so pleasantly suprised by what appears to be marvels first (second if you count deadpool) comedic / action hybrid. Waitiki's fingerprints are here adding comedic tones that breathe heart and warmth to the thor series thanks to the strength of hemsworth's comedic timing.

Thor and Thor:Ragnarok are easily 1 and 2 in the Thor movies. I don't know which is better. Probably Ragnarok. Maybe a bit too much humor , but very enjoyable. Story line could be a bit better but the villain and the co-star are top flight. IThor and Thor:Ragnarok are easily 1 and 2 in the Thor movies. I don't know which is better. Probably Ragnarok. They did short-change the Hulk some , but the movie is called Thor after all. Expand

The beginning of the movie was entertaining and funny, the middle had a lot of cool and fun characters, and the ending was funny too, but also filled with action. I recommend this movie. Expand
