Didn't really feel like a complete movie, just barely wrapped together Bateman's and Fey's characters by the end. All others don't have much of a back story.
Wait for it on Netflix if you want to see it.

The story would have played better as a well-developed 6-hour televised miniseries instead of a cramped 103-minute film. Expand

In fact the movie is such a mess that it's tempting to think that the makers confused narrative drama with dramatic structure, and therefore found it perfectly natural to let the structure be as loose as everything else in the movie. It's just a shame most of them go underused. When they do all come together each of their characters personal problems can lead to some emotional and humorous scenarios.

It's one of those "life is complicated" type of movies. One that takes a look at dysfunctional family as a way of showing audiences that there are other people out there who don't have their crap together. It certainly makes the characters relatable as it always does, but the familiar messages kind of get lost in the heavy-handedness of it all.

The problem is that there just aren't enough laughs present here. It doesn't ruin the film but some more humor among the admittedly effective melodrama could have taken the film a long way. It's more believable this way, but it does hurt the movie for those going in for more laughs.

However as a whole it is a very solid film. One with some characters whose plights can be resonated with. It certainly not perfect, but overall it can still prove to be worth a watch. The strong cast does help with that.

My total score for the movie is a 6.5/10.

Perfectly serviceable Lifetime Movie fare. Same DNA as "Steel Magnolias" and "Fried Green Tomatoes" which meant I was on the FF button alot. Definitely a chick-flick.

Largely an uninspired ensemble flick which, unfortunately, wastes an unusually gifted cast of comedians. This film is about family and about life--the moments revealing this come much too late.

The drama part of "This is Where I Leave You" doesn't work at all and quite frankly is really bad but enough comedy moments from some of the characters made it somewhat enjoyable to watch.

The oldest son, Paul, (Corey Stoll), worked with his father in the family owned sports equipment, and his wife Annie (Kathryn Hahn) have unsuccessfully been trying to have a child. Judd, (Jason Bateman), comes home from New York city after finding his wife Quinn (Abigail Spencer) in bed with his boss (Dax Shepard). The third son, the baby of the family, Philip, (Adam Driver), who obviously inherited his father’s endowment and sexual prowess, appears with Traci (Connie Britton) a beautiful, smart, much older woman, in the Porsche she bought for him. Their only sister, Wendy, (Tina Fey) with 2 children, is married to Barry, (Aaron Lazar) who does a lot of traveling and is leaving for Paris as the film opens.

Along the way we meet a childhood friend of the boys, Ben Schwartz, (Charles Grodner), who is now a Rabbi officiating over their dad’s funeral and the shiva rituals. Living across the way are Horry, (Timothy Olyphant), the first love of Wendy’s, who had brain damage in an accident involving both of them, and his mother, Linda, (Debra Monk). There is also Penny, (Rose Bryne), Judd’s high school sweetheart, who runs an ice skating rink.

Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay, based on his novel, and I hope many of the unnecessary potty mouth lines and sexual actions such as the emphasis on Hillary having her breasts enlarged or one of the characters called ‘Boner’, weren’t in the book. There is really only one spoiler in a movie like this as we get into all the personal baggage of each of the characters. The director, Shawn Levy, is lucky to have a cast that makes him, and Tropper, look good.

With this first rate cast some scenes are bound to be standouts such as the talks between Wendy and Judd on the roof but especially a scene where Traci talks to Judd about where her relationship is going with Philip. Jason Bateman has major scenes with most of the cast members and is, basically, the backbone of the movie but the ‘older’ women, Britton, Fonda and Monk bring the gravitas to the film making it less of a TV sitcom.

“This Is Where I Leave You” is R Rated for sexual and language content plus drug use. It is a movie in between the young adult films of summer and the Oscar contenders of autumn.

Some of the performances are wonderful and it did make me chuckle a bit but the overall effect is "meh."

'This...' is a commercial dramedy, and I guess it was not a big hit. The score is a little sappy and intrusive. Some reviews that complained it's about rich people. Well, most Hollywood films are about people who aren't struggling financially. If that's a disqualifier, I think you have to disqualify most Hollywood films. So, what's good about 'This...'? The cast is amazing. Fonda and Fey are the only A-listers, and they're good, but I was pleased to see the lesser known actors shine so well. The dialogue is not great but it's good enough to contribute to some fine performances. 'This' might boost the careers of a few of those non-A-listers. Expand

I kept waiting for this movie to get better and it never did. There was some clever writing that came through in a few conversations; however, I was never able to buy into the idea that this family was a real family. I made it through the entire movie, but a couple times I didn't think I would. "This Is Where I Leave You," left me wanting for more than it was able to give... authenticity. Expand

There are the usual squabbles/rivalries and jealousies present, with the various family members trying to prove themselves better than others. It is fairly entertaining but not especially memorable or great in general. I'd say this is an ok watch, with a decent cast and some amusing moments but nothing more. I wouldn't especially recommend it as such, no. Expand
