The film received lots of criticism from those who though it to be ‘male-bashing’ and that men were represented unfairly. I believe this to be true with Hal seemingly being the only decent male role in the film. But personally what I love about the film is that it IS male bashing; it makes its point in precisely this way. Depictions of women are almost always negative and seen as inferior to men in most films. So if you find this film offensive to men then, metaphorically, grow a pair and man up. Expand

The story of Thelma, a housewife to a lazy slob of whom she waits hand and foot going on a road trip with her best friend Louise, the waitress who is street smart and quick thinking, is beautifully told by Scott. The films humour is hilarious yet still manages to keep that feeling of desperation that develop over the two women. And last but not least that ending, one of the best I have seen in years. Truly a classic film and something everybody should experience. Expand

Criticized as anti-male upon its release in 1991, it is clear that the feminist message of the film was a bit much for some. However, the film is not as much feminist as it is a film that pulls back the curtain on the patriarchy in cartoonish fashion. With every male character essentially a caricature of a certain aspect of the patriarchy, Thelma & Louise is, on the surface, just a female buddy film. A road movie, it is essentially a dual female take on Bonnie & Clyde with Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) committing through crimes throughout the southwest United States and trying to outrun the cops. In the film, director Ridley Scott explores various elements of the way in patriarchal thought has corrupted society and highlights the attempts of men to control, possess, protect, abuse, rape, and harass women due to the belief that women are subordinate to men.

To showcase each element, Scott creates plot devices to fulfill each attack on women that men commit. The most apparent is control. With Thelma & Louise on the run, the men around them try to control them, but not as much as the police. As they are criminals, the police issue a manhunt for them to try and find them, with little worry as to whether or not they are dead or alive. Of course, they are criminals, thus they are interested in finding them. However, the greatest crime they commit is stepping out of the acceptable behavior for women. The cops immediately assume the worst of the women, running straight to their husbands and boyfriends to try and reign them in and bring them back to normalcy. It does not hurt either that all of the cops are white men. As white men are seen as the most privileged members of society, they are often the aggressors in crimes against women. Thelma & Louise highlights this element with all of the cops being white men who take these crimes as a personal affront and send an absurd amount of cops to try and capture these two women. As predicted by Louise, the men are unconcerned with the circumstances of her shooting Harlan (Timothy Carhart). Though he was raping Thelma and was acting aggressive towards the women, it is hardly a concern because Thelma was likely "asking for it", thus she could not be raped. The biggest concern is that a fellow white male was executed for simply trying to claim his prize. As such, it is up to all of the white men in the police force to bring these nasty women to task for their crime. However, it is in this section that the film shows how it is not anti-male. With Thelma and Louise having locked up one of their oppressors in a trunk of a cop car, a black male smoking marijuana finds the car and, instead of helping the cop, blows smoke into the car. This scene establishes that while Thelma & Louise may be about women fighting back against white men, it is equally a film about highlighting the oppression that all groups considered "lesser" must endure in modern day America.

The control of the cops transitions well into the protectiveness men feel for women. The lead detective on the case is Detective Hal Slocumb (Harvey Keitel). While all of the other men are gung ho about getting and killing these women, Hal preaches amnesty. He does not want these women harmed and is not afraid to express this opinion. At the end, when they are driving off into the Grand Canyon, he chases after that, hoping to save them from their own demise. An off-shoot of controlling women, men have an inherent nature to protect women. In 2017, this has led to "white knights" or prototypical "nice guys" who see themselves as a sort of savior of womenkind, prepared to show them generosity and kindness that they have not seen before. In the film, Hal very much fills this role. As a cop, he should be trying his best to capture these women, but instead opts to take on a protective role and tries to shield them from the dangers of the men he works with. Unfortunately, his tactic is hardly wholesome as he still wants to arrest them, so at his core, he still wishes to exert control on these wily women.

The reason these women are in this position, however, is because of the attempted rape of Thelma by Harlan. An essential part of any film about the patriarchy and its dangers, rape and rape culture must be discussed. Killed by Louise for his crime, Louise knows that rape culture dictates that Thelma asked for it, considering she has been dancing with Harlan. Thus, the controlling and protective cops are not an option for these two. While Harlan very literally wished to force himself upon Thelma, the symbolic implications of rape are far greater and shows how women are raped by men on a daily basis. Whether it be actual rape, visual rape, or the violent seizure of their independence and rights. Here, Scott opts for the very visceral scene of rape, but Harlan is hardly the only man to rape a woman in this film. By attempting to control them or limit them

Even those who don’t rally to pic’s fed-up feminist outcry will take to its comedy, momentum and dazzling visuals.

Arkansas housewife Thelma (Geena Davis) and waitress Louise (Susan Sarandon) set out for a weekend fishing trip away from the drudgery of their lives and the indifference of their men; they stop at a roadside honkytonk to blow off steam, and things turn ugly. A guy tries to rape Thelma; Louise can’t take it so she plugs the creep with a .38. Then they hit the highway, dazed and in trouble.

Sarandon is the big sister, more feminine, more focused, smoldering with a quiet determination. Davis is more loosely wrapped; she goes with the flow, follows her whims into trouble. The journey into recklessness is exhilarating, which gives the film its buoyant pull. In an indelible final image, it maintains the sense of reckless exhilaration to the end.

Despite some delectably funny scenes between the sexes, Ridley Scott’s pic isn’t about women vs men. It’s about freedom, like any good road picture. In that sense, and in many others, it’s a classic.

Thelma & Louise is an acceptable road movie from director Ridley Scott. Although it might start off a little slow, the action and thrills pick up by the end, ands the messages about friendship and feminism are well-received.

For years I'd heard about how outrageous and empowering this film is, but I'd never seen it in it's entirety. I've seen bits and pieces on cable and seen parodies of it, but I really never saw anything that made me want to watch it. The story is an interesting one about these two ladies who go on a weekend vacation. The ladies go drinking and partying, which gets them into some trouble and leads to them going on the run. This is one of those films that has those classic moments that really shine over the rest of the film. I found Thelma & Louise to be quite forgettable, but it's those particular scenes that will stay with me. The cast was in class all it's own and I think that's why the critics loved this film so much. Thelma & Louise may have been revolutionary for 1992, but in 2013, it's really not all that extreme, and in the years since, there have been so many copycats, that it's hard to differentiate it from all the similar stories that came after it. Geena Davis is just unbelievably good as Thelma. I love Geena Davis, I think she's extremely underrated, and it's her performance that makes this film work. How she doesn't win the Oscar for her portrayal of Thelma is beyond me. Susan Sarandon wasn't bad either, she's not really known for comedy and too me, she'll always be the one who prevented Bull Durham from being THE ultimate baseball film, but she was impressive. The cast member that was most interesting to me, was the young drifter, played by a good looking newcomer named Brad Pitt. In his first major film, Brad Pitt was so much different from the man we know today, it really showed the age of this film and just how much things can change in a relatively short period of time. It's hard to believe, but it was almost exactly five years after this films release that he starred in Se7en. As I said previously, this film is considered to be one of the best films of all time and it's gain that reputation because of it's performances and stand out scenes. Thelma & Louise have their moments on their little adventure, but in the end, it's familiar, predictable, and forgettable. Expand

I would've expected a reversal of roles for these actresses; however, by the film's end, you realize why they are the perfect fit as Thelma & Louise. It hits home--and we root for these gals.

This is a classic piece of cinema with some great moments and a stellar cast. There are some noticeable pacing issues and the characters seem a bit too calm in the high tensity situations they are given. Were constantly reminded by the plot that they are not career criminals and yet they perform multiple crimes. Its a fun watch if you embrace the unreality of it all. The casting and soundtrack are superb.

An essential of the 90s that put feminist power under the spotlight with outstanding performances, combining the well-known resource of the road movie, with an ending that, despite the years, is incapable of causing indifference.

Thelma And Louise

3 And A Half Out Of 5

Thelma And Louise is a character driven feature about an adventure gone wrong that eventually is undeniably right. The chemistry among the lead characters might be and is the heart of the feature but its the rest of the part that gives it an appropriate kick to punch it on the correct lane. It may be short on technical aspects like background score and art design, but has an amazing cinematography and perfect editing on its favor.

As mentioned, the camera work is beautiful with amazing visuals and places where it is shot, that makes it immensely pleasing to encounter and demands attention through it. The script by Callie Khouri is smart, adaptive, gripping and thought-provoking where it may not allow the audience to work for it as the most of the past is served beforehand, but still keeps them tangled and engaged in it. Ridley Scott; the director, delivers his expected magic on screen and he is on his A game in here, withholding the viewers frame-to-frame. The performance objective is scored majestically by the lead actors Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in their parallel role and is supported decently by Harvey Keitel and Brad Pitt. Thelma And Louise breeds an essential and irrevocable fatal decision that actually is way ahead of its time and equally accurate too.
