It brings up issues of honesty, plagiarism, moral responsibility and finally has nothing to say about them. It's all gift wrapping and no content. The actors are all fine (Zoe Saldana is irresistible), but they are working in a vacuum. The ending, like that of Arbitrage, is annoyingly inconclusive, but so is everything else. Expand

But giving this to us as a story within a story within a story makes for at least one story too many. Plus, there are elements in the film that simply defy credibility. The original author dashed off the novel in two weeks and the book made it into print without a rewrite? I don't think so. I also find it hard to believe that an author would spend what seems like two hours reading from his book to an audience without taking questions afterwards. Expand

I had to watch it to the end to see how bad it would be and it really was terrible. Not one of the portrayals rang true. Every major player looked like they were out for an easy payday. The post war locales in France were laughable. The storyline was totally unbelievable. All of the players have done some fine work in the past, but this really stinks. Expand

Tedious and melodramatic with an unnecessary multilayered storyline and ambiguous ending that thinks its more clever than it really is. -MN

The Words

One would assume that a tale that depicts multiple authors with parallel plotline that goes deep into a narration within a narration, would wind up with making some sense or point, one is wrong. The writers may have an idea to begin with but that is not what gets you on the other side of the road and in here there are way too many ups and downs with a congested traffic where there is no room of art or craft. The feature is poorly executed with not a single lose thread to offer to the audience for them to hold on to this overlong journey. Unfortunately, the performance is dull too, which comes as a bit of a shock considering the cast it contains like Bradley Cooper, Denis Quaid, Jeremy Irons, Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde. The Words is an expired slow pill with a character driven tone that has to offer a wafer thin script, which pretty much tells you why it never reaches its destination.

Olivia Wilde and Dennis Quaid were unnecessary. Their scenes were awful and kissing was disturbing to watch. He is 30 years older than her! Two writers and first time directors messed it up. These two morons never directed again. That says it all.
